Notre Dame burns.
On the life/lemonade spectrum, no one was hurt and this will give France, and much of the world, an opportunity to unite for a worthy cause. I don't know how much expertise the US can contribute but we will surely pitch in.
Furthermore:
A French firefighter official told reporters the main structure of the cathedral has been saved and the two iconic main towers are intact and have been saved as well.
Here's hoping this was just a dreadful construction accident and not terrorist-inspired. There does seem to be a slight possibility that some wave of attacks on Catholic churches in France has been underway, although evidence free speculation is inappropriate.
http://www.thedoublenegative.co.uk/2017/10/anxiety-as-captured-in-concrete-a-new-cathedral-1960-reviewed/
I certainly hope the old Notre Dame can be restored. I cannot imagine the French would want to see one of these monstrosities.

MM,
I'm thinking of engineered wood or concrete to replace the ND over-structure.
I'm addicted to "This Old House" and they use a lot of engineered wood to accomplish things you couldn't do years ago.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Engineered_wood
They can create wood beams with laminates that are as strong as steel.
Posted by: jim nj | April 17, 2019 at 07:08 AM
I wonder, in general, do they give any financial counseling to these students and their co-signer parents? Here's the cost of the degree, average starting salary for graduates in that field, chances of landing a job in that field - and then show the resulting cost/benefit analysis?
Of course not! If they did that, and did it honestly and clearly, The whole system would collapse and all those Grievance Studies programs would have to shut down, and all the Diversity Compliance bureaucrats would have to be fired. And obviously we can’t have that.
Posted by: James D. | April 17, 2019 at 07:10 AM
jim nj,
How interesting. I had never thought about using engineered wood (or laminates, as they are often called).
I am used to thinking of them as inferior in quality because I worked in high-end furniture sales for a number of years and one of the key selling points was that the pieces were "real wood" with no laminates. (Snobbery exists in furniture design, too.)

That is the defensive mechanism (like a child who cries at the slightest parental correction) they use to avoid accountability and to protect their jobs and their money.

Miss Marple's 7:38 link is a good summary of the limitations of science to explain everything in the complexities of life and things in the universe. Not everything is reduceable to an if A then B formulation, particularly when dealing with really large numbers, and that journalists, some of the dumbest people on the planet, assign such omnipotence to very fallible people if not outright frauds is laughably misleading. Darwin built a hypothesis on extensive observations which has served as a good step to understanding how life as we know it came to pass. It will never explain everything.

Bubarooni, he sounds like great kid who will be very successful. Think of debt as a huge motivation - and then the fun begins. Never in my life have I resented people who had more than I have, or didn’t have to work as hard. There is nothing wrong about working hard and it leads to success.
Also it costs me a third if what it costs in MA to live in FL. Granted in MA I had a 3000 sq foot condo and down here I live in a1500 sq foot manufactured home. And nothing about that bothers me - just don’t tell my mother. I certainly can live on my retirement.

No one does a good job on the student debt and I am endlessly surprised at how many UMC, fine houses and vacations, let their kids go to expensive private colleges and then let kids take on debt to do it.
One of the diva's friends was essentially proselytizing taking on student debt as "no big deal" as long as you have a business degree. One of the other parents in that circle of friends complained to me that her daughter was buying into that same attitude.
When the college called freshman year trying to get a donation, I told them that they say they are fundraising to increase financial aid. They increase tuition annually to increase financial aid. They make a big deal abot all the first gen college students and illegal aliens not paying tuition to add to 'diversity'. We already feel like we were asked to pay a gross amount that included someone else's kid we don't know all because we had home equity.
It's not just the absurd gross amount each year. It's being told to take out a second mortgage or parent plus loan to do that. It's crazy.

Re: student loans I agree that colleges need to have skin in the game and the gov needs to be removed. The problem has been exacerbated by allowing students to include living expenses in their loans. This easily doubles the debt burden for many students.
Take a walk through downtown Madison and count the number of “Taj Mahal” student housing that have been erected. They get $1,000/mo easily for a studio, $800/mo for 1/3 interest in a multi bedroom unit.
A degree has some defined ROI, living expenses not so much.

My kids know they were fortunate, but we did teach them about managing money early on.
Jr. got his undergrad paid for.
Buckeyette had a scholarship that paid about half the tuition, and I had the cash flow to pay the rest.
Jr. took on debt while in med school, but had income associated with a research fellowship he had simultaneously, so his debt was less than typical.
He is about as frugal as they come, so has managed to retire the med school debt in a couple of years.
Easier in his case because of his relatively high income.
I am thankful they don't have the debt burden hanging around their shoulders.

Tens of millions of potential members of the class, incredibly deep pocketed defendants, and an argument that could well sway a jury ("Brain research proves that reasoning skills are still maturing well into the 20's, and these huge lenders pressured vulnerable, immature, unprepared teens to sign on to hundreds of thousands of dollars of debt when we know they're not even mature enough to choose to drink a can of beer!")

Strategy Page has a pretty good Libya 'splainer. Sounds to me like the UN devised gov't is basically a failure, with no control over warring militias, while "strongman" Khalifa Haftar may well represent Libya's best hope for coherent governance at the moment.

I think this may have already been posted but just in case it wasn’t:

It seems odd to me that a Catholic university like Notre Dame would hire an openly avowed Marxist which is an ideology that by default promotes atheism.
Also, since it appears Buttplug has adopted his father’s ideology, is it safe to assume he is just claiming to be a Christian like Obama and other pro-Marxist Democrats have done just to improve his chances of getting elected?

It looks like they've kept the superdelegates but have limited their votes until the second round, i.e., a contested convention.

I tend to agree with Miss Marple, James D - bringing her in late would make available the savior narrative. Not sure how the BernieBros would take that news two cycles in a row... 🍿

I absolutely cannot bear the thought of Mooch even in the campaign, but I think that is what they have planned.

Pompeo says detente with the Cuban regime has failed, and "cozying up to Cuban dictators will always be a black mark" on the Administration record, so Administration will no longer suspend Title III of the Libertad Act allowing legal action against seized property in Cuba.

Why is that odd? The Catholic Church elected an openly avowed Marxist as Pope, didn't they?

I am fully aware of the history of the Frankfurt School. I first learned of it in the mid 80s in a PoliSci class from a professor who taught the history of Communism without trying to brainwash anyone on how great it was.
My point was focused on the oddity of a Christian university allowing someone who promoted an ideology whose tenets advocate the destruction of Christianity to teach there.
