Joe Gaffe-O-Matic Biden was at it again, this time talking up his civil relationship with some hard-line segregationist Dem Senators of the 70s. The Times:
Joe Biden, Recalling ‘Civility’ in Senate, Invokes Two Segregationist Senators
Joseph R. Biden Jr., defending himself on Tuesday night against suggestions that he is too “old fashioned” for today’s Democratic Party, invoked two Southern segregationist senators by name as he fondly recalled the “civility” of the Senate in the 1970s and 1980s.
Speaking at a fund-raiser at the Carlyle Hotel in New York City, Mr. Biden, 76, stressed the need to “be able to reach consensus under our system,” and cast his decades in the Senate as a time of relative comity. His remarks come as some in his party say that Mr. Biden is too focused on overtures to the right as he seeks the Democratic presidential nomination.
At the event, Mr. Biden noted that he served with the late Senators James O. Eastland of Mississippi and Herman Talmadge of Georgia, both Democrats who were staunch opponents of desegregation. Mr. Eastland was the powerful chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee when Mr. Biden entered the chamber in 1973.
That must have been the pre-cringe moment. Joe paid off with this next quote, which is begging to be taken out of context:
“I was in a caucus with James O. Eastland,” Mr. Biden said, slipping briefly into a Southern accent, according to a pool report from the fund-raiser. “He never called me ‘boy,’.
Oh my Joe, he never called you "boy" because you're white!!!
Well, fun's fun: the full quote is this, which is still pretty funny:
“He never called me ‘boy,’ he always called me ‘son.’”
Many are called 'son' but few are chosen. The good news: With Joe in it, CNN might even cut away from Trump occasionally since we have a new, yet old and reliable, source for "WTF did I just hear?" moments.

So sad that the Democrats are putting wonderful Hope Hicks through hell, for 3 years now, after total exoneration by Robert Mueller & the Mueller Report. They were unhappy with result so they want a Do Over. Very unfair & costly to her. Will it ever end? Why aren’t they.....
....asking Hillary Clinton why she deleted and acid washed her Emails AFTER getting a subpoena from Congress? Anybody else would be in jail for that, yet the Dems refuse to even bring it up. Rigged House Committee

When you look back on the whole Biden anthology, you have to wonder how people like him get re-elected and put in the positions of influence they accrue.
And people think he is smart? What does that say about our national IQ?
Not much.
Posted by: Jim Eagle | June 19, 2019 at 04:47 PM
Jack "What does that say about our national IQ?"
Considering the average was probably 102 (constant terms) when Biden was first elected, and has fallen to about 98 now, imagine what the next wave will be.

Have any other geeks fooled around with Tasker on an Android phone? It's an app for automating tasks. (E.g., turn Wi-Fi on when you're home and off when you leave, keep the screen from going to sleep when you're reading an eBook, etc.) Pretty amazing. I have it launch Waze when the phone connects to my car's bluetooth and kill it when it disconnects. Lots of other possibilities.

--That's the issue, a-mom. He has some dementia, particularly in the short-term memory department. So we fear that the stepsister could make trouble for us by claiming that we just got him to sign something without his really understanding what it was. God only knows why she is so insistent. She's not in his will as far as I know, though maybe she thinks she is.--
jimmyk,
You poor naive whippersnappers need us more experienced gents around just to keep from getting hornswoggled.
One of my life maxims is "you don't know someone's character until they become a potential heir".
A relatively small dustup now might save you a very large and nasty one later.
Demand a signed copy of the latest will or trust. If it is good and proper videotape your pop discussing it and approving of it assuming he is still competent enough to appear so on a video. But even if he appears incompetent and the will or trust is ok that makes it very tough for anyone to come up with something different later.
If it is not good and proper make sure a new one says what he wants while he is still only dealing with short term memory stuff.
Crooks and sneaks are like lies; they're half way around the world being thieves while the chumps of the world are still lacing up their boots.
If your stepsister is acting in a manner inconsistent with the known facts; a good assumption is the known facts and the real facts are very possibly two distinct sets.
Maybe she's just weird. If you don't find out why now, you'll likely regret it later.

