The National Enquirer tried to blackmail Jeff Bezos by threatening to publish some dick-pics he sent to his new flame? And Bezos published their threatening emails?
Well, he has balls. And the National Enquirer has the pictures to prove it.

From that Washington Times piece on Roberts and the LA abortion case:
So as I and others here predicted, Roberts moves into the Kennedy squish seat by apparently changing his view in a 3-year time span. Though granted they have still not voted on the law itself. This is just pending full review.
But what possible grounds could there be in the Constitution for the federal government to override a state's regulation of medical practices? If I had a stronger stomach I'd go back and read that Texas case.

Narciso,
If you are referring yo the USS Fitzgerald. Yes, how indeed?
An under manned, poorly trained crew on a ship that isn't in port long enough to keep up with repairs.
Systemic collapse. It wasn't the fault of the crew and officers alone of the Fitzgerald as the subsequent incident with the McCain makes clear.
Senior officers in the 7th Fleet allowed this to happen.
Posted by: jim nj | February 08, 2019 at 01:09 AM
It argues that we should have a larger Navy so that individual ships aren't over-tasked and have enough down time for repairs.
OTOH, with a larger Navy how can we man it given what is reported above?

Poor leadership and lack of resources (money).
I blame Obama also, this didn't happen overnight. This was years in the making.
Altogether too many flag officers ignored this, didn't buck the system hard enough or were too worried about their careers.

AOC - the gift that just keeps giving.
I hope all the Dems embrace that idiocy.
The only thing I mildly agree with is energy efficiency, but you can't accomplish that on a 10 year basis by rebuilding or refitting every building in America.
Energy efficiency is a long-term thing. It's been going on for a very long time. It's called economics. Home owners and businesses acquire systems that are meant to last 15-30 years. When they die we calculate how much to spend on a new system. If the savings are great enough we spend the extra money on high-efficiency systems.
People just naturally understand that paying a little more now for years of lower cost savings is to their benefit. Whether they do it by gut feeling or a spreadsheet, if it makes economic sense they do it.
We talk to professionals in the field that we respect, ask them for options, keeping in mind that their reputation lives or dies with us, and get an education on what's new in the industry.
We make a generation long decision and upgrade. And that happens hundreds of times per day.
Add to that the hundreds of low-income projects that offer grants or no-cost loans to winterize homes and we ARE making progress.
The problem with energy-efficiency is that we keep adding more and more electronic devices to our lives.

Sky News over here keeps running a TV story on the biggest ever Meth seizure in US History. Apparently it was bound for Australia but via cooperation they alerted US cops and the bust was made. Australian investigation leads to biggest ever U.S. meth seizure
an estimated street value of $1.29 billion - the largest ever shipment bound for Australia and the largest ever domestic seizure in the U.S.
So far it's only in foreign papers, not US papers. It makes me wonder if US domestic media is ignoring the story because it buttresses Trump's call for a Wall to prevent drugs? Seizure of the drugs was in California.

There is growing demand for a genuinely accountable government which, even with limited resources, delivers programs and policies with meaningful, measurable impact. Rapid advances in technology support the use of data and science in the private sector to develop insights about what people need, innovate products and policies to meet those needs, and then measure their success. Government has the potential to be similarly impactful, prompting recent federal and state calls for government to use a data-driven approach to produce efficient and effective policy solutions. But how can state and local governments use data and science to deliver improved results to their constituents? This article highlights the key challenges to creating and supporting fact-based policy at the state and local level, and draws solutions and lessons learned from an innovative and scalable partnership model developed with the state of Rhode Island.

Shifting the focus of social research from publishing papers to developing institutions as ‘social theories’ could dramatically improve society, just as the natural sciences have improved our use of the material world. This requires a few practical steps.
First, leaders of institutions should become more self-aware and systematic in how they collect and use knowledge to improve their work and innovate to meet their aims. Local and central government should build social research into provision and policymaking at all levels, from local services to global governance. Auditors, regulators and inspection bodies should use social research to create better feedback loops to promote learning and development in the institutions they monitor.
Second, social researchers should work with institutions to help them develop, test and demonstrate the best way of achieving their aims and meeting people’s needs. Social research institutes should also treat their relationships with the media, policymakers and practitioners as part of their primary purpose and the social research process.
Finally, none of this is possible without giving people the right skills. Universities should equip people to become reflective practitioners and develop the skills and knowledge to embed social research into institutions and public policy. All education institutions should develop practical politics as a basic skill, so that everyone can learn how to take part in society as democratic citizens and influence decisions that concern them, because how society runs is ultimately accountable to them.
Politics is about applying knowledge of how the world works to solve social problems and make institutions work better for people. As I have argued elsewhere, we need to improve people’s practical political skills if we are to enable our global society to become more resilient and responsive in the turbulent century ahead. This is not a theoretical argument, but a profoundly practical one about the nature of knowledge, society, education and our survival as a species.
Gives Gramsci's March through the Institutions a whole new meaning, doesn't it?

The Daily Mail has had a slew of stories (of course 50% of what they print is fake) but an early article reported that the source of texts (and pics) obtained by the Enquirer were from girlfriends of hers, with whom she was sharing as proof of the relationship.
Given this chick had a kid with Tony Gonzales, later dated an LA Laker, got married to a big Agent, had two kids and then has an affair, sharing stuff GF's sounds typical.
Again, this woman is not known for discretion is she? That must be embarrassing to Bezos, and reckless, but maybe that's part of the attraction.
And then when I saw that Woody Allen sues Amazon for backing out of $73 million deal due to 'baseless' sexual assault allegation, that pretty much took the cake.

standfast24 • 6 hours ago
Bezos is brilliant, with AWS he created cloud computing, he perfected online retail and has created a juggernaut company in Amazon. All you need to know that the original name was relentless.com, but that sounded too...well you figure it out.
He has hired tens of thousands of brilliant people and the company moves at warp speed in what they do.
Plus a few hundred thousand more. Working at AWS, hard, rewarding and well paid, work in an Amazon warehouse, not so much. But they will have more robots soon to replace all those people.
Bezos bought the WaPo, because it's 10X more effective then spending a millions on lobbyists and it can make him money, Amazon has millions of Prime customers that can read the WaPO, that's all profit.
Bezos has kept a tight lid on expenses, benefits and wages as WaPo employees loudly complained about after the $5M+ Superbowl vanity commercial.
The WaPO is like a media Death Star stationed over DC, there to focus it's death ray on all things Republican and Conservative and above all, Trump. Is the WaPo fair? Ask Kavanaugh?
Bezos is probably the most Darwinian, Capitalist alive, but he knows that it's far more logical to join the Dem/left political establishment and credentialed class. All those liberal Dems, Democratic Socialists think he is one of us, he is part of the resistance. What Bezos gets with the WaPo and being left is no bad social media, no friction and a more "flexible" political class as Amazon battles with the other multinational giants.
Frankly, if Bezos wanted an upgrade, we were expecting a Stanford educated, biochemist, who speaks 8 languages and looks like a clone of Heidi Klum or Giselle Bundgen. Had he run off with Michelle Obama, well the media would have gone into orbit. Instead he picked Sanchez, a marginal LA info-babe.
We are all terribly disappointed, especially since the original Mrs. Bezos seems like a lovely and very smart lady.
