Some thoughts on the ag crisis--- ashed from last thread:
"The corn crop ain’t coming in this year folks. What has been planted has been wiped out by a late frost and it is nearly too late to get a second planting in."

It's generally not a good sitch for prairie farmers overall.

There is the cash crunch of lower production yields due to weather adversity against the cost of financing any crop production.

Friend with leading ag credit bank says we could see a shake out of more smaller farms.

Larger producers with meatier balance sheets and greater diversification should be able to "weather" the crisis.

Flooding and slow ground thaw-to-warming is gonna hurt. However---

Planting in the southernmost Plains states and much of the midwestern corn belt is *usually* a mid-April to mid-May affair.

But winter wheat losses due to flooding might be another matter. That crop goes in the ground during fall. Specialty breads already in the $5-7 price range are likely to go higher. Who's gonna pay for that kind of increase----especially with the gluten-free and reduced carb dieting? We'll see.

Weather patterns to date haven't been conducive to "early" corn planting.

With today's super seed varieties, "knee-high by the 4th of July" is an easier mark to hit than during days of yore.

There will be an adverse weather effect. We'll see how the market factors it in and for how long.

Shorter freezing period higher soil moisture in flood region is a boon for soil pests (freezing ground reduces larvae survival rates), fungi, and molds. Higher production costs and possible lower yields. We'll see.

Any impending shortages will affect food prices across the board. Commodity prices.... yo! Goin long on feed grains.

Crop disasters have long-lasting effects. On food supplies and supermarket prices. No news there.

Think about price pressure on pork and chikken due to spiking beef prices--- the other white meat and yard bird will go up too. Both are corn eatin machines too.

Fresh-product prices will go higher but look for frozen and specialty packaged commodities to be even higher as sourcing competition stiffens.

Reduced demand by consumers for high-fructose corn syrup sweetened products (think soda and canned stuff) *might* temper major producer price pressures.

In the non-food area, what happens to the price of ethanol laced petrol? Not good news there. We'll see.

Our monthly food tab from grocer is $580 per month. We're anticipating a further price surge of about 18% in 2019, making the 2018-19 inflationary trend a net of about 27% here in the East bay.

Specialty farmers market prices are out of control. Friends who are "eating healthy" (households of two adults) are blowing through about $2K per month on their home meals and dining/snacking out. Doesn't count the wine/booze bill each month. BIL/SIL are burning $500 per month on their fav wines.

Local news stories here about border closing harp on a net loss of $600 billion in trade with Metziko.

really. it's being reported as if that loss will be incurred within hours of the border closing.

the other big deal according to the news will be the stoppage of day labor flow across the footbridge from Metziko into the US.

wondering how the new trade deal with Metziko impacts US receipts compared to a NAFTA deal would.

is the threat of border closing enough to shake up the Metzikin gummint? between export crunch and money laundering pinch there will be mucho presh on those fools to get with the Trump program about the border. sealing their own southern border would be a good first step.

hard for me to imagine POTUS would wreck the US economy intentionally by closing off $600 billion in trade.

I was on the other end of those exchanges, issuing cautions, and warning that the Act was like a compendium of law enforcement wish lists that had been gathering dust in drawers all over the country, that the limited use restrictions would evaporate, that the definition of terrorism would expand exponentially, in short that it was an invitation to abuse. I also warned that tasking law enforcement with preventing crimes, rather than catching and trying criminals was a categorical mission change with monumental implications. Good jumble, Dave. And yes!

Jane said something yesterday about wanting another non politician to run in 2024 that has been in the back of my mind for a while. DJT is the first non pol President since Eisenhower and, when you consider all the politicking it takes to be a general, Coolidge is probably a better touchstone. Both wings of the Uniparty consider this heresy and the MFM has historically done its part by blaming the Depression on Silent Cal while lionizing Saint Delano whose daft "remedies" prolonged the pain and the severity of the suffering. Trump was in a unique position of having had huge media exposure in addition to being a business executive; and executive is the key qualifier for citizen government because not everybody is qualified to head up the executive branch as former Senators regularly prove. Trump is certainly smart enough to appreciate succession planning and I'd be surprised if, assuming re-election in 2020, he doesn't start grooming someone from within his administration, maybe an outsider brought in specifically for that.

Dave (in MA)

If you like the whole Mitch Rapp sort of thing, there are other similar characters by other authors you might want to check out.

Scot Harvath [Brad Thor]
Pike Logan [Brad Taylor]
Kolt Raynor [Dalton Fury]
Nathan McBride [Andrew Peterson]
Harry Nichols [Stephen England]
Daniel Petrovich [Steven Konkoly]
Dewey Andreas [Ben Coes]
Brady Hawk [R.J. Patterson]

I kind of steered away from Thor's works since he went FULL KRISTOL during the '16 campaign.

Also, the book Terror Red by Fox News' Col. Hunt was pretty enjoyable. He's also got a new series that started in '17 that I haven't gotten to yet.

Narciso probably has a bunch of other recommendations.

Narciso79

Yes court gentry (mark greaney) who they conjured up an origin story four in, micah dalton (David stone, who is really caraten stroud) although might want to skip the first one. I've seen excerpts of englund which seem impressive.
