Not everyone is surprised by this slow trainwreck coming:
Police sources: New evidence suggests Jussie Smollett orchestrated attack
Unless I've missed an update we are still in the "Sources Say" phase, but it's hard to see how Smollett explains this away.
Now, a Frequently Unasked Question: Smollett had received a threatening letter a week earlier, which the FBI was investigating. Also a hoax? {Rick Moran has more at PJ Media.]
And when did the alleged attackers become white? Neither the initial NY Times nor Ebony accounts mention that, nor is it brought up in Smollett's initial statement. IIRC, in some statement Smollett said he didn't know their race since they were bundled up against the cold.
MORE: TMZ said the attackers were white in their initial coverage and recently claimed they had that confirmed twice.

Several people on Twitter have been going back to the summer of 2016 and finding all of the supposed hate crimes over the last 2 1/2 years (against blacks, gays and Muslims) which turned out to be hoaxes. Quite a few, which indicates this should have been given a little more scrutiny by the press.

The elephant in the room for media malfeasance discussions is that many reporters are simply not smart. They fall for hoaxes easily. Over and over and over again They are obviously not well read. That this is combined with a completely unwarranted arrogance compounds the problem.

In 2016, race was reported for 5,770 known hate crime offenders. Of these offenders:
46.3 percent were White.
26.1 percent were Black or African American.
7.7 percent were groups made up of individuals of various races (group of multiple races).
0.8 percent (46 offenders) were Asian.
0.8 percent (45 offenders) were American Indian or Alaska Native.
0.1 percent (7 offenders) were Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander.
18.1 percent were unknown.
I'm using Vincent James' stats from The Red Elephants on YouTube. He puts the offender rates per 100,000 as:
Whites(non Hispanic)-1.07
Blacks-3.55

The Matthew Shepard and James Byrd, Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act of 2009, 18 U.S.C. §249, required the FBI to collect data concerning hate crimes committed by or directed against juveniles. Beginning in 2013, law enforcement began reporting the number of offenders who are 18 years of age or older and the number of offenders under the age of 18 in addition to reporting the number of individual offenders. Of the 4,100 individuals for which offender age data were reported in 2016, 3,436 hate crime offenders were adults, and 664 hate crime offenders were juveniles.
The murder of James Byrd Jr. is probably the only real case of lynching anyone can name in the last 30 years.
Matthew Sheppard's murder was totally spun up into hate crime bullshit. He knew the perpetrators. People in Laramie who knew them knew all of this. It was a huge cover up. Matt was a drug user and a drug dealer and the other two guys probably slept with him at some point. To use the common phrase, it was a drug deal gone bad.

I'm not buying all the hand-wringing over Trump's "I don't need this." He's not always the clearest speaker, but the gist of his statement was that although he could eventually get the wall done some other way, he wanted it done faster. Isn't an "emergency" by definition something that needs to get addressed quickly?
This was the quote: "I want to do it faster. I could do the wall over a longer period of time. I didn't need to do this, but I'd rather do it much faster."
Of course all the MFM headlines just pull out "I didn't need to do this."

From the actual linked report--
This country is experiencing a time of deep division along racial lines. From solving climate change, to managing technology, the rapid shifts of people and economies and the desperate need for social unity and collaboration, the world is making new and more complicated demands of our children. We recognize that as a city, as a people, we can only meet our challenges and improve our lives if we find ways to do it together.
Posted by: rse | February 17, 2019 at 04:01 PM
Segregation by the color of our skin, the language we speak, our income, our physical ability or the way we learn robs all children of the chance to improve their ability to think critically, to work collaboratively, to engage globally and to benefit from the city as the classroom. Researcher Eugene Garcia has noted, “When a child comes to school for the first time he/she comes with a little suitcase full of experiences (language and culture) that he/she had before coming to school.” All students benefit when a teacher says, “Welcome, let’s open that little suitcase and see what you have so you can share and we can learn from you.”

Below, we share a glossary of terms as we have agreed to use them. We are intent on an inclusive and constructive public conversation that confronts bias in all its forms, from racism to unconscious stereotypes, to policies and decisions that shape assumptions and can serve to divide us by making the pie look small. We aspire to an “us” and whatever language we use, we believe the discussions are challenging and worth it.In the creation of these definitions, the group recognizes the importance of words to signal intentions and commitment, advance compassion and empathy, and promote long-lasting change. These definitions are bold, unapologetic and unambiguous. By sharing the definitions below, we acknowledge a long history of unequal educational opportunity. The themes below are prevalent in many aspects of our society. In this report we use them in the context of education.

Heard a thought provoking podcast based on an article titled something like Is This Abortion's John C Calhoun Moment?
Back in the 1840s and 1850s there were many moderates on the issue of slavery. Uncomfortable, disapproving but wondering how to get there from the current situation. Sen Calhoun advocated slavery as a positive good. This sharpened the debate.
The recent NY legislation and other activist actions may be an appropriate analogy.
Not sure this link will work. It's to the podcast I'll go look for the article too.

CRE explores the relationships between historical and contemporary conditions of inequality and ideas that shape access, participation, and outcomes for learners. "

jib-
it gets worse if you go to the Glossary in the actual report, which is what I was quoting from, it amounts to Oberlinizing every public school in NYC to make sure all students are woke, which is even a defined term in that Glossary.
Also quoting Paulo Freire by name along with Critical Race Theory. It's not news to me that the revolution is here, but it is still stunningly graphic as is the insistence that we must be an 'us'.
Conscientização--Paulo Freire’s conception of critical consciousness-- raising the consciousness of both the oppressor and the oppressed about the system of oppression that implicates both of them. It is seen as a form of liberatory pedagogy that, in turn, helps both the oppressor and the oppressed consider their situation critically and creatively and work towards systemic transformation (praxis), towards a more just social order.
The glossary starts on page 107, long after most people would have stopped reading.

I had no idea you could at present sell dog or cat meat in this country, or perhaps this is just a federal law to iron out any dissenting jurisdictions (I love states' rights, but no dogs, no cats, please).
We had a stinker of a hoax in Lincoln in 2015, a former UNL basketball player, Charlie Johnson, a lesbian, showed up at her neighbor's one morning naked and bleeding from cuts--she said two anti-gay guys had attacked her and tried to start a fire in her basement. All not true, though she had made a very modest fire ring in the basement herself and the cuts were also self-inflicted. Ultimately, she only served 7 days in jail, with hefty probation and community service obligations. She was indeed rather nuts, but I had this incident brought up in a department meeting as a reason why we all needed more sensitivity training, and never heard a peep after (of course) it was disproved. Annoying.
