It's Easter Weekend so let me take a break from my customary media-bashing and instead segue to Easter-related media-bashing.

Kathleen Parker still wears the crown for this "Christ has died, Christ has... hmm, my latte is cold" moment, from back in the days when Ted Cruz was hoping to win Iowa (he did!):

One observation. I don’t know… this seems to have slipped through the cracks a little bit but Ted Cruz said something that I found rather astonishing. He said, you know, “It’s time for the body of Christ to rise up and support me.” I don’t know anyone who takes their religion seriously who would think that Jesus should rise from the grave and resurrect himself to serve Ted Cruz. I know so many people who were offended by that comment.

Ms. Parker later went with a "JK!" defense. Yeahk yeah - they laughed when she said she was going to try her hand at television comedy, but they're not laughing now.

That pleasant flashback was inspired by recent Times coverage of the disaster at Notre Dame, here mocked by Alex Griswold of the Free Beacon:

So when you're planning to announce a high-level appointment, you speak to the person ahead of time, offer them the job, get their acceptance and buy-in, agree on salary and expectations, etc. What is the probability that Mueller didn't know he'd be SC the day before he was appointed, the day he "interviewed" for the FBI Director job?

Right around zero. This is probably why people imagine that Trump and Rosenstein were strategizing with Mueller about the investigation. Now that we see the report, I think the idea that Rosenstein is a good guy is in tatters. Of all the people who have to answer for this embarrassment, he's the man most responsible.

I will look for an archive of the Triduum services next week. Usually there is one, with the caveat that the Campus Ministry web site is under continuous tinkering by students, so it will be in a different place than last year.

I’m kind of surprised that the Good Friday Liturgies that you’ve been to haven’t had Communion. Every place I’ve been for the last 40-some years has had communion as part of the Liturgy. Maybe you were at stations— the GF Liturgy is the only place you get the Passion from St John, as the Palm Sunday Passion rotates through the Synoptics. There was one Good Friday where the parish we were at was doing the first Triduum since establishing perpetual adoration, and so the reserved sacrament was, for the first time, in the adoration chapel. Our deacon, it turned out, didn’t know this. The procession headed out and disappeared, and then the deacon appeared briefly, frantic, on the other side of the glass front doors of the church. The congregation was oblivious because this was all going on behind them, but the choir was up in the sanctuary at that church and we saw all. We held it together, but we had a good laugh later. (They have taken the Lord’s body! We don’t know where it is!)

If you are Catholic and don’t go to the Triduum liturgies, you are really missing out. Here at Notre Dame we will get in line about 2:30 to get a seat in a pew for the Easter Vigil. (Doors open at 7:30, mass starts at 9:00, finishes about midnight.) This is our 7th year, and, yes, it’s like camping out for Stones tickets!

I’m sitting in the Basilica right now listening to the choir practice for tonight. They are going to pronounce St Francis Xavier correctly tonight during the Litany of the Saints. :-)
