Democrats condemning anti-semitism? It's complicated!
This generational divide has been a slow train wreck coming. My guess? I will say that old-timers like me grew up with the Six Day war, the 1973 war, and the 1972 Munich Olympics. Distinguishing the good guys from the bad guys was pretty easy and Israel also benefited from an underdog status
My kids have grown up with two decades of Intifadas, Jewish settlements, and images of an unassailable Israel beating down hapless Palestinians. Arguments about the two-state solution and the right of return get pushed to one side - the Palestinians look like the sympathetic underdogs to them.
For a bit of flavor, this is from a guest piece in Vox by a Palestinian activist:
For her, this means speaking up for victims of the Saudi war on Yemen and citizens living under the brutal Saudi regime. It also means speaking up for the Palestinians. Just as it is becoming clearer to many Americans that a progressive agenda in the United States includes solidarity with the Palestinian struggle for freedom and equality, Omar’s support for Palestinians is part of her core belief system. As such, she and other new members of Congress are creating the space for others to speak up on this issue without fear.
Omar was elected in 2018, a remarkably deadly year for Palestinians at the hands of the Israeli military. According to a United Nations Human Rights Council Report, the Israeli military killed 138 protesters and injured more than 9,000 others between March and December of that year. They protested to demand an end to 70 years of refugeehood, while also demanding an end to Israel’s cruel and illegal siege of Gaza during weekly protests known as the Great March of Return.
I give that an eye-roll. I suspect Nancy Pelosi does too, but she has to herd these people and good luck to her.
EXCELLENT: Jonathan Chait goes all around on this.
KIDS WILL BE KIDS, OR SOMETHING DARKER?: Hard to know what to make of swastikas at Sidwell. Fortunately there were no MAGA hats!

I so agree with your posts.
If Manafort never agreed to work for the Trump campaign , he would be a free man today.
Podesta will get his day in court.
Manafort May be quiet now but if he gets a pardon he can blow the whistle on him.
If Marc Rich gets a pardon engineered by Eric Holder and Clinton, then Manafort gets one.
Cohen looks unhappy because he will never get one.
Wrt daddy’s gift.
I defer the field to those who can coordinate it.

