From the NY Times:
Barr Assigns U.S. Attorney in Connecticut to Review Origins of Russia Inquiry
WASHINGTON — Attorney General William P. Barr has assigned the top federal prosecutor in Connecticut to examine the origins of the Russia investigation, according to two people familiar with the matter, a move that President Trump has long called for but that could anger law enforcement officials who insist that scrutiny of the Trump campaign was lawful.
John H. Durham, the United States attorney in Connecticut, has a history of serving as a special prosecutor investigating potential wrongdoing among national security officials, including the F.B.I.’s ties to a crime boss in Boston and accusations of C.I.A. abuses of detainees.
His inquiry is the third known investigation focused on the opening of an F.B.I. counterintelligence investigation during the 2016 presidential campaign into possible ties between Russia’s election interference and Trump associates.
The department’s inspector general, Michael E. Horowitz, is separately examining investigators’ use of wiretap applications and informants and whether any political bias against Mr. Trump influenced investigative decisions. And John W. Huber, the United States attorney in Utah, has been reviewing aspects of the Russia investigation. His findings have not been announced.
If I am reading this correctly, Durham is not a special counsel like Mueller:
Yet Mr. Durham’s role — essentially giving him a special assignment but no special powers — also appeared aimed at sidestepping the rare appointment of another special counsel like Robert S. Mueller III, a role that allows greater day-to-day independence.
While we wait for the Inspector General's report, Byron York reviews problems with what we know about the FISA applications vis a vis the Mueller report.
LOSING THE PLOT: Let's see if we can pry a correction out of the Times for this:
Law enforcement officials have also drawn intense criticism for using an informant — a typical investigative step — to secretly report on Mr. Page and Mr. Papadopoulos after they left the campaign...
C'mon. Stefan Halper met with at a July 11-12 Cambridge symposium, before Crossfire Hurricane was even opened. Page was on the FBI radar because he (and Papadopoulos) had been appointed to Trump's foreign policy advisory council in March.
The Times knows this, but seems to have forgotten. Or conflated Halper with the FISA warrant on Page, which was obtained after he left the Trump campaign. Or (crazy guess) they brain-locked on their earlier reporting, which included this (my emphasis):
The inspector general is also scrutinizing another early source of information for the Russia investigation, the people said: Mr. Horowitz’s investigators have been asking questions about the role of Stefan A. Halper, another F.B.I. informant, and his prior work for the bureau.
Agents involved in the Russia investigation asked Mr. Halper, an American academic who teaches in Britain, to gather information on Mr. Page and George Papadopoulos, another former Trump campaign foreign policy adviser.
Well, yes - George P. is a former advisor now, in 2019. He was a future former aide in September 2016 when Halper swung by with a hot aide to not-spy on him.
Be a real shame if the Burke tapes were not the only example.

Now that RR is out of the way, hopefully Barr gets to the bottom of this. I'd hate to think that Durham's role, while Mueller slow walked, was to protect people like Baker from having to tell the real investigators, in congress, the truth.

Carrying over from last thread. In Oct 2018 Jim Baker said he couldn't testify to matters before the Joint Oversight committee because Durham was investigating them.So SESSIONS appoint Durham and Barr just continued the appointment which has been ongoing for months.
So--AFAIK, the IG is examining whether the DOJ personnel violated the law and regs which pertain to them. Durham is investigating the origins of the FISA warrant (the key thing it seems to me) and I have no idea what Huber is doing but it's something. If DiGenova is right, the IG is also investigating the media role in the conduct of the DOJ and FBI personnel.
Remember the IG has no power to prosecute. It's possible that Durham will prosecute the offenses Horowitz is uncovering,
It's also possible that Durham's range of operation is broader than Horowitz and he will prosecute intelligence officials who were involved
Posted by: clarice | May 14, 2019 at 12:25 AM
Since Sessions recused from Russian matters, Clarice, what would he task Durham to do?
Rosenstein flew with Trump in October of 2018. Then Sessions was fired. Then their was the first semblance of action.

I'm still not convinced that Durham isn't just a rehire. His "investigation" in October allowed Baker to not answer Jordan's questions. It is the same kind of convenience that has permeated in favor of the bad guys.
Durham doesn't figure as anything more that a "just doing my job" guy. Now a leader like Barr created a real job for Durham.

