I say "half-hearted" because despite a link to the May 6 letter from Sec. Mnuchin to Chairman Neal, there is no link to the April 23 letter mentioned above. Too bad, and a disservice to any readers seeking information rather than affirmation, since
it is a 52 page opus surely representing the first draft of the legal opinion promised by the DoJ.
Also omitted is an interesting parallel to a case with which The Resistance is undoubtedly familiar, Trump's "Muslim ban". There, it was argued (with
early but not final success!) that the public record of Trump's comments should count against his textual statutory powers.
Turnabout being fair play, Sec. Mnuchin and the DoJ argue (Apr 23) that there is a voluminous public record making clear that the Democratic goal is the release of Trump's tax returns (probably protected by privacy laws), not, as Chairman Neal claimed, an attempt to assess the rigor and vigor of Presidential tax audits.
Also missing from the Times account (but not the Mnuchin letter) is the tidbit that Neal, prior to his chairmanship, acknowledged that a request for the President's returns would be a first, and the goal would be public exposure. Sadly, it is behind the WSJ paywall (I really need to put in a budget request) but here is a taste from
The Week (my emphasis of phrase quoted by Mnuchin):
The Democrats in line to lead the Senate and House finance committees say that if their party takes control of either house of Congress in the midterms, they will use their authority to obtain a copy of President Trump's tax returns. "We will do that," Rep. Richard Neal (D-Mass.), in line to chair the House Ways and Means Committee,
told The Wall Street Journal. Sen. Ron Wyden (D-Ore.), a
longer shot to become chairman of the Senate Finance Committee, said he would request Trump's tax returns, too.
"Under the tax code, the Ways and Means chairman can demand and receive any taxpayer's records from the IRS for confidential review,"
explains the Journal's Richard Rubin. "Neal wouldn't need approval from the full House, the Senate, or the administration." Neal said if he gets Trump's returns, he'll consult with his staff, House lawyers, and Democratic leaders; they could decide to release some or parts of the returns, which would require a committee vote, keep them confidential, or have them analyzed by nonpartisan analysts.
"This has never happened before, so you want to be very meticulous," Neal told the Journal.
The Resistance HQ editorial sidesteps all this by imagining the April 23 letter out of existence. Despite links to other other letters amongst IRS Commissioner Rettig, Chairman Neal and Sec. Mnuchin, there is no link to the April 23 letter. Instead, we are assured that
"The Treasury secretary cited no authority for this stonewalling..."
The courts will sort this out. The editorial does link to the
underlying law as well as the
Supreme Court decision on Watkins, which limited the reach of Congressional oversight, thereby enhancing the illusion that this is a thorough recap of the topic.
IMHO, further weaponizing the IRS is a dreadful idea in a country which relies so heavily on voluntary compliance with tax law. Personally, I wonder whether the Obama Administration went easy on tax audits of advisers such as Valerie Jarrett or big donors such as
billionaire Episcopalian Tom Steyer. Or has Nancy Pelosi (who provides disclosure forms but not returns) been getting a pass from IRS auditors? Senate Republicans could get curious about this tomorrow, and it would be a disastrous abuse of government power if they did.
MORE: Unless they work up the nerve to commence impeachment, the law is against the House Democrats, argues
this tax law prof. Bonus insight I read somewhere: House Judiciary can demand the returns in an impeachment context but has no legal avenue to release them. As if leaks never happen and wouldn't here...
Tom, you can't even get the Gateway Pundit claim correct. You cannot be trusted to make a fair count.
Maybe you can list all your predictions since 2016 and I'll go back and see what my counter arguments were.

Great clip at 5:55.
Joe and Victoria make a few points:
1. Wray is an empty suit, who made no speech to the FBI about how things were going to change.
2. There were NO whistle blowers even though many agents should have known people were being targeted politically.
3. We need a HUGE investigation where people are held accountable.

https://www.powerlineblog.com/archives/2019/05/an-inflection-point-on-school-shootings.php
AN INFLECTION POINT ON SCHOOL SHOOTINGS?
in a large country even a tiny number will have a disproportionate impact on the public mind—and also lead to copycats, or even a “contagion” of troubled young people deciding to enter the lists by shooting up a school.
This week’s shooting in Colorado might come to be seen as a turning point in this gruesome phenomenon for the simple reason that students, now encouraged to rush shooters and defend themselves rather than shelter passively in place and wait for police to arrive, did exactly that, and thereby surely reduced the potential carnage. It is tragic that the first student to rush one of the two shooters, Kendrick Castillo, died, but his sacrificial heroism enabled other students to gain the advantage on one of the shooters and prevent mass casualties

Possibly an explanation for Burr's subpoena
How does that relate to Burr?
Btw, I could see talking to Jr. if the Senate Intelligence Committee was moving on to investigating possible Russian disinfo associated with the dossier, and thinking the Veselnitskaya meeting might be worth revisiting on that basis. It's not like anyone in law enforcement has apparently taken this on.
The fact that Jr. resisted an initial request and had to be subpoenaed mitigates against this best-case scenario.

