The NY Times looks at the crisis on the southern border and yes, they seem to acknowledge it IS a crisis:
The U.S. Immigration System May Have Reached a Breaking Point
For years, there have been warnings that America’s immigration system was going to fail. That time may be now.
Too big to fail? Evidently not. They note that comparisons with the higher illegal entry numbers of decades past is irrelevant, which will come as news to a lot of lefty talking heads:
Gone are the days when young, strong men waited on the Tijuana River levees for their chance to wade across the water, evade capture and find work for the summer. These days, thousands of people a day simply walk up to the border and surrender. Most of them are from Central America, seeking to escape from gang violence, sexual abuse, death threats and persistent poverty. The smugglers have told them they will be quickly released, as long as they bring a child, and that they will be allowed to remain in the United States for years while they pursue their asylum cases.
The very nature of immigration to America changed after 2014, when families first began showing up in large numbers. The resulting crisis has overwhelmed a system unable to detain, care for and quickly decide the fate of tens of thousands of people who claim to be fleeing for their lives. For years, both political parties have tried — and failed — to overhaul the nation’s immigration laws, mindful that someday the government would reach a breaking point.
That moment has arrived. The country is now unable to provide either the necessary humanitarian relief for desperate migrants or even basic controls on the number and nature of who is entering the United States.
Trump draws unfriendly fire as they note a paradox - his 'border closing soon' rhetoric contributed to the current 'beat the wall' stampede:
Yet, perversely, the president’s own anti-immigrant rhetoric has helped supercharge the pipeline of migrants from Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador. Smugglers lately have been buying radio ads in Central America, warning that Mr. Trump is about to shut down all immigration. If you ever want to go to the United States, they say, go now!
However, a surprise!
Experts say the president is not wrong when he says that “legal loopholes” in America’s immigration system are partly responsible for encouraging migrants to bring children like Jeremias on a dangerous journey that in some cases ends in tragedy.
"Not wrong"? I guess their keyboards ignited when they tried to type "Trump is right".
The Times even delves into the basis for an asylum claim, which involves persecution, not poverty. However, they take a pass on noting the role played by America's War on Drugs, which will turn the Big 5-0 on June 18, 2021. Instead, there is this:
There is another problem with the wall: Slowing the exodus of migrants from Central America would need to start in those countries first.
Central America’s economies are still weak, and residents face drug and gang violence at levels largely unseen in other countries. Many are subject to deep poverty, a situation that recently reached a crisis with the collapse of coffee, corn and maize crops.
OK, the violence has been raging for many years. The collapse in commodity prices may be the precipitating event.
Obama's Dream talk followed by Trump's rhetoric surely contributed. So where does the Times take this?
American diplomats say the best way to confront that kind of lawlessness is with the hundreds of millions of dollars in foreign aid that has been flowing to Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras for several years, designed to bolster the rule of law and improve the economy.
The State Department wants a bigger foreign aid budget. Yes, that might help but it is hardly 'outside the checkbook' thinking.
Thanks, Marlene.

I have been a correspondant and friend with virtually everyone who comes here. You are all awesome people.
TOM R. came here and behaved rudely to people I care about. His "WHY DON'T YOU EDUCATE YOURSELF HORSESHIT" is NEVER going to fly with me. He is a rude self absorbed ass-hole. HIS CHOICE.
A year ago, TOM R. was crying his pathetic eyeballs out at Memorial Day. We exchanged a few posts about our families sacrifices for America. Tom R, was rude as usual. I pointed out the extensive sacrifice that members of my family had made for America and even Britain. Tom R decided to tell me to (and I quote) "FUCK YOURSELF".
He did so twice. THEN, Tom R, rude person, decided that I was a "dick', and he got to decide who is a "dick", even after telling that person to "FUCK YOURSELF" twice. He has continued to be rude to people I care about. Yesterday, he was RUDE to Henry. Henry is a REAL LIFE friend of mine, and Tom R gets NO free pass from me. You see, I'm still sore from FUCKING MYSELF. I could go on and on about TOM R whining like a little girl to to others asking why they don't tell me off. Telling me "he's glad I'm not dead", crosses a line, that I will not abide.
Tom R. wants to play tough guy. He's not tough, he's a whining cut and paste artist who is almost always rude. And I'm not dead.

Masters: first tee time is 9:05AM, Eddie Pepperel goes off with a marker.
Last tee time is 2:45 when Molinari and Day go off. The first six on the leaderboard are all major winners.

Why should Radical Left Democrats in Congress have a right to retry and examine the $35,000,000 (two years in the making) No Collusion Mueller Report, when the crime committed was by Crooked Hillary, the DNC and Dirty Cops? Attorney General Barr will make the decision!

I detect a subtle strategy to split the Obama faction from the Hillary faction. I think this will be quite entertaining.

The Masters and British Open have always been my favorites. I've had the pleasure to play Augusta back in the 20th century, and I've played several of the British Open courses over the years, CARNOUSTIE being my favorite. Closely followed by the OLD COURSE at ST ANDREWS.

It looks like the next wave of storms won't hit Augusta until tomorrow afternoon. I hate that it may happen that way, but buy some extra pimiento cheese just in case it's a Monday finish. ⛳️

You played ANGC with your grandfather and a celebrity, if I remember that correctly, GUS. And fired a damned fine score, too.

