I do most of my colonial work in New Netherland and New York.

Indentured servants were common, usually 7 years, to pay for their passage across the ocean. An indenture was a legal document with the terms written down on both sides of a piece of paper and then torn down the middle, thus the term indenture. If the tears didn't align properly when fitted together it was null and void.

The owner held one copy, the indentured servant, the other. Either could bring an action before a judge using existing contract law. If the owner was still in the home country he would send his copy to whoever was overseeing his property.

Most indentures required things that the owner had to provide to the servant at the end of his/her servitude. Things you might like to have to help transition.

People were free to leave, stay on as a paid hand, or in some cases open a partnership with their former owner. Think of highly skilled tradesman. The owner might still need his services and be willing to let him work for others also. If you had a little foresight as an owner you could have your original property and pieces of businesses earning partnership income.

As I basically understand the indentured laws at the time it was a contract and couldn't be extended without a new agreement.

One thing that was similar/different was their "welfare" practices. It usually applied to women who had lost their husbands and couldn't provide for themselves or their children.

They would be "bid" out in an auction. Whoever required the lowest payment from the government for taking care of them won. In return for housing and feeding them, the bidder got the benefit of their labor.

The kingsman film will have Ralph Fiennes (maybe a tipoff to his uncle and explorer whi was in the sas)

Clearly we went back on the tikr like Ron silver in time cop and stole Confederate gold or something

I thought kingsman was a nod to the harry palmer book (Michael Caine being a cast member) who is up against the establishment blokes like Edward fox. Who happens to be an Albanian mole

Well that will be awkward:

RE: Ansel Adams and the many others who used 4x5 or 8x10 view cameras. It's like going on a camping trip - the camera is big and heavy, the tripod has to be heavy and stocky enough to hold the camera steady, the negatives are loaded into two-sided magazines that are bulky and the other gear that goes along with it adds even more weight.

View camera photography, by the definition above, is a very, very deliberative process. When you're looking at a masterful photograph by Adams or his contemporaries you may not being seeing the first attempt at that photograph.

There may be times when you see something without your gear and you remember to come back later with your gear. You may photograph something and in the darkroom realize that you could have done better. The lighting is wrong, another angle might have been better, you need foreground framing because the photo lacks the sense of depth you felt.

When you have to go through that much work on one photo it becomes easier to understand why people like Adams sought to standardize everything they did with lots of darkroom. tests.

That way the only variable is focus and exposure. Focus with a view camera is relatively easy even though it's upside down. Exposure? Use a light-meter and then bracket your exposures.

If you've gone to that much trouble to lug your gear somewhere you want a range of negatives, especially if the light from above is changing, or if clouds are scudding in and out varying the lighting.

It takes a lot of patience. And sometimes you have to realize it's not working and You need to come back another time.

I took a look at the NYT's article on Trump's business tax returns and was amazed.

First, how the hell did they get them legally.

Second, what crew of idiots analyzed the returns. Yes, Trump hit a rough patch more than once, but don't they understand that at that level of finance you're working with partnerships and LLCs? OPM, other peoples money, not every business loss is equal when combined at a holding company level.

When you analyze a company you not only look at net profit or loss, but also cash flow.

I've followed the markets long enough to know that under that tax regime investors used to buy assets that would guarantee losses in order to shield their income elsewhere. If I remember correctly most of them were oil&gas exploration LLCs.

jimmyk, Old Lurker, want to weigh in?

Once you move out of the era of view cameras and Kodak portable 2x2's you hit the era of the Speed Graphic, normally with a 4x5 double-sided negative magazine and the inevitable flash-bulb holder.

Unlike the view cameras they were hand-held and became the standard in news photography. "f/8 and be there" came into vogue. A shitty grab-shot taken with a pre-set focus and an f/8 lens setting might be the BEST illustrative shot. More considered efforts might do as well, but you might miss what the French photographer, Henri Cartier-Bresson, called the "decisive moment."

Cartier-Bresson worked with a 35 mm Leica Parallax camera. You didn't look through the lens like in an SLR, but through a viewfinder.

After WWII and the Korean War people discovered the superior optics of Leicas and Nikons that with 35 mm film rivaled the quality of the now long in the tooth Speed Graphics. 35 or more exposures on a roll of film, fast re-loading, they became the new standard.

In the 1980's the chief photographer of the Morristown, NJ, Daily Record, switched to the new 110 film format because he was tired of the wight of his 35mm gear. He noted that the only thing you had to worry about is that you couldn't enlarge the negative as much, so you had to shoot much, much tighter.

Double the range of a Navy shell.

