Likewise, though not because of Catholic theology.
I'm still an economic libertarian because a free market is pretty effective at taming the worser demons of human nature.
But the fact is ALL ideologies are simplistic and inadequate models of human society and human nature and libertarianism is most definitely an ideology.
For the liberty that libertarians long for to exist there must also exist a society and societal norms [and some laws enforcing those norms] sufficient to channel human nature toward a middle ground that does not satisfy libertarians precisely because they're ideologues.
Libertarians, are in the end, liberals [classical ones as opposed to the left and it's social liberalism] but in both cases there is an unhealthy desire for a utopianism that not only can't be obtained, but because there is no practical limit to their ideologies, invariably leads to authoritarianism, though for different reasons.
Conservatism, which is a mere political philosophy rather than an ideology, can be stodgy and boring because it doesn't carry the implicit excitement of either an unlimited ideology or the promise of a revolution and black and white plan of reaching nirvana hear on earth. But it is the only means in an imperfect world full of sublimely imperfect people to contain human nature and turn it toward a self sustaining society and political framework that guarantees the maximum political liberty while preventing the utopians from taking us down the road that always ends in another Gulag.
That being said, any conservatism that does not tend always to default to the most practical libertarian solution of any problem leads invariably to big government, paternalistic Rockefeller Republican RINOs that invariably make common cause with the social liberals in their eternal quest for heaven on earth; a heaven in which those in need [the social liberals] take by force from those with the abilities [their neighbors] everything they can lay their hands on.
"Well, certainly CNN and Bill Maher did things that we consider to have crossed the line. We think the statements they made are defamatory. They're not humorous," Wood said, according to The Hill.
"So certainly Bill Maher is somebody that we're looking at very carefully, and HBO, for allowing him to make those defamatory statements," he explained.
What did Maher say?
Referring to the controversy and Sandmann, Maher said, "I don't blame the kid, the smirk-face kid. I blame lead poisoning and bad parenting. And, oh yeah, I blame the f**king kid, what a little prick."
"Smirk face, like that's not a d*ck move at any age to stick your face in this elderly man," Maher continued.
Then it got worse when Maher invoked a pedophilia "joke."
"You know, I don't spend a lot of time, I must tell you, around Catholic school children, but I do not get what Catholic priests see in these kids," Maher said.

Iggy, great comments at 10:17. Libertarianism takes civilization founded upon conservative values for granted. If libertarians had their way, that civilization would crumble quickly. Which would be a disaster in its own right but would also mean a complete loss of liberty.
Similarly, social liberalism inexorably leads to fiscal liberalism.

Libertarianism takes civilization founded upon conservative values for granted.
Yes, this. As John Adams recognized, “Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other.”
Libertarianism is silent on most of the great issues of the day--unhelpful and incomplete. Abortion? Depends on whether the not-yet-born have the same rights as the born. Immigration? Many libertarians are open border enthusiasts, naively putting freedom of movement over the rights of citizens to decide whom to admit. Foreign policy? Too many libertarians are reflexively isolationist, as if that is always in our self-interest.
It's a good starting point, but then you have to add religion and morality, not to mention common sense and pragmatism.
DEVELOPING: Venezuela crisis:
- Major protests across 24 states.
- 67 desertions
- 14 dead
- 285 injured
- 2-4 trucks burned
- Maduro ends diplomatic relation with Colombia
- Guaidó: "All the options are on the table"
- US Vice President Pence travels to Bogotá on Monday
"Furthermore, opposing Amazon was not even good politics, as the politicians have learned since Amazon pulled out. They are like the dog that caught the car. They are now desperately and incredibly trying to explain their actions. They cannot. They are trying to justify their flip-flopping on the issue with false accusations that it was a 'backroom deal.'
----------------
The polls showing seventy percent of New Yorkers supported Amazon provided false comfort that the political process would act responsibly and on behalf of all of their constituents, not just the vocal minority. We underestimated the effect of the opposition's distortions and overestimated the intelligence and integrity of local elected officials.
"Incredibly, I have heard city and state elected officials who were opponents of the project claim that Amazon was getting $3 billion in government subsidies that could have been better spent on housing or transportation. This is either a blatant untruth or fundamental ignorance of basic math by a group of elected officials

