daddy,
I lived in Germantown from 1981-1984 with break in Indonesia. Love the Rendezvous, but there were a lot of other BBQ places, and when Memphis in May comes around the world championship BBQ events take place on the bluffs overlooking the River. Its incredible. More than 50 big BBQ rigs, and you can buy a ticket to taste all of them if you want.
Our offices were in Ridgeway complex overlooking 240. Our neighbor was your Advanced Projects group working on dirgible, and olhigh speed Fax service. You guys have come a long way since then:) I bought my home in Germantown from one of one of the original plane drivers for Fred. One of those guys who used his credit card to buy fuel (you have heard those stories),
Ridgeway used to be a large golf country club but they moved further east and developed that area. Close to the airport on 240 west.
Posted by: Jack is Back! | February 14, 2019 at 02:30 PM
Its been 25+ years since I last ate at the Rendevous but I can still say they are one of the best restaurants in the country I have ever eaten at when it comes to quality of service. At the time I went there in the early 90s all the waiters were black men aged 40+ years old. They had been working at the restaurant for a long time as busboys, cooks etc and got promoted up to the wait staff. Waiters were not allowed to write anything down. They had to memorize everyone's order. If they couldn't memorize everyone's order they didn't get to be a waiter. I was a waiter in college so suffice it to say I was extremely impressed that my waiter got everyone at the table's order 100% correct.
Dreamland BBQ in Tuscaloosa still beats the Rendevous in terms of food quality. That place is a hole in the wall with a sign that says "No farting" over the entrance. Completely different atmosphere at that place.

Environmentalists and Marine Biologists hardest hit:
Seals seem to be adapting to shrinking sea ice off Alaska
Ice seals thought to be most affected by the disappearance of Arctic sea ice seem to be doing well, according to data presented at the recent Alaska Marine Science Symposium.
The two species of ice seals that were declared “threatened” under the Endangered Species Act are, so far, doing well with less sea ice.
“We’re seeing fat seals,” said Lori Quakenbush, a wildlife biologist with the Alaska Department of Fish and Game’s Arctic Marine Mammal Program. “They are reproducing earlier than they have in the past, which says they are getting enough nutrition at this point to grow quickly and become reproductive at an earlier age.”
Quakenbush studies marine mammals and monitors their condition. She says that so far, the evidence indicates that ice seals are getting plenty of food.
“We’re looking at stomachs and we’re seeing pretty similar diets to what they have done in the past. So we’re not seeing those big changes either. They’re still eating arctic cod; they’re still eating saffron cod,” said Quakenbush...
...“So two predictions that we made about what could be bad for walruses, just within a couple of years turned around and were sort of the opposite.”
...So, right, that makes you think all over again about what might be going on, and it wasn’t even in the list of possibilities last year.”

I'm as old fashioned as Jack for things like Uber until:
Last week Mrs. OL and I went to Nantucket for wedding stuff. Big storms all around and while we were sure we could get to Boston, we were not sure the small commuter planes would be flying to the Island and the fall back is always the ferry from Boston to Hyannis.
So sure enough we make it to Logan but the Cape Air flights are all down.
Says me "Honey, no problem, when this happens to me I go down to the bus lane and take the Brockton-Plymouth Bus to Hyannis but because it stops other places, we will probably miss the last boat but we can stay at the motel I use when that happens."
Says she "OK, dear, show me how you do that and outside we go to look for the bus."
But before we go out into the cold, I explain that you can only buy bus tickets online so let me try to do that on this silly phone you make me carry on trips. Yes, that is sometimes hard but I usually get it to work so hang on while I do that", says I.
So there I am trying to access the bus website on that tiny screen but I see she has her phone out to check her messages, I assume, so I go about my task, cursing my fat fingers.
Before I have the bus tickets, she tells me "Our ride is right there at the curb so come with me."
Uber got us 80 miles to the last boat with five minutes to spare and cost less than two bus tickets, the tip was included, and no cash changed hands.
It was MAGIC.
We came home the same way...

I'm not sure. Brian Kilmeade predicted this move on the radio this morning (I think he has some great sources). His thinking was that although a chunk of the base was going to holler, it's still a shrewd move. Trump gets Nancy "not one dollar for the wall" to cave and agree to some funding, and then says "thanks [redacted], now I'm getting the rest of the money elsewhere and there's not a damn thing you can do about it."

Posted by: henry | February 14, 2019 at 03:33 PM
Henry @ 3:25
Sundance and other pro-Trump pundits have already found the fine print so I would hope Trump's people have as well. The restrictions that Congress has put into the bill (such as only authorizing construction in the Rio Grande Valley region) pretty much prevent any construction on the border wall even with the $1.4 billion that was funded. Here is Sundance's take:
https://theconservativetreehouse.com/2019/02/14/summary-of-negotiated-budget-appropriations-w-limits-on-border-security-and-no-funding-for-border-agents-or-ice-agents-full-pdf/#more-160029
There is a graphic that shows where the Rio Grande Valley region is. Its the extreme right part of the border.