An elderly Italian man lived alone in New Jersey . He wanted to plant his annual tomato garden, but it was very difficult work, since the ground was hard. His only son, Vincent, who used to help him, was in prison. The old man wrote a letter to his son and described his predicament:
Dear Vincent,
I am feeling pretty sad, because it looks like I won’t be able to plant my tomato garden this year. I’m just getting too old to be digging up a garden plot. I know if you were here my troubles would be over.. I know you would be happy to dig the plot for me, like in the old days.
Love, Papa
A few days later he received a letter from his son.
Dear Pop,
Don’t dig up that garden. That’s where the bodies are buried.
Love,
Vinnie
At 4 a.m. the next morning, FBI agents and local police arrived and dug up the entire area without finding any bodies. They apologized to the old man and left. That same day the old man received another letter from his son.
Dear Pop,
Go ahead and plant the tomatoes now. That’s the best I could do under the circumstances.
Love you,
Vinnie

83% against. You do not help the homeless by coddling them. You triage them and treat them.
Taxpayers, liberal and conservative, don't generally object to turning the homeless back into citizens. It's no biggie to loan some taxpayer money to the homeless when they can get back to a job and pay taxes themselves.
Those liberal politicians who treat it like it's a life-style choice don't have the support of their voters. Not really, they have to live with the day-to-day consequences that impact their neighborhoods.

China buys MUCH less from us than we buy from them, by almost 500 Billion Dollars, so we are in a fantastic position. Make your product at home in the USA and there is no Tariff. You can also buy from a non-Tariffed country instead of China. Many companies are leaving China.....
....so that they will be more competitive for USA buyers. We are now a much bigger economy than China, and have substantially increased in size since the great 2016 Election. We are the “piggy bank” that everyone wants to raid and take advantage of. NO MORE!

(1/4) The fact that the Mayor of a major city would attack an iconic organization (which employs thousands of hardworking New York taxpayers) for his own political gain is an abuse of power, unethical and simply counterintuitive. @NYCMayor
(2/4) Most Mayors do all they can to support great businesses - here in NYC, businesses are attacked for headlines and “political points” and is this very mentality that is causing people to leave our great city in droves.
(3/4) @NYCMayor if you ever think there is an initiative that would be great for New York, I would be happy to come to city hall and visit you anytime. But forcing a pop-up press conference in our lobby is simply

(4/4) Maybe one of these days we can work together, an invitation which remains open to you anytime. I wish you and our great city the best.

We can make a deal with China tomorrow, before their companies start leaving so as not to lose USA business, but the last time we were close they wanted to renegotiate the deal. No way! We are in a much better position now than any deal we could have made. Will be taking in.....
Billions of Dollars, and moving jobs back to the USA where they belong. Other countries are already negotiating with us because they don’t want this to happen to them. They must be a part of USA action. This should have been done by our leaders many years ago. Enjoy!

Anyone else starting to think Trump should stop tweeting about tariffs?
No. After eight fucking years of GWB keeping his dunce mouth shut and not directly addressing the nation about why he was doing what he did, and his idiot adviser Rove not dictating otherwise, he let the MFM set the narrative. This is a refreshing change.
Levin excoriated Kavanaugh last night for expanding the ability of ambulance chasers to bring class action anti trust suits. He reminded listeners that John Roberts plagiarized Kavanaugh's lower court ruling for JEFCare being a tax. We are stuck with this Bush approved menace forever.

Agree with MM, no. Leftist media never stops reporting their loser narrative. I'm glad Trump fires back.

You know your party is in trouble when more people run for President than attend their rallies.

Thank you everyone for participating in the Mossad plot to make @RashidaTlaib say something that would bring awareness to millions of people as to exactly how shitty Palestine Arabs were to the Jews post-Holocaust.

When the time is right we will make a deal with China. My respect and friendship with President Xi is unlimited but, as I have told him many times before, this must be a great deal for the United States or it just doesn’t make any sense. We have to be allowed to make up some.....
...of the tremendous ground we have lost to China on Trade since the ridiculous one sided formation of the WTO. It will all happen, and much faster than people think!
Posted by: MissMarple2 | May 14, 2019 at 07:20 AM
The media is trying to sell us on the idea that the tariffs on China will cost all of money.
Well, no, if you refrain from buying something made in China you won't pay a damn thing.
This is one step short of telling Americans not to buy Chinese-made goods. That message could become more explicit and a lot of Americans would agree.
Chinese stuff too expensive? It will lose shelf space for cheaper goods.

Our great Patriot Farmers will be one of the biggest beneficiaries of what is happening now. Hopefully China will do us the honor of continuing to buy our great farm product, the best, but if not your Country will be making up the difference based on a very high China buy......
...This money will come from the massive Tariffs being paid to the United States for allowing China, and others, to do business with us. The Farmers have been “forgotten” for many years. Their time is now!

Besson tried to recreate the magic with valerian he sank his studio.
I liked that movie! Yeah, the casing was way, way off, but it was still a lot of fun. And the opening set piece (a heist set in two different dimensions at the same time) was just SO neat.
