The NY Times runs a shocking headline:
Border at ‘Breaking Point’ as More than 76,000 Unauthorized Migrants Cross in a Month
The number of migrant families crossing the southwest border has once again broken records, with unauthorized entries nearly doubling what they were a year ago, suggesting that the Trump administration’s aggressive policies have not discouraged new migration to the United States.
More than 76,000 migrants crossed the border without authorization in February, an 11-year high and a strong sign that stepped-up prosecutions, new controls on asylum and harsher detention policies have not reversed what remains a powerful lure for thousands of families fleeing violence and poverty.
The nature of the problem can be confusing and the Times quickly switches over to playing dumb:
President Trump has used the escalating numbers to justify his plan to build an expanded wall along the 1,900-mile border with Mexico. But a wall would do little to slow migration, most immigration analysts say. While the exact numbers are not known, many of those apprehended along the southern border, including the thousands who present themselves at legal ports of entry, surrender voluntarily to Border Patrol agents and eventually submit legal asylum claims.
The main problem is not one of uncontrolled masses scaling the fences, but a humanitarian challenge created as thousands of migrant families surge into remote areas where the administration has so far failed to devote sufficient resources to care for them, as is required under the law.
Well. We are seeing a surge in immigrant families claiming asylum because if children are involved the family won't be detained for more than three weeks:
Families with children can be held in detention for no longer than 20 days, under a much-debated court ruling, and since there are a limited number of detention centers certified to hold families, the practical effect is that most families are released into the country to await their hearings in immigration court. The courts are so backlogged that it could take months or years for cases to be decided. Some people never show up for court at all.
As to the idea that a wall wouldn't help, the Times reports within this story (and more here) that the wall at the legal crossing in Tijuana let Trump enforce the new policy of keeping asylum applicants in Mexico while their claim was processed. Hence the re-routing by would-be immigrants away from areas that have a wall and into the wild.
The Times also had fun with numbers last summer and we see it in some charts today: total apprehensions were much higher in the late 90's and early 2000's. But that was mostly single men who could be turned back to Mexico the same day. (Consequently those single men did not cross and promptly surrender). Now we are "apprehending" families as they surrender and claim asylum. Shortages of detention facilities, medical facilities, judges to process claims - all a problem.
From the Times:
Central American families have become the new face of undocumented immigration.
In the first five months of the fiscal year that began in October, the Border Patrol detained 136,150 people traveling in families with children, compared with 107,212 during all of fiscal 2018.
A trend toward family migration from Central America that began when Barack Obama was president has endured, after temporarily dipping during Mr. Trump’s first year in office.
A picture being worth a thousand words...
Pew Research has a similar chart with commentary.
If Congress won't fund a wall that could change our asylum laws. As if Democrats don't want this crisis.
FUN WITH NUMBERS AND PICTURES:
Here is a very misleading graph showing the huge illegal influx twenty years ago (mostly single men) with a picture of what looks to my cis-normative eyes to be a family.

It makes me wonder about that old joke. When you give a drunk coffee you wind up with a wide awake drunk.

I'm no expert, but he clearly had control over his drinking, to never drink at home or in violation of the constraints of his job. More important, I suspect he engaged in a bit of joking hyperbole. For example, on Sunday when he posted here about being "two sheets to the wind" at the bar with me and Peter, we were on our first beer, or maybe not even. Similar to his comments about Jodi, I suspect.
Jimmy k, got that, and have always assumed it. As one could say about me as well. Except the part about Jodi.
My point here people--we are older than we were last year. These electrolyte imbalances and arrhythmias do NOT mean you are a lying in the gutter, drinking out of a brown paper bag alcoholic.

https://archive.fo/EPYR9
Can this possibly be legal? Somebody apparently thinks so, because copies of the Mueller report are being offered for sale online right now, and according to the pre-order announcement the release date is going to be “March 26”. As a former attorney, I have no idea how anyone can legally do this. As I have documented previously, when Mueller is done with his report he is supposed to submit it to Attorney General William Barr, and then it will be up to Barr to determine how much of the report, if any, will be made available to the public. I suppose that it is possible that Barr has already agreed to release the full report to the public at the end of this month, but I find it difficult to believe that it would have been kept so quiet. To me, something is not right about all of this.
Earlier today, I was shocked to hear that the Mueller Report was being offered for sale online, and so I decided to check it out for myself.
And sure enough, you can find it listed on Amazon.com for $9.37 right here. “Robert S. Mueller III” is listed as an author, “Special Counsel’s Office U.S. Department of Justice” is listed as an author, and the listing tells us that the introduction will be written by attorney Alan Dershowitz.

