As an alternative to denouncing the anti-Semitism in front of them The Democratic Clown Car Convoy denounces all sorts of hateful hate. This dilution of a denunciation of anti-Semitism drew bi-partisan criticism:
The resolution states that “whether from the political right, center or left, bigotry, discrimination, oppression, racism and imputations of dual loyalty threaten American democracy and have no place in American political discourse.” It also evokes white supremacist attacks in Charlottesville, Va., Charleston, S.C., and Pittsburgh as well as numerous attacks on Muslims and mosques.
Republicans mocked its all-inclusive approach. “We left out the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, we left out Wiccans, we left out Jehovah’s Witnesses, we left out disabled people!” Representative Doug Collins, the top Republican on the House Judiciary Committee, exclaimed shortly before the measure came to a vote, adding, “What makes you feel good doesn’t always heal you.”
Some veteran Jewish Democrats, who had pushed for a measure that would solely condemn anti-Semitism, were equally dismayed.
“We are having this debate because of the language of one of our colleagues, language that suggests Jews like me who serve in the United States in Congress and whose father earned a purple heart fighting the Nazis in the Battle of the Bulge, that we are not loyal Americans,” Representative Ted Deutch, Democrat of Florida, said Thursday morning in an emotional speech on the House floor.
“Why are we unable to singularly condemn anti-Semitism?” Mr. Deutch asked. “Why can’t we call it anti-Semitism and show we’ve learned the lessons of history?”
Representative Lee Zeldin of New York, one of two Jewish Republicans in the House, voted no, calling the final resolution “spineless and disgusting,” adding, “If a Republican member was pushing the anti-Semitism that Representative Omar keeps peddling, this resolution would name names.”
But Ms. Pelosi told reporters that the resolution was not aimed at Ms. Omar.
“It’s not about her; it’s about these forms of hatred,” Ms. Pelosi said.
Well then.
In order to stay on-brand Paul Krugman joined in with a bold "You're side is more poopy-headed than my side" tweet:
There are three things in life that are certain: death, taxes (unless you're Donald Trump), and persistence of anti-Semitism. But only one brand of antisemitism scares me – and it's not on the left
He's The Man Without Fear! Also, he's the man who doesn't read the NY Times, which had this way back in February:
Anti-Semitic Attacks Fuel Continuing Rise in Hate Crimes in New York
Hmm, NYC is MAGA country? Maybe! But if so the police and community leaders seem to be looking in some unlikely places.
One video showed a 51-year-old Jewish man being beaten to the ground by three young men, who seemed to select him at random. Another showed an Orthodox Jewish man being chased across the street by a man wielding a tree branch. A third showed an Orthodox Jewish man hanging on to a fence as an assailant jumped and choked him.
The three incidents, all of which took place in Crown Heights, Brooklyn, in the past year, have raised alarms in the neighborhood and in the city’s large Orthodox Jewish community as a whole. Hate crimes are up citywide, but in Crown Heights, they have taken a particularly violent turn.
The Times uses their time-honored dodge of letting pictures and video part the curtain on the underlying racial tensions. Folks familiar with the Crown Heights riots, Jesse Jackson, Louis Farrakhan or the young Al Sharpton really don't need a decoding ring, although it is possible some youngsters do.
Back to the Times:
But in Crown Heights, the increase in hate crimes has been more shocking because it has been marked by violent, seemingly unprovoked attacks on men and women in Jewish garb, many of which have been caught on surveillance video, and then widely viewed online. In many cases, there is no robbery, only the random attack.
Since October, there have been 15 violent, anti-Semitic incidents directed against ultra-Orthodox Jews in the neighborhood, according to an Israeli organization that tracks anti-Semitic incidents. Devorah Halberstam, the community liaison to the 71st Precinct, which covers Crown Heights, said she believes there have been even more than that.
Being visibly Jewish is part of the situation, which may be why the Professor Without Fear feels safe on the mean streets of New York. Hey, those Orthodox Jews aren't even pro-life, so whatever, amirite Paulie?
The police have made arrests in many of these attacks, much to the relief of residents. Still, they wonder what is provoking this wave of violence.
Rabbi Eli Cohen, the executive director of the Crown Heights Jewish Community Council, has begun visiting nearby public schools with Geoffrey Davis, an African-American community leader, to try to understand what may be driving the attacks, as many of the assailants arrested by the police have been young men of color.
Wait, what? "[M]any of the assailants arrested by the police have been young men of color." Bold talk from the Times. Not quite bold enough to give us a racial mix of black, Hispanic, Asian and white but bold.
The Times also took a look last November:
Is It Safe to Be Jewish in New York?
Well, just don't look Jewish, I guess. Avoid synagogues. Delis are probably still safe since many are not Jewish.
And yet, at the same time, New York has become an increasingly unsettling place to be Jewish. The first inkling of this emerged several days after the 2016 presidential election when swastikas and the phrase “Go Trump” showed up on playground equipment in Adam Yauch Park in Brooklyn Heights.