Long again
So we got off the ferry and veered left into Battery Park.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Battery_(Manhattan)
We walked north on the riverside promenade to the East Coast Memorial
https://www.abmc.gov/cemeteries-memorials/americas/east-coast-memorial
https://www.bing.com/images/search?q=east+coast+memorial&qpvt=east+coast+memorial&FORM=IGRE
Photos above, it's 6 monoliths, with memorials inscribed on both sides, does that make them duoliths? Last name, first name or initials, rank, service unit and state of birth. They're from every where. The naval memorials include USN, USNR and CG. The Army memorials include the Army and the Army Air Force.
They are stark and impressive. If you don't think about it further, that's all it is. When you do stop to think about it you come to a shocking revelation. All those names on the memorial were lost at sea and never recovered. They are at the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean. Unless somebody paid for a headstone over an empty grave, this is a collective headstone.
It's kind of funny, I've seen it before, but that additional insight only occurred to me having Daddy with me. We both marveled at the diversity of rank and MOS, especially on the Army side. There were designations of Army Air Force people whom you could imagine were unable to cross the Atlantic for one reason or another, but a guy in artillery? Must have been a lost troop ship. So we spent some time thinking of the possibilities.
Next up, walking along the promenade we came to Castle Clinton and the loading area for the ferries to Ellis Island and Liberty Island.
https://www.nps.gov/cacl/index.htm
The National Park Service homesite
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Castle_Clinton
"Castle Clinton or Fort Clinton, previously known as Castle Garden, is a circular sandstone fort now located in Battery Park, in Manhattan, New York City. It is perhaps best remembered as America's first immigration station (predating Ellis Island), where more than 8 million people arrived in the United States from 1855 to 1890. Over its active life, it has also functioned as a beer garden, exhibition hall, theater, and public aquarium, and currently is a national monument."
"Castle Clinton stands approximately two blocks west of where Fort Amsterdam was built in 1626, when New York City was known by the Dutch name New Amsterdam. Construction began in 1808 and was completed in 1811. The fort, known as West Battery (sometimes Southwest Battery), was designed by architects John McComb, Jr. and Jonathan Williams. It was built on a small artificial island just off shore.
West Battery was intended to complement the three-tiered Castle Williams on Governors Island, which was East Battery, to defend New York City from British forces in the tensions that marked the run-up to the War of 1812, but it never saw action in that or any war. Subsequent landfill expanded Battery Park, and the fort was incorporated into the mainland of Manhattan Island."
Remember we talked about Castle William, a three tiered battery on Govenours Island. Castle Clinton was one story and built off the shore of Manhattan, accessible only by a boardwalk, but because of landfill, is now on Manhattan proper. If any enemy ship got past Castle William, Castle Clinton would have engaged them. I'm not sure when the forts on Ellis Island and Bledsoes Island were built, but assume it was the same time period. I may be wrong about that, but the New York Harbor was strongly defended.
Castle Clinton, AKA Castle Garden was used for many purposes, possibly the most important was as the precursor to Ellis Island. Daddy and I both whistled while reading that the facility processed 8 million immigrants.
Walking north after leaving the fort I pointed out Battery Park City, which was built on landfill from the World Trade Center construction.
And I was talking with Daddy about how the people of Manhattan were landfill crazy. Own a piece of land that ends at the Hudson or East Rivers? Buy a derelict ship or boat. Fill it with big rocks. Sink it and throw more dirt and fill on it. Voila, more property.
Leaving the park to the north you will see an extraordinary building to your right. Cross the park and view the US Custom House building. My great-grandfather worked there as a US Customs Inspector in the early 1900's. I have his ID from WWI. It's an all-access pass. If it floats or attaches to something that floats he can board it. These were sinecure positions. You didn't get a job there without political backing. I'm not sure, but I think the old rules were that previous inspectors didn't lose their positions in a change of power, but all the new positions went to the winning national party.
I assume that my great-grandfather, being a Republican ward captain in NYC, had something to do with the reward. Daddy and I several times talked about old politics as you will see in later posts.
More to come. Maybe tonight. Maybe tomorrow. I'm finding this cathartic, so I'm in no hurry to finish.

Manafort was sentenced in part for dodging taxes. I assume due to the nature of Manafort's work, particularly international work, that his tax filings are so complex that they trigger an automatic audit (Mel would know this). If so, unless part of what he was guilty of was hiding income that was impossible for anyone to know about, doesn't the verdict illustrate a degree of incompetence at the IRS that should be unacceptable?

You may find this article interesting, Miss Marple.
Also, for everybody who hates autocorrect whether it's at fault or not I'll just leave this part here:
As they examined these 1st generation gravimetric mapping results, an astute observer happened to notice that an unexplained image anomaly in the American Appellations looks somewhat similar to seismically derived images of the coal fields of Appellatia.
For obvious reason the serendipity of this find was exciting. Unexpectantly, a new technology’s look into Earth’s volcanic interior also reveals fossil fuel pockets. And with a 1st Gen orbiting gravimeter under their belt, HP promised that they could readily develop a 2nd Gen device with 10X better sensitivity than the one currently in orbit.

JIB,
Arthur Imperatore is well known in this area. When he had his trucking company APA Transport he had files of news clipping on people. If somebody came in for a job they would through their clippings file to see if they had ever been in trouble.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hudson%E2%80%93Bergen_Light_Rail
One quibble about that. The line currently ends in North Bergen, Hudson County. They plan to use the Erie-Lackawanna Railroad right-of way to extend the line to Englewood Hospital, where I was born. For political reasons unknown to me the towns past Englewood fought against an extension through their towns.
Right now the only thing that is holding up the expansion of the line is funding.

