The WaPo editors come out swinging in defense of charter schools.
There’s nothing progressive about strangling charter schools
No, but there's a lot that's progressive about unquestioning fealty to public sector unions and to a belief in central government control.
Mayor deBlasio of NYC has a record on public school administration but fortunately he is not now nor will ever be more than an asterix candidate in the Presidential polls.
Among the less ludicrous candidates, Spartacus has some relevant history as former Mayor of Newark. In the Senate he has also voted on (and mostly for) the DC charter school program.
Chalkbeat and Dylan Scott of Vox have lots more. Let me bottom-line you - it's complicated. From Chalkbeat:
There’s no doubt the reforms were unpopular with many residents. Whether they improved outcomes for students has been the subject of debate.
A recent study led by Harvard researchers found that the changes led to an initial decline in student growth on state tests. By 2016, students’ annual gains in English, but not math, were higher than comparable students across New Jersey, the researchers found. Students’ scores have continued to rise, and graduation rates leapt nearly 20 percentage points since the overhaul began. Meanwhile, the city’s large charter-school networks — including North Star Academy, whose board Booker once sat on — rank among the top performing schools in the state.
Other indicators are less encouraging: About one in three students in Newark’s traditional schools were chronically absent last school year — about the same share as when the reforms began.
But whatever improvements the changes spurred have largely been overshadowed by the way they were enacted. Detailed in the book “The Prize” by journalist Dale Russakoff, the overhaul came to symbolize top-down reform imposed by ideological outsiders and highly paid consultants.
In recent years, Zuckerberg has reconsidered his approach to reform in Newark, saying he wants to “go in the opposite direction” by working more closely with community members and teachers unions.
First and pissed since once again my post on last thread is the last one.

100% Matriculation, 100% College acceptance.
Which Charter School can show that?
Posted by: Jim Eagle | May 28, 2019 at 03:12 PM
JiB, compare to Milwaukee Public Schools...Charters are way better. Sadly, Gov Evers is owned by the teachers unions (as he was his many terms as state superintendent of schools).
Remember schools are there to keep the teachers voting prog, plus any brainwashing those imbeciles can perform. Educating children is way down the list.

The Wa Po ran an article this week showing that certain ethnicities were being given HS diplomas in the very high income Montgomery Country school system even though they were not attending classes. (Think of that. It most cost taxpayers a minimum $12 K per year per student and they are handing out diplomas to kids who are not attending, probably the very kids who ost need to attend.)
In DC there are a lot of complaint by the administration that charter schools are drawing away as many as 50% of the publicly financed students from public schools , increasing costs because there's also demands to keep non performing schools operating.

I thought part of the point of charter schools was to be able to shutter the failing public (non-charter) schools.

The problem is the state tests are garbage as to establishing what students should know, so is the curriculum but that's another story.

Jimmyk, in Milwaukee the School District wont shut “neighborhood schools” down, or sell / lease close school buildings to charters. More open schools means more admins & teachers (ie more union dues). Cost effective education is never in the program.

Thanks for posting that article. I agree, and will add a couple of other things I know:
1. That show The Apprentice was watched by a bazillion people over the 13 years it ran, and everyone felt like they KNEW him.
2. Trump attended Marble Collegiate Church in Manhattan, Presbyterian and NORMAN VINCENT PEALE'S CHURCH!!
having been to a rally here, I will tell you that there are indeed all types of people, who will wait in line for hours and sit patiently, once in, and are wildly excited to see him. And they talk to you about how glad they are to have someone who LISTENS to them, and understands.
I don't think anyone can beat him unless there is massive fraud.

Melinda,
Thanks for that Atkisson article.
I knew the thing was bogus from the start. Trump is 2 years older than I am, and he grew up during the Cold War, just like me. I have an innate distrust of Russians stemming from my fears of them in my youth, and I imagine he carries some of those same feelings. Especially so, since Putin is ex-KGB.
In addition, Trump doesn't like anybody being in his business, particularly someone like Vladimir Putin.
The whole story was concocted by Hillary and Obama because that is JUST the sort of thing they would do, commie-lovers as they are.

The original vision for charters was hatched by systems theorist, Bela Banathy, in the early 70s as a means to transform education away from an academic focus. I have all the documents and people are surprised, if they actually read the charter, that they eesentially create a vision that aligns with what I laid out as Transformational outcomes based education in my book.
It can be better than a regular public school, but they have a surprising vision of what constitutes student achievement.
On famous brushes, I sat next to the then head of apple on a flight to west coast and learned stories about other well-known tech heads in the mid 90s.
Plus I was in SF for an arbitration that left me no time to go home for weekend so son and hubby came to visit me. Had a room at the mandarin oriental (now the Loew's) looking out over the bay bridge and julia child was staying there as well. She saw my 4 year old son's curls and started running her hands through his hair with that high pitched voice crooning "what a cute little boy."
Had barry goldwater sit behind me in first class when I was coming back from a meeting in dc and the flight continued on from arizona from dc. He either drank too much in the crown room or had the beginnings of dementia.

Clemens was pulled for a pinch hitter having thrown 139 pitches. He had had no hits in 3 earlier plate appearances
So? Back in the 80s limiting pitch counts wasn't as big a deal as it is now. If you are 6 outs away from winning the World Series that you haven't won since 1918 and your Cy Young winning ace has a 3-2 lead and he tells you he is good to go and wants to stay in you let him stay in. Schiraldi was warm in the pen ready to go if Clemens got in trouble in the 8th. Either Clemens lied or McNamara lied and based on past behavior I will go with Clemens. He took himself out of the game at crunch time.

HOF AtC
I am fat as hell and that bikini pic is not empowering or the like. Rather the opposite.
I mean, hey, if she is confident going out in public like that, okay, fine. But I'm not going to celebrate it.
The only "fat acceptance" I want is to not be insulted to my face about being fat. That's it. Don't be a dick to me about it. That's just manners.
I've said it before, I'm fat and I have none of the health issues that we're told are inevitable from being fat and you know what that means? NOT A DAMN THING. Nothing. It doesn't mean medical science is lying to us and diets are slavery or whatever. It means that, right now at least, I'm dodging the bullets. Doesn't mean the bullets aren't there.
Grrrrrrrrr. Why do people have to pretend like everything must be celebrated?
Being fat is unhealthy. It's not good. No, I don't believe in being shamed, but I sure as hell do not want to be celebrated either.
Except for The Rack but that's different. That has an existence of its own.
In short, bite me in the non happy fun way, Gillette.

That's why a guy was walking around the Speedway on Sunday with a sign that asked people to sign a petition to fix them.
All Hogsett does is run around the city getting his picture taken in black churches.
Somebody in one of those churches should ask him about the number of murders and the increase in gang violence. And chuckholes.

Here is what I am used to, the MODE knob is where we talk about specifically MAX AC, AC, VENT, HEAT, DEFROST
The TEMP knob is where we talk specifically about WARM and COLD.
When you say "air conditioning" my mind points me to the MODE knob.

From the American Greatness article:
His decades-long crime spree that crossed state and international boundaries should not have gone unnoticed by federal law enforcement officials. Comey’s FBI should have been alerted that something was up even before girls started coming forward, given that there was already an internal investigation by Michigan State in 2014 into accusations of assault, or when Nassar suddenly retired as the team doctor in September 2015 as more allegations began to surface.
Don't the sexual abuse crimes Nassar committed fall under the jurisdiction of the state they were committed in? Seems to me law enforcement authorities in Michigan should be the ones who should primarily be getting the blame here.
