Welp if Mueller's Report is out, no reason for the 4D chess pieces to stay stationary, no?

President-Elect Jim,SunnyvaleCA

How gov't sells bad policies:

1) CA has cap and trade
2) massive costs show up as price increases to basically everything
3) then a small portion of the cap'n'trade money is returned to citizens via a check from utility company PG&E
4) if you own a rental which includes utilities you need to cut a check to your tenants

Low Info types say "I got a check!" instead of "How come everything costs much more now?"

"In April 2019, the semi-annual electric California Climate Credit amount is $27.70 per dwelling unit, and the annual gas California Climate credit amount is $25.45 per dwelling unit." ...
"Each dwelling unit should receive the same credit amount regardless of length of service or energy discounts such as California Alternative Rates for Energy (CARE). In addition, if the dwelling units are subject to Utility User's Tax (UUT) or a City Franchise Surcharge (CFS) an additional credit should be calculated by multiplying the UUT or CFS percentage by the amount of the credit."

All the food I've had everywhere in Peru has been delicious but the portions are way too hearty.Lots of top chefs here and excellent fresh fish and produce.I can barely touch the food any more having even so much ceviche and salmon trout, avocado and such. I think the pills for altitude sickness have destroyed my appetite and taste buds.It's been a rather rugged trek for us even though our dil engaged the best luxury tour guides and we stayed at the top hotels everywhere. The Monasterio hotel in Cusco was our favorite--a former Inca palace, converted to a monastery, then a university and now a truly gorgeous hotel. It seems that every 20 miles or so we are in a different temperature zone.
Now that the Shining Path guerrillas have been defeated, money is pouring in here and the milleflores area along the coast in Lima looks like Santa Monica with one luxury apt bldg after another.

Old Lurker:

I was wondering if I maybe should have added a :-) to my own post.

"In fairness, nobody here has ticked off ways we don't fit the Glubb model as to what we are as a people today vs what were were as a people in 1776..."

Well, for one thing, I don't see anybody filing extra-long thumbnails into points, the better to gouge out opponents' eyeballs in bar fights, as was common in colonial Virginia. I suspect that's not exactly what you had in mind, though it's not entirely irrelevant.

"Nor has anybody suggested counter arguments to the Glubb model by listing examples of great powers from history that evolved in the Glubb direction that survived is their greatness. (Somebody did point out that the series of Chinese dynasties had longer lives and differed from Glubb in other ways.)"

I don't think you can just summarily dismiss the relevance of Chinese dynasties. I could have sworn you scaled back "empires" to "states" last time around, but now we're not only back up to "great powers, but only those "that evolved in the Glubb direction." You seem to be working your way into a tautology. You can't effectively argue the inevitability of Glubb's failing state model, by just eliminating every state exception to it. You'll end up with a very selective list of states, and a very limited definition of world powers for comparison.

Indeed, Chinese Dynasties can't be said to conform to a Chinese model either, despite how much they might have in common. Longevity, alone, was all over the map from the Shang at 673 years to the Yuan at 89, or the Eastern & Western Zhou at 805 years collectively, to the Qin (China's namesake!) at a mere 14. Even Korea had long lasting successive dynasties like Goguryeo with 700 years, Silla 718 with an additional 274 as an imperial power, Baekje, at 678, Goryeo with 456. The Joseon dynasty would probably still be around after their first 471 years, if it were not for the Japanese who finally conquered them after 3 1/2 centuries of trying. Though relatively small, there were several periods in time where Korea controlled as much territory as Assyria, with a lot less unproductive sand.

So, yes, there are differences. But how much do we really share culturally or politically with the ancient kingdoms of Assyria or Persia, the Marmelukes or Arabs? And that's the point. Things can both start and finish in different ways. Yes, it's important to study how things fail. It may also be worth examining what we consider a success. Even though the British Empire, for example, may be no more, it dramatically changed the world in profound and often persistent ways. One could argue that much of it survives. We may be a hegemon of sorts, but I also believe we are profoundly unlike most former imperialistic powers, including most of those on Glubb's list. We certainly got off to a very different sort of start.

In any case, I'm not dismissing Glubb out of hand, and I certainly don't argue that "it couldn't happen here." I just don't assume the sky is necessarily falling, or that we will fail in the same way as those before us. Indeed, I think it more likely that we would fail in unexpected ways that we simply didn't recogize in time.

Buckeye

You will know when it is time MM.

I never had any trouble with the altitude when I was there, but much to my chagrin, I have recently discovered that age matters in that regard. I drove up to the top of Haleakala on Maui with my son, a couple years ago (0 to 10,000 ft in 30 minutes). You have to climb a short, not very steep pat to look down into the crater, and I had to stop every few yards, to collect myself. An altitude pill may help with some of the unpleasant side effects, but I suspect it can't actually eliminate the physical stress on your body.