https://donsurber.blogspot.com/2019/06/we-protect-rainbow-flag-but-not.html
New York City Police are looking for the person who burned a rainbow flag outside a gay bar two weeks ago.
The Daily News reported, "Police hope video and a surveillance image released Wednesday will lead them to the man wanted for setting two rainbow flags on fire outside a Harlem LGBTQ bar.
...
"The fires were set at the very start of Pride Month amid a disturbing 64% increase in hate crimes in the city this year, officials said. The rainbow flags symbolize gay pride."
The story did not mention that the increase is largely in anti-Semitic crimes. Through June 4, there were 118 hate crimes against Jews and 17 against homosexuals in New York City.
That burning a rainbow flag is against the law but not the American flag shows where the real power is in America. We are protecting gays and having gay pride months but they are not under attack the way Jewish people are.
But the bigger issue is why is OK to burn the American flag?

jimmy k, IANAL, but I second Ig here--get the medical POA changed now. It is bizarre that she doesn't support the idea.
If your dad only has mild short term memory loss, there isn't any reason his attorney won't do that for him. Unless he's been judged incompetent, he can make that designation.
There is nothing nefarious about a man's biological child(ren) having medical POA rather than his stepdaughter.
And exactly who is she going to complain to about that? What judge would object to a man's children who are available and involved in his life having it, rather than a stepdaughter who lives elsewhere half the year?
She has no input into this happening. Your dad doesn't need her permission to change his designee.
I don't know why she even needs to know it happened.

Racine County sheriff press conference on the accident. Truck hit the barrier between north and south lanes, pushing it into northbound lanes. That truck then burned up. The barrier in turn pushed three suvs into each other. A northbound truck went off the side while avoiding the suv tangle, crashed and burned. Both truck drivers died.
The sheriff notes he was late to the press conference because traffic is a mess over the whole county. Highway traffic was detoured to US 45 a rural two lane route (through Union Grove), then 36 to Ryan Road. Both directions.

--long post warning--
Hey Miss Marple,
My daughter 'snuck' down to Ellettsville from Chicago to surprise me for my combo bday/fathers day on Sunday. I say 'snuck' because I sniffed out the surprise a couple of days prior.
She did surprise me a bit by dragging the boyfriend down as well. Even more surprising, his parents came down too and got a hotel room as they weren't wanting to get left out of the weekend festivities.
Anyway, as we've talked about before I don't actually live in Bloomington but reside 7 miles to the west in Ellettsville. On Saturday we were having a cookout at my house. Weather was pretty lousy but it broke about 5:00 PM, so we broke out the cornhole boards and some adult libations and were having a good time.
I had to break away from the festivities to start the grilling and was soon revelling in the manly art with steaks, shrimp and chicken on the grates. Well... it wasn't quite as manly as I'd have preferred as the weather had forced me to use gas instead of charcoal but, things were still going pretty well.
Then the klaxons started sounding.
I stepped into the house to check the tv and channel 8 was in full 'Storm Team 8 weather emergency mode'. A tornado warning for Ellettsville was in effect and channel 8 said they had reports of a tornado between Spencer and Ellettsville. At that moment the power went out.
I thought 'Oh shit!'
I ran out to the front yard where a very light sprinkle and angry clouds to the west greeted me. I couldn't see over a line of trees and started to make my way into the road for a better vantage point as one of my dinner guests was standing on the front porch saying 'Get in here you fool!'
At that moment a tornado appeared spinning lackadasically thru the sky. It was probably a good half mile from me but it looked like it was in my neighbors back yard. I yelled at my guest 'Tell my wife to clear out the closets and get the kids in it!'
It was the first time in the 16 years I've live in this house that I really, really wished I had a basement. I can't here because about 6 feet down is where the limestone starts.
I moved a little further out so I could get a sense of it's bearing and then cognizant that I was standing in a flat space and a good target for a lightening strike beat feet for the house and told everyone I thought we were in good shape but we'd wait for the klaxons to die. Remembered the steaks, shrimp and chicken and ran out to kill the gas.
10 minutes later it was all over. Lost some branches but that was all I lost. Even the steaks were saved. We got out the weather radio, cranked it up and got the all clear and then had fired up every candle in the house and had a lovely candle light dinner.
The tornado destoryed some buildings about a mile immediately southwest of me and damaged or destroyed about 30 homes about a mile immediately northwest. I've seen tornadoes before but never that close.
We had great time late into the night without power playing Pictionary and some trivia game by candlelight. I woke up about 6:30 AM the next morning still without power and thought 'That means no coffee. Screw this.' and went back to sleep. Woke back up at 8 AM still without power and thought 'I gotta have coffee!'.
Took a ten minute trip to McDonald's to grab four coffees. Bad move as everyone else in Ellettsville had come up with the same genius ideal. Finally making it outta the parking lot about 9:10 AM I made my way back home. Driving thru my neighborhood I noticed outside lights on at various houses and arrived at my house to find everyone sitting around watching 'Storm Team 8' recount the storm damage on TV. An hour later we were all at the Village Deli in Bloomington waiting on a table for Sunday breakfast.
I don't think I'll ever call it the greatest Bday and Father's Day ever but, it was surely memorable and one I'll never forget.