MM, Sorry about your B_I_L. It's tough whenever it happens.
Mom-to2: hope the surgery goes well - and I want to share in Capt Hate's praise. I'd like to take lessons from you on handling loss. (Actually I'd rather not have loss but that seems unavoidable)
Had cocktails last night with Mr & Mrs Marlene and it was great to see them. I'm such a hermit but I have to see more of them next year.
The season here is ending. For some reason the permanent residents (me) love it when the season ends. But there are some people I'll really miss.

For what it's worth Jane and Jack. I am feeling very quite well, and I am thinking about rescheduling my Florida trip very soon. I really REALLY look forward to seeing both of you, if we can.
I'll be in touch.

Beasts my apology. It was Henry Fonda.
Posted by: GUS | April 13, 2019 at 09:06 AM
Buckeye,
I've always been a hermit. Partially because I'm not married (and during certain ages everyone was) and partially because I've been a news junkie since college.
But I kind of like it. I do have cocktail hour here every night and see my friend then, and I go to the pool. Other than that Kiwi and I do our own thing!

Checked. Yes, a V on the award citation, during the Tet Offensive. (You know, the battle we won but the media had most people convinced that we lost.)

Beasts, Alan Pakula was the member who hosted us.
Posted by: GUS | April 13, 2019 at 09:17 AM
MM,
If your sister is writing the obit, make sure she has his DD-214 form which is a summary of his service and will list all his awards. Being a jarhead in VN means he has earned at least 3 more ribbons. Bronze Medal with V, means combat action. Plus he will have a unit award, overseas and VN service award among others. If she needs help interpreting the 214, have her go to the nearest VFW, American Legion or DAV post.

Wow. Alan Pakula was your host? I will never forget how he died. He was on his way to his home in East Hampton driving on the LIE when a truck in front hit something and a pipe it was carrying slammed into Pakula's car killing him instantly. A very freakish accident.

In my inbox this morning:
“And the three men I admire most: the father, son and the holy ghost, they caught the last train for the coast, the day the music died.”
Don McClean/American Pie
Did the music just die in America with the recent arrest of Wikipedia founder, Julian Assange?
I believe so.
We can’t possibly cover the depth of this event in an email.
So, we’re going to cover a few points and illustrate the significance of the danger that’s been loosed on the world.
One thing you can bank on is that the world is one step closer to war as a result:
1) Assange is NOT an American citizen.
2) He was extradited from the Ecuadorian Embassy in London for the purpose of being brought back to the United States.
3) The USA will no doubt want to put him on trial for ensuring Hillary lost the White House.
4) The British police say they were invited in the Ecuadorian embassy where he has been holed up since 2012.
5) The rumblings behind the curtain are that the Democrats are behind this, hoping to force him to say he got Hillary’s emails from Putin.
This whole mess doesn’t pass the smell test. In fact, it stinks…Royally.
This battle is just getting started.
Keep in mind, those who are after Assange are the same people after you and me.
More so, the arrest of Julian Assange is meant to send a message to all Americans and journalists: be quiet, behave, toe the line. Or you will pay the price.
Journalists saying the “British police were invited in The Ecuadorian embassy” forgot to mention the part where the US made the recent Ecuadorean IMF loan ($4.2 Billion) contingent on Assange’s asylum being dropped.
Hmmm!
Posted by: Buckeye | April 13, 2019 at 09:41 AM
Don't know if I agree this means we are closer to war, but otherwise seems a reasonable synopsis.

I'm so glad that the LAWYER/CLIENT privilege that RODHAM enjoyed with STRZOK et al is being held in high esteem when it came to Cheryl Mills and others, but not with Trump and Cohen.

'The USA will no doubt want to put him on trial for ensuring Hillary lost the White House.'
I think that's entirely wrong.

That wikipedia dump seems both legit and comprehensive--he's got stuff going back to at least 2004 and covering the world's scandals all over (from FARC to Druze). The most interesting thing I found was a longish email from Colin Powell telling HRC how to get around security measures with her Blackberry--she was right that he gave her advice about what she did and that she did it (though he warned that the info he had out of the system was incidental and not important and that she should do likewise--as we know, she didn't). There's a huge amount of info in this dump--it will take millions of people to get through it all--remember the media's call for citizens to help them go through Palin's emails? (and there's something in there about Palin's emails to boot)...

I get your point Beasts.
I took that to explain motivation.
Posted by: Buckeye | April 13, 2019 at 09:54 AM
Regardless, I expect the press to do their best to exploit his prosecution as a potential way to re-invigorate the "Russian Collusion" narrative.
They sure don't want to let that go.

Buckeye, the MFM are LIBTARDS. They CANNOT let the HOAX/FRAME=UP go. They are part of it.

Posted by: Beasts of England | April 13, 2019 at 10:04 AM
Jack,
She had the DD-214 and went over it with the funeral home director. They decided to only list the Bronze Star with V (now I forget the exact phrase she told me) because she figured since she put the Tet Offensive and Vietnam in the obit that everyone would understand he got the overseas ribbon. He left the Marines as a captain.
I cannot be too picky with her about how it is listed, as I am sure you understand. She is trying to make everything perfect and this is extremely traumatic for her because it was so sudden.

lurkersusie,
So, Jennifer Jacobs did not have lunch with Rosenstein nor did she speak with him. She is reporting what "people in the room" told her.
WHAT people? Waiters? People eavesdropping at a nearby table? Did they even understand exactly HOW the Russian election interference would be clarified?
This is typical media gossip similar to the last 2 years. Notice how she authoritatively begins that tweet like she knows exactly what's going on, when in fact, by the end of it we discover she is simply repeating gossip.
