Russian Navy has new weapon that makes targets hallucinate, vomit: report
Wow! Who knew they could weaponize the Super Bowl game film so quickly?!?
BONUS: Ross Douthat on his arc of fandom for the Red Sox and Patriots.
First, the Lost Years of shared sorrow and self-pity, aka the Lovable Losers era:
How I Learned to Love the Patriots (Again)
The underdoggery and romance of my childhood are out. Dynastic rule and the creation of a great new American institution are in.
I became a besotted baseball fan at the age of 6, watching the Boston Red Sox, my mother’s ancestral team, march to the World Series against the New York Mets. My parents woke me up near midnight on Oct. 25, 1986, to come downstairs with them and “watch the Red Sox win” — an eventuality that was, at that moment, just a single out away. It remained one out away through three singles, a devastating wild pitch and an incident that shall not be described involving one William Joseph Buckner. I wept, slept and awoke a gloomy pessimist, forever haunted by the fall of man.
...
This combination of Red Sox tragedy and Patriot futility defined my relationship to professional sports until adulthood, at which point (as you may have heard) absolutely everything changed for both teams and they became insufferably dominant. And my fandom, forged in suffering and melodrama and “wait ’till next year” rue, never quite recovered from my favorite teams’ success.
Yeah, yeah - everybody loves a loser until they experience winning. And the Boston fans! Back in the day an ardent Red Sox follower offered his take: In the Stadium, when the Yankees are down by three in the ninth the fans cheer and roar as if they can will the victory to which they are entitled. In Fenway if the Red Sox were leading by three in the ninth but the other team got a man on first, the place would go silent, as if thirty-three thousand turkeys had just been told about Thanksgiving.
Ahh, that's changed. Ross describes his bumpy transition into the glory years:
I remember that person, but I can’t remember how he felt. And trying to raise my children to be New England sports fans in an age of constant New England winning has given me real sympathy with the lukewarmly religious, the Christmas-and-Easter sort of believer who wants to impart some measure of piety to their children without really experiencing the flame of faith themselves.
...
But the frequent triumphs of the Sox and Pats have been crucial to my loss of ardor. In the old days I was always mystified about how Yankee fans stirred up the same excitement year after year despite their constant winning, and as my teams became increasingly Yankee-like the mystification remained. Indeed, I missed the thirst enough to seek the feeling elsewhere — adopting long-suffering franchises temporarily (until the Kansas City Royals ruined our affair by winning the World Series) to remind myself of what it was like to nourish long-unrequited hopes.
Today? He's nearing a breakthrough:
And now that the Patriots have ground their way, in a terrible-to-watch game highlighted by punts, to yet another Super Bowl victory, I want to report a change in my sports psychology. In my dutiful connection to the latest run of Patriot Super Bowl appearances, I have begun to feel something different, strange and unfamiliar — not a recovery of the old romance, but a growing appreciation of pure, ruthless effectiveness, an admiration for iron efficiency, a joy at the dismantling of highly touted rivals, a feeling that almost … almost … makes me begin to have a trace of a scintilla of understanding for what it feels like to be a Yankees fan.
A slippery slope! He eventually quotes General Patton. Does Douthat risk brain damage by listening to sports talk radio? If so, he knows that way back when Mike Francesca would greet pronouncements by the Yankee owner with an intro about a new message from General George M. Steinbrenner, with the theme from "Patton" in the background.
Oh, boy. Seven more weeks until baseball?
MORE: I can't find a General Steinbrenner clip but Mike and the Mad Dog talk to Red Sox fan Mike Barnicle after the 2003 finale. Starts at about 32:40.
Next they will reformulate their salad dressing. The horror!!!

Ig, I will grant you that for some of them. Think of them as cannon fodder. The instigators have no fear of mortality because for them when it is over, it's over, but in the meantime more power for me is better.

Boston sports fans were starved for a championship, having to endure a drought all the way back to October 28th.
Brady audibles "Reagan" on national TV during Super Bowl, gives the double 👌🏻 sign at the rally, and Boston OKs the city's first Chik-Fil-A location while the rally is taking place. Moonbats hardest hit.

