Was the Sidwell stuff done by the school's SJW Youth or the few students who are sick of them and Sidwell? The latter will be kicked out and turned down from 'good' colleges if they're found out, so I salute their bravery and stupidity.

It's odd that St. Albans seems to have lost its status as the premier politico progeny prep school in metro DC. Perhaps they still have a dress code and compulsory chapel.

Good afternoon! A perfect weather day in Florida, cool and clear blue sky. We brought the dog to the groomer and then went a local farmers market and had lunch down at the beach. The local Democrat table was manned by three old dudes, only one had a ponytail. What a cliche. Ha.

I love the idea of donating to the Anchorage library in daddy's memory.

Swastikas in the “Meeting for Worship” room carved on the benches? Might as well put the on pews at the National Cathedral.

The HuffPo author badly described a Friends Meeting for Worship (or Sidwell has no Friends on staff these days). We have two meetings every First Day, a Meeting for Worship and a Meeting for Business. All in the same room at the Meeting House. (Benches is correct usage for what others might call pews).

Actually, MissM, I didn't mean that. I meant the part where narrator Destin (sp?) talks about the single biggest issue facing the US in terms of our safety and national security.
Also his suggestion of a way to start handling it.

Off topic, my brother says that Destin has a number of vids and that he is an engaging, stimulating and upbeat fellow.

Do y'all think Barbara would mind if we aimed for a restricted gift?

D

Lurkersusie is wonderful with her posts.

MissMarple2

Porchlight,

That is a question someone should ask.

I do not want the gift to embarrass her and I don't want to cause any more pain for her.

If conservative books would cause embarrassment, I think books on ancient history, archaeology, Charles Darwin, etc. would be good. He had a wide-ranging number of interests.

D

Joe Lieberman says Omar should be named in a separate resolution.
I respect him.
I repeat my constant refrain, unless Omar receives a direct punishing consequence from this, she will do it again and probably from her position on the Foreign relations committee.
She should be shunned.

A mostly good article on Texas (in form of a book review) by Kevin Williamson:

https://www.claremont.org/crb/article/austin-city-limits/

I've seen this book here at the library and Williamson is right, it's a real POS.

Williamson gets Buc-ee's wrong, though. He makes it sound like just another gas station that happens to have famously clean restrooms. Otherwise he looks down on it as just another service station. But Buc-ee's is much more than that. Pretty sure Williamson has never even been in one or he wouldn't have written what he did (or maybe he would, I don't know).

The story: Once upon a time, a guy was traveling alone on the highway with his very young daughter and realized there was no place for him to take her to the restroom that was safe for both of them AND clean.

So he started a gas station/truck stop chain with individual-use spotless restrooms, and the rest is history.

Buc-ee's is a destination truck stop now. It has anything you could possibly wish to purchase on the road. People plan their driving routes around Buc-ee's locations. It does everything it is supposed to do and does it flawlessly. It is a Big Deal - and now it has an Alabama location, the first one outside Texas. It is lots of fun for people of all ages. A very Texan, even almost Trumpian phenomenon.

So, in the midst of a piece excoriating others for their snobbery, Williamson still manages to be a snob. But otherwise it's a pretty good piece - he really skewers the authors.

See Buc-ee's for yourself. https://www.buc-ees.com/index.php

jimmyk

Do y'all think Barbara would mind if we aimed for a restricted gift?

Good question, Porch, I think it would be good to find the answer before doing anything more than a general donation. Her feelings count most. I'll see what I can find out.

Porchlight

Thanks, MM. Could you ask Melinda about it? It might be simpler to ask Barbara first what her preference would be.

Catsmeat

Sorry about Alex Trebek (I was on Jeopardy over a decade again--and lost, though not ignominiously--but didn't know enough about Kevlar to get the Final Jeopardy). He did indeed seem a decent soul.

Porchlight

Thanks, jimmyk! I posted too soon.

Porchlight

Gosh, I don't have my glasses today and I now realize that there's another paragraph in Williamson's article above that explains why Buc-ee's isn't just any other gas station. My apologies to Williamson. It is worth a read, despite my other reservations about his work.

Pentagon may tap military pay, pensions for border wall

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Pentagon is planning to tap $1 billion in leftover funds from military pay and pension accounts to help President Donald Trump pay for his long-sought border wall, a top Senate Democrat said Thursday.

Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., told The Associated Press, “It’s coming out of military pay and pensions. $1 billion. That’s the plan.”

=========================

This entire article is based on Durbin spouting off like he knows what President Trump is going to do. It has already been picked up by Military Times, who I have already contacted and told them they should be ashamed for reprinting it.

THIS is an example of the information warfare going on. AP is party to it, as sbw has often pointed out.

This is designed to cause demoralization in the troops, outrage among Trump supporters, and a distraction to the Administration.

Ralph, Sidwell's star rose with the influx of Dem trash with Clinton and the star struck media types that following that caravan...and was/is as loosey-goosey as you would expect from that gene pool. STA was and still is the place for sons of the older established families of both parties. Also, Sidwell is coed and STA only has girls in the National Cathedral School on the other side of the grounds. STA & NCS would claim they are "harder" academically, and harder to get in.

When I heard david gregory mc an ed event here in atlanta when he started it with "yes, I really am this tall" he also mentioned his kids were at sidwell.

Old Lurker

Ralph, another thing about those schools. At Sidwell you start out at PreK and get to stay to 12th grade.

The Cathedral schools have a seperate school for PreK-3 at which time you have to apply to get into STA or NCS, and by then STA & NCS can spot the duds and turn them away. STA and NCS double the class size again at Gr 7 and to get in then, you do have to be a rocket scientist.

