Byron York presents a history of the Trump/Russian collusion charge. Byhis telling it rose during the summer of 2016 from the fog of the Clinton campaign, aided by briefings about the Steele dossier given to Clinton campaign officials.
In the days leading up to the Democratic convention, the Clinton campaign and its allies in the press saw Russia as a potentially valuable weapon for attacking Trump. On July 20, the New York Times' Andrew Rosenthal wrote a column headlined "Is Trump Obsessed With Putin and Russia?" Two days later, Rosenthal's Times colleague Paul Krugman wrote a piece entitled "Donald Trump, the Siberian Candidate" in which he asked, "If elected, would Donald Trump be Vladimir Putin's man in the White House?"
That same day, July 22, Wikileaks released emails from the Democratic National Committee. Two days later, on the 24th, Clinton campaign manager Robby Mook went on television to claim that not only was Russia behind the hack — that was later proven true — but also that the Trump campaign was in league with Russia.
"Donald Trump changed the Republican platform to become what some experts would regard as pro-Russian," Mook told ABC News, referring to a just-published Washington Post story that reported, incorrectly, that Trump aides had weakened the portion of the GOP platform regarding Russia and Ukraine.
"He has praised Vladimir Putin," Mook continued. "It's troubling."
What did Mook know and when did he know it? Steele's info was being passed to him or his team:
According to Russian Roulette, the book by reporters Michael Isikoff and David Corn, Steele sent the first installment to Fusion GPS in June 2016. Fusion, in turn, "gave Steele's reports and other research documents to Elias," according to a Washington Post account. And Elias briefed the Clinton campaign.
"We were getting briefings that were put together by the law firm with information," Mook recalled in an interview with CNN in late 2017. "So our internal team was presenting information, our lawyer was presenting information, you know, and we — and we sort of learned things in pieces."
So as Clinton and her aides pushed the collusion narrative, with the help of an enthusiastic press, campaign officials were also being briefed on the newest, freshest allegations from Steele.
The problem, of course, was that the allegations were not true. Steele also gave his reports to the FBI, which tried to verify them "line by line," according to former FBI general counsel James Baker. It did not succeed. Nearly three years later, the Mueller report failed to corroborate any of the dossier's serious allegations. It was wrong at best, a fraud at worst.
Hmm, so Team Clinton was peddling false anti-Trump info they had, through cutouts, bought from Russian government sources. Troubling? Troubling!
And what about Steele's information? John Solomon of The Hill has more bombshells:
Multiple witnesses have told Congress that, a week before Trump’s inauguration in January 2017, Britain’s top national security official sent a private communique to the incoming administration, addressing his country’s participation in the counterintelligence probe into the now-debunked Trump-Russia election collusion.
Most significantly, then-British national security adviser Sir Mark Lyall Grant claimed in the memo, hand-delivered to incoming U.S. national security adviser Mike Flynn’s team, that the British government lacked confidence in the credibility of former MI6 spy Christopher Steele’s Russia collusion evidence, according to congressional investigators who interviewed witnesses familiar with the memo.
We should wait patiently for the Inspector General report on this but it certainly seems that Team Clinton and the DoJ were colluding with Russia (based on their use of the term vis a vis Trump) or were duped by the Russians. Certainly, the Russian scheme to spread chaos and confusion exceeded expectations.
Collusion Never Dies.. it just smells that way..

Posted by: Porchlight | May 30, 2019 at 09:55 AM
There seems to be a slight problem with York's account.
Did Steele just happen to be assembling a fake dossier out of thin air for no reason, in the hope someone would pay him for the info?
He was self evidently commissioned by Hillary through her scum lawyers and scum Simpson et al at Fusion to conjure up a hit job/fairy tale.
We know this partly because Mook, a fine and pleasant lying scum, presents the implausible story that he and the campaign began to learn dribs and drabs by chance through the grape vine rather than from the guys we know they paid to create this mosaic of mendacity.

Barr created the situation for that whole Mueller fiasco by being out of town yesterday; then all of a sudden Mueller cobbles together a quick presser where he reads something awkwardly that he obviously didn't write and then Barr's underlings put out some lying statement about there being no disagreements when there obviously were.
Barr needs to stop going to these fucking conferences, just like Jeff Sessions did, until the Swamp is drained. That is Job 1 for him now and going forward.

