The NY Times runs a shocking headline:
Border at ‘Breaking Point’ as More than 76,000 Unauthorized Migrants Cross in a Month
The number of migrant families crossing the southwest border has once again broken records, with unauthorized entries nearly doubling what they were a year ago, suggesting that the Trump administration’s aggressive policies have not discouraged new migration to the United States.
More than 76,000 migrants crossed the border without authorization in February, an 11-year high and a strong sign that stepped-up prosecutions, new controls on asylum and harsher detention policies have not reversed what remains a powerful lure for thousands of families fleeing violence and poverty.
The nature of the problem can be confusing and the Times quickly switches over to playing dumb:
President Trump has used the escalating numbers to justify his plan to build an expanded wall along the 1,900-mile border with Mexico. But a wall would do little to slow migration, most immigration analysts say. While the exact numbers are not known, many of those apprehended along the southern border, including the thousands who present themselves at legal ports of entry, surrender voluntarily to Border Patrol agents and eventually submit legal asylum claims.
The main problem is not one of uncontrolled masses scaling the fences, but a humanitarian challenge created as thousands of migrant families surge into remote areas where the administration has so far failed to devote sufficient resources to care for them, as is required under the law.
Well. We are seeing a surge in immigrant families claiming asylum because if children are involved the family won't be detained for more than three weeks:
Families with children can be held in detention for no longer than 20 days, under a much-debated court ruling, and since there are a limited number of detention centers certified to hold families, the practical effect is that most families are released into the country to await their hearings in immigration court. The courts are so backlogged that it could take months or years for cases to be decided. Some people never show up for court at all.
As to the idea that a wall wouldn't help, the Times reports within this story (and more here) that the wall at the legal crossing in Tijuana let Trump enforce the new policy of keeping asylum applicants in Mexico while their claim was processed. Hence the re-routing by would-be immigrants away from areas that have a wall and into the wild.
The Times also had fun with numbers last summer and we see it in some charts today: total apprehensions were much higher in the late 90's and early 2000's. But that was mostly single men who could be turned back to Mexico the same day. (Consequently those single men did not cross and promptly surrender). Now we are "apprehending" families as they surrender and claim asylum. Shortages of detention facilities, medical facilities, judges to process claims - all a problem.
From the Times:
Central American families have become the new face of undocumented immigration.
In the first five months of the fiscal year that began in October, the Border Patrol detained 136,150 people traveling in families with children, compared with 107,212 during all of fiscal 2018.
A trend toward family migration from Central America that began when Barack Obama was president has endured, after temporarily dipping during Mr. Trump’s first year in office.
A picture being worth a thousand words...
Pew Research has a similar chart with commentary.
If Congress won't fund a wall that could change our asylum laws. As if Democrats don't want this crisis.
FUN WITH NUMBERS AND PICTURES:
Here is a very misleading graph showing the huge illegal influx twenty years ago (mostly single men) with a picture of what looks to my cis-normative eyes to be a family.
I spoke with daddy's co-pilot this afternoon. Both he and Peter have been unbelievable, with Jimmy close behind.
He only knew Daddy for 10 hours. He is the one who found him dead and it looks like it was before he went to bed. I last heard from him at 7:37 PM.
He's a great guy with a lot on his shoulders. Barbara would like to see the data before he died and I have offered to send her all my texts from that day and the day before - which were all about his day with Jimmy, Peter and JimNJ and what a great time he was having. Jim NJ gave him a fabulous tour of NY which Daddy absolutely loved. And he loved those 3 guys too, thinking he was twins with Peters, except different.
At any rate I'll be working with the co-pilot and perhaps will get a chance to communicate directly with Barbara. If anyone besides her knows how devoted Daddy was to his family, it's me.
Right now I'd leave it to cards and flowers. Daddy isn't home yet and won't be for a while, so I expect the funeral is not going to happen soon. I'll keep everyone posted if I learn anything. I will say the co-pilot was very impressed with the people at JOm he dealt with. Thank you.

