Or else what? That's what I don't get.

We won't deport them if Trump gets money for more luxurious housing facilities at the border?

(Btw, I agree you have a good point. :-))

I don't think I've heard this before. Details please.

So huge winds through here two and a half hours ago, heavy rain. No power at my house and 484 others per Duke Power outage report line.
Endless sirens for about thirty minutes; friends sending pics of massive trees on houses and across roads.

Far worse--no internet with my hot spot til just now! ;-)
What's with that, Verizon??

This gets older each time it happens.
We are putting a nuclear reactor in the crawl space just as soon as the home units become available.

Also, no batteries in the flashlight down here--wtf?? Who took those out and didn't replace them? Not me, and the kids don't live here any more. And we don't have a dog. Somebody is going to hear about that when he gets home from the hospital.
Rechargeable flashlight in master bedroom appears to have died.

But we do have plenty of salt for the salt gun, and lots and lots and lots of liquor.
And we did need the rain.

Question for the JOM book lovers: Daughter was looking for some summer reading, and wanted an American history overview. She naively picked up the Howard Zinn trash history (“It had good reviews!”). I explained that it was like US history according to Bernie Sanders.

So I want to find an alternative. Any recommendations?

Narciso79

Paul Johnson's Larry schweikart, wilfred McKay has a new one, stay away from jill lepores door stop.

sbwaters

Not an overview, but "1776" by David McCullough is a compelling read and an excellent audiobook, read by the author.

jimmyk

I’m not worried about her taking Zinn seriously, I just think she’ll realize part way in that it’s garbage and a waste of time. I don’t think broad overviews are the way to do history, but she didn’t ask my advice. :)

Anyway, thanks for the suggestions. I may actually have the Paul Johnson book somewhere, having intended to read it but never got around to it. I liked his History of the Jews.

clarice

1776 is good, I agree.

sbwaters

jimmyk, I have long thought a beginning history course in school should start with the first and last chapters of "1776".

The first chapter details the parliamentary discussions about the colonies. Nice to hear the arguments.

THe last chapter sets aside the conventional reasons for the American victory pointing out how persevering George Washington was, and how much it mattered.

Understanding what matters and why should be the enduring wisdom pulled from the study of history.

Manuel Transmission

Latest on the senior center flap.

https://sanjuanislander.com/opinion/letters/29407/hobbel-the-flag-the-pledge-and-the-mullis-center-a-controversy

The fellow who wrote this is in our extended circle of friends, a remarkable artist who loves to paint (pictures of) classic cars. In his early years in the Netherlands, he was an Air Force pilot and got in trouble when he had a bird strike, which always has a post mortum related to engine damage, etc. Well, turns out his bird feathers came for chickens. . . They were not impressed. (Something to do with a little knap of the earth flying.) :)

Separate from that, the gang have been digging deep into the senior center operations. It is a 501(C)(3) and they have been stashing a lot of Fed money without using it properly, while also claiming they can't afford to repair their flagpole (among other trivial things).

I think our guys have enough leverage and motivation to do more digging. They expect there could easily be the typical scamming that ops, with no particular oversight, suffer from: credit card abuse, etc.

Jane

Amom,

Let me know if you solve it,

jimmyk

I agree sbw. I haven’t read 1776, but I’ve read bios of most of the founding fathers, and basically drew the history from that. Same with the Civil War, with bios of Lincoln and Grant. I did read an excellent narrative history of WWII, A World at Arms, by Weinberg.

Now that the first day of summer is past, I think this is the first weather that I ordinarily associate with Spring has happened for the full season that I can remember. Granted there's been way too much rain but that's associated with Spring, no? And there haven't been any hellishly hot days with only a couple in the low 80s. The last couple days have been in the low 70s with low humidity so I was able to cut the grass. Everything is very green. The forecast is for a gradual warming into the low 80s but with little rain.

I feel bad for the flooded farmers, and for the rest of us when food prices climb, but hopefully better days are ahead for them.

clarice

On Facebook I ran across a pointer to “The Long March of Individualism Comes To A Juddering Halt - The world is seeing a realignment towards collectivist ideals”.