A woman from New York was driving through a remote part of Arizona when her car broke down. An American Indian on horseback came along and offered her a ride to a nearby town.
She climbed up behind him on the horse and they rode off. The ride was uneventful, except that every few minutes the Indian would let out a Ye-e-e-e-h-a-a-a-a!' so loud that it echoed from the surrounding hills and canyon walls.
When they arrived in town, he let her off at the local service station, yelled one final 'Ye-e-e-e-h-a-a-a-a!' and rode off.
"What did you do to get that Indian so excited?" asked the service-station attendant. "Nothing," the woman answered "I merely sat behind him on the horse, put my arms around his waist, and held onto the saddle horn so I wouldn't fall off."
"Lady," the attendant said, "Indians don't use saddles."

I fell behind on threads due to work.
Trying to catch up and then see the news about daddy.
I'm floored...
Who do I live vicariously thru going forward? I always looked forward to his post from Paris, China, wherever. He was posting from Australia, maybe last week, and I felt I was on the beach with him!
He was a great writer AND a great storyteller. He seemed to know a lot about a whole lotta things.
I've read your tributes and I know you all share my own sense of loss.
It's nothing when compared to the loss his wife and children fell and I honestly grieve for them as I'd grieve for the family of a best friend.
I had a couple of opportunities last year to meet him in Indy at Shapiro's but couldn't make it due to a software conversion project at the pharmacies where I work at.
I told myself, 'I'll catch up with those guys next time.'
I think I've learned a life lesson.
There might not be a next time.
When's the next meet up at Shapiro's?

I wonder how many of these dumb clucks whining about Christians supporting Trump know David was an adulterer and a murderer and that Moses was a murderer and Jacob a scheming chump. That Abraham pretended his wife was his sister and offered her to a king because he was a chicken. That Lot offered his daughters to a bunch of homo beasts in Sodom. That Samson was a first rate disobedient dope who slaughtered thousands.
Trump is a piker by Biblical standards and yet those guys are heroes of the Christian faith.

So now we're at the US Customs House.

