Well, Rocketman is probably smarter than most of the Dem field. And if he had been brought up in the USA with a regular Western education (not today's Common RottenCore education), he would have made a better POTUS than anyone in the Dem field.

It's 92 here and still going up. My company arrives around 2:30. I have the shades down on my lanai with one fan going and another on the way.
It's hot.
Having babyback ribs, corn on the cod, potato salad, beans, green salad and a weird cole slaw I've been trying to figure out since I went to the sushi bar. I think I'm getting closer.
Oh and my 'famous' "bourson cheese" first, and brownies and something else after. The booze will flow.
The whole time I'll be dreaming of the pool and kiwi will be in her pool dreaming of Alaska.

52F and sunny here...for the moment. T-storms due this afternoon. Again. It’s so bloody wet in Sun Valley, it’s crazy. We have managed to get the pups out on a romp every day in spite of the weather. All the creeks and rivers are so swollen we’re trying to keep our Golden, Jazzy, out of them. She couldn’t help herself this morning and found herself downstream about 100’ in just a few seconds. Fortunately she was able to scramble out.
Happy Memorial Day everyone.
(In spite of SV being in the progiest county in Idaho, the flags at all of the Sun Valley properties are at half mast. God Bless America.)

Speaking of fake:
Gillette's new ad is even more offensive than its previous "toxic masculinity" ad -- this time around focusing on a biological female who's taking testosterone and thus now sprouting face-hair, learning to shave the first time, with the parting message, "This is the best a man can get," with the whole ad constantly hammering home the message that she is a "man":
https://news.yahoo.com/transgender-man-first-shave-gillette-152300868.html
Seriously, has there been an actual real-journalism investigation into what happened that turned Gillette from a normal corporation into a leftist propaganda outfit? WHAT HAPPENED??? And why?

Finally caught up, sort of. Busy weekend, went to a blow-out wedding last night at the Marriott Marquis, 700 people, black tie. Probably cost a cool half mil at least. Our friends who invited us aren't so wealthy, but the other family evidently is. :) We heard they spent $150,000 on flowers.
MM's post of that largest American flag reminded me of my youth in Detroit when Hudson's department store hung what was then the world's largest:

I think that was on Flag Day, which nowadays no one even notices. And this was before Detroit became the role model for Venezuela.

91 degrees. Too hot to be outside and saw the first goodlooking bunch of collard greens yesterday in about the last two months. Had a $4.99 costco chicken carcass from last week that I broke apart this matter and added some onion, parsley sprigs, celery stalks including leaves, dried peppers. and a bay leaf. Came to a simmer at 8:30 am and I just turned it off.
Restock my trays of stock icecubes I use to augment storebought. Send my mom with some broth to get protein in my dad (watching him tomorrow so she can do a b'day luncheon for someone's 89th) and use the remainder for the collard greens.
Simmer new potatoes in stock until it can be mashed. Add spicy sausage (2 lbs broken up and browned) and simmer. Then collard greens get added cut into strips until just tender.
When red's endocrinolgist heard I made her collard greens on a regular basis and a similar recipe for lacinato kale he grinned from ear to ear. Diet matters a great deal to managing hashimotos.

The Seattle Times actually went to the trouble to report on the ceremony on Saturday.
https://www.seattletimes.com/seattle-news/in-blue-seattle-a-b-52-bomber-used-in-vietnam-is-dedicated/#comments
On a somewhat parallel note, we went to the World Premier (heh) of the movie that our housekeeper pal starred in. Maybe about 50 of us who were in the cast/crew/friends groups. The guy sitting in front of me hears us talking about Mad Dog from Saturday. So this guy is from Richland and says that MD is now living there as it was his childhood home. So this guy's buddies are always texting him about running into MD at a coffee shop or other every day circumstances. Apparently MD had become the lead of some charity/non-profit, although a quick check didn't reveal any obvious detail there.
Last note from the guy, it turns out that Sarah Palin's mom lives in Richland and Sarah pops up fairly often in a similar mode of just hanging out. No celebrity mode, which seems in perfect character for her.

84 degrees with a decent little breeze to keep things a little cooler. Actually had some sprinkles ealier that had me a bit worried.
I was worried because I've got a couple of large birds and sausages in the smoker. Will be pulling them off at 5:30.
It smells really good.
I've never brined birds before so I'm curious how they'll come out. After rinsing them off I let them soak in water for an hour and rinsed again. Rubbed them down with olive oil and then applied copious amounts of 'tennesse whiskey' and 'cajun/creole' dry rub. Packed the cavity with sliced apples.
I hope they turn out well and my company is suitably impressed.
I really need a new smoker though. My Brinkman vertical smoker is falling apart. This will probably be the last time I use it.

Good afternoon JOM! Hope everyone enjoyed the weekend. We just returned from our weekend in North Carolina attending our niece's wedding. The bride was beautiful,of course and it was wonderful to have the family together. In fact, the bride and her first cousins had their picture taken, because it was the first time in 17 years they had been together as a group. The bride's sister,my brother's other daughter made a whirlwind trip to NC. She flew from Logan to RDU and arrived at 11:30 Friday night. She performed her maid of honor duties and took a flight back to Boston at 7 Saturday night. Her little boy is having his surgery tomorrow. She has a very positive attitude. The first priority is to remove the large tumor and then his treatments and prognosis will be determined.
Prayers for Desmond,please.

rse, the focus on AI is IMO gibberish. “AI” is mostly a marketing buzzword.
There have been many efforts to apply and enforce standards in safety- and mission-critical software, up to and including proposals to license software engineers. Specific industries like medical devices, aviation and nuclear power have imposed various levels of regulation on technical solutions (that include software). The software industry generally has spent a lot of time and energy over decades experimenting (my opinion) with development processes intended to force a better understanding of what’s being produced and it’s correctness. Every place I’ve worked where safety of humans was relevant to something being developed, there were already reviews and additional requirements (functional and non-functional) imposed. That deals with “safe and effective”.
Not really sure why NIST is doing “ethical”, as they’re ill-equipped for that. Algorithms aren’t ethical or unethical, it’s how they’re deployed and that’s not fundamentally a technical question.
(I also have a problem with people with degrees in “Communication, Legal Institutions, Economics, and Government” putting themselves front-and-center in tech issues. They know enough to be dangerous, not enough to be useful.)

RIP Bill Buckner.
I was a Red Sox fan my entire life up till October 25, 1986. I don’t blame Bill. Schiraldi was one pitch away, couldn’t bring it home. Stanley threw a wild pitch after relieving Schiraldi that scored the tying run.
It was only game six, with game seven the next day, but I knew then that a team doesn’t recover from a loss like that.
In 1978 I had to watch the Sox lose the AL East tiebreaker to the Yankees. What made that worse was that during the middle of July when the Red Sox had at least a twelve game lead over the Yankees I happened to be drinking after bar hours with Marty Springstead, at that time the head AL ump, who predicted the Yankees would take the pennant.

Funny story,my niece's new husband is from a wonderful family. Lots of southern hospitality. When introductions were made at the pre-wedding party Friday night, the daughter told his grandfather that she worked in DC. He is a gracious southern gentleman and responded,"you mean that place in the distance with a bubble around it?" The daughter laughed and said,"yes sir."
Posted by: Marlene | May 27, 2019 at 05:25 PM
Indeed, most “AI” is bulk statistics. The “ethics” are entirely political. (No surprise given who is pushing them). Thus facial recognition good, except where it doubles as gaydar. (A recent example). The other problem with the ethics approach is same as gun control. Only the law abiding end up disarmed. You would think with all their ejumakayshun these SJWs would figure that out... too patriarchal or something.
