With the Mueller report still hanging fire (And it won't leak itself!) I am picturing the showrunners at MSNBC poring over a new script: "Lie Another Day". Their hero walks into a green room and introduces himself (Or herself!) Or Xiself!) as "Journalist. Legacy Journalist". I don't know the rest because in MY script I change the channel so fast the remote control overheats and explodes in my hand, giving me a whole new set of issue with which to contend and getting me thinking about access to health care and Medicare For All.
Well. Benjamin Wites has the potential to be a bit of dead-ender on this but his first take was reasonable:
We also know that Mueller is not going to indict more people. Though what precisely this means is unclear, it means at a minimum that we should not expect the major collusion indictment that ties together the earlier Russian hacking allegations and social media indictment with conduct by figures in the Trump campaign. It also means that whatever Mueller found on the obstruction prong of the investigation, it’s not resulting in criminal charges either.
The president should wait before popping the champagne corks over this and tweeting in triumph. Yes, in the best-case scenario for the president, Mueller is not proceeding further because he lacks the evidence to do so. But even this possibility contains multitudes: everything from what the president calls “NO COLLUSION!” to evidence that falls just short of adequate to prove criminal conduct to a reasonable jury beyond a reasonable doubt—evidence that could still prove devastating if the conduct at issue becomes public.
He then makes a point that struck me as obvious from Day Zero: DoJ guidelines mean that Mueller was not going to indict the President. That doesn't mean he can't lay out case against him and then explain and then pass it to the House. OTOH, the failure to indict underlings for collusion related conspiracies is telling.
There are other possibilities as well. It’s possible, for example, that Mueller is not proceeding against certain defendants other than the president because he has referred them to other prosecutorial offices; some of these referrals are already public, and it’s reasonable to expect there may be other referrals too. In this iteration, what is ending here is not the investigation, merely the portion of the investigation Mueller chose to retain for himself. It’s possible also that Mueller is finished because he has determined that while the evidence would support a prosecution of the president, he is bound by the Justice Department’s long-standing position that the president is not amenable to criminal process. On the obstruction front, he may well have concluded that, while the president acted to obstruct the investigation, he cannot prove beyond a reasonable doubt that the president’s obstructive acts were not exercises of Trump’s Article II powers. It’s also possible that Mueller has strong prudential reasons for not proceeding with otherwise viable cases.
My gut instinct is that it is some combination of these factors that explains the end of the probe. Without knowing the reasons the investigation is finished, it is impossible to know how to assess its end—and nobody should try.
"Nobody should try". Yeah, and friends don't let friends drink and drive, or speculate on live television. But it happens!
As to referrals, it strikes me as late in the game but maybe.
First!

Woke up on Mountain time. Commercial flight yesterday. Ugh! Rented a new Merc. Pretty spiffy, but totally violates OL’s requirement for knobs. May have to spend the afternoon trying to figure out how to work the damn radio. Sheesh. Always hated that issue of picking up a rental in the dark after a long day and even missing the basics cause the car ‘designers’ are always looking for some new gimmick to make their new spiffy model different. At the trivial end of that spectrum, I remember maybe 30 yrs ago when someone came up with the idea of the little arrow next to the gas pump symbol to tell you which side of the car had the gas cap. That was patented and it was several years before everyone else could put it on the gas gage.

Mueller learned the location of Bigfoot’s lair. But it will be redacted.
Other things we are not likely to see:
Evidence against Trump family members. (Insane people: SDNY will induct them!!!)
Investigations against Dems. (Insane people: Huber will do it!!!)
This changes nothing. Unfortunately.

It's time for a reporter to ask Chief Justice Roberts what does his supervisory role of the FISC mean? And does he intend to exercise it? It's time to ask Govt Operations committees of Congress what changes will they propose to FISA now that we now how easily it was played to violate peoples' Fourth Amendment rights. It's time for Judicial Watch and others to sue the FISC and the members of the FBI and DOJ which filed fake affidavits in support of the FIS warrants.

Last year when I drove to your friend's place in Santa Cruz to get a ride to Los Gatos for the meetup, after we got back I had never driven the rental Mustang in the dark. I'm used to the lights coming on automatically in my Corolla but that doesn't happen in a Fix Or Repair Daily. So I looked for an obvious knob to use and the geniuses working for Frequent Oxidation Rapid Depreciation decided to go another route. I don't know if I started rifling through the owners manual, since it was dark, but I somehow figured it out (it was something counterintuitive that you turned) and won't drive one of those pieces of shit again no matter how "sporty" it looks.