As for Jeopardy, please don't watch if it's on youtube--it's mortifying to me. One question was on things "red" and the prompt was something about Sherlock Holmes. In my bag in the green room was A Study in Scarlet which I was teaching in a graduate seminar a few days hence, and which I know well, but the imp of the perverse and the weirdness of the buzzers led me to say "The Red-Headed League." At the time Turkey Baster Barry said that I figured he was trying to explain why Hillary would win.
In hindsight what he was really doing was telling everyone that what he and his Toddlin Town Gang were at that very moment engaged in, couldn't possibly occur.
He was explicitly saying "the election can't be rigged" but saying to himself with a chuckle "Cuz I already rigged it, suckers."
Luckily he's incompetent and he backed a spavined, sway-backed, crack-hoofed old nag that should have been taken out behind the barn, shot and sent to the knackers about twenty years ago.

TK, this is a real loss. See somebody if you want, but don't diminish the relationship--or your (our) loss and grief-- just because you never "met" him in the physical sense. He was real; you are real. You communicated with him for years. He allowed us into his fascinating life, took us to places we'd never been, and likely will never go. And cared about you, your opinion and well being. That's a lot to lose.
-----
I will not disrespect daddy by allowing some possible Leftist's --the people who advocate baby killing, who attacked Brett Kavanaugh, who smeared The Covington boys--yes I know what they do, AB--- reaction to a book by Thomas Sowell or Victor David Hanson--who are not embarrassments!-- to keep me from memorializing him for who he was, what he valued.
But that is my choice, and there are certainly other venues for me to remember him in a manner that honors his values besides funding the Anchorage librarians--who I know he felt did not serve his values or interests--to continue to ill serve the people of his community in his memory.
I know what daddy thought of George Will.
I'm not going to 'go George Will' in his memory.
Peace and good night.

Wondering where Janet has been. Also Frau. Hope they are both ok.

I see TK already signed off, but take it from someone who knows. If you feel you need to talk with someone - you should talk to someone.

We had a fighter wing at Griffiss AFB -- in addition to the bomber and tanker wings.
I don’t know if you have ever been to a retirement ceremony where an Air Force fighter pilot all of a sudden has the government stop paying his jet fuel tab.
They are a breed apart. Incredible vitality and joie de vivre. Tomorrow was not in focus. Only now. Only present company. Only being alive.
I don’t know any pilot in the military who didn’t hope to jockey a fighter. So many ended up in other aircraft, resigned themselves to it, and made a good life from it.
But, in their hearts they were fighter pilots, and nothing, nor nobody, could make them otherwise.
When you see daddy’s NYC trip -- or his Jane visit in Sturbridge -- that was the spark of a fighter pilot. So much alive that he lit the afterburners of everyone nearby.
Yes, daddy was a FedEx driver in his day job and a family man and dog walker, but he was a fighter pilot in life.
And we need to remind Barbara and the girls how much we are are the better for them sharing daddy with us.

It was About a guy who lived in a potemkin village which was a reality show set of sorts , that's the opposite of this. Robert Flynn was a very real person, there was nothing fake about him, he was awe shucks in chuck yeaghers curious about the world devoted to his family. We cant know everything about someone in this medium, but we got enough.
Some of you were fortunate enough to meet him.

A couple tracks by The Chemistry Set.
They've got a kind of Beatles Revolver-era vibe in these.

daddy loved him some Beach Boys. I've got an iTunes playlist built on his recommendations. Plus far more more knowledge of The Wrecking Crew and other stuff from that microcosm.
And exposure to the FenderTones, who do gorgeous vocal covers of Beach Boys tunes

And in place of yeagher I could very well have referenced Pete conrad who Wolfe sketched vividly in the right stuff.