The Library of Congress announced today that it has received a $540,000 grant from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation to evaluate the physical health of the national collection of books in American research libraries and to guide their archive retention and preservation decisions. Since there currently is no objective formula to assess the condition of millions of books in the custody of the nation’s libraries, this scientific study will help inform best practices and provide a baseline for libraries to analyze their print collections based on established scientific guidelines.

OL,
That desire for power is itself a form of denial of their own mortality - a thousand year Reich, anyone? A final and permanent dictatorship of the proletariat?
I'm fairly certain the insatiable thirst for power indicates an even greater fear of mortality than the star-struck, true-believer cannon-fodder.

Manny,
George Gilder is a Jekyl and Hyde kinda guy.
He is a great writer when he chooses to be.
His wealth and Poverty was excellent.
But there are times when he gets so caught up in his subject that he starts making up words and using syntax and jargon that can make him close to incomprehensible. He was particularly bad back in the late 90s and early 2000s during his "microcosm" [and stock promoting] days.
Sometimes he forgets clarity is a virtue.
When he doesn't he's very good.

Listening to Rush doing his best, bless his heart, to explain "Marginal Tax Rates" to his audience was painful.
When our side is arguing deep in the weeds, we have lost the war.
There are only a few very simple questions for society to answer, after which it is just arithmetic:
1. How much of our nation's productivity should we devote to running our government (exclude transfer payments)?
2. How much of our nation's productivity should be transferred from one group to another?
3. How much of total 1+2 should be shouldered by each ten percent of all taxpayers?
The rest is just all blather.

Those questions are still deep in the weeds for most taxpayers. This "raising taxes on the rich" is based on nothing more than ENVY.
oHere is what I would say:
"You want to raise taxes on the rich? Realize this: you will never see a dime of that money. Not one red cent. ANy increase in revenue will be given to hiring more government employees, tax breaks for cronies and donors, and aid to foreign countries.
You will still be poor and the wealthy will be funding other wealthy people or they will move their money to a foreign country."

Clarice linked this article in the previous thread:
https://www.foxnews.com/politics/mueller-deputy-briefed-on-anti-trump-dossier-research-months-before-2016-election-testimony
DOJ official Bruce Ohr was asked about such briefings during a closed-door interview with House lawmakers in August 2018. In the interview, details of which have only recently emerged, Fox News has learned that Ohr revealed he met with Weissmann and other DOJ officials shortly after a July 30, 2016 breakfast meeting with former British spy and dossier author Christopher Steele, in the run-up to the presidential election
I assume the closed-door interview with House lawmakers was before the House Intel Committee. If that is correct that means Nunes assumption/guess that the redacted portion of the Rosenstein SC appointment letter gave Mueller the authority to investigate anything related to the Steele dossier likely wasn't an assumption/guess on Nunes part.
In less than a week we have Nunes dropping his hint about the redactions and now someone leaking to Fox News that Weissmann has known about the criminal activity surrounding the Steele dossier since July 2016.
Either Mueller/Weissman are covering up the Democrats involvement in the Steele dossier or they are actively investigating them. If you are like me and believe Trump is fully aware of what the redacted parts of the Rosenstein SC appointment letter are, then that points the needle in the direction of Mueller/Weissmann actively investigating them. All of Trump's "witch hunt" tweets are intended to distract everyone from the fact Mueller/Weissman are actively investigating the Steele dossier.
While I know a lot of people here will outright reject that possibility, the alternative means Trump is either unaware of what the redactions are or he knows what they are and is powerless to stop the coverup of Democrat involvement. On top of that he never fired Rosenstein who enabled the coverup to occur in the first place. I just don't see Trump being that weak and tolerating people intentionally trying to screw him.

he knows what they are and is powerless to stop the coverup of Democrat involvement.
That’s exactly what I believe. The DoJ is blatantly corrupt too to bottom, and the congressional GOP is mostly craven and venal (and that’s giving them more credit than they probably deserve). So, yes, he is pretty much powerless with regard to the crimes of Democrats and the DoJ.