Yesterday was a sunny and warm; 54F. Friday was our first day at or above 50 in the last 139 days. Also the first time I've gotten to fly Athena since early February. It's such a joy to be in the air.
Over the winter I made a motorized tug that attaches to the tailwheel to help move the plane in and out of the hangar. I gave it a 10% chance of actually working, and I was not disabused of my disappointment. Turns out that when I engage the tailwheel I can not steer the plane because I didn't provide for allowing the tailwheel to pivot once it's engaged. No fixing this hardware problem in software.

Hoyden,
My nose wheel tug grabs the axle hub so you can pick up the tug by that pivot point and swing both to steer. With a tiny tail wheel, maybe you can grab the wheel like a miniature power tug the big boys use and then have a pair of little side wheels to turn. Almost like a flattened hand truck.

That video of the Viking Sky Pax ship without power and lurching side to side reminds me of the time Mrs. JiB was on a positioning cruise to Lisbao with her parents. We lost one of the 3 engines due to a fire. Ash all over the fantail which was also the Alfresco dining area.
But with only one engine (usually cruise with two, but losing one, you need a spare for emergency)we ran into some turbulence off the Azores. We were sitting in the lounge, listening to the piano player when all of sudden furniture starting moving about like in the video. The piano was anchored but not the piano bench, because it, with the pianist, came sliding by along with tables and chairs. We hung onto the bar:)
Posted by: Jim Eagle | March 24, 2019 at 09:32 AM
MT, my design is like a 2-wheel wheelbarrow; minus the barrow. The two wheels are driven by chain drive from a winch motor. Ahead of the wheels I have two notches in the frame to engage the tailwheel axle. When I push down on the handle the frame lifts the tailwheel and transfers weight to the drive wheels. That engagement also prevents pivoting/steering.
I do need some kind of swiveling arrangement like you describe and I don't see any way to do that with my design. My hangarmate has a tug for his RV7A built along the way you describe. He uses a motorized handicap scooter drive for the drive wheels and a separate jackscrew motor to lift the nosewheel.
I was trying to make something simpler than that. Mine will move the plane in a straight line. It's also a bit of a hassle to keep down pressure on the handle to keep the tail wheel elevated while towing.

By Rowan Scarborough
ANALYSIS/OPINION:
Special counsel Robert Mueller’s historic decision to end his Russia probe on Friday without filing election conspiracy charges against any Trump associate is vindication for Devin Nunes.
A year ago, Mr. Nunes, a Republican congressman from California farm country cleared President Trump and his advisers in a report by the majority of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence.
Mr. Nunes said the verdict was simple. The committee took testimony from intelligence and law enforcement officials, including Democratic Party loyalists. No one presented evidence that the president’s campaign conspired with Moscow to hack Democratic Party computers or coordinate Russian social media attacks on Hillary Clinton.
On Fox News’ “Ingraham Angle” Friday night, Mr. Nunes said the real scandal is the secret effort by Barack Obama-Clinton operatives to doom Mr. Trump.
“I think what you’re seeing tonight, Laura, is the unraveling of the biggest scandal in American history,” Mr. Nunes said. “People need to remember this actually likely dates back to late 2015, early 2016. [A] Clinton, Obama operation with a bunch of dirty cops at the FBI and career Justice Department officials who are all part of it.”
Before his committee’s February 2018 final report, Mr. Nunes had run up against a concerted liberal campaign to delegitimize his chairmanship.
Mr. Nunes broke off the Russia probe to create a new inquiry: FBI abuse of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA). In the process, he forced Democrats to disclose one of the biggest secrets in election 2016: who funded the Christopher Steele dossier that accused Mr. Trump and associates of various felonies. The answer: the Democratic National Committee and the Clinton campaign.
Conservatives say the Mueller decision now places the dossier in the debunked basket.
The Nunes side probe angered liberals. Andrea Mitchell, an MSNBC news anchor, called him a “clown.” John Heilemann, an MSNBC analyst, said he was an agent of Russian President Vladimir Putin.
A New York Times magazine article said in April 2018 that Mr. Nunes “displayed a deep mistrust of the expert consensus on reality.” Other liberal magazines have also attacked him and his family.
Rep. Adam Schiff, California Democrat, who now heads the committee, accused Mr. Nunes of protecting the president.
Mr. Schiff has re-started the Russian probe and has hired a chief investigator, who, like him, believes in Mr. Steele and the dossier.
Among Mr. Nunes FISA probe findings:
* Democrats funded the Steele dossier as an unverified opposite research paper and spread it around Washington.
* The FBI cited the dossier as evidence to obtain a judge’s surveillance warrant on campaign adviser Carter Page. The application didn’t disclose that it was a Democrat Party indictment of Mr. Trump.
* The FBI presented a Yahoo News story as corroboration. It actually came from dossier creator Steele.
* The FBI fired Mr. Steele for leaking to the press, then continued to use his information via then-associate deputy attorney general Bruce Ohr. Mr. Ohr told the FBI Mr. Steele was “desperate” to sink Mr. Trump.
* Lead FBI agent Peter Strzok and his lover, FBI counsel Lisa Page, exchanged harsh text messages about Mr. Trump and vowed to “stop” him.