I'm sure someone will send Barbara the photos of daddy smiling with the JOM guys. I imagine it will comfort her to know his last 2 days were spent in the U.S. with friends rather than...who knows where in the world he could have been and alone.

I think we can all find some comfort in that it was quick by the look of it. He didn't get to say goodbye to his family and friends and it is we the living who will grieve, but I take a little joy in having known him and that he was with friends almost until the end.

Look at all the people he touched here, and you know there are lots more he touched out in meatspace. Whatever his purpose on earth he clearly made his time meaningful. There’s a lesson in that for me.

A little long, but I think you will like this.
So around noon Daddy and I cabbed down to the Staten Island Ferry.
https://www.siferry.com/
Now the ferry is the best bargain in NYC for touring because it's free. Daddy says, "free?" I say, "free." What you'll see is a well guarded relatively new terminal. You/we walked in the front door and head up an escalator. Cops and guard dogs monitor your entrance, you don't have to pass through a security checkpoint or magnetometer, they are not worried about small arms and such. They worry about bombs and that's what the dogs are sniffing for. They are sensitive enough that they don't need to approach you to detect the vapor. So it's secure, but not intrusively so.
When you get up one level that's the boarding area. Three slips so three doors. You don't need to wonder about which of those large doors will open next. The crowd is your indicator. There will be, depending on your timing, dozens or hundreds of riders waiting at the next door to open.
Daddy and I got there with 4-5 minutes to spare so there were several hundred people already waiting. Daddy looks around and wonders if we'll all fit. Yes. Ferry pulls in and you watch a stream of people debark. I point them out and explain that at the end of the ride everyone has to debark. When everyone is off and the ferry has been quickly searched the doors open and everyone surges out to board. My prfeerence is the second deck on the left or New Jersey side. If the weather is nice standing at the outside railing is best. Because of the weather we chose to stay inside in some seats that have views through windows.
As the ferry pulls out it starts to veer toward New Jersey so Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty loom larger. Aside - both of those islands were at one point in time forts. NYC Harbor was heavily gunned up after the war of 1812.
You also get a view of the southern part of the "Gold Coast" NJ's shoreline. It has been heavily built up in the last 40 years.

Explains a little about how the Jersey City shoreline was dominated by about a mile long railyard deadhead where they could ferry the train cars over to Manhattan. I brought an old map showing the railyard so Daddy could visualize the change. Over a mile long section of railyard turned into one of the largest construction sites in the area.

This is the best map I can find on-line. I was using an old Hudson County Hagstrom map with much more detail that made much more clear to Daddy just how big an area it was.

Images of the Jersey City skyline - none of those buildings - to the best of my knowledge is more than 40 years old. In a master stroke one developer built a shopping mall there. Why was that smart? For the low cost of a PATH train round trip ticket NYC shoppers flock to the Newport Mall to buy clothing tax-free. In NYC they would have to pay an 8.75% sales tax on clothing. A carton of cigarettes in NJ will cost $75-90 compared to around $130-140 in NYC.
More to come but this should give you an idea about what Daddy and I were talking about on the outbound leg of the ferry trip.

Good evening. I discovered Mr Maquire's blog through his Plame analysis back when I was still living in Europe, more in PUK's time zone than EST. I wanted to add my condolences on the sudden loss of Daddy. The ongoing conversation on this site has been a delight, his posts were a big part of that these last years. It's been such fun being a fly on y'all's wall, and now a bit of shared pang as well.

--I saw a meme today that said life is two dates with a dash in the middle. Make the dash count.--
Our pastor has used that theme a couple of times.

“The fake document operation was operating in Woodburn, Oregon for ten years. The Fraud Doc Ring communicated with customers using Facebook, email, Snapchat and in person, the plea deal states. The customers paid through PayPal.”
Be an alien running a fake id\document fraud service using Facebook, Snapchat, and PayPal… for 10 years, no problem but random conservative who use the wrong pronoun get banned.

Narciso,
Half the streets in North Bergen slope down to Tonnele Ave. US 1-9. Have you ever seen the railyard I was talking about? Did you leave before the "Gold Coast" real estate boom?