Mueller didn't contradict Barr although he added more flavor to his alternative story.
Barr said that A happened. Mueller didn't that that A didn't happen. That equals "no conflict."
The clever part of the DoJ statement is their use of "or." " the office concluded that it would not reach a determination -- one way or the other -- "
Barr's version is not in conflict because A("one way") wasn't disputed despite Mueller dangling B("the other").

From the last thread...
TK. The little creep said this today...
"As JackIsBack learned the hard way I already explained how he was wrong to say either Mueller lied or Barr lied."
He has some inferiority issues. He's not well in the head.
When dickheads like you and JiB resort to personal attacks on a daily basis and no one but Iggy calls you out on it combined with the fact in JiB's case he turned out to be proven 100% wrong you can rest assured I am not going to let it slide. JiB even doubled down and proved himself a bigger dickhead when instead of admitting he was wrong he accused AG Barr of being part of the Deep State. Not one person here except for me called bullshit on that.
It doesn't have anything to do with having an inferiority complex. I just enjoy putting dickheads like you and JiB in their place.
Posted by: Tom R | May 30, 2019 at 10:17 AM
I think they're willing to risk leaving their core base hanging for a while longer because the field of play is not at all limited to 50 states. Yesterday's news in the banking world alone was more than I've seen in a lifetime. The Bank of Ireland, Bank of Singapore, it's all picking up pace.
So, Mueller and Barr put on a NothingNewness Show yesterday. Why?
Posted by: Melinda | May 30, 2019 at 10:21 AM
Captain Hate,
I am not going to get demoralized. The President is fighting this battle with few allies in DC other than a few guys in the House like Nunes, Meadows, and Jordan and some of his appointees in the cabinet and the White House.
I think he's doing an amazing job. I loved that press gaggle this morning because he is not a bit hesitant of calling out Mueller and the dem/press collusion.
Now I want to know what he's going to announce about the border.

They absolutely are doing it, CH.
Barr is clearly a swamp creature. He's shown nothing to the contrary.
He's had enough time to show that he's something better, to accomplish something, and he hasn't.
And I'm really sick of hearing about patience and how everything takes so long.
Here's a historical comparison. Pearl Harbor happened in December of 1941.
Two and a half years later, Japan's navy was smashed, Italy had surrendered, and D-Day was a week away.
We're two and a half years from the 2016 election, and what progress has been made defeating the bureaucrats of the deep state?

It does take some degree of resilience on my part to shrug off all the sewage and personal attacks that get thrown my way. I don't really enjoy it though so masochistic is the wrong term to use. I consider it defending my convictions, which IMO is a trait all conservatives should value.
I do think its very convenient how you are spinning how events played out yesterday. Yesterday you asked me several questions all of which I answered. I asked you a specific question that you said you wouldn't answer until I backed up my point about the FBI working with the Trump over the years. I provide you with a link to the FBI Vault and instead of answering the question you go into evasion mode and say you won't interact with me anymore. That is fine. I think most people here will be pleased if you can stick to your pledge. I'll take your evasion as a sign you didn't want to answer the question because it would force you to admit my reasoning was valid.

The Trump/Russian allegations have been obsessed-over for a few years now. There's no there there. Widespread agreement on that, all the Dems have moved on to "obstruction" of the non-crime.
The role of Hillary and the Dems has been known for just as long but it is troubling how hard it's been to get the ball rolling on that investigation. Clear indications of criminal behavior yet a feigned lack of interest in getting to the bottom of it.

I agree with your assessment that Mueller did not write the press release but what makes you say it is obvious that Mueller did not write it?
I used to give presentations at conferences and would usually practice them enough so that I needed just an outline so I could hit all points while keeping eye contact with the audience. I understand that Mueller had to use exact language for certain things but there were other boilerplate sections where he could have been more relaxed but never appeared to be so. Not reading your own words is a sure fire way to be uncomfortable. And he almost entirely read directly from the text.
PS I don't think Mueller could have held that press conference without Barr's approval. That's just an assumption based on my understanding of federal government protocol rules.
I'm sure you're right based on the DOJ backdrop. Maybe he called Barr at the last minute or the evening before and got approval.

That aligns with DiGenova's claim a couple weeks back that Weissman is who wrote the "snitty" letter to Barr and leaked it to the media.
It also aligns with a theory of one of the more prominent Twitter Sleuths (Econ/Intel Chick) who used to work for the DIA. I can't link to her Twitter account but off the top of my head I think her handle is @mikayesflores.
Yesterday she said the reason behind Mueller's press conference (aside from announcing his retirement) was that members of his team (probably Weissman) were threatening to go public with a lot of stuff because they didn't like how the official report was helping Trump. I guess the rationale is Mueller did what he did because of pressure that Weissman and others were putting on him. I don't necessarily agree with it but if Weissman is who wrote the script for Mueller's comments it synchs with your observation.

