Per Jacob Sullum of Reason, New Zealand has actually focused on function over form and essentially banned semiautomatic guns which can accept a detachable magazine above five bullets. They decided to abuse the language a bit by describing these as "military style" weapons, even though plenty of hunting rifles not tricked up to look like a prop in a Schwarzenegger film are on the market. The Ruger Mini-14 is the classic of the genre. In the US the hunting version is NOT SCARY but the Tactical version is a DEADLY WEAPON OF WAR.
Or off to war!
So NZ is showing a bit of logic. The gun culture there is much less prevalent and the legal rights are non-existent. This ban might even be somewhat enforceable on a small, remote island nation. OTOH, when they are already averaging around ten gun homicides a year (IIRC) its unlikely that statistically meaningful results will emerge.
Ban all the politicians!

i've never understood how western nations are so frightened at the prospect of violence against Muslims and their imams while the Religion of Peace is wreaking havoc worldwide in over 35,000 incidents since 9/11.
after a violent incident in either direction, jihad lite kicks in with western nations cowering in "solidarity" with a people who will never except western governance or religious practices; or, modify western laws to accomodate the sharia requirement that all muslims engage at least in jihad lite (pen vs. sword).
really, i do understand: western governments and the political class do not *comprehend* what Islam is and how jihad is the principal conversion/subjugation tool codified by the sharia.

Ok I haven’t read Glubb, so maybe I’m off target, but I don’t think the US is an empire. It’s a single extraordinarily successful country, with very little hegemony beyond its borders, and no real interest in expansion. So some of the ills that befell historical empires don’t really threaten the US. That’s not to say we can’t weaken or destroy ourselves from within.

With apologies to TomM for veering immediately OT but I was willowed between preview & post on the last thread. Again! I'm reposting here, edited slightly for relevance.
TomR:
Rather than getting all excited over the possibility that a blurry photo of a tall guy's back might be Comey exiting from a White House meeting with Sessions, Rosenstein, Barr & Huber (while the President was elsewhere), instead of, say, Session's secret service protection, I'd have thought you'd have leapt all over Neo's 6:44 link to the "little noticed" Letter from deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein. from last June. I know I found it somewhat encouraging.
Assuming RR is to be believed, it's also an Occam's razor explanation of the President's apparent confidence that requires virtually no 4-D chess at all.
I personally have next to no confidence in DoJ higher-ups' commitment to DoJ policy (Rosenstein among them), but if RR sticks to those guns, we're going to be getting a very short report. Hopefully, that means nixing narratives like Patrick Fitzgerald's summary cloud over the White House — although I notice that Reuters already has that meme locked and loaded. If this story had come over the AP transom, sbw would be making hay right now: How Mueller kept a lid on Trump-Russia probe:Gunning for the President is going to be a lot harder when the MSM can't rely on Mueller's secret probe for ammunition!

Jimmy "So some of the ills that befell historical empires don’t really threaten the US. That’s not to say we can’t weaken or destroy ourselves from within."
Don't get distracted by "Empire", Jimmy.
The changes that befall - OK, a Country - as it moves from high energy, high risk pioneers up though various stages of becoming richer and more powerful society, "changes" in many demographic, intellectual, moral, and qualities such that staying on top becomes untenable. And often it is the next door neighbor, new to that pioneer spirit and energy, and having nothing to lose that tips him off the pinnacle.
Scottish writer Tytler made much the same observations in the 1700's, and he credited thinkers back to Socrates for spotting the same cycles.
Read Glubb, forget "Empire" and forget that the US is not even on his list of top 10 or whatever or that other "empires" were not listed, and don't get sucked into "250 years and not a minute longer"...and just reflect on the qualities common at various life stages of great powers and tell me how we fit, and then which stage smells like us today.
Think of it as the national equivalent of "shirtsleeves to shirtsleeves in three generations" of families.