interior + exterior photos
I visited the American Indian Museum in NYC as a child. It's now housed in The Custom House so Daddy and I payed a visit. It's free, but the security at the front door is a little overboard. Take off you coat, remove any metal, yes, belt too. Walk through a magnetometer as your other stuff is scanned and hope that your pants don't droop while waiting for your belt back.
https://americanindian.si.edu/visit/newyork/
homesite
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Gustav_Heye
The original collector and the founder of the midtown museum of my youth that is now located at the Customs House. There is a National museum in Washington, D. C., also, but I've never seen that one. The definition of American Indian comprises both continents and the Caribbean. So we were able to see artifacts from Daddy's home state which prompted a conversation about how many male politicians there were married to native Americans.
Like any museum they have those little placards that show what you're looking at, the tribe, location and circa date. Lots of varied objects. Many showing incredible craftsmanship. Many tribes represented. One exhibition hall was closed for renovation so we spent maybe an hour in there looking around at the exhibit and the buildings architecture.
Funny moment. Daddy calls me over to look at a stone carving of maybe a half-scale head from Central America, Daddy says, "Doesn't that look like Kim Jung Su (of North Korea)?" I had to laugh, because it did.
Let me add a shout-out to Kevlar Kid here, miss you brother.
So we leave, did I mention that the entrance is up a flight of exterior stairs, down the stairs we earlier went up.
Right in front of us is Bowling Green. Not much to look at, though in the summer it has a working fountain and lots of flowers. The takeaway is that a group of people would buy an open space to play 10 pin lawn bowling. Acquired by the city, it's the oldest park in NYC.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bowling_Green_(New_York_City)
Just north of that is the "Charging Bull", thankfully that stupid arms akimbo girl has been removed. The symbolism was always a farce. It's a VERY popular bronze, iconic in many ways of America and hard-charging financiers always looking for an opportunity. People surround the thing to get a good look at it and people patiently line up to have their pictures taken with the bull. Some do selfies, others hand off their optics to somebody else do it for them.
So we're walking up Broadway and I tell Daddy to keep an eye on the sidewalk.
https://streeteasy.com/blog/nyc-sidewalk-plaques-and-markers-put-the-citys-history-underfoot/
Because we're going to see plaques commemorating every Broadway canyon parade.
https://www.downtownny.com/new-york-citys-ticker-tape-parades
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_ticker-tape_parades_in_New_York_City
Some of them make you go, Huh? Others spark conversations or memories. So we're watching the plaques as we continue north and I look to the east side of Broadway and there is a building going through a renovation. I explained to Daddy that a lot of these old, tall buildings that housed financial companies are no longer Class "A" space. They are obsolete in terms of commercial use. The floor to ceiling heights won't accommodate a raised floor to run electrical, network and phone lines under. The ceiling is too low to handle the environmental duct work. I reminded him of the Battery Park City residential towers that I pointed out. He said yeah, I remember. Me, those proved the feasibility of living downtown so a lot of these old buildings are being re-purposed as residential buildings.
If Old Lurker wants to weigh in here that would be nice as he can probably explain this recent phenomenon better than I. But as I understand the process these buildings have really good bones, but there is no way to upgrade them for commercial use. You can't change the floor height, but a too low ceiling for a business is a tall ceiling in a residential use. Over a long period of time the old financial district is going to be mostly residential.
We got to Trinity Church which is right across from Wall Street. Daddy had already seen that so we stopped to discuss what's our next destination. He asked where Wall Street was and I pointed across to the other side of Broadway. He's like I don't see it. I'm like well it's obscured by the scaffolding surrounding two buildings being renovated. At this end, at this time, the entrance to Wall Street is essential a tunnel under the scaffolding.
So we're still deciding and Daddy is deferring to me and I'm deferring to him. I mean Daddy is a nice guy and we're getting along super, but I tell him this is your tour, I've already seen what I can show you going the Wall St. route. Federal Hall, the NYSE exchange, the Federal Reserve Bank of NY (worth going on their gold vault tour, but you need to plan ahead), etc. Or we can go to the World Trade Center, your choice Daddy.
More coming up on the World Trade Center.

I thought I had heard everything.
MrsJ and I heard the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields tonight, a good chamber orchestra. Featured was Jeremy Denk, pianist. He did a great job on a Mozart Piano Concerto, and so played an encore.
He said he was playing something silly, by someone we probably hadn't heard of: Richard Wagner.
So he started in on Tannhaeuser. I know the piano version well, and what he was playing wan't it. What was up?
After stating the theme, ragtime broke out. Tannhaeuser ragtime. Technically difficult, joyous, Wagner ragtime.
Really!

"Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell made clear he and his colleagues are in no hurry to adjust interest rates as growth slows and inflation stays muted, but said the U.S. central bank would announce new details of plans for its balance sheet “reasonably soon.”
I feel much better on FED policy as it's currently being implemented.
The idea that they might continue to raise interest rates and draw down their portfolio at the same time has never been done before.
So, apparently they are willing to stop rate increases for now and re-envision the pace of the draw down in their portfolio.
One of my concerns is that while the overall economy is doing well there will be some failures of companies this year. I want the people harmed by those failures to be able to find positions elsewhere.
I don't want the FED to tighten monetary policy thinking that inflation and business growth are going to get out of hand.
Inflation is still low and I expect some companies, particularly retailers, to fail.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joseph_Schumpeter
I'd like to leave a little room for Joseph Schumpeter's "creative destruction." I have a sense we're going to see some major write-downs from recent mergers that aren't going well and some outright bankruptcies this year.
A strong economy can handle these things better than a soft economy.

I hate these fucking people. So the kid survives. What's the follow up?
" The Oregon family ultimately decided against a follow-up DTaP (diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis) vaccination "and any other recommended immunizations" for the boy after his recovery from tetanus, according to the report."
I hate these fucking people. I can understand a libertarian view that people shouldn't be forced to do something they don't want to do, but they are creating modern-day lepers and potential Typhoid Marys. They need tattoos on their foreheads identifying them as risks to the rest of society.

People have gotten complacent. They don't know anyone who has had measles or other diseases and think they no longer exist.
And that their children don't need protection from an extinct disease. They are not extinct diseases. And if we keep letting people come over our southern border it's going to get worse.
At Ellis Island if you arrived with certain diseases you were sent back on the same ship you arrived on for free. Boarding agents had an incentive not to bring them here in the first place.