The ones [German cars] built before the wall came down were mostly bulletproof.
That's right, but I think you misattribute the cause.
In 1990, the year the Berlin wall came down, Lexus introduced their Mercedes clones (actually in 1989). Lexus built a quality product, but at a much lower cost.
Until Lexus, Mercedes engineered the car, and then priced it. After Lexus, they set a price point, and then did the engineering to meet it.
That was a HUGE change in culture.
So yes, Mercedes started outsourcing to locations that had lower-cost manufacturing. They had to, to drive down the price of their cars. And it was to their detriment. But it kept them alive.
BMW did the same thing. Cost point, not engineering point.
FWIW, I've only owned three cars in my life. All were/are German, with two Fords and one Mercedes. All were pre-Lexus (or unification). All were wonderful.
My current one, the 1987 Mercedes, still will last for a very, very long time.
I'm done with NSF for the day. Goodness they work us hard!

Mueller's report was a joke from the very start. It states, as fact, that Russians hacked the DNC, phished Podesta (as only a government entity could pull off such a complicated process) and affected the election with $100,000 of FarceBook ads. AS FACT.
I was laughing before I even finished the first page.
And Barr has not really countered any of this obvious bullshit. I'm not sure why, but he's let it all hang out there without mentioning what an obvious raft of shit it is.

I didn’t comment on the article speculating on Mueller’s budget due to all the “may have” conditionals. Again with the give-them-enough-rope tripe? Any criticism of Trump by Mueller will cause the Democrats to behave in a way we'd consider stupid. So what you're saying is that if Mueller says something positive about Trump, or negative about Trump, it shows he's on Trump's side, either by defending him, or by making the Democrats act foolishly. If all of we iron headed mules, impervious to counterarguments were trolls deserving a hush, I'd say things would be pretty quiet around here.
And just a quick notation that the truth seems to be somewhere in the middle, as usual. Mueller, if as black hatted as some presume could have made the report far more injurious to Trump.
OTOH, were his chapeau a whiter shade of pale it would have been much more clear cut in exonerating Trump, especially as regards obstruction.
The last thing a responsible prosecutor should ever do is find insufficient evidence of a crime to prosecute but leave a cloud hanging over the subject, especially in a case like this of national and international import, rather than some local gangster they couldn't pin something on.

Ext, that horrific plan out of Microsoft is Stalinist! For instance, "fresh blood" is a great phrase--will be sorry to have it expunged (as will vampire aficionados--I am NOT one of these).

That Zoe thread had a nice mix, MM. There were people thinking that RR was a White hat the whole time and others who think he cut a deal to become a white hat.
Nobody is praising Mueller though.

As Stephen McIntyre pointed out they had to bend and spindle section 1030 to convict Bradley and it was a close call a publisher like Assange never gets caught in the net, the travails of Tomlinson above are on point, and that's because they have the official secrets act over there.

Threadkiller,
I try to post stuff which makes people think.
I am so overwhelmed with so many people and pieces of information that I cannot take sides, so I just post things to make people weigh evidence.

What really irritates me about spell checking on the internet is that a proper noun without a capital letter is now flagged as a spelling error. I know the rules, but when I'm typing a search string, that one is irrelevant, and the redlining means a pointless detour to do the spell checking myself.

People ignore questions from me all the time. Should I assume something negative about them?
Style questions? Now?
Better late thans never. I recommend you kick your negative comments to the curb and try something like "jimmy, I am looking for the link. As soon as I find it, I will post it. Thanks!"
Doesn't that sound better than the "Have a MAGA day?"

More to it than that Ig and I suspect you know that.

Iggy @ 9:14
Well said,
I’ve read countless points from people here, Constitutional law professors, pundits, politicians, you name it about what a responsible prosecutor should or should not do. Several people here who Extraneus believes are more savvy, learned and logical than me have pointed out it’s not a prosecutors job to prove innocence.
Here’s the thing though. How many times in US history has the POTUS been accused by the opposition party of being a traitor to his country and under the control of one of our foreign adversaries? I’m certain TK will rush in to correct me if I’m wrong but I think the answer is a big fat 0.
My unsavvy, ignorant and illogical opinion is that the rules of what a responsible prosecutor should or should not do don’t apply to this obviously unique crisis in US history. To resolve the crisis Trump needed Mueller to prove he was innocent of the Democrat allegations of colluding with Russia were false. That is exactly what Mueller did.

I only correct you when you are wrong, Tom.

Just found these links I meant to post during the hawk discussion. Since they were already formatted:
Birds with head cams: a peregrine diving and then a goshawk flying through the woods. Yike.
Around the 1:36 mark on this video, there's an amazing sequence of a Peregrine going after a group of Pelicans!

I recommend you kick your negative comments to the curb
That is good advice you should adopt for yourself. Can you refrain from posting daily nonstop snark?