"That doesn't mean he can't lay out case against him and then explain and then pass it to the House. OTOH, the failure to indict underlings for collusion related conspiracies is telling."
I thought that this was exactly what the special counsel law prohibits Mueller from doing? So as not to ruin the reputations of people who are not indicted.

Tom B,
I thought it was U.S. Code that the report must redact witness names, unindicted subjects, etc. to protect the innocent (who ended up spending hundreds of thousands of dollars in legal fees). To me, that is the real crime: Prosecutorial strong-arm tactics.
Posted by: Jim Eagle | March 24, 2019 at 09:48 AM
Er, isn't this whole thing once removed from reality? "Collusion" isn't a crime. It's like "climate change," something that sounds ominous but is virtually meaningless. They made it up because they worried that they couldn't prove criminal conspiracy.
Hillary and the DNS colluded with Perkins Coie, who colluded with GPS Fusion, who colluded with Steele, who colluded with Russians. In fact, those were probably campaign finance crimes at the least.
The FBI apparently colluded with Australians, Brits, Maltese and Italians, at the least, in order to interfere with a U.S. election. Those were probably criminal acts as well.
However, even if "The Russians" had given Jr. compromising info on Hillary, what statute is Wites citing for potential prosecution? He doesn't say at the link.

--As to referrals, it strikes me as late in the game but maybe.--
Any referral would presumably have to be someone who is not connected to Trump or his campaign since investigating Trump etc is precisely why Mueller was appointed to begin with.
If he referred someone not connected to Trump it will have little to no political impact.

My question about the special counsel law was to get some idea of how damaging the law will allow Barr's report to congress to be. Not a lawyer, so I may not be looking at the right special counsel law.
Would laws about grand jury secrecy apply to the SC? And if so, would that mean Mueller and Barr would be prohibited from disclosing anything about the investigation of Trump and family because they were not indicted?

Bill Wells was the guy that told the California State and local party that they needed to support his candidacy for Dumb Duncan Hunter's congressional seat during the primary. His idea was to make sure that under California's ridiculous top-two primary system the voters would have a choice of two Republicans for ths general election.
The GOPe gave him the middle finger, let Dumb Duncan win the primary with a raging towelhead terrorist in the second slot. As the General closed in Session's DOJ indicted Dumb Duncan using evidence they had gathered well before the primary.
Criminal Dumbcan barely won the squeaker against Crapsinajar. I hope Wells is drawing a line between the Christians of east county San Diego and the members of The Religion of Being Blown to Pieces.

Making Mueller obey the law is obstruction, just ask Schiff, Nadler, Schumer et al
Speaking of obstruction, one rationale for Trump not declassifying the FISA applications was that it could be considered obstruction of the Mueller probe. I think I read that in a court decision about it, though my memory or comprehension may be faulty on that point.
The investigation is over now.
Somebody linked a couple of tweets by Papadopolous in the prior thread where he said he couldn't wait until Monday -- because he is free to start talking.
Now that Mueller has finally closed up shop, maybe this week is when all that stuff will finally be made public.

A couple things we can be sure of about The Report. Regardless of the law, that which can be used against Trump will be leaked and so used. That which can be used to crush the conspiracy will remain hidden at all costs.
All because the republicans are the stupid party that won’t playit like the democrats will.
The dems will concoct a new way to attack. It’s what they are.

First of all, condolences peter.
Now that Mueller has finally closed up shop, maybe this week is when all that stuff will finally be made public.
One of the reasons I pay attention to JackStraw is that he has consistently stated how the truth of how the federal government has been subverted into being part of an international cabal pitted against the citizenry will rock the foundation of what people believe. And part of what I mean by that is the naive concept that just voting Republican will change that; the Bush Crime Family is complicit in all of this which is why they were so chummy with the Clintons. This will be bigger than anything ever before in this country's history.

Maybe it won't, AB, but the chance that it will is 100% because we have an outsider President.

But an outsider who’s been forced to surround himself with swamp creatures.

Tom, Mueller blew right past recusal laws guidelines if you look at his staff choices. Why would he obey any other laws?
Believe it or not, even though I've complained about Mueller going over and beyond his original mandate, I think Rosenstein has ridden herd on him and his minions regarding going after DJT.

Captain Hate,
I was just discussing this with my daughter this morning. I was explaining why I pay attention to all of this stuff and why we can no longer trust either party. (I was explaining to her the UK involvement in the Russian hoax.)
She said that because she is prone to anxiety (she is) that she can't pay too much attention. I told her that she didn't have to pay attention except when I told her something she absolutely had to know.
She is still trying to understand why our streets are crumbling. I told her that there is probably a contract with a crony supplying inferior asphalt allowing them to make a big profit in exchange for political donations. She just stared at me. LOL!

