Although right now my news boycotts encompasses college admission, Boeing crashes, and Trump's border emergency. Basically the NY Times front page. There's probably a story in the sports section I am also boycotting but I don't have the heart to look.

This, OTOH, I am emphatically NOT boycotting: Yankees 14, Red Sox 1. That's going to be the result pre-season, regular season, and post-season (if the Sox make it...). All Rise!

"Vertical tasting" means trying the same wine (or other booze) as a function of time. So you might try a Pinot from 2001, 2005, 2010, 2015 and 2018.

They taste very different, and it is well worth doing. The difference is in the aging and the quality of the crop for that year.

I didn't mention it directly, but I really do mean the same wine. So it is the same in name and processing -- the only variable is time.

The Sonoma wineries have been pretty good about this. Once the tasting room people know that you are not idiots out to get booze for the day, often they do this for you. Alexander Valley Vineyards is one that has been notable.

What DrJ described works for *some* beers too. In fact a place close to me, The Wine Spot, had a vertical tasting in October for Bell's Expedition Stout featuring four different years of an imperial stout. The current year tasted so good (they gave generous pours) that I was prepared to be slightly disappointed but the hops faded in each successive year and what started out as a bitter dark chocolate taste became more like milk chocolate with some other dark fruit flavors being more forward.

There's a method to their offerings since I now have a sixer cellaring for future consumption.
