jimmyk

did Momma know about the JOM family?

I recall that she was vaguely aware. It would be nice to send her a compendium of the tributes posted here, if we can manage that.

Jack is Back!

Most recently was his disgust over the smothering of the John Fry story. Janet, who I hope checks in soon, has a similar gift.

jimmyk,

One way to honor daddy would be to have one of our internet sleuths find a photo of John Fry, and post it here.

GUS

I couldn't agree MOAR Jimmy. Janet is awesome.
Even when Daddy was pissed off, he kept his perspective and was lovable as hell.

Jack is Back!

Didn't one of daddy's daughters post here once, or am I conflating that with daddy posting something he daughter (the CalTech one) wrote to him??

Momto2

I am thinking of daddy's daughters this morning. We are not sad for him but so sad for them and of course for "mama." Being unmarried in their 20's, I imagine that like my daughter of the same age, the thought of not having a dad to walk them down the aisle one day is heartbreaking.

Again, not sad for him. My mom always said her wish was to go to sleep one night and wake up in heaven. And that's exactly what happened at the age of 87. Some die after long and painful illnesses and daddy died after an exhilarating day of touring/sharing with JOM friends.

Just my thoughts while searching for something positive in the midst of our great loss...

Captain Hate

John Fry is the personification of the Deep State; a faceless bureaucrat protected by the MFM gatekeepers befitting a Stasi operative. I wish there was some way to get Levin interested in this but if I called the show, assuming I got through, he might dismiss it as a kook theory.

It would be a good way to honor daddy though...

MissMarple2

I have a friend who reads this blog but never posts.

I had called her last night to tell her the sad news. She called me this morning to tell me how much this had affected her, because she felt like she had gotten to know him through his writing and my stories of meeting him at Shapiro's. She was still upset.

daddy was a wonderful friend. Not nearly as close as his friendship with Jane, but enough that he made me try to think more positively and enjoy life.

I still cannot get over his leaving us so suddenly.

Captain Hate

I think you're thinking of OL's daughter, Jack.

Narciso79

Ah yes that nazgul wannabe mark felt, unlike say deuce Martinez who was burned by kirikao to Scott Shane among others and consequently yo al queda yes he served a brief interval on prison but not merely enough.

D

I am devastated by the news of Daddy’s passing. His posts were inspiring and joyful filled with interesting information on so many wonderful topics.
Jimmyk, Peter, and JiminNJ, you three were blessed to have spent that time with him, as he celebrated life, and showed so much enthusiasm for living.
MM:
You were also honored by his presence and your family was able to benefit from his wisdom.
Caro, and Jane,
I remember the visit to Jane’s. home in Boston.
Jane:
I am sorry you have lost such a good and close friend.
We all enjoyed his humor and his ability to transform our lives by his loving chronicles of his travels and experiences.
I will pray for his wife and daughters and his beloved dogs.
I miss him already.

In my last email to him, I told daddy he was a gentleman and a scholar, as assuredly he was. Sigh. Last night was hard, and I know on the long drive today I'll be thinking a lot about those he left behind, and Scout, Fry, and Nelson!

Now I remember, it was daddy posting a note from his CalTech daughter who sent the link to a Kurzgesagt video. I can't remember the topic of the video though.

An Indy meet up in memorium of daddy at Shapiro's seems right, doesn't it?
Lots of you can drive. It's not even that bad a drive from ATL, esp. if you gals car pooled it--what fun that could be!

I bet there are Fed Ex employees in Indy who'd love to come toast him, and a life well lived.
Though I guess in a deli, the toast would be with water.

This may need more thought.

TM:
Thank you for providing the opportunity for all of us to get to know daddy.
Momto2 and James:
I am still praying for both of you .

anonamom

Momto2---that's what finally got the tears flowing here---thinking of the girls not having him there for their weddings, and him missing that.

My son's wedding was such a fabulous day. Hard to convey the joy at seeing so much happiness; the 'village' that produced the two young people gathered, celebrating their love, and wishing nothing more than good for them.
I just hate that he didn't get to experience that; to give his counsel to the girls as they chose their life mates.

MissMarple2

anonamom,

Shapiroo's has beer. Also the best corned beef sandwiches outside of New York.

I am willing to help coordinate. Warning, though. May is NOT a good month herre, at least the last half. The 500 Race and attendant festival stuff makes it hard if you want to stay overnight, since hotels are booked up.

One of the reasons we chose Shapiro's is that it is on the edge of downtown and has its own free parking lot, which is a big deal in Indy anymore. The downtown has so many workers that parking is hard to find and expensive.

Captain Hate

Yeah, I could pick you up, maryrose; it's on the way, kind of...

As a refugee-born Muslim migrant to the West, I see Ilhan Omar as a Muslim who went from the dry deserts of Somalia to being (probably) the most ungrateful migrant to the USA. Because of the USA, she lives an honourable life; and she says thanks by constantly attacking US allies.

