What's the most likely explanation, they sent the drone with high tech surveillance to detect what we would be dealing with in the event we really had to challenge the revolutionary guard, coming after the tanker incident it was a calculated risk but not like an sr 71 or Aurora overflight.

Sedona's really nice, despite all the nutjob spiritual types that congregate there; the drive from Williams had some breathtaking scenery. I guess you're out of the Sonoran desert when you're there although you still have to climb some to get to Jerome, or the rim you mentioned that I-40 goes across. I saw aspens on a small mountain outside of Williams so you're starting to get up there in elevation.

The guy from Toledo in Williams said that after it snows the sun comes out so there's not the depressing northern Ohio greyness of winter.

Jerome holds a special place for me. The last two years of high school we went up there for the Ghost City Hillclimb. Saw my first XKE there and then saw it making runs with the cowl removed after the driver bent it up hitting a hay bail. I also saw my first full race 356 Speedster and it was painted the perfect color: anthracite grey, which became the only color I would pick given the choice thereafter. Oh, and both years, the Hillclimb was the weekend of our prom, which also was the perfect trade off. :)

I've been meaning to post this and keep forgetting to. You all remember NY refusing a new gas pipeline. This happened just after and didn't get national attention. A second gas pipeline from NJ underwater to Long Island was also rejected.

https://www.crainsnewyork.com/politics/nj-joins-ny-denying-permits-hotly-contested-natural-gas-pipeline

Because the proposed pipeline will run under NY and NJ coastal water both states have to sign off on it.

The fuse continues to burn.

MT,

I was going to agree with you and decided to look first.

None of it was shot in a US hotel. It was a sound-stage in England. The maze scene was shot in England. They used a Montana hotel for the exterior shots. And another hotel{?} for the scenic approach shot.

The Stanley Hotel in Estes Park was the inspiration and Stephen King stayed in one of its' rooms. I'm amazed.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Stanley_Hotel

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0081505/faq?ref_=tt_faq_1#fq0010466

Another site times out, but it says this on Bing search:

The Shining Filming Locations: These [exterior] scenes were actually shot at The Timberline Lodge, located in Mt Hood, Oregon. The opening scenes were filmed in Montana on the Going-To-The-Sun-Road in the Glacier National Park. The road was built in the 1930s I believe. The Timberline Lodge was where all the exterior filming of the hotel took place.

jim nj

Narciso,

I mentioned sometime ago that National Grid, who runs most of the gas distribution on LI, stopped taking new gas hook-up requests on LI at about this same time. Currently Nassau, Suffolk and Westchester Counties can get no new gas hook-ups.

The companies banning new hook-ups have a real concern that they will run out of gas on a very cold day.

We have more than enough engineers here who would, I think, agree with me that taking down and re-starting an electrical grid is relatively easy to do compared to a gas grid with all those pilot lights.

The other question is how do you build any new real estate in those counties now?

It's incredibly short-sighted policy.

Manuel Transmission

Thx, jim_nj. Maybe only King’s inspiration was revealed back in the day.

jim nj

I stumbled across this:

https://nationalinterest.org/blog/buzz/top-secret-no-longer-new-mach-5-sr-72-spy-plane-could-beat-everything-63782

Still in development, but expected to carry a payload this time around. Imagine it equipped with Mach 5 missiles. Hell, imagine the glide path of a smart bomb dropped at Mach 5 from 60,000 feet. I don't know the math, but would guess that that is a few hundred miles. You could slingshot a bomb from outside the targeted country.

jim nj

MT,

Movies - what can't they do? So apparently, for the maze scene, they run out of a hotel in Montana into a hedge maze in England. It's like magic.

jim nj

From the MM post at 11:58

"This week's big leak about a major Immigration and Customs Enforcement operation was orchestrated by acting Homeland Security Secretary Kevin McAleenan in an effort to sabotage the raids before they were scheduled to take place, according to three current and two former senior administration officials."

If true, fire him now,

Manuel Transmission

I wonder whatever happened to the supposedly real Aurora project. Maybe the SR-72 is it.

Had Christmas dinner with a bunch of local pilots and sat next to the guest of honor who was a backseater on a 71. He claimed they could have an engine out over NM and dead stick it back to Beale. Never tried to do the math on that. He was also the first guy to do a fuel dump to prove it wouldn’t burn the plane up given its very hot skin. Their route was north from Beale, right turn at Montana, dump fuel, get refueled, buzz on out to NY, turn around, retrace their path home. When they got back to MT, there was this perfect mothership at 80,000 ft that ended up being reported on for a hundred miles around. That was their vaporized fuel still glowing in the long since setting sun down on the ground.

Can someone help me debug this keto bread recipe?

