I assume that movie was filmed in Pakistan since no part of current India borders Afghanistan. I didn't realize Sikhs were monotheistic.

Jane: The words "merit based" are now anti american, according to the dems.

Quite. They much prefer "crony based", "privileged", or "legacy based".

There is no difference between what Democrats proposed and the college entrance scandal but that the college scandal was hidden.

Of course, with chain migration, it extend privilege forever.

Justifiable, not at all.

I was friendly with the Sikhs in college. And there was a bonus:The boys' mothers came to live with them and cooked the very best Indian food. (Some have called them the Jews of India.) Smart and fun to be with.

If you like golf then you need to go to any website hosting the PGA at Bethpage Black and watch how Brooks Koepka shot 63 today on the most damn difficult golf course I have ever played. And I was in my 20's and a single digit handicap.

Just watch the putt on 9, his 18th. A 30-foot cruise missile.

Glad I put my money on him. He's a beast.

Tiger? Umh, not so much. Sorry for Tiger fans. Jack's 18 wins are in no trouble.

When Sikhs take off the turban, do they unwrap the whole thing? Or do they come pre-wrapped, more like a hat that you can take on and off? Obviously, I know next to nothing about the Sikhs! Is the turban supposed to serve a particular purpose or is it a symbolic thing? In the movies, the turbans often seem so huge and out of proportion to people's heads that I wonder how they evolved.

Of course, a lot of the headdresses in places like Turkey were super-sized too, relatively speaking; and the hair-does of aristocratic women in the far east looked like they could tip you over if you weren't paying attention.. Not that western women haven't flirted with capsizing too:

My husband's old fraternity were sponsors of a Sikh kid--immigrants , family with 11 kids --who had shown great merit in school ( a school with not a lot of college going grads) but would need extra prep to excel in college--SAT prep, etc. He's a doctor now and has invited us to his wedding this summer. Great kid.

It's been my experience in the military if a leader wants to clean house they start firing people. It's usually simple clean and fast; and if the personnel currently in place won't or can't handle it, the leader will find someone who can. On the other hand if they want to protect people especially themselves while cleaning up a mess it turns into a long drawn out slog .
I don't know that I've ever seen anyone worry that much about someone underneath them as much as what The personal blowback will be .

The problem for all this has not been an inability to find and punish the miscreants. It's been having careers of going along to get along being exposed as well as institution loyalty, not wanting to see their organizations embarrassed .

Jim Eagle

Beasts,
No. Because of different greens. Shinnecock is all about the greens. Bethpage is all about the routing, bunkers, line of sight and angled fairways. I think the distance of the tee is a factor. Not many guy Koe3pkea s since Calcavecchia has shot 63 a Shinnecock. But this guy Koepka is someone to contend with and doesn't even get the recognition he should.

I saw him the Village during the Open and Mrs. Jib said who is that as he walked by. We were sitting outside at Le Charlot. I said it could only be
Koepka because of his presence and the way he walked. He knows how good he is and that has to be terrifying to his competitors.

Threadkiller

She looks ship-faced, JMH.

Beasts of England

He's a beast, JiB - and a heck of a player. The green complexes at Shinnecock look daunting - especially when they're shaved down for an Open. Bethpage's appear to have more forgiveness, both in shape and grasses.

Beasts,

PGA vs. USGA

Simple as that. But when you can bomb it 330 on every fairway and reach every par 5 in two like Koepka, who cares about greens. BTW, Tiger in his prime is 50 yards behind Koepka in USGA sanctioned events.

Not bad for an FSU kid. Frederic is not FSU while I am UF.

JKM the men aren't supposed to cut their hair..I think it's in a topknot and they wind the turban every day. They're also supposed to carry a special curved knife at all times.Of course, where that is impractical or illegal they compromise by wearing a charm in that shape.

It came across as a coverup that once again demonstrated that Democrats and the Clintons specifically enjoy a different justice system than everyone else.