Good Morning all. Lapsed JOMer here. Henry emailed me this morning and advised me of daddy's untimely death. Death comes to us all, but this is a loss. Without having met the man in person, I can say without hesitation or fear of contradiction that daddy was a good and great man, who didn't realize it. The greatest sympathy for his daughters and wife, may God's grace ease their pain.

D

Omar and AOC are a joke.

did Momma know about the JOM family?

If I may ask: Do any of your mates NOT know about this? How is that possible? As porch's husband notes, it takes me JustTen Hours to read a day's postings, and there are plenty of married people here who do a dang good job of "keeping up."

How could you keep that from anybody under the same roof?

Seriously---how do you do that, if you do that?

anonamom,my hubby knows about JOM,and when I gasped out loud after reading Jane's post last night,he asked what was wrong. I guess I wonder to what extent Momma knew about daddy's wonderful comments and the affection we have for him.

Captain Hate

If my wife hadn't been with me when I met Miss Marple, she wouldn't know about this place. And she met KK when he stopped in the first time we got together.

Frankly I couldn't care less about most of her online friends. It's like eavesdropping on a book she's reading.

maryrose we'll work something out before it happens.

MissMarple2

Almost my whole family knows about JOM. My grandson and youngest sister both met daddy with me at Shapiro's. My son posted here once and occasionally reads us. My daughter knows, because she knows how wonderful you all were to me when my car got totalled.

She was very upset last night because she knew to me it was extremely sad.

Thank you JOM for the comforting words. Daddy can't be replaced, but his legacy will live on. Thank you who met him for sharing your fond memories with those wanted to.

Daddy often told of his time in NC as a child and, of course, his pride in his Tar Heels. By coincidence, the parallels with my time here in NC and Chapel Hill were strong, and I felt that if I hadn't met him, I would soon. What a wonderful gift he used to spark interest and bring his joy of life to all he touched with his person or words.

Today is a big day in the Justin of Canada scandal. His former top advisor will testify to the judiciary committee. Trudeau cancelled a trip yesterday to meet with top advisors to concoct a "message of contrition."
Trudeau held a town hall in Toronto on Monday. His pet project (of course) is climate change. He was heckled at the meeting by people waving signs that said..."the elephant in the room is a cow." I guess that refers to cow farts? Anyway, the hecklers were thrown out of the room.

I wondered about this and I'm glad you brought it up, amom, because you know a lot more about it.
Over the last couple of months I had actually become concerned about his health with his self-description of his drinking and thought about asking him about it, but never said anything.
It just seemed like he was describing something considerably beyond social drinking. It would be doubly tragic if this didn't have to happen.

Buckeye

It just seemed like he was describing something considerably beyond social drinking. It would be doubly tragic if this didn't have to happen.

Iggy, I thought that too. The behavior he was describing sounded like someone who was pushing their binge drinking outside the "normal" envelope.

Since I have been guilty of that, mostly 3-4 decades ago, I kept my mouth shut not wanting to be a hypocrite.

Maybe that was unwise.

Tom R

I’ve been super busy the past couple of weeks so I’ve only checked in sporadically. The bad news about daddy’s passing is horrible. Of all the posters who regularly post here he by far IMO was the funniest. His posts where he posted a lot of images with captions were a sign of his profound sense of humor. Like everyone else here has already said he will be missed.

Prayers to his family for their loss.

Jack is Back!

Well, remember, daddy never drank when he was home in Anchorage, at least that is what I remember.

--"If you’ve only watched the clips and highlights from Donald Trump’s CPAC speech last Saturday, you’re not getting the full picture of the explosive horror show that is the worsening status of the president’s mental health."--

I have to concur that holding the bizarre opinions Mr Trump holds might very well indicate a mental health issue that the government has a compelling interest to intervene in.
Since there are so many challenged people holding similar opinions I think a national program to help them get the treatment they need is in order. There are no doubt thousands of mental health professionals just itching to help the kulaks, er I mean citizens, with intense and round the clock care in modern and well maintained facilities, placed in areas of peace and calm to facilitate their healing, like the North Slope of Alaska for instance. Alcatraz Island also has a large and unused complex.
We could call the agency the National Kommissariat to Vanquish Dementia.

And it doesn’t just make a difference in Alabama and Georgia; it made a difference in Wisconsin, where the best studies that have been done said somewhere between 40 [thousand] and 80,000 people were turned away from the polls because of the color of their skin, because of their age, because of whatever excuse could be made up to stop a fellow American citizen from voting," she said.

The Supreme Court's decision to strike down a key part of the Voting Rights Act did not make "a difference in Wisconsin" or cause voter registration to decline in Georgia, the Post‘s fact checker Salvador Rizzo found.

Has anyone heard from Frau in the past few days? I may have missed her posts, so I am hoping that it is my failing memory rather than anything amiss.

If I haven't said it before, I'll say it again. I have a deep and abiding respect and affection for all of you. It can be a Turkish Bazaar sometimes, or a pinball machine, but the craik is lively and goodwill like a god pub. I'm sure Rob would appreciate that more than any of us.