Rain followed by snow forecast to arrive towards noon so I'll have time to do a grocery run and get gas in the car. Yes there's gas in the car. I'm all out of canned peppers and Rotel. The other day I made the Lemon Ricotta cake from the recipe Clarice shared here a few weeks ago. This time I added poppy seeds and pecans to the cake and a Keto lemon frosting on top. The recipe is still a winner. You can double the amount of lemon zest for an extra lemony flavor. I'm amazed that after a decent helping the cake barely affected my blood sugar levels.

PIN,
Exactly. Animal husbandry, if you really care about your animals, you protect them with vaccines. It's a no-brainer. It's standard practice.
Most of us here are old enough that we caught many of these diseases in our youth and they were no fun to experience.
I have vivid memories of one childhood illness where my temperature spikes and my mother and her sister, my aunt, spent hours giving me isopropyl alcohol sponge baths to try to break my fever. I was so delusional I saw little devils dancing on the foot board of my bed. Scary time.
Obviously I recovered, but it scared the shit out of my mother. Me too. As I got older she was surprised that I remembered it at all, since I was so young, but I did and we talked about it.
The thermometer maxed out so fast that they knew I had a fever much higher than the thermometer showed. They thought it was in the 105-6 range. They had gotten my pediatrician on the phone and he made a home visit (remember those days) with a better thermometer and confirmed their guess.
His advice, keep doing the alcohol rub and if the fever doesn't break bring him to the hospital, call me, and I'll meet you there. The fever broke that night.
Very scary for a really young child.

Hoyden,
The travelogue is my therapy. I need to talk about this and I want to give people something to hang on to on Daddy's last day here. He was here with me and I hope that others will feel the same. That they were here with him too.
"Knock-on Effect", yeah, I discovered that term some tine ago. It' not an intentional thing. Though if you do one thing it may have an effect on another thing. In this case, Trump walking away from Kim Jun Su has the Chinese wondering if Trump will do the same thing to them.
While some wonder if Trump failed on North Korea he also sent a message to China.
Trump could have declined to meet with Kim. But he did, which implied a deal. When that, if even real, didn't satisfy Trump, he walked. That puts more pressure on China. If they think they have cleverly finessed a deal by out-negotiating us, they may be in for a surprise. China can step up and get real in the financial negotiations or can meet a walkaway and increased tariffs.
I don't see Trump looking for interim agreements.
Oh, and I'm working on the WTC visit with daddy.
Maybe you or somebody else can re-post my earlier Daddy story so the day crowd sees it.
I know you're waiting up for TWIP, I'll probably bail soon.

jim nj, it was a short wait. Went out for 3rd coffee and last of the lemon ricotta cake, and there it was, bigger than life.

jim nj, daddy chose well being your companion in his last day. I appreciate your sharing therapy. Your sharing expands the healing to all who care and I believe daddy approves.

daddy left with a flourish capping off his life time with JOM friends touring NYC.
Posted by: hoyden | March 09, 2019 at 06:13 AM
I need a daddy thread. A nothing but daddy thread.
Posted by: Strawman Cometh
How about we all gather here at 2 eastern time Sunday afternoon, while daddy's family is formally memorializing him in Anchorage? We can do the same.
Posted by: anonamom | March 09, 2019 at 06:32 AM
hoyden, what do you use for sweetener?
I've never done what I think of as #FakeBaking, but the lemon ricotta cake could be the exception to my rule.
Thanks

I fell asleep in my chair re-posting for the day crowd...
So now we're at the US Customs House.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alexander_Hamilton_U.S._Custom_House
An absolutely beautiful building. Outside and in.

More coming up on the World Trade Center.

anonamom, I used sucralose, not because I know better, but because I have a ginormous bag I bought at Walmart. I also have on hand stevia, erythritol, and xylitol.

jim nj, regarding trade talks with China,
I like that PDJT is not likely to be bamboozled as a negotiator. His exposing the rot that permeates the GOPe is a bonus. He expose the "why" behind voting for smaller government and never getting it.