Keto Farmers Bread

i chose this recipe because it uses the oat flour I recently purchased. I substituted 10 oz cream cheese for Quark. After 90 minutes in the oven the center of the bread was still somewhat moist and more doughy than bready. I left the bread in the oven for 30 more minutes but the center remained doughy. The outer crust just got crustier.

The bread tastes fine and if I cut it thin I can toast it. I made a bacon and mayo sandwich this morning. I'm thinking of using less cream cheese or maybe substituting olive oil.

I just finished reading the 3 Judith Curry articles somebody was kind enough to post. Judith Curry is a recent fresh breath of air on the climate science debate. She never wanted her present role in the debate. She was just focused on the truth.

As someone who has followed this debate for more than 20 years I have followed the work of many climate scientists.

For more than 20 years many of them have been focused on the truth and underwent severe attacks for not conforming.

Science is often about nuance. There are "truths," "falsities" and "nuance."

"Nuance" looks for commonality. It fairly examines both sides of the argument. And yet those researchers open to "nuance" have been brutally attacked for not accepting the "truth."

For more than 20 years the so-called "skeptics" have made more sense than the so-called "alarmists."

And for those of us who are still "skeptics," or as we should be called, "realists" we will always be under attack with arguments devoid of logic.

If you consider the amount of effort applied against us, we must be the immovable object resisting the overwhelming force.

This should be topic A today because it illustrates just how many deep state operatives are embedded in positions to keep anything they don't want to happen from occurring. Which includes just about all the MAGA agenda. And it surely explains all the foot dragging and dawdling in the DOJ because Sleepy Jeff didn't do one fucking thing to purge that snake pit other than some splashy high level firings. Dear friends came to visit and stay for the weekend. My keto experiment has had two hiccups, nothing major. We shared a tall bottle of beer on Friday while I served them steak, cauliflower and three salads (green, cucumber and cole slaw).
Tripel Karmeliet comes in a large bottle with a champagne style cork. It's 8.4 percent alcohol but smooth and light flavor. New to me but doubtless well known to our brew lovers. Saturday b'fast was keto-friendly bacon and eggs but they had brought a homemade lasagna which we ate for dinner.

Agree CH 100%.

A huge issue is the "Fourth Branch" of gov't, aka the Administrative State.
Example: Congress passes a short law decreeing clean air. EPA puts out multiple volumes of regulations to flesh out their interpretation of Congress' intentions. The regs have the force of law despite not being passed by Congress, despite being instituted by unelected officials.
If the bureaucracies don't obey the President we really do have the makings of a tyranny.
The well known Chevron Doctrine and the influential legal case "Auer" direct the courts to give deference to these unelected agencies by default. It's tough for a citizen or company to fight back in the courts.
I think Sen Mike Lee has been a leader in trying to highlight this issue along with some other Repubs

Because Justice Kavanaugh was recused from the case, the conservative wing was deprived of a potential fifth vote. But that vote may come: Judging from his record, Justice Kavanaugh is also no friend of agency power.

Good luck with that. Kavanaugh is becoming another John Roberts, most recently with voiding death sentence verdicts because of racial considerations that Justice Thomas was outraged by the stupid specifics. We were sold a RINO bill of goods with Kavanaugh.

James D.

We absolutely were, CH. and that’s after we went to the mat for him. And after he saw exactly what the progs/dems/msm he’s currying favor with were willing - no, happy and proud - to do to him and his family.

He can go straight to hell as far as I’m concerned.

MissMarple2

Regarding agency power, using the EPA as an example:

How do we know that various agency people aren't bought off to push regulations which help some companies and hurt others?

How do we know agency employees aren't using their implementation of regulations and inside knowledge to invest accordingly, or are tipping off friends and relatives?

How do we know that the agency people aren't using their demands for an increased enforcement budget to hire more of their pals, much as the colleges used student loans to hire all of those administrators?

In my opinion, these people have been allowed to portray themselves as the virtuous forces, when in fact they are doing a lot of harm.

Those hideous windmills kill hundreds of thousands of migratory birds at each installation. Why are migratory birds expendable in the cause of this unnecessary wind power? Who is profiting from these monstrosities and why isn't anyone investigating?

Captain Hate

Don't overreact to that stupid USA Today article. Arsenic is a naturally occurring element throughout the planet. It gets a bad rap because in large quantities it's a poison but in small quantities I think it has positive health characteristics (I'll defer to a-mom on that but I'm pretty sure that's correct). Before he left office Slick directed his EPA to set arsenic permissible levels to grossly unrealistic standards, knowing full fucking well it would lead to police state actions against innocent companies ill equipped to comply with impossible standards.