"The Excalibur projectile offers double the effective range of the conventional shell currently used with the MK-45 5-inch gun aboard Navy destroyers and cruisers. It can fire out to 40 kilometers, or almost 22 nautical miles, compared with the current range of just over 20 kilometers. The projectile also offers accuracy inside two meters."

Real estate developers in the 1980’s & 1990’s, more than 30 years ago, were entitled to massive write offs and depreciation which would, if one was actively building, show losses and tax losses in almost all cases. Much was non monetary. Sometimes considered “tax shelter,” ......

..you would get it by building, or even buying. You always wanted to show losses for tax purposes....almost all real estate developers did - and often re-negotiate with banks, it was sport. Additionally, the very old information put out is a highly inaccurate Fake News hit job!

At this point, they are all bad apples until they indivdially prove they are not. And I mean prove through public actions that are not open to question or interpretation.

Captain Hate

They moved it a few years ago CH. Too close to the Tour Champ or something.

Nope, this is the first year moving forward. This is the PGA fucking around capriciously with things just because they can. For over fifty years it's been Masters, US Open, British Open & PGA Championship in that order. Unlike other sports that keep stretching their seasons out for MOAR MONEY, you could mark future calendars by when the majors would be. Augusta National wouldn't knuckle under to anything like this; at least I don't think they would but after this who fucking knows?

There's one person that won't knuckle under and that's me. Fuck the PGA; I'll ignore their trash just like I do the NFL.

Doesn’t Riley *precisely* match what we are told is “toxic masculinity”?

and this guy said what I thought as soon as I heard how Riley died:

Achilles said...
If Riley, or any of the people in the area, had been allowed to carry a gun and defend himself he would be alive today.

I don't understand why they moved the PGA, Captain. They had been using the tag line 'Glory's last shot' - or something like that - for years, and it made sense. It's the least of the majors and I think the change will diminish it further.

Another Bob

No need MM, the precise language isn’t my point.

I’m inherently resistant to any and all of these sorts of initiative. It’s just a lot of political point-scoring. Especially with this sort, it’ll come along with yet another federal bureaucracy that will become politicized and used for purposes far afield from the initial intention.

Jack is Back!

Why they moved the PGA Championship:

I agree AB.

If half the country wasn't bat-shit crazy, a teacher bringing a firearm in his/her backpack wouldn't raise any eyebrows.

I suspect some already are. I know I would.

I'm not a golfer but I am certain that Augusta will not move the Masters. They have it timed perfectly to show off their dogwoods and azaleas!

Another Bob

Batshit crazy and stupid. The thing the antis never seem to understand is the number of people with guns they regularly encounter - and nothing bad happens.

Beasts of England

Thanks, JiB! Having attended / worked three PGAs in the South in August, I can appreciate that I'd rather they had been in May. lol

The reason for the China pullback & attempted renegotiation of the Trade Deal is the sincere HOPE that they will be able to “negotiate” with Joe Biden or one of the very weak Democrats, and thereby continue to ripoff the United States (($500 Billion a year)) for years to come....

....Guess what, that’s not going to happen! China has just informed us that they (Vice-Premier) are now coming to the U.S. to make a deal. We’ll see, but I am very happy with over $100 Billion a year in Tariffs filling U.S. coffers...great for U.S., not good for China!

Has this from the UN been posted from Monday? https://www.ipbes.net/news/ipbes-global-assessment-preview

Excuse to plan the world and this is the statement from group that oversees business schools all over the world. Based out of Case Western--GRLI.

"Yesterday in discussion with Emma Wilcox, CEO of SocEnv (an umbrella society for professional bodies in the UK), we reflected on recent developments and the sudden shift from "awareness and advocacy" for global responsibility to "urgency and action".

Statements of intent (such as the UK declaration), heavy-hitting scientific reports (such as the report from IPBES) and growing non-violent civil disobedience (as exemplified by the Extinction Rebellion & School Strike for Climate) helps amplify and multiply the moral obligation on governments, industry and civil society (including academia and education) to act with urgency and in the best interest of all of us in the long run.

After all - one can not declare a climate emergency or learn of unprecedented extinction rates and simply continue with business as usual?

In the same vein, a few weeks earlier at AACSB's Change for Good ICAM event, Tom Robinson highlighted the necessary moral underpinning of economic activity built on empathy and the recognition of the social and relational nature of humans.

Redefining the purpose of business to serve the common good and reframing economics to promote inclusive well-being leads us inevitably to "the existential economic question of our time" as Kate Raworth proposed in a recent media interviews - How do we end our addiction to endless growth?"

Steph-make sure K at least walks through here and gawks at what seafood and produce can look like.