The only Collusion with the Russians was with Crooked Hillary Clinton and the Democratic National Committee...And, where’s the Server that the DNC refused to give to the FBI? Where are the new Texts between Agent Lisa Page and her Agent lover, Peter S? We want them now!
Thanks! I can't keep up with all of this. I feel like I need a chart on the wall or something, but then my daughter would probably think I had lost it. LOL!
So far sustained winds ~30mph, gusts at 52. Heavy wind forecast through the afternoon, with sustained at 40 and gusts above 60. Might run all night by the time it gets to you.
In his anti-Trump book, titled, “The Threat: How the F.B.I. Protects America in the Age of Terror and Trump,” McCabe related his initial thoughts when Comey first broached the idea of the press conference:
"Oh, my God, I thought. We don’t do that. That is not what we do. I remember looking at Comey and just kind of shaking my head, and saying, Ooofff, I don’t know, that seems like really putting us out there. That’s really abandoning tradition and practice, and could set a bad precedent. I don’t know that there’s a specific policy about that, but that’s not who we are most of the time."
McCabe criticizes himself for not speaking out against Comey’s press conference suggestion and blasts Comey’s actions as eroding public trust in the FBI:
"I look back now and see how far the FBI was stretching, how completely we were leveraging our own credibility. Had I imagined how polarized and vicious the reaction to Comey’s statement would be, had I foreseen how his statement would erode the credibility of the FBI, and specifically that of the FBI director, in a way that could do long-term damage to the institution — I want to believe I would have assessed our chances for success very differently. Made different arguments. Listened differently."
"Had I thought this whole thing through more skeptically, had I been more resistant to Comey’s idea that he could make this statement in a way that connected with people both inside and outside the organization, had I made a more realistic appraisal of how many of those people would not have accepted anything short of seeing Hillary Clinton in handcuffs being dragged off to the Metropolitan Detention Center, then perhaps I would have said to Comey, Don’t do it. Let’s be the normal Bob Mueller, say-nothing FBI of old."
Golly. Not the press conference during which Comey read the exoneration speech - months in the making, and with which McCabe was intimately involved! That's not who they are.
He also claims to have thought Hillary should have been indicted, and he's not just saying that because of the stench of his wife's McAuliffe bribe. That's not who he is!
Because they had buried that laptop in the bowels of the bureau headquarters for three weeks, tosca and Coleman were the officials who were still pursuing the Hillary matter, prince who I related his connections was the middleman in expressing the frustration of the rank and file re the top floor.
Now, to me, using pictures of Gadhaffi in power and right before he was brutally killed is not very statesmanlike, plus one would think he wouldn't want to be associated with that entire Libya mess, especially since Libya had given up their WMD's and Hillary double-crossed him.
Rubio is acting like he is running Venezuela foreign policy, if you look at his time line.
OT, but I had to change one of those tiny halogen light bulbs in my bathroom today. Does anyone really believe that you can't touch the bulb with your fingers? I accidentally did, then out of a fit of paranoia, used a Qtip and rubbing alcohol and washed the bulb down. Then of course, I was afraid to flip the switch because I was afraid the alcohol would catch on fire, so I couldn't tell if the bulb was defective or the fixture. I know, I am beginning to sound like that old coot that was on 60 Minutes, Andy Rooney.

