not understanding this reference, but it the same place i've worked at for years.

in bluntest possible terms-executive management has done this to themselves and they treat us all as trash as we (the line employees) point this out. (they wanted to reduce test time, assembly, and back office stuff ... success ... now they have a final product that doesn't work that takes about 10x the time to figure out what is wrong with it and they have stovepiped all the skill to figure out what is wrong with the product into 2 people-both overworked and one very difficult to work with).

Narciso,

I have never joined AARP as I have no belief that they have the best interest of citizens, never-mind seniors, in particular, in mind. Just another organization captured to increase its' own worth and pay big money to the people who run it.

They get kick-backs on all their endorsements and lower-price discounts they offer to their membership.

Reminds me of the Buick ad. "It's not your father's AARP!"

Narciso79

Yes but the fact they are in league with one of the largest such institutions that stand in the way of lower prices.

jim nj

Peter, yes, I was turned on to jazz when I was 16-17. And listened to rock and roll, and jazz at the same time. And, because of my parents and movies had a taste for the BIG Band era, Cole Porter and many other Americana stylists.

3 guitars and a drum kit are not appealing to me. Strings, horns, organs, etc., so much more melodic. I like big sound.

Fusion still works for me. Any of the large bands we listened to that used horn sections, strings, organ still good.

I liked the Dave Clark Five more than the Beatles.

Saw Dave Brubeck when I was 18 and I can still hum the whole Take Five thing,

https://www.bing.com/videos/search?q=dave+brubeck&docid=608028687707803234&mid=331D170DA40DE5518E11331D170DA40DE5518E11&view=detail&FORM=VIRE

Saw and listened to so many good rock bands, but yeah, there are some things that are played out for me and I don't want to hear again.

I surprised myself in the 1980's when I went to Lincoln Center for an all-star be-bop concert. Walked out in the middle. I had liked be-bop up to that point, but had never heard so much at once. Too damn discordant to sit through. I got the sense that the best of the best hadn't worked with each other closely before.

jim nj

PIN,

It's like the way they upgraded computers. The new computer wouldn't always support your old media. You had to klooge a new solution usually with the help of a service that saw the problem before anyone else did.

I remember when they went from the 5 1/2 floppy to the 3 1/2 floppy disc. And from the 3 1/2 floppy to the diskette.

If you were smart you bought an obsolete drive on the new PC with the new drive.

Do you know about this guy, Miss Catsmeat?

Adam Worth (1844 – 8 January 1902) was a German-born American criminal. Scotland Yard Detective Robert Anderson nicknamed him "the Napoleon of the criminal world" (because of his short stature). California never ceases to amaze me on their homeless counts. These counts are conducted nation-wide every year in January by volunteers, often ex-homeless who know where to look.

That the California homeless count could increase by 17% and 43% in two communities is very bad.

One of two things is happening - more people in California are becoming homeless or homeless people from elsewhere are moving to California in some sense thinking they will find a better environment there.

jim nj

https://hotair.com/archives/2019/05/16/merkel-lumps-u-s-china-russia-global-rivals/

I think someone else posted this, but it's refreshing to hear Merkel call the US a rival. She put this out in the open, and I suspect she has probably felt this way for years.

Germany is a vassal state of the US that won't spend money for it's own defense and loves to export autos to the US that cost less then if Germany paid its' fair share of defense costs.

https://www.hughhewitt.com/serious-talk-about-the-growing-prospect-of-a-collision-with-iran/

Transcript of Admiral James Stavridis:

"Very tense, and let’s face it. John Bolton and Mike Pompeo weren’t swimming around those tankers putting limpet mines on the side of them. That clearly was conducted by Iran. Iran is also using drones to attack Saudi installations ashore. It’s the Iranians who are pushing forward with kinetic operations. Bombs are going off. Drones are attacking things. So this is as tense as I can think of since we were in those days when we looked at Praying Mantis or the escort of the tankers back during the tanker war. I think that at the highest level that we don’t want a war. No one wants a war in the Middle East. And certainly, President Trump with an election in 18 months doesn’t want a war in the Middle East. But if Iran continues to press, we have got to deter them. And I think we still have some measures to play to include cybersecurity as well as all of the movement of forces to the Gulf that are being discussed. I think the administration is playing this one about right."