Not to belabor this point but if Mueller was the good guy you make him out to be he could have blown them all out of the water yesterday by saying exactly what they were doing. --When dickheads like you and JiB resort to personal attacks on a daily basis and no one but Iggy calls you out on it combined with the fact in JiB's case he turned out to be proven 100% wrong you can rest assured I am not going to let it slide.--
You should.
Not because I have lost quite a bit of respect for some people here in their dealings with you, though I have.
And not because defending yourself is wrong. It isn't.
You should for two reasons;
1. You make many good points [and many bad ones], but they are all lost in the pointless, stupid conflict that continues when you answer in kind. As OL pointed out the other day, RG makes a lot of the same points people yell at you for but there is very little conflict because he has a very different, good natured trash talking approach than you do and so defuses arguments that would become personal and ugly if he didn't.
2. It's the right thing to do.
A soft answer turneth away wrath; if your enemy thirsts give him a drink of water and by so doing pour hot coals on his head.*
If you don't rise to the bait and respond in kind but instead calmly stick to your guns [even as weird as some of your guns are], remain polite, stop with the lecturing tone and do let the insults slide one of two things will happen:
People will either keep calling you names and insulting you in spite of your politeness, which will very quickly make them appear to be unreasonable shit-stirring creeps, in contrast to your demeanor, and lose whatever support they have as the hot coals of revealing they were the real problem land on their head.
Or they will stop insulting you and calling you names and try to have serious but respectful disagreements.
Either result is better than the status quo which has made this place mighty unpleasant, no?
*I admittedly do not do as well at this as I should by a long shot.

Why not? He's resigning, after all, but I can't imagine Barr telling Mueller, "no, you can't speak" in any case - it would just cause problems.
Mueller's last stand was to try to deflect and discredit the coming shitstorm of truth that will ruin him and his cronies. Mueller knew there was no collusion and hung on through an election anyway, hoping to find or fabricate some obstruction? Then he should lose his pension.

Thanks, Iggy.
I haven't been around much in part because I've been busy but also because of the unnecessary infighting. Please for the sake of the blog, keep it civil.

She received varying levels of pushback from all of the co-hosts on the show

henry,
Maybe you're right and I shouldn't take Trumps's word for it. I do think, however, there were other people in that meeting.

She really does think the cover of time magazine means anything.

Miss M, Trump telling the truth seems to require fewer leaps in logic than the conspiracy of Trump with Mueller (and a long growing list of friends) deceptive reason for the meeting does.

At least we now have a definite answer on why Mueller was meeting with President Trump. I know we have all speculated about it.
MM, we have had this definite answer since Trump's interview in 2017 and that link and quote have been posted numerous times by Rocco and myself as well as others.
The only reason that there is a question is because of 4D Kabuki noise that gets shoved front and center so often.

There’s also been almost no attempt by the media to explain the events surrounding that “interview” and what preceded and followed it.

The year is 2019. Rambo lives the Boomer dream of owning a McMansion in a sunny, low tax state. He spends his days buying gold and silver from rosland capital and frequenting patriotic Facebook groups.
Then a millennial disrespects the troops in public...

I don't have enough information to prove that Mueller is a pedophile homosexual reptilian alien from Proxima Centauri b, but I can't exonerate him of those charges, either.

I just spent nearly $40 millllllllion in tax dollars along with UMPTEEN Dem donors and Rodham accolytes. I couldn't find ANYTHING to accuse, try or detail as to MR TRUMPS involvement in ANY Collusion, conspiracy, corruption, obstruction or criminality. But I'm CERTAIN, that he is BAD.
After all, he's ORANGE. You can thank me for getting bad actors such as MANAFORT and ROGER STONE off of the streets, that is just an added bonus that I provide. BTW. There is some reason why I didn't go after RODHAM et al, but I can't remember what it is. After all, she and Glenn Simpson, along with PERKINS COIE, used RUSSIAN INTEL and a DOSSIER to FRAME the POTUS DJT.

*$34B in new US auto manufacturing investments
*boost GDP
*increase exports to Canada & Mexico
But Pelosi would rather obstruct @realDonaldTrump than ratify a deal with so many benefits.

How many male employees of JPMorgan were primary caregivers at any time? I would venture they'd all be gay. Maybe that's the real reason for the suit.