Following up on Iggy's Libertarian comments, I made this chart many years ago, because I thought that too often the terminology got in the way. (Like the WIP comment yesterday that math stopped being useful when the alphabet showed up.)
I need to add Libertarian on the rising part of the curve just above Anarchy.
Adding (excuse my language here ) "YOU FUCKING IDIOTS at the end of every sentence, and still get the message. Or maybe REALLY get the message. It would not surprise me in the least to learn he edited that out.
I was reading it aloud to my husband---I'd NEVER read anything like it in my life form a politician---and the above phrase just came to me.
I think we need to start a Go Fund Me site to publish that letter from the NY State BudgetDirector on the front page of both the NYT and Wa Po, so their clueless, math idiot readers, who NEED to read it, might see it.
A couple of thoughts on this sex massage parlor bust and all the hype around the Kraft bust. How is this news? These parlors are everywhere. I pass about a hundred of them on my daily commute from the suburbs of Long Island to into western Queens county every day. There's a strip along the Queens Nassau County border on Northern Boulevard in both Nassau and Queens where there are several on every block for about at least a mile. Why the sudden concern?
Jimmy "The real story is schoolkids being brainwashed by idiot "teachers" who themselves were probably brainwashed."
Down in Appalachia there was a saying about the third generation of welfare being the tipping point because that meant the kids growing up had no experience with any living parent or grandparent having had a job which supported the family.
I think your, and Clarice's, comments about teachers is exactly the same thing. We are at least into three generations of teachers who know little and were taught nuthin themselves.
Btw, my uncle used to own a massage parlor, I think in East Boston or possibly Revere Beach. Strictly massage, they claimed, although my uncle knew nothing about massage and didn't actually work there.

He is NOT a fan of socialism, or open borders, or a whole list of D politicians who he names (as F'ing IDIOTS)(not exactly his words. I've decided I'm going to call them as I see them from now on, cousins's spouses included.)
I wish I was talented enough to post it for you. It's great! That too needs to be in WaPO and NYT! Though CLT is definitely going commie.
The Smollett Family Business: Acting and Activism
“My mom was in the movement with Bobby Seale and Huey Newton, and one of her first mentors was Julian Bond,” Mr. Smollett said of the Black Panther founders and the civil rights leader. “To this day, Angela Davis is one of her dearest friends. We’ve spent Mother’s Day with Angela.”
Although I rarely pass up the chance to join a pile on deserving subjects, I know at least a couple teachers who went into the field for the right reason, i.e. they get a sense of accomplishment when the light goes on in their students heads. One of them had a daughter who was a chemistry major who made money on the side by tutoring students who struggled with the subject. She became so good at it that it eventually became her full time job as she set up a business of hiring and dispatching tutors, which she sold when she married a military lifer and had to move around.

I think we will see more of this type of behavior in the future.
I am thrilled to learn from Jimmyk and Janet about the clandestine conservative groups of young people who are gathering in New York and Virginia.
Our hope for the future.

Momto2, Chris Pratt is reportedly a crypto-conservative as well. I'm sure that got mentioned on the last thread, but I haven't caught up yet...

Pratt has a couple places on our rock. The 2nd one is a small sheep ranch in the middle somewhere he just bought recently. Our housekeeper pal just saw him twice a few days ago with his new GF. Everyone pretty much leaves him alone to live his off time like a normal person. I’m not sure I would even recognize him unless someone made a fuss.

Dem in Dem criticism in NY
https://www.governor.ny.gov/news/open-letter-new-york-state-budget-director-robert-mujica-regarding-amazon
----------------
"Furthermore, opposing Amazon was not even good politics, as the politicians have learned since Amazon pulled out.

Look at the pictures Rubio posted on this tweet.

Blessings to your family, James D. It's funny, when I wrote my mom's eulogy I also put in there that she saw Frank Sinatra live at the Paramount, since that was one of her proudest moments.
It is T- minus one week for the next New York JOM meetup. From there, we can walk to the Ukrainian museum on 7th Street, and from there to the William Barnacle Pub at 80 St. Mark's place.

He legally immigrated here as a 15 year old, waited five years to become a citizen, and has first hand experience living under socialism.

He is NOT a fan of socialism, or open borders, or a whole list of D politicians who he names (as F'ing IDIOTS)(not exactly his words. I've decided I'm going to call them as I see them from now on, cousins's spouses included.)
