College admissions scam rekindles scrutiny of Kushner's Harvard acceptance, $2.5M pledge http://a.msn.com/01/en-us/BBUHtgT?ocid=st … I'd think Harvard et al's admission-for-pay practices for every student would come under a glass for the past 60 rs, at least, not people you'd like disfavor today.

From ZH article,

It's not just actresses.

Update 3/12/2019 2:54PM EST: It was also disclosed that Willkie Farr & Gallagher Co-Chairman Gordon R. Caplan has been charged. Caplan, described in the complaint as “an attorney and the co-chairman of an international law firm based in New York”, is reportedly said to have donated $75,000 to the brokering entity in question in order to have SAT test administrators correct his daughter's answers after she finished it.

Update 3/12/2019 1:46PM EST: The complaint alleges that Ex-Pimco CEO Hodge “agreed to use bribery to facilitate the admission of two of his children to USC as purported athletic recruits” and, according to Bloomberg, he "sought to enlist the support of a cooperating witness to help a third child gain college admission". Hodge declined to comment to Bloomberg when reached on his mobile phone, reportedly only saying, “I can’t talk right now.”

Update 3/12/2019 1:14PM EST: Ex-Pimco CEO Douglas Hodge was also named among those charged in the scheme. Hercules Capital also fell in intraday trading when it was revealed that its CEO and largest holder Manuel Henriquez was named in the DOJ affidavit.

Anyway, if you buy music through BandCamp, how hard is it to import into your iTunes library?

I'm sure there's a way to do it because you own the digital file and should be able to move it anywhere you want. I've just always played things from the Bandcamp site.

Ugh, Saint Patrick's day isn't my favorite day of the year mainly because it's amateur hour for a lot of drunk dumbasses and most of the beers featured aren't my faves.

Levin was railing about the absolute stupidity surrounding most discussions of impeachment which is a constitutional issue and not a political one as laid out in the notes from the constitutional convention of, I think he said Alexander Hamilton, that were released fifty years later.

This is an account of the Chosin Few. I didn't know much about this battle, and this is worth reading to understand the hardships they endured.

Posted by: MissMarple2 | March 13, 2019 at 06:45 AM

Miss Marple, thank you for that link. Last Autumn a friend sent me a book rec for
The Last Stand of Fox Company: A True Story of U.S. Marines in Combat
https://www.amazon.com/Last-Stand-Fox-Company-Marines/dp/B002EQ9LBC

Like many, perhaps most, I had heard of the Chosin campaign, but i had no/No/NO/ N O idea.

I immediately followed up with
On Desperate Ground: The Marines at The Reservoir, the Korean War's Greatest Battle
https://www.amazon.com/Desperate-Ground-Marines-Reservoir-Greatest/dp/0385541155
which is also a must. Hampton Sides takes a more strategic view than Drury's in-the-foxhole perspective.

Two excellent books for those, like me, first-timers learning about the battle.

Learning about the horrific days and nights the MARINES endured, with grace, honor, and ferocity, should be required reading for every high school boy and girl in America.

Also, my impression of MacArthur--who I did not know much about except the 'greatness' etc, dropped considerably.

Rest in Peace Pagar and Frau.

I shared a bit of a bond with Pagar; he living in Panama, and Panama being one of my earlier Navy postings (at SouthCom HQ when it was at Quarry Heights). Years ago we used to trade some emails about this or that, nothing in particular. Some of the ex-pats in Panama are great--I include Pagar in that group.

I did not know Frau, but I always appreciated her clever, ever-changing last name reflecting some topical matter. It was something very similar to what my own momma (now passed 30 years ago) used to do in her letters to me. Every time I read one of Frau's posts, I would think of mom.

God Bless and hold you both.

MissMarple2

Sandy Daze,

I graduated from high school in 1966. I had two teachers (one history and one English lit) who had been Marines during the Korean War.

They never spoke much about it. The Korean War was covered in about 2 days at the end of the year in my American History class, and shortly after I graduated the Vietnam War started ramping up, so I had never read much about it. Thanks for those book recommendations. I will look for them at the library.

And supposedly these were armed raids involving multiple agents CH.

Historically, I’ve been a supporter of police. Hell, my father was a cop.

Law enforcement is starting to lose me over these tactics. If they’re oh so concerned about “officer safety” (which is the inevitable excuse for this), suspend their passports (and don’t tell me that can’t be done), call their lawyers and have them bring these people in. No officer exposure to anything more dangerous than a telephone is needed,

Incredible illustration of what happens when you lack integrity.