I have seldom seen someone so deep in the soup that it seems impossible to find balance, an understanding of what is worthwhile, and a sense of direction.

All expressed as if the author was lecturing us into clarity.

Captain Hate

What about The Great Upheaval, jimmyk? I think it's narrated vividly enough for a young reader, judging from how immature I can be constantly at times, and it accurately places the fledgling nation in the changing world order.

Narciso79

Jane

ManTran,

jimmyk

I thought about that, CH, but she says she wants an overview of US history. I don’t think I can dissuade her on that.

Manuel Transmission

WX: I enjoy everyone's bragging/complaining about their local weather. What is particularly fun is that I almost never cringe that I wish we had whatever others are (ahem) enjoying. Winter, which is our poor season suffers from a lot of grey days, but daily high temps in the 40s. Our summer half usually delivers mostly sunny days in the mid 60s to the mid 70s. (Seattle, by comparison, has over twice the rain and generally higher temps in the summer.)

Having lived in several micro-climates in the greater NW along with a dozen years in AZ and the full four seasons of central Ahia for well over three decades, I don't think there is another year round comfortable place I can imagine enticing me to move. Oh, one other factor that plays throughout all this: I hate to sweat! The cumulative weeks/months I've spent in FL, for instance, always drove me to the shower several times a day, given the higher humidity during those high temp days. No thanks. Just my two cents, mostly tongue in cheek.

Exactly right Narciso.

I got the full dose of US and Euro history in school. For the most part you paid enough attention to pass the tests and not sound like an idiot in class.

It wasn't until Mrs. Buckeye started her deep dive into her and my genealogy that history really started to come alive. All of a sudden I started asking WHY some relative did what they did 100, 200 or 500 years ago.

WHY did people feel motivated to hop on some pea-shooter sailing craft to go across an ocean to a place they only heard about?

WHY did supposedly religious pacifists cut a guys ear off when he wouldn't convert to Puritanism?

WHY did my Cherokee ancestors snooker both the English and the French and play one against the other?

When it was just some dry story in a textbook, it was hard to get interested.

OK, I haven't read Land of Hope.
But it's new, not a dusty classic which might be great but not necessarily as a first book on the topic.
It's an overview, from tribes crossing the Bering Strait to the Obama Admin.
It's solidly backed by conservatives.
It's a bestseller.
Seems likely to be a good choice 1) for summer reading 2) for a kid

That has been a huge story in the city for over a week. Of course, the local paper and media have sided with Brebeuf.

I think the Jesuits are full of themselves and if they think they should use their own "informed conscience" and ignore Church teachings, then what they are are Protestants.

Brebeuf has a reputation as a demanding academic school, but for a long time they have sort of ignored anything religious other than the nominal masses and religious ed class.

OK, if this is true we have some serious stuff going on:

John 'America First Nationalist' Salisbury
‏ @5Strat
39m39 minutes ago

New intel - The Iranians had 4 busloads with a total of 150 women and children ready to go and directly after the Schumer/Pelosi/ @realDonaldTrump meeting the buses were told where to drive to - white hats monitored the entire time.

Narciso79

What do they call these human shields, so was it a naval base a series of missile launchers lined up like the Hanoi courtyard in flight of the intruder

Another Bob

MM, I’m curious what the Catholic response to the current Protestant pope will be after he’s gone.

sbwaters

MM, who is Salisbury. My too good to check detector is pinned.

MissMarple2

Narciso,

According to what I am reading in that guy's Twitter feed, the CIA may have contacted the Iranians after getting the targets from Pelosi and/or Schumer. Those people were being monitored by people who suspected a trap.

That is why he believes Trump was so specific about the number, and why he got the number later than all of the critics said he should have gotten it.

Fascinating theory. I don't know if it's true, but I swear to you that video of Schumer and Pelosi being all happy after the meeting with the President, along with the numerous trips by Kerry, Feinstein and Obama to meet with Iranians IN Iran, and it does make me wonder.