More worried about Tehran or a junior Iranian officer making a mistake that requires a response from us.

Dave Brubeck's family lived in Wilton Ct for many years. Mike, his second son and Cathy, his only daughter rode at the same stable as I did. They were a wonderful family, down to earth and a lot of fun. Cathy and Michael were the only non-musicians out of the six children, and it was said that they were throwbacks to earlier times as Dave grew up on a ranch in California. Mike had learning disabilities and a stutter, but when you saw him around horses you would never know. He latter became a horse trainer. Cathy was always full of life. Her father even wrote a piece for her.

That link in turn was in an nyu entity tied to evidence-based policymaking in the US, UNICEF, and the Omidyar Network. Remember too the sat only matters at a relatively small % of colleges so once again it is about who gets into the elite schools in the first place so the students are then primed to ape the opinions of the profs who tell them that x and y are what people believe and value at these schools.

It's more or all about cultivating a worldview now, not knowledge except few understand there is a difference.

I would imagine that AARP, just like the WI teacher's union and the AMA, manages to make itself money by its involvement in everything it gets involved in, including insurance products and pharmacy benefit managing, no?

That why AMA, like the WI Teachers union, lost its members--it started doing a whole lot of things like endorsements that had NOTHING to do with actually serving its membership.

Like so many organizations, and nearly all government programs, may have begun with a good intention; morphs into a revenue generating source for a few.

Our subspecialty medical boards have been exposed as such recently, with "certifying exams" allowing officers and directors make hundreds of thousands of dollars off a process that takes enormous amounts of time as well as money, and for many docs, has nothing to do with their regular practice, and has never been shown to be of any benefit to patient care.

rse

Also, for anyone who thinks shifting to local government as the point of prog implementation is not planned, this blurb was also in one of today's news aggregators.

"The Data Science for Local Government project was about understanding how the growth of ‘data science’ is changing the way that local government works in the UK. We define data science as a dual shift which involves both bringing in new decision making and analytical techniques to local government work (e.g. machine learning and predictive analytics, artificial intelligence and A/B testing) and also expanding the types of data local government makes use of (for example, by repurposing administrative data, harvesting social media data, or working with mobile phone companies). The emergence of data science is facilitated by the growing availability of free, open-source tools for both collecting data and performing analysis.Based on extensive documentary review, a nationwide survey of local authorities, and in-depth interviews with over 30 practitioners, we have sought to produce a comprehensive guide to the different types of data science being undertaken in the UK, the types of opportunities and benefits created, and also some of the challenges and difficulties being encountered. Our aim was to provide a basis for people working in local government to start on their own data science projects, both by providing a library of dozens of ideas which have been tried elsewhere and also by providing hints and tips for overcoming key problems and challenges.

This report was supported by funding from Google."

MM, that Barr quote doesn't surprise me, the cover-up is still in full-swing.

In Medicine board certifications have value, so they can apply extortionary fees to get them. Anything more than the basic exam fees cost recovery is extortion.

In my field, the only benefit that has been shown is the INITIAL board certification--the one we get right after residency.
No benefit has been shown over the "renewal" that was enacted--now required to keep the original certification-- in the early 90s.

And many hospitals require board certification to have hospital privileges.

Old people were like me were grandfathered in (though we were offered "the opportunity" to join the recertification process--for free!)-- to keep us from fighting it that and preventing this from happening. Like Flynn, I was played. (Though I was smart enough to decline the "opportunity" to get myself obligated to the board for recertification. )

Not to be an Eeyore, but I still suspect the IG report will be disappointing if not a complete whitewash. More from Data Collaboration for the Common Good: Enabling Trust and Innovation Through Public-Private Partnerships

If data is the foundation of our digital society, then access to it will be vital for building the world we want. Addressing our most complex global challenges, making the best decisions during times of crisis and monitoring progress on the SDGs all require access to the most granular, timely and complete sets of data available. That won’t be possible without robust public-private data collaboration. A world of robust public-private data collaboration will also require a continued commitment to strengthening trust.