Actually he said it wouldn't be as "challenging".
First, how many heterosexual men in history have said, "well I guess I like chicks, but not because I luvs me sum T&A, but because pursuing a relationship with a young lady will be more challenging than a young gentleman"?
If you said zero, that is indeed the correct answer.
Second, does anyone on planet earth believe him?

bubarooni,
We heard the sirens go off but no other warning, as the TV stations were mostly paying attention to south of us. Beech Grove (about a mile and a half from me) got hit with a small tornado. No one hurt, but some buildings damaged.
I heard on the radio we might have more tornadoes tonight. I will be paying attention.

Can't match henry, but last week in this neck of the woods a logging truck had pulled into a turnout to let cars past. This particular turnout ends fairly abruptly in a big shelf of rock so you have to get back on the highway. As he did so the 95 year old guy behind him [yes, you read that correctly] decided to try and pass him anyway.
Head on with a pop and his four kids.
Miraculously it was the 95 year old guy who died while two of the kids were serious enough for a chopper but they all ended up ok.
Usually the guy causing it escapes without injury while laying waste to everyone else.
Don't ask me what a 95 year old was doing with a license.

What is pointed about Biden in this anecdote is what a gutless worm he is, admitting you fiund the American equivalent of vervoerld doesn't single you out as brave. And herman talmadge that's dinosaur with a linger tail.

Joe Biden is so dumb he thinks fellatio is a character from The Barber of Seville.

I am usually all for getting rid of federal workers. This situation seems a bit complicated.

bubarooni,
I had to admit to my daughter that I was foolish in not going into the bathroom (unlike Maggie my dog) when the sirens went off.
They go off here in Indy so often that one simply thinks it's a precautionary action by the weather service, who doesn't like to be criticized.

Sending prayers out to all my fellow JOMers having trouble with difficult sibs and/or heritage issues. Been there, done that, at least in my case, time healed most wounds. Seems to be a normal ritual for most families.

Note Nixon was pretty liberal on race questions but eastland and talmadge were still regarded as respectable in the party

peter, I have 2 bros and 6 sis's.
the bros never have drama and the sis's always do.
i've got around 25 nieces and nephews and can't keep them straight except for the fact that if there is gossip about one it is invariably one the sis's.
i hate to make generalizations but, the bros are transparent and the gals opaque.
at family gatherings i generally stick to something like 'look how tall your boy is now!', 'Does she still play volleyball these days?', 'She looks just like you. You do know cloning is illegal, right?', 'Are you looking at any schools for next year?'.