Sidebar gloating is great gloating:

REAL JOURNALISM ALERT! CNN's spin is that there might be a "narrative" in the report of Trump being an "UNWITTING" agent of Russia, which would still be "terrifying." Erin Burnett, Real Reporter, just said this. She teed it up for a guest to say that there's still probably indictments coming.
They are still wishcasting out their fantasies with absolutely no adjustment to their conspiracy theorizing. None at all. Today is just a day where you spin out slightly different conspiracy theories, these altered just enough to not be in direct contradiction with today's refutations.

Well! Bret Baier sure swapped out Mollie Hemingway for his preferred Emergency Panel of liberals in a hurry!
I mean, why would you want Mollie Hemingway talking about this, just because she was the only reporters reporting skeptically -- and accurately -- about this all along? Nah, let's go to liberal Chris Wallace, Bushie Dana Perino, and retard Juan Williams. They won't embarrass Bret.
"Please don't imply that my college BFF Steve Hayes has been peddling lies and conspiracy theories for three years!!!"
Quick, let's get back to our Liberal Bubble of people who have been pushing the fake FusionGPS line for three years now. We don't want to hear from any of those few (brave, insightful) people who bucked Popular Kids Consensus Opinion and actually Read the Fvcking Documents.
Oh they brought Mollie on for the closing two minutes. Good thing we heard from Chris, Dana, and Juan for half an hour. We really needed more of the "But what if Drumpf is really guilty?" speculation that we've had so much of for three years without anyone present to rebut them.

LET'S NOT FORGET: Almost without exception, the GOP foreign policy "serious people" fell for a massive, absurd hoax conspiracy theory. It revealed their fundamental unseriousness.

And yet they continue to preen about other people's conspiracy theories.
AllahPundit still hanging on to hope!
@rkylesmith
So no indictments, no sealed indictments, the fork in this thing has been stuck.

@allahpundit
Well, almost. Conceivably Mueller declined to indict Trump only because DOJ policy prevents indictments of sitting presidents. We'll see if there's anything in the report about that.

The destruction of the earth I've prophesized for three years has been delayed; "we'll see" if my prophecy comes true in the unfolding days.
As Mollie pointed out, if there was collusion or conspiracy, then Trump couldn't have acted alone, surely -- there would be a lot of indictments about those who aided and abetted him or served as conduits and cut-outs. They can be indicted -- and yet, no indictments mentioning conspiracy, collusion, or illegally contacting Russia.

But the Conspiracy Theorists who are disdainful of all conspiracy theories except their own are keeping hope alive for their pet hysteria.

OMG, the liberal NeverTrumper Bret Baier tried to turn it around on Mollie and demand to know if those who suspected Mueller of being a "dirty cop" would also apologize, now that he's clearing Trump.
Yes, Bret, it was those of us who resisted this lunatic hysteria who have the most to apologize for.
We'll see if Bret has the stones to trot out one of his "Surely you must concede, Mollie" condescensions now that his college BFF Steve Hayes' conspiracy theory is dashed to pieces

Jonah Goldberg seized on exactly this spin. I imagine Baier picked it up from him, searching for angles for NeverTrumpers to claim victory:
@JonahNRO
So, if Mueller in effect clears Trump, I expect to see a lot of folks who insisted Mueller was a dirty cop, deep state, witch hunter to suddenly discover Mueller’s integrity. And a lot of folks who insisted Mueller was the Last Honest Man to vilify him as a cover up artist.
It's always "both sides" with this crew now, innit it?
lol get fvcked fatboy

This is a #MeToo-accused liberal, but expect the NeverTrumpers to pick up on this, suddenly:
@RyanLizza
*whispers* Mueller was always a side show the real action is in NY
*whispers* you are a disgraced, incompetent hack
Chuck Todd just says that trump has done permanent harm to the country because he has "spun up" 40% of the country to think the system is rigged against him. Then he conceded "And now 40% on the other side is going to think that." But he only seemed to think the first 40% was a problem. The mention of the other 40% was obligatory and without the fire and fear that accompanied his mention of right-wing people who think the system is rigged.

Leftist anti-government paranoia is... understandable, because Chuck Todd feels it too and is in fact a leftist. It's just right-wing suspicions about government corruption that are dangerous and contemptible.

Catsmeat

CH, there’s a great scholarly book of many years ago by Frank Kermode, called The Sense of an Ending. His ultimate purpose is literary with a great treatment of Wallace Stevens, but his first chapters outline the human propensity to forecast the end of the world (say, given what happened in Europe in 999—suicides, hordes of public self-flagellations) and the equally human propensity to say not merely “never mind” when the apocalypse doesn’t come to pass but instead to come up with a new forecast (for instance, the idea that perhaps 1000 A.D. wasn’t really the year but rather 1033 A.D., 1000 years after the death of Christ, THAT was the ticket—there was a minor wave of suicides and so on in 1032 too). This is what the religious adherents of Russia-collusion are going to do, at least for a while.

I am sure daddy is enjoying this, if souls in bliss are capable of this kind of schadenfreude--I think actually probably they aren't, but then what do I know?