Overall that ended up being a major boon for Trump because it motivated conservatives and independents to vote for him. If you want to disagree and believe Comey helped Hillary gain votes then that is fine by me.

Just last night you were challenging JMH to show where you'd claimed Comey was a good guy, and now you seem to be saying he very well might be.

Also, good job on once again trotting out the he's-just-giving-them-enough-rope excuse for seemingly bad behavior. It never gets old.

The good part is, it allows you to claim any behavior whether negative or positive is actually intended to help Trump. The bad part is, the only way you can tell that the seemingly negative actions are designed to help Trump is by assuming the person's motivation. When Adam Schiff does something particularly stupid that in the end helps Trump, you don't suddenly assume he's part of Trump's Army.

I thought of you earlier today when I was trying to organize & scan some old piles of family memorabilia and came across this little souvenir book (front & back covers). It was you who mentioned the Ausable Chasm, wasn't it?

Ausable Chasm 1

It has no publication date, but we could probably figure it out by dating the ladies' and gents' hats (not to mention their horse drawn conveyance:

Ausable Chasm 2

This appears to be the inspiration for the back cover's illustration:

Ausable Chasm 3

I've never been there, but someone in my family obviously has! It sounds like fun for young and old:

Winding stairways, galleries and bridges, securely fastened and protected on the ledges [!!!] and ravines found in the towering walls, make the Chasm accessible with perfect safety for over a mile from the entrance, the balance of trip being made in a boat which includes "Running the Rapids."
Looks like there are ledges enough to accommodate us all, if not suit every taste. Add a bit of roof, and Table Rock bears an uncanny resemblance to a verandah.

"I'd take the real Lurleen from Appalachia over some rich black or Hispanic's affirmative-action kid any day."

But here's the problem. Imagine the rich black and hispanic kids are really really smart, genius level, and show it constantly. They graduate from Yale, apply for a job and are told no one believes they earned a damn thing - it was all given to them. Same with Lurleen, she only got there because we were compensating for our horrible selves.

That's exactly what happened to Clarence Thomas who graduated top in his class at Yale and couldn't get a job because no one believed he earned it. But he did. How screwed up is that?

Just last night you were challenging JMH to show where you'd claimed Comey was a good guy, and now you seem to be saying he very well might be.

Criminals who get caught often make deals to cooperate with law enforcement in order to receive a lesser sentence. Comey has to answer for this involvement with the page FISA warrant as well as his leaks to the media and Wittes. What I said last night was Comey may be part of Trump's sting to take down those who committed crimes as part of the plea bargain-like deal in exchange for a pardon. That hasn't changed.

The new information that we learned of today is Baker's accusations that Comey was trying to blackmail Trump. New information means an updated opinion.

PS I've noticed not one person has said anything about the point that in the end Comey's mishandling of the email server issue cost Hillary votes and helped Trump gain votes. Doesn't matter whether he did it intentional or unintentionally. From the Democrats perspective either way Comey helped Trump win the election so they are looking to punish him for that.

I'm with you on that, Jane. Someone theorized that this adversity score stuff is in anticipation of affirmative action being shot down, presumably by SCOTUS. That would be a truly great day, and I think they'd be smart enough to decide a case in such a way as to prevent all non-merit-based preferences.

I've been revolted by affirmative action for a very long time, particularly when I was in management at a large tech company, which was for most of my career. The thing that pisses me off most, though, is that we got an otherwise unqualified, anti-American president out of it, who set in motion corruption we're still hoping can be eradicated before it's too late.

I don't think Comey in the email issues cost Hillary that many votes.

Comey effectively cleared her of the charges and the LIV really didn't care or understand what all the fuss concerning the emails was about. Anyone who was slightly more interested only heard "lack of intent"and "no prosecutor would bring charges".

While the left was furious, once classified material had been found in her emails this was about the least painful result they could expect. And until Weiner's laptop was found, it gave her plenty of time to put it behind her before the election.

Comey's Press conference is a fact.
Even now though it's effects on the election are largely speculation. mine is it helped Hillary more than it hurt her.