How horrible to have parents like that. As damaging in its own way as the moms who closed their eyes to what Michael Jackson was doing with their sons.

Parents participating in the scheme paid between $15,000 and $75,000 per test to have someone from Edge pose as their child and take their SAT or ACT exams for them, or to correct exam questions just after the test to boost their scores. In at least one case, the student was unaware that their parent had paid to improve their admission test.

Shouldn't that be illegal?

Isn't that more than just tax fraud?

Another Bob

We’re also seeing an annoying recent side-effect of arrests like these - that twitter gang is always claiming the arrest of some rando for bribing university people to get their kid into a college is proof of the Trump swamp-draining.

Captain Hate

Send Lisa Page's transcript where she fingers the Bathhouse Rat to Martha Raddatz for an on the air nervous breakdown and facelift blowout.

anonamom

AB, looks like the crime is that the universities didn't get the money! ;-)

It was under the table payoffs to coaches who pretended to be recruiting the kids, SAT and ACT proctors/officials, and what I am guessing is going to be extremely serious, making donations knowingly to what must be some kind of sham "charity" and then taking the tax deduction.

sbwaters

Hi, Sandy. I have my copy of Hillbilly and it will be my travel and vacation book over the next month+. Thank you.

Instead, I encourage models of transformation from within, where technology is built ground-up, with and by the community in question, rather than being trickled down from the West. Two promising models highlighting this are the Design Justice Framework from Sasha Costanza-Chock, an associate Professor of Civic Media at MIT, and Cheryl Ann Hodgkinson-Williams and Henry Trotter’s ‘Social Justice Framework for Understanding Open Educational Resources and Practices in the Global South.’ With such models of inclusive design, and many more emerging, I see hope for technology and edtech being used equitably to build sustainable societies.

Education for sustainable societies needs to have justice at its core. Such a society should strive for equity within itself and between other societies. It needs to recognize and overcome the power and dominance exercised by some over others. It needs to give room for previously marginalized and subjugated societies to grow, allowing for equal opportunity.

Sustainable societies need to embrace difference—not enforce homogeneity and assimilation that often comes hand in hand with the embracing of “global” value systems. With these principles of justice at the core of education, whether online or face-to-face, we can strive towards genuinely building peace.

https://www.edsurge.com/news/2019-03-04-empathy-isn-t-enough-power-imbalances-in-edtech-must-shift

As I keep warning, ed is really not about math, science, and history as bodies of knowledge anymore.

I will add that someone was looking out for my parents yesterday as my dad managed to open the front door and "go for a walk" while my mom worked on the books for taxes. Sje calls me hysterically late yesterday afternoon that he is not in the house and that the police and fire dept are. She also added that he can't get far.

That latter statement turned out not to be true as police found him more than two miles away in a park with ballfields. Had he gone in a different direction he would have quickly gotten to a very busy road.

James D.

Another Bob,

Once I saw that the loudmouth anti-gun kid David Hogg got admitted to Harvard (or Yale - can't remember) then I was sure the fix was in on all of this stuff. Didn't Brooke Shields go to Princeton?

You may not think this has anything to do with draining the swamp, but the swamp is much bigger than DC. Removing the cachet and influence of universities is just one tiny edge. There are a lot of money-laundering cases in the works now, too, not only in the US but in foreign banks which have ties to the US banks.

There are huge spheres of influence in DC which drag this country down. One area is this one, shown to be frauds.

Illegal money is another, whether from foreign donations (like the Chinese donors to the Jeb Bush PAC) or the laundered money from the drug cartels used to keep the border open.

ALL of this stuff has to be ended, not just some arrests of Hillary people (although I think that is coming as well).

Miss M,

the code is a bunch of comment lines (the green stuff), some variable declarations (gee wiz, we need some variables in here, give them provocative names instead of Foo like normal humans assign), and some component code inclusions (which could be anything including cat gifs in the files listed). So it might compile, but there is no way to tell what it would do from that sample.

So the code sample doesn't explain anything, but looks spooky. Are CIA coders that dimwitted? Just me, but I would never leave comments in something I was compiling for nefarious purposes. Nor would I name variables anything but random character sequences. You don't want to deliver your adversary a path to fix what you broke.