MissMarple2

sbwaters,

He's a guy I follow who knows something about how the intelligence agencies work. I have no other evidence or credentials for him.

That is why I only offer it as a theory with the caveat that I don't know it is true.

However, it's an interesting bit of reading for Saturday night, and I would feel bad if it DID turn out to be true and I had failed to report it.

I will go see if there is anything which ads or subtracts from the believable nature of the story.

Buckeye

I don't know who Salisbury is or whether he is credible, but it sure lines up perfectly with the "victory" dance Chuck and Nancy were doing yesterday afternoon.

Are you surprised at how dishonorable they are?

I'm not.

Narciso79

Well human shield are not unheard of both in Iran as well as afghanistam, reminds of an opening scene in the nearly cinema verite demolition man, except denis Leary turned into an idiot about a decade later

sbwaters

Are you surprised at how dishonorable they are?

That is a conclusion to which I am not prepared to jump.

MissMarple2

sbwaters,

I discovered that the video with Pelosi and Schumer celebrating in the White House parking lot was taken by a White House photographer placed there by the President.

sbwaters

the CIA may have contacted the Iranians after getting the targets from Pelosi and/or Schumer.

Why would the CIA dare to contact the Iranians?

MissMarple2

Also, Salisbury says that the drone had it's signal channged to resemble an F-17 (manned fighter) and that the coordinates were given to the CIA contact in Iran.

Said asset was executed a few days ago.

MissMarple2

sbwaters,

Remember who used to be head of the CIA under Obama. John Brennan, Muslim convert and Marxist.

It is not inconceivable to me that he would have placed contacts in Iran.

Another Bob

@5Strat seems one of the Q crowd squared.

It was an F-18 “they” tried to get shot down to start the war. White hats got wind and substituted an electronically disguised drone to smoke them out.

He claims “they” (deep state) also tried to shoot down AF1.

I’ll pass.

Narciso79

On whose side is the question, noe theres another fellow he was known as the wolf in zero d30 the times outed him as part of the Iran taskforce

MissMarple2

Secretary Pompeo's statement:

https://www.state.gov/statement-on-iranian-disinformation/

Narciso79

They already have a drone from 2012, it's all older model, they've already reverse engineered anc have a fair understanding of how it works

I'm struck ar the soecifity of that number 150

sbwaters

In th midst of noise, I prefer not to speculate, but to follow what Trump and Pompeo have marked out.

They build trust where trust is necessary.

One would think that Schumer and Pelosi would learn that after a while.

I trust that if Brennan duplicity remains in the CIA that the word treason eventually will be properly applied.

Narciso79

This is reported what was used:

https://www.longwarjournal.org/archives/2018/04/analysis-an-iranian-sam-in-the-arabian-peninsula.php

clarice

I think some of this stuff is farfetched.

MissMarple2

Another Bob,

I haven't even brought the way wacked-out theories here that I run across. It's Saturday night, the President is at Camp David which is unusual, he told us he's working on Iran, so hey, I thought I would post it.

I don't blame anyone for thinking it's Fantasyland.

Manuel Transmission

CH, Williams is part of what the locals call ‘the Rim’. Everything up on the plateau is generally the same: higher and cooler. My only problem with it is that like a lot of the rest of the great SW, there’s not much variety day to day. Some dry snow in winter, but otherwise a boring sameness. Phoenix is similar, but 20+ deg warmer year around.

BTW, we are still looking forward to meeting up with Katie Pavlich’s folks in Sedona, who we became friends with on that last NRO cruise to AK. They raised Katie in Flagstaff and then retired just down the hill in Sedona.

Narciso79

As to the sepah saying it was over Iranian airspace, they nearly always do that. That was the story they fed to sy hersh about kali 007, that's the story with the Btr shootdown

MissMarple2

clarice,

I understand. However, that NXIVM trial had some eye-opening connections and I would never have thought such a thing existed.
