Just back from the Vet. Since Lady was drinking bowl after bowl of water, then leaving huge puddles, I took her in yesterday for a blood test to see if there was an infection. Well, the Vet called with both bad and good news.

She is in Renal failure but they can correct her kidney functions. Have to take her in 3 days in a row for an IV of Subcutaneous Fluid under her skin, 200ML each day. She was also given special dry and wet food for Renal support, and some Aluminum Hydroxide liquid to mix in her food.

We have no idea how she started kidney failure. But her prognosis is good but an expense I wish I didn't have.

Anonamom, I know how the billings and payments never intersect perfectly, but I had 3 days in HSS plus all the precautions against an infection in-the-bone versus on-the-bone. My point was that with my Florida Blue PPO, my share was a lot less than I expected it to be.

Stephanie Nene Not Your Normal Granma

Recently a routine police patrol parked outside a bar in Mosheim, Tennessee. After last call the officer noticed a man leaving the bar so intoxicated that he could barely walk.
The man stumbled around the parking lot for a few minutes, with the officer quietly observing.

After what seemed an eternity in which he tried his keys on five different vehicles, the man managed to find his truck and trailer and fall into it. He sat there for a few minutes as a number of other patrons left the bar and drove off.

Finally, he got into the car and started the engine, switched the wipers on and off - it was a fine, dry summer night, flicked the blinkers on and off a couple of times, honked the horn and then switched on the lights. He moved the vehicle forward a few inches, reversed a little and then remained still for a few more minutes as some more of the other patrons' vehicles left. At last, when his was the only car left in the parking lot, he pulled out and drove slowly down the road.

The police officer, having waited patiently all this time, now started up his patrol car, put on the flashing lights, promptly pulled the man over and administered a breathalyzer test. To his amazement, the breathalyzer indicated no evidence that the man had consumed any alcohol at all! Dumbfounded, the officer said, 'I'll have to ask you to accompany me to the police station. This breathalyzer equipment must be broken.'

'I seriously doubt it', said the truly proud Hillbilly. 'Tonight I'm the designated decoy.'

But he and my Mother taught me how to make the world's best mint juleps, and how to NEVER try to drink one not in an appropriate silver cup.

OL, we lived in Louisville in the 1970s and my parents did have silver julep cups but they also served juleps in pewter Jefferson cups like this one:
https://www.replacements.com/p/keller--george-misc-pewter-hollowware-jefferson-cup/kgomiph/63010071

Just to tie in the UVA>julep thing. :)

My younger brother is actually named after Thomas Jefferson.

I make juleps by steeping mint leaves in hot water and then using the resulting "tea" to make simple syrup. Crushed ice, mint syrup, Maker's Mark, and a mint sprig to finish. I'm finally growing mint this year and I should have just enough.

JiB, I'm glad you didn't pay much out of pocket, but my point is that bill had almost nothing to do with what the hospital accepted as "payment in full" from Medicare or your carrier, which I am certain was NOWHERE near the 63 K you saw---and that the real cost, with some profit too, is 15 K if you have an uncomplicated course.
So maybe 20 K with your additional two days.

That 63 K is the funny number they come up with to get the 20K (or whatever it is) they need to meet their costs after giving the "discounts" to the insurers and accepting whatever Medicare deems appropriate.

When I had hernia surgery a couple years ago, the number was something like $35K. And evidently when my insurance didn't pay what the doctor was expecting, or there was some glitch, they sent me the bill for $35K. I knew it was BS, but it still shook me up, and pissed me off. I called them up and gave them a piece of my mind, and they said that sending me the bill was a 'bureaucratic error,' or some such.

The ONLY reason for those phony rack rates for medical services is to scare the bejesus out of regular people so they will accept any port in the storm offered by the State.

Docs have no idea that their own esteem among their patients is damaged by those ludicrous sticker prices, the dozen flunkies in the office to manage the phony paper and jump through this hoopp next procedures, and the stinking suspicion that the Doctor and The Man are in it together to overcharge the patients.

An interesting snip: “The city already spends $77,000 per homeless person (the money going to activists and nonprofits), which is higher than the mean average income of the average U.S. resident, wrote Rich Cibotti, in a data-filled 2017 piece for the Daily Wire. It has a $10 billion city budget (in stark contrast to the $3 billion city budgets of much larger cities such as San Diego and San Jose) and doles out $600 million among homeless agencies and non-profits to pay for ‘homeless services,’ which is an amount that is higher than its police or fire budgets.”

We have to DEAL with it. We HATE dealing with it. (And yes, to get that $18 Medicare pays us to cover a cataract procedure, we do bill $325 for the half hour of care we provide.) Trouble for your side is non docs don't see what you and your husband live with. You guys go to work every day and just try to help people. But the guy in the street just remembers all those doctors in white coats in the Rose Garden cheering Obama on.

The other trouble is, as you know because we've compared notes, the new crop of doctors is not like your generation, and many of them do think the government is just trying to help everybody get what they are entitled to. And that same government owns their student loans. And that same government funds their residencies and controls the numbers allowed into the specialties. And the same government is trying to save the planet from AGW.

My Mother met us there and drove us around so Mrs. OL could see her hood, taking us eventually to her neighbor's farm so YL could see some horses up close. Mom was known there and waved in and we got out and walked through the barn. Horse heads sticking out of the stalls to see who we were and if we had treats for them. YL was allowed to pet them.