TK, I was heartbroken over Bad and PUk's loss, too. Loving people always means loss at some point. You not love and not lose, but what a way to live.

sbwaters,
How good of you to remind us of daddy's real personna - a fighter pilot.
Think of this: I can assemble 7 non-JOM people from the Indianapolis area who are really upset by his passing. They never posted here, but they read the comments.
My grandson held him as an example. My sisters were thrilled to meet him.
What am attribute to a life well lived!

jimmyk,
I remember Daddy passing the buck to Momma as to what he would due in retirement. We talked about that a little more after you and Peter left. And a little more on Monday.
He really didn't have a clue as to what he would do. At the bar he was telling us that he wanted to be a bartender on one of the Alaska ferries, but that they had shut down the bar.
I asked about becoming an Alaskan bush pilot. He had considered that and discarded the idea.
We were going back and forth. I got the impression that nothing would compare well with what he already had. So we were talking about what I thought of my retirement. I told him I don't have to wake to an alarm clock. I don't have to do much of anything in a rush. I have as much time to read, watch TV, or surf the internet as I want. That I can devote time as I want, or not, to my hobbies including my genealogical research. I told him to build a man-cave so he wouldn't be underfoot all the time. He laughed at that. Take up woodworking, but not if you're going to lose a thumb to the learning process. He laughed at that too.
And as I'm writing this I'm thinking of his own writing ability. He would have made a great writer I think. But what genre? Can I get a hand up for ---- Travel writer?
Wish I'd have thought about that sooner and mentioned that to him.

Tim, the first officer who found daddy that morning, had only met him the night before. He has spent the last three days communicating with Peter, me, Barbara, and FedEx. He wrote me, "Robert made an immediate impression on me. It was an honor to help in any way I could." He asked if he could give my contact info to Barbara, and I said yes, so I expect to hear from her directly.

I'd just like to condemn hate and intolerance in all of it's forms.
Meanwhile, back at the MOSQUE.

I was hoping he'd write a book on great bars around the world.

Jimmyk, I don't know what to say. You have my respect and love.
I found my Mother dead. As awful as that was, I thank the Lord that it was me who found her. She died suddenly and her funeral was on my Sons' 10th birthday. It's odd, but I'm so at peace because, I was the one. The situation you and our fellow JOMers went thru is so unlikely and bizarre.
I would like to know the cause of death, but I have no doubt that the Lord had a plan for Daddy.

I believe he did Clarice. One post at a time.
Btw, my son still calls me Daddy.

On a lighter note. Jerry Nadler said 2 days ago, that there was NO EVIDENCE WHATSOEVER of MR TRUMP colluding with RUSSIANS.
He then went on to state that he STILL BELIEVED Mr Trump had done so.
There is ZERO EVIDENCE that JERRY "LIPS" NADLER ever gave the TURKEY BASTER BOY a BLOW JOB.
I still believe he did.

Just to update, I got a very nice note from Barbara, who mentioned, among other things, that daddy will arrive tomorrow with a full military escort at FedEx, and that one of the daughters is home, the other soon to arrive. They're having a small memorial ceremony Sunday and a "celebration of life" at a later date.
More later.

So I look at the screen and on the side there's an ad for a Muslim dating app.
"Find the Sheik of your dreams!" "Looking for that special girl in a Burqa?" "Let's do jihad for Honeymoon!" Sometimes life is very strange.
SBW, thank you for that. Rob was carrier qualified and probably did as many traps as most fighter pilots. That takes nerves of steel especially when you're carrying a full load in rough seas.
We have a lot of S-2's here in Cali now that are used as fire bombers, so I could just seem him in the cockpit launching off the deck of a carrier. He had both calmness and garrulousness in him, which I really found charming. A real zest for life.
Now he's probably figuring out what was really in Capone's Vault and where the Library of Alexandria is located in Heaven. He'll probably be fluent in hieroglyphics, Sumerian and and be drinking beers with Jimmy Doolittle and Jan Sobieski by the time we get there.