Thanks hoyden. When you noted doubling the lemon zest--one of my favorite "personalizations"--I figured I could trust you on the sweetener too. That's a big reason I do NOT "keto bake"--I can almost always taste whatever it is about the non-sugar sweeteners, as "off" or chemically. And maybe in a citrus thing whatever it is that I taste may not be so dominant.
I'd rather have one (or two or three) bites of he real deal than a whole piece of something where I am going "There it is! I am tasting it it here."
*********
So, everybody--
2PM Eastern time Sunday, here? To celebrate the wonderfulness of daddy, in communion with his family and friends in Anchorage at the same time?
Any NAYS or reason not to?
Jimmy k, I know you may be in a plane---if you have to miss, what an appropriate place to be! You might see him on cloud...

anonamom,my heart will be with JOM @ 2 tomorrow. We are having lunch with hubby's brother tomorrow. He and his wife are in Florida. We have to have one of those serious family talks about my mother-in-law. She is ready for independent living and hubby wants all his siblings to support her decision. She is financially independent and mentally sharp and this is her decision.

As a Floridian ... having Ron DeSantis for Governor is awesome. This man is MFGA and is a rockstar. He's doing everything he promised - fast.
It's like having two Trump's ... one for President and one for my Governor.
Thank you @RonDeSantisFL

Yes, I second (or third or fourth) everyone's praise for the travelogues, jim nj. They are full of just the right amount of detail in true daddy style.
I love the idea of being here at 2 pm during daddy's Anchorage funeral. Thanks for that creative idea, anonamon.
Should we use an ear thermometer on every international arrival? Send them back home if they're running a fever for free?
When I went to China with my daughter's tour choir several years ago - they did exactly that. After we landed, a team boarded all decked out in hazmat suits. They had some sort of non-contact thermometer and went up and down the aisle checking each passenger. If they registered out of range, a separate person in a hazmat suit would manually check with an ear or mouth thermometer. We were all told to take an aspirin or Tylenol an hour before landing just in case. If even one person were found to have a fever, the entire group would be quarantined and they would have missed some of their performances. We were all deemed healthy enough to enter their country. Quite an experience start to finish!

This is an impressive list of accomplishments. Since I don't live in Florida, I didn't know about a lot of these things.

But Republicans remain wary of the move by Trump, which they fear will deplete critical projects in their states by shuffling money from other areas.
"Critical projects in their state"; what a fucking joke. There is nothing more critical than securing the border, Nickelfuckers. I need the GOP to die because these "this taxpayer money belongs to me" sponges don't represent any dedication to reducing the size of the federal leviathan and never will. They've been given clear orders by the electorate yet refuse to abide by them. To hell with them.

This is a really good video making the claim that AOC is an actress chosen by a casting call and controlled by certain people in the Justice Democrats and her advisors.

I had the same experience on several flights to China over about a 2 year period.
Didn't ever experience that going to South America, and of course that is where I caught swine flu.
Spent a night in San Paulo hallucinating and watching something dance on the hotel room ceiling, much like JimNJ described.

Ralph L.,
Ha! Point taken.
However, I do hope you will read the article in National Review about Ron DeSantis. It's by Deroy Murdock and showcases DeSantis's impressive list of accomplishments.

AOC is an actress chosen by a casting call and controlled by certain people in the Justice Democrats and her advisors.
So she's like the political version of The Monkees?
Amusing as that is, I hope not, because the Monkees are still popular and making money 50 years after they started (and even with two of them dead), and I can't stand the idea of AOC plaguing us for half a century.

That L. Lin Wood interview preview with Mark Levin will compel me to watch the whole thing. I would not want to be the defendant's attorney going up against this guy in a libel suit.
I will second catturd's comment on DeSantis. He is getting it done, every day, one issue at a time. As a resident, and voter in Florida, I really appreciate all he is doing. Too bad other states don't have the same governing fortitude.

James D.,
Do listen to that video. The people behind AOC are anti-Americans, anti-colonialists, pro-socialism.
Very frightening people.

Buckeye - During that trip, we were amazed at the number of people walking the streets wearing surgical masks. In a shop we saw a mannequin all decked out in a silk dress they were selling and also sporting a surgical mask! I think every student must have taken a photo of that as it summed up the paranoia of germs we were seeing everywhere.

jim nj the travelogue is fabulous! Thank you so much both for arranging this for daddy and for sharing with us now.
I have copied the installments but for some reason only the links in the text are working, the Posted by links are not. I will have to go back and fix them.
This is just to let everyone know they are available in a document. This is just a start and if anyone wants it now let me know and we can arrange a share.
I especially want the post links to work because the comments around them are very interesting too and worthy of reading and rereading. Thank you all.