I'm used to the lights coming on automatically in my Corolla but that doesn't happen in a Fix Or Repair Daily.
Sure it does... both my 14 Escape and my 19 Edge have it and the Edge also has auto bright/dim tech that switches the lights to high beams if it does not detect an oncoming car and back again if it does.
It also has rain sensitivity which causes the wipers to automatically swipe if the windshield has enough rain on it. Just remember to turn that one off in the car wash!!!

Another Bob,
Do you really think President Trump has been FORCED to surround himself with swamp creatures?
Posted by: MissMarple2 | March 24, 2019 at 10:53 AM
Progs. Too crazy for words:
It's not bad enough that some of the crazy rich plan on fleeing the planet to escape a climate catastrophe that doesn't exist.
Worse, SJW progs are upset that the poor and huddled masses won't be able to join them.
I've noted this before, but with this story we're getting perilously [or delightfully, depending on your POV] close to the prophetic novella The Marching Morons, wherein the productive of the world are swamped by the demands of the idle imbeciles and who then devise a plan to offer the morons free interplanetary vacations which in reality are box car rocket ships destined for the sun.
All aboard!

GUS & Jane,
According to Capt. Eric, a little alcohol is fine. A small bottle of vodka, mini-wines, a six pack of beer, etc. I don't drink beer and may imbibe in a small wine but I will leave it to your discretion how much to bring.

Didn't happen in a Mustang rental, Steph.

You assume it’ll all come out CH. I’m not making that assumption.
I think a lot of it has already come out. The problem is that none of it really resonates or gets covered by the MSM. The only way that wall will change is if there are actual consequences, like criminal trials and prison sentences, for the perpetrators. And not just a few minor scapegoats, but people high up the food chain like Brennan, McCabe, Comey, and ideally Hillary and Obama. But even mid-level people like Strzok getting charged will get people's attention. Unless that happens it will all be swept under the rug.

Nadler: It would be ‘cover-up’ for Barr to withhold Mueller report
I'm looking forward to Barr testifying at Nadler's committee.
Posted by: Extraneus | March 24, 2019 at 10:59 AM
On cue, Nadler claiming following established process equals obstruction.

--It also has rain sensitivity which causes the wipers to automatically swipe if the windshield has enough rain on it.--
May I respectfully suggest that anyone who is so inattentive or feeble minded as to not know when to turn their wipers on might not be roadworthy. :)
And, while I'm a Mopar muscle car guy, I've owned at least seven Ford pickups and every one was a darned reliable workhorse. [And the last four had automatic headlights. :)]

Barr cannot release secret grand jury testimony by law to leaking pieces of shit like Nadler.

This has a video clip of Rep. Ratcliffe of Texas on Mornings with Maria. Worth listening to.

Fat Jerry probably doesn't understand the SC law and the Rosenstein memo to Grassley. I sure hope he shows his idiocy, and demand disclosure of witnesses identity, as well as the identity of the unindicted. We know Doug Collins, Jim Jordan, John Ratcliffe, and Matt Gaetz won't let Jerry get away with slandering the unindicted or the witnesses.
It could be a real show.

PIVOT ALERT: Jennifer Granholm on CNN: maybe the Russia report coming back a dud will be good for Democratic candidates. They'll be able to discuss issues that "matter to real people." Lol.

Posted by: Another Bob | March 24, 2019 at 10:43 AM
I'm leaning towards optimism. Maybe not all, but enough will come out. So much of it is already out. What we're actually waiting for is the smoking gun, the documentary evidence that will put people in jail for the stuff we already know about.
I've thought all along that Trump was allowing stuff to come out gradually so when some liberal hero of the moment gets marched off in hand cuffs, there won't be rioting in the streets. So I think public opinion is leaning his way after having been prepped for two years.
As CH says, this will be bigger than anything in history. The revelations will be explosive. Which means there will be intense pressure to keep all it under wraps, as AB fears. I'm not sure it will be possible to keep it all under wraps.

True, but when the sprinkles/mist/rain is varying in the rate of coming down as you drive, you don't have to futz with the little dial thingy to adjust the intermittent wipers every 30 seconds, either. Used to drive me nutz...

We HAVE learned a few things from the Mueller witch hunt...
Hillary failed again.
Obama failed again.
Democrats failed again.

McCabe, Comey, Strzok, LPage et al. are all the errand boys sent by grocery clerks.
MM, “forced” in the sense that swamp people would be the only ones who could get confirmed, yes. Barr? Haspel? Coats? All swamp.