I have a mind to hie over to Narita and find that pub he loved there and put a photo above the bar. Of course you could write a Baedeker's if you did that with every pub he visited, book in hand.

All of those young barmaids with the poise and grace of seasoned athletes will surely wonder where he's gone.

Tonight I am going to find an appropriate IPA and hoist it in his memory.

I liked Ralph's earlier comment about a compendium of daddy's comments. I was searching for one myself (i think it might have been the near the results of the '12 election)-he was describing a never setting sun as he was flying at altitude in a conversation on an overnight with Danube of Thought. I think it was just putting the news, such as it was at the time, into some perspective. DoT's response was treasure.

I never had the pleasure to meet him in person, but wish I had.

anonamom

Ig--we are family here, right?? Thank you for your 11:00 am post.
Lets not tiptoe around this---you are not the only one who was concerned about his recent reported drinking, nor is his the only person's drinking people are concerned about.

This place is awash in booze and often entertaining booze tales. The cocktail party thing! Heck, we decide which bar to go to based on our feelings about the future of our country each day. And it's fun. Good fellowship.

I enjoy imbibing every bit as much as anybody here, but alcohol is a NEUROTOXIN! Hepatotoxin too. That amount I detailed consuming above, at the lake--that can qualify my son the med student's parents as "highly functioning alcoholics," depending on frequency and impact on relationships, productivity, etc. That is what he learned in his addiction lecture series.

It's been discussed here already, as to who gets to define what. But that is what the addiction docs embrace. And they know more about it than any one of us--except maybe matt.

Why we do Dry September; Dry January after the holidays. Lenten abstinence. A chance to detox, basically (though that doesn't mean that makes up for July and August) and to make sure we CAN stop.

Alcohol has become very "normalized," A-OK in plenty of circles for "MOMMY is Drunk posts" on blogs; Twitter; Instragam. No, really, It's not OK to drink when you are watching children; may have to drive one to the ER. We are seeing highest rates ever of breast cancer and colon cancers in 30-something. Breast cancer incidence directly relates to alcohol consumption.

Trying to not sound like BossyPants here, but simply share information.

Dave (in MA)

Putting site:justoneminute.typepad.com "posted by: daddy" into google search should return all of his posts, but it obviously falls far short of the actual number. The same query returns 5x as many in bing search, but probably also doesn't give the whole picture.

Old Lurker

Unless Daddy's wife and daughters were very aware of his presence here (as are mine), I'm not sure how they might react to seeing the totality of his JOM life.

Just sayin.

rse

If anyone know someone elderly who was lucky enough to travel the world with one or a few trips a year and is now unable to travel, they really do mourn that period of their life when they regularly had new or previously cherished adventures to look forward to.

It's on my mind because my mom has said she would like to travel again and I am the only one attentive enough to handle those logistics. Now just imagine doing that regularly for years on a monthly basis on someone else's dime. That is how I take the comment to jimmy as he left.

Did he ever talk about buying a plane in retirement? Maybe it's because my practical then fiance told me he would buy me an engagement ring when he sold his aztec and it ended up going to alaska to live.

As his former students get closer to their own retirements from the majors that is something I know they talk about when they get together. What they want to own as a retiree to keep flying.

GUS

I've always loved BEER. I've had many a few with Henry, at ballgames, family get togethers and at Henry's house. Never had too many. It's fun to talk about love of beer, and the many flavors.
CAPN is theeee BEST at it. But most of it is not DRUNK talk, it's banter and beer is ok in moderation. I've had pneumonia for the second year in a row, and I haven't had an average of 2 beers a week in 2019. I intend to have a BROOKLYN LAGER this weekend. GOD WILLING.

Captain Hate

Not at all, Cap'n. I was responding to the (stated by some) idea of culling out all his posts and sending them to his family uninvited.

Thought that was obvious but I guess not to you.

jimmyk

The behavior he was describing sounded like someone who was pushing their binge drinking outside the "normal" envelope.

I'm no expert, but he clearly had control over his drinking, to never drink at home or in violation of the constraints of his job. More important, I suspect he engaged in a bit of joking hyperbole. For example, on Sunday when he posted here about being "two sheets to the wind" at the bar with me and Peter, we were on our first beer, or maybe not even. Similar to his comments about Jodi, I suspect.

jimmyk

OL, I think I only mentioned putting together the remembrances posted here the last 18 hours. I'm aware that the travelogues contained some of that same (I suspect) joking banter about drinking and women that I would not just cut and paste and send them to his family.

Dorothy Jane

Hi - I have lurked here for years and occasionally I say something. I had a blog long ago and Daddy very kindly commented on several posts. I loved his posts here at JOM the most. I did not know him, I never met him but I am heartsick today. Giant lump in my throat. It's just so sad. My sympathies go out to everyone here at JOM. And to his family. It's devastating.