MM "Those questions are still deep in the weeds for most taxpayers."
I hear you, MM.
But frankly, no nation whose voters cannot handle those three simple questions has any right to the prosperity we enjoy.
How much government do you want.
How much are you willing to have that government give to your neighbors?
How much are you willing to pay compared to your neighbors on both sides of the track.
Can't answer those? Then we cannot be the nation created by our Founders.
Accept that and move on to whatever is to follow and stop pretending.

This is serious, but not like protecting Normandy troops by pretending to prepare to invade Calais.

The Jerusalem Post follows up on their story from last week about an Israeli company that claims to be closing in on a cure for cancer.
Whether they are or aren't, much of the criticism sounds like the dismissive stuff that entrenched interests and experts always throw at the new kid on the block.
A good deal of skepticism is warranted but outright dismissal by the same guys who have spent hundreds of billions of dollars and 50 years fighting a war that they have won very few battles in and for most cancers are still using many of the same, brute force, barely effective weapons they started the war with, perhaps they're the ones to be dismissed.
Many of them are exactly the same guys who spent decades dismissing researchers who insisted cancer was not about killing or removing tumors, the great mass of which are simply harmless cells which refuse to die and the real culprit were those very few defective stem cells which once Stage IV is reached are impossible to eliminate.
That dismissal wasted decades running down blind alleys and rabbit trails because of "consensus", territorialism and close mindedness.

Do SOTU watchers really expect to learn anything watching Pelosi’s face?
I mean, really.

Comrade Bernie trying to dodge questions by pretending to be on the phone. https://twitter.com/henryrodgersdc/status/1092867167928897536
Although it's entirely possible he's just too clueless to be able to work his phone.

I expect to laugh a lot.

If Trump knew, and used that excessive subterfuge, I would be deeply disappointed.
There are a lot of posters here who believe the country is at a tipping point and that if Trump is not successful then things are going to get a lot lot worse. I'm perfectly fine with Trump relying on the art of deception to drain the Swamp and defeat the Deep State if that is what it takes. Besides, imagine how entertaining it will be watching all the Trump haters having massive conniption fits if it turns out to be true that Mueller is investigating everyone involved with the Steele dossier.

Iggy, Gabe Merkin (?) was a radio call in doctor popular in DC in the late 70s or so. He had one of those almost photographic recall abilities and was a voracious reader of the journals, and had a real practice during the days.
Years, maybe decades, before the "Academy Docs" caught on, Gabe would tell callers with ulcers to get checked for helico bacter (?) bugs in their guts and if found, take the right pill for ten days and poof, no ulcer. They almost laughed that poor doc out of town.
Until they discovered he was 100% correct.

I mean this in the most Christian of ways, but I suggest clarice's 4:40 link be saved so that if they succeed in defeating Trump we have a nice convenient list of people to find and line up against a wall to Ceausescu when the time comes.

Maybe spot the injection sites?

A number of researchers are working on new ways to beat cancer, including extracting stem cells and using them; removing immune cells from the patient and injected them, using nano particles to kill the cancer cells.Getting treatment away from surgeons and putting the issue in the hands of biologists was the first step.

Mueller and Weissmann are not investigating the Steele dossier.
Weissmann has known about it since early August of 2016 and knew it was a phony baloney Clinton pile of garbage. He carried on for 2 and a half years pretending it was a proof of collusion.
These are not good guys.
They are weasels trying to bring down a presidency.

Ig, a list of those who should be employed by no campaign that wants our contributions.

Clarice "Getting treatment away from surgeons and putting the issue in the hands of biologists was the first step."
YL2's fiance is a hematology-oncologist and YL2 is an eye surgeon. (amazes me just to write that...)
In the banter with the caterer the other day, I heard YL2 pretend indignantly correct the caterer with "I am the surgeon. He is not."