Of course the irony is that Congress did authorize the US to give Israel, Jordan and the Ukraine $5.3 billion for border security fencing.

If Trump declares a national emergency I suppose one benefit of that approach is any funding he uses for border wall construction would not be constrained by the ridiculous limitations that were put into the spending bill. The $1.4 billion funded by Congress would be subject to the limitations but nothing else.

Well this is fun.
Thunderstorm, heavy rain. Power goes out twice. Comes back on.
Then, transformer blows directly across street sitting on the pole where they just reattached the wires last week when it snowed and trees fell across it.
So there's still power in the lines and it sits there arcing and burning the crosspieces on top of the pole. We're getting low current so I start the generator and throw the switch.
Meanwhile the top of the pole is still burning and the transformer itself is obviously super hot and it begins burning at the top. It's so hot the top mount of the transformer going through the pole sets the pole on fire there too. The fire guys show up to control traffic but PG&E hasn't so they can't do anything so I go back in the house. I little later it sounds like someone is on the roof; the top five feet of the pole fell off and the transformer is now hanging in mid air about ten feet off the ground and the service lead to the house is laying on top of a trailer.
Lovely.

My only bad Uber experience was after the Army-Navy game this year in Philly. Frederick and I called one up after we got outside the gates. The guy gave me a 5 minute ETA but kept saying the cops were blocking his way. We watched him on our phone going all over the place, minutes away from us. Finally, he gave up without telling us and headed back to downtown Philly. A Yellow cab pulls up after us waiting a half hour and takes us back to Philly.
Mrs. JiB had a really bad experience from Orlando to our place in The Hammock. She just about aborted her Uber app. Some are good some are really bad and best to be careful. One guy here has his front seat fulll of crap and a baby seat in the back. He can only take me, no one else. Not impressed.

Posted by: henry | February 14, 2019 at 04:13 PM
These are all just tiny details obscuring the big picture (which I have described before to the irritation of many).
About half the country wants a wall and control of who gets to live here, and the other half wants the opposite. Not much will convince people to jump over the divide in one direction or the other, and skirmishes over this bill or the next won't matter much.
The status quo, even including new chunks of the wall added over time, favors the open borders side and will turn over the tables once the 2030 census counts the noses and of course the Left know that and so does the open borders GOPe.
There is no middle ground between the two different visions for our part of North America, so good luck predicting what will transpire during the lifetime of our children and our younger posters at JOM.
Posted by: Old Lurker | February 14, 2019 at 04:14 PM
A bit too much negativity here. Did those who are negative on the emergency declaration actually believe that shutdowns would bring the congress to their knees and get them to fund the wall?
The whole point was to get them to show their cards, which they did. They refuse to secure the border.
The Supreme Court isn't going to step in and take over the power to declare a national emergency.

He is the one who made the threats in December about getting his way by having a shutdown. Not me.

Team AOC already put a ten year "sell-by" on America's flatulent cows
Though my knowledge of ruminants is rudimentary, and flatulence is funnier than belching, I believe the majority of methane exits from the north end of cows, not the south.

I'm glad I'm not "Anti 4D." They sound like a group of idiots.

Tom R, how many points did GHWB gain when he said “read my lips”? How many did he lose when he raised taxes anyway? (Hint: he lost more than enough).

McCabe is going down and he knows it.
He will lie to get his way out of it.
Fully agree maryrose. That is why I think it's foolish that anyone here believes McCabe when he claims Rosenstein was willing to wear a wire to spy on Trump. Why would you believe someone you claim is a liar?

Whoa, DJT is not at all like Poppy Bush, who started undermining everything Reagan did on Day 1.

Shutdown accomplished the following:
Delayed the full out attack by House of the President.
Showed the American people that Democrats are socialists and want to take their money and redistribute it.
Got the Dems to pony up1.375 billion for border.
Dreamers got nothing
Showed everyone that President Trump will do all that he can to protect them
Showed that Dems play politics with the lives of American citizens and that they really will do anything in their hatred of him
That Dems care to vacationrather than do the job they were hired to do
The President can compromise but they can’t.

"Democratic president could declare gun violence a national emergency"
Probably best to take everyone's guns away before starting CW2,

If the Blonde Scarecrow starts howling like an alley cat in heat, I'll know DJT did the right thing.
She is braying on Twitter that Trump just destroyed America and called Trump the American Merkel. Screw her and anyone who agrees with her.

Bush said 'read my lips' and raised taxes instead.
Trump said 'build the wall'. If he does, it's not read my lips, it's just the opposite.
If he doesn't then he has a problem.

Trump is lying about his intent to sign the bill?
No, he's not lying, but he can't pass a bill that ain't on his desk, can he?

Every liar uses a bit of the truth to seal the deal.
The Intons were masters of this and triangulation.
McCabe tried to be too clever and his hatred left him holding the bag.
Yates and Page played it smarter.
Told the truth and as a consequence may get off scot free.
Do I think RR said maybe I should wear a wire?
Yes.
Even if he was joking , he probably entertained the option because he looks out for number one first. He is not as bad as McCabe but He doesn’t really have snyone’s back.
I agree totally with Rocco.