Posted by: JM Hanes | March 22, 2019 at 03:18 PM
:-) JMH. I like Black Knight and will add it to the list.
In fairness, nobody here has ticked off ways we don't fit the Glubb model as to what we are as a people today vs what were were as a people in 1776 or even 1941. Nor has anybody suggested counter arguments to the Glubb model by listing examples of great powers from history that evolved in the Glubb direction that survived is their greatness. (Somebody did point out that the series of Chinese dynasties had longer lives and differed from Glubb in other ways.)
In summary, human nature is such that we would all rather see something bad and say "that would never happen to us", or "this time it will be different".
Posted by: Old Lurker | March 22, 2019 at 03:28 PM
OL, I don't discount the things you list as threats, or that there is life cycle. I'm just saying that many cases of empires or would-be empires falling have to do with expansion beyond what they could control or defend. That we aren't in that business increases our life expectancy, but doesn't make us immortal.

MM, problem is Fourth Turning was all about the US, and was based on several hundred years of experience with a pretty homogeneous Western-Judeo-Christian population, many shared histories and therefore motivations, and many shared religious foundations and core beliefs. All of that was thrown into the pot along with an ingenious and respected "Partnership Agreement" in the form of our Constitution.
With all those ingredients in the pot, the turnings all were variations on a theme.
I think the pot has been turned over and now has much different ingredients with which to guide the next turning, and no effective "Partnership Agreement" left as a recipe.
Jimmy can teach you to whistle if you like.

jimmyk,
We may not have as many "colonies" as the British Empire, but the sun sets on their's but not on our reach. No country in the history of the world has our current reach. Having territory today is not as important as being able to defend your Homeland, thousands of miles away from it.
We are still in Germany, South Korea, Japan, the Middle East, large parts of East and Central Africa, NATO, the Pacific (Marshall Islands, Guam, etc.) even in the Caribbean, the South Atlantic (Diego Garcia). And that is just our military. Our private enterprise is in over 160 countries. I think Coca-Cola may be in more:)
In re: this talk about scrapping the Truman, I have a lot of friends who are ex-Navy Pilots, and there is only one kind: they have to know how to take off and land on a carrier. They can't understand the war planning strategy that relegates a carrier (talk about a strategic colony) to the backwaters of warfighting. Neither can I, and I did my dissertation/project on developing long-distance, long-time interval strategic weapons delivery. Of course, that is back in 1968 but it is true to this day. You need a combo of strategic strike force (SAC, now something else), tactical cover (ground cover fighters and strikers), a mobile army both infantry, artillery and armored, plus a Navy to control the seas.
The ordinance is secondary. No one on planet Earth has our array of an ordinance. It is the command structure we need to replace, not the weapons, they develop themselves via technology and science.

That thread was interesting. I hadn't really thought about urban vs. suburban and rural black voters, but it absolutely correct to think of them as separate voting groups.
The only way to win over black urban voters is school choice. That the GOP has not done so is almost criminally negligent, and proves how academic the party is, stuck on theory and principle and not on actually fixing a very real problem that people desperately want fixed.
Posted by: Robin, eff 'em all | March 22, 2019 at 04:18 PM
School Choice for urban blacks? Why did Ron DeSantis win the governor's race for Florida against a progressive black candidate? Robin, you can guess, and answer the question. He proved it works.
The Step-Up program in Florida has more black kids in great private or parochial schools than any state in the union. I think RG when he pipes in, will agree with the success of this program. I saw first hand for 5 years as President of our Catholic school board.

He wouldn't have been shot down if his Pappy didn't use his influence to get his intellectually challenged son into the academy where he demonstrated that fact.
Now you have to ask yourself this question: Why would you take the penultimate ranked graduate of such as prestigious university (back then it was) and put him into fighter plane school? Instead of like a job in human resources, or as a beach master? Why?

Nearly 200 charges against 34 people and three Russian companies have been filed since the beginning of the investigation. Six of those indicted are former Trump advisers. Twenty-six are Russian nationals.

Such a phony government intrusion into our political and constitutional system. If Mueller, or Rosenstein, or Sessions are so-called patriots they should be embarrassed. I am. My country has seen some deep divisions ever since the founding but not like this. Even the Civil War was fought out, not like this.
I blame our education system. Not just the academy but also the K-12 process. It is the number one corrupter of our society as we remember it, and want it to continue to be. God bless America. No one else will.

Preet Bharara: Mueller might be prepping new indictments

Chuck Knox, the late former coach of the L.A. Rams once said "[that] Those who live in hope die in shit". Describes CNN/MSNBC/WAPO/NYT to a tee.