Where do you get that magnesium water (if I remember correctly what you said this morning)?
I quit drinking gin because I noticed I was getting heart races occasionally. I take a medication for that because years ago I wound up in the ER when one wouldn't stop and that is when I found out my BP was so high.
I am concerned about electrolytes because I take 4 meds for BP and heart rate, and I often feel like I am getting dehydrated even though I drink water a lot.

...of course I post on the dead thread...
I'm not so sure that the emergency declaration vote isn't canny politics. If enough Republicans say that they will vote with the dems, but only enough to give them 51 votes, then this forces the dem senators -- all of them -- to vote against border security, and in favor of terrorism and drug and human trafficking. Those votes can be used to bludgeon them in the election. And, since they DON'T have the votes to override the veto, no-harm-no-foul on actually promoting invasion/terrorism/trafficking. The Republican senators are Rand Paul, who won't be hurt because Texas admires a man of principles as long as he's not hurting them, and the Dope Sisters are just dopey. This is standard legislative politics -- on close votes, once you have enough votes to win, you let a few of your guys vote the other way to help the individual lawmakers with the voters at home, but with the understanding that if you need him to switch to your side he will. (This is the job of the House and Senate Whips of each party -- counting the votes and calling for the vote at the right time.)
This is similar to the Republicans scheduling a vote on the Green New Deal. Force the dems to actually vote for the thing rather than just talk.

Since I didn't know how to make that happen at the moment, I told him by e-mail a bit of what I knew based on daddy's last post (forgive me, quoting from part of it that described his NYC tour with Jim_NJ), and he was very touched, and said if anyone wants to reach out to him, he'd be happy to communicate. He said he is "close to getting home," and plans to speak with daddy's family tomorrow. And in particular, Jim_NJ, if there's some way for me to get you his contact info, or vice-versa, he'd like to hear from you.

Dave,
I didn't really look at the flags. Kudos to you for doing so!

I wonder if it could have been an artery at the back of heart. They don't show up easily unless you do the whole nuclear tread mill with dye test. My husband had one of these "widow makers" and it was completely unknown to us until he felt a small twinge and we insisted on tests, which the Drs. did not recommend at first. The EKG was normal and just fine. The Dr. said if not for the dye treadmill, it would never have been detected and it would have blown one day.

No armchair autopsy, Dorothy Jane.

I kind of feel the same as ext, but I realize people cope with loss by trying to make sense of it.
I hope JimNJ sees my post above. I think it would mean a lot for Barbara to be able to hear from him. Otherwise, I have (via Jane) the home address if you want to send Barbara a note of condolence.

All @GOPLeader did was challenge Democrats to live by the same standard they apply to Republicans when it comes to bigotry. And look what has happened: they are in an internal civil war because the D base won’t condemn antisemitism, and the leadership lacks the courage to insist.

I find the armchair autopsy extremely offensive
Ex - I think it is understandable that everyone is trying to figure out what might have happened. This was totally out of the blue and as Buckeye just posted, pilots are routinely tested.
Years ago we had a Delta pilot, age 59, who returned home from a flight, felt like he was getting a cold, lay down for a nap and never woke up. (massive heart attack after passing his physical 3 weeks prior.) There were no other warning signs for him, either.
Everyone is trying to process this and I think we are all in shock as well as sad.

I may be old fashioned but is it ok to drink if you are taking medication?
It depends what medication you are asking about.
Your pharmacist should be marking your prescription bottles with the little sticker that says No Alcohol if its a bad fit.

I am not a legal expert but it seems to me that the DNC has failed to prove they were hacked.