Sidwell families don't want that stress and the roll of the dice.

Clarice and I know this stuff inside out.

Catsmeat

Thanks, GUS! I did my best, but I really did NOT want to win, because the whole thing was terrifying, despite the colossal niceness of the production crew and other contestants. My goal was not to be carried out on a gurney! They call a cab for you after you are dismissed, and I had the driver stop at a liquor store on the way back to the hotel for a (screw-top) bottle of wine--and when I got back found an email telling me that my book on Austen's Anglicanism had been accepted, which was much more important to me than Jeopardy, so I spent much of the evening talking to family, drinking the bottle in toto, and conveying heartfelt thanks to God on my knees.

Captain Hate,

Do not get me started on the time change!

Until Mitch Daniels was our governor, we did NOT do the time change. The reason was the old guy who owned the Indianapolis Star opposed it.

Well, he died back in the late 80's, and Daniels got elected after he left the Bush 43 Administration. Daniels got it passed because it was "too confusing" for shipping, airlines, media, etc.

What a crock. All you had to remember was that in winter you were on New York time and in the summer, Illinois time.

I absolutely hate it. After Sunday we will not see sunrise until 8:00 AM. It will take us until June before we see sun in the early morning.

Plus, we will lose an hour so we will all be tired by losing an hour's worth of sleep!

jimmyk

You have to pass a pretty rigorous test to get on Jeopardy, so even to make it on the show is impressive. I would think once on it depends so much on the categories. I figured if I ever even got on, with my luck there would be categories like Broadway Musicals that I’d stare at like a deer in headlights. And now I’m sure I’m not as quick as I was 10 or 20 years ago.

Pinandpuller

CASH CAB. I didn't even need an audition. Me and Ben Bailey still laugh about me getting THE FULL COMMIE as the answer to the BONUS QUESTION.

Stephanie Nene Not Your Normal Granma

I tried out years ago back when the test was written. Damned difficult. IIRC it was like 15 seconds to write down your answer and the questions were not in any specific category, so you had like 5 seconds of "WTF category is this" before you tried to write the answer down. I made it past the first round, but not the second. I was fried when I left from the stress.

Is it just me or do the questions/answers seem easier now with more of an assist as to hints found in the answers?

Not quite a Washington's grey horse type situation, but I still think they are making the answer/questions easier.

Pin, grandfather did not invent the rail. He had two technical accomplishments while with the Coast Artillery:

1. Smokeless gun powder for big guns

On the second, he said he miscalculated and put the observation post too close to the gun he was testing. ;)

2009
First lady Michelle Obama led all other recipients (her husband included) in total gift value, receiving 25 gifts valued at nearly $244,266 altogether. A ruby-and-diamond jewelry set from King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia valued at $132,000 accounts for more than half of this total. President Obama received more gifts, at 54, but with a lower overall value of nearly $166,000.

The pricey jewelry set given to the first lady was just one gift that helped Saudi Arabia to far outpace all other countries in 2009 giving, with King Abdullah and his fellow Saudi dignitaries giving out over $342,000 in loot that year. The country's gift list also includes $3,500 jewelry sets to Sasha and Malia Obama, as well as cufflinks, watches, and jewelry presented to top White House aides like Press Secretary Robert Gibbs and Senior Advisers David Axelrod and Valerie Jarrett. Saudi Arabia is one of the four Middle Eastern countries represented in the top 10, which also includes four European states and Ghana.

anonamom

catsmeat, is that episode on YouTube?? If so, I will watch it!

MM, I find your comment about "embarrassing" Mrs. daddy by choosing books daddy wanted in the library offensive. To state that conservative books would be a source of embarrassment is an insult to this readership, and her.
Calling conservative thought an embarrassment is letting the left define what is acceptable. Being afraid to publicly acknowledge what daddy valued is not memorializing who he was.

I do love your additional topics, and agree that they should be included.

2015

The King of Saudi Arabia Gave More Than $1.3M in Gifts to the Obamas Last Year

Before his death earlier this year, he gifted the Obamas what can only be described as a whole lot of swag.

For the president himself: a gold and silver watch, estimated to be worth $18,240; a gold-plated brass replica of the Makkah Clock Tower, estimated at $57,000; and another watch, this one white gold, estimated at $67,000.

In total, these items are worth about $142,240 – chump change compared to the money Abdullah dropped on First Lady Michelle Obama.

[ READ: Is the Saudi Succession Near? ]
From the king, FLOTUS accepted a diamond and emerald jewelry set, an estimated $560,000 value, and a diamond and pearl jewelry set, worth about $570,000.

Obama daughters Sasha and Malia received a diamond and emerald jewelry set and a diamond and ruby jewelry set, totaling $80,000. To share – and from Saudi Prince Miteb bin Abdullah bin Abdulaziz Al-Saud – the Obama family got a model palm tree, several bottles of perfume, eight robes, three capes, a couple of muumuus, a satin outfit, a velvet gown, and four ornate boxes.

Overall bling total: $1,352,240.

Judge calls sentencing recommendation "excessive"
Judge TS Ellis said he believed the recommended sentence of 19 to 24 years would be "excessive" for Paul Manafort.

Before giving Manafort his sentence, Ellis noted he "lived an otherwise blameless life," and was a good friend and generous person to others. That doesn't erase his crimes however, Ellis said.

One thing to note: Manafort will receive a second sentence next week from a different federal judge for the two crimes he pleaded guilty to last year — witness tampering and conspiracy related to his illegal Ukrainian lobbying and money laundering.
