I will associate myself with DrJ and Henry’s comments about statistical process control/Six Sigma/all the other variants. I had a brief unfortunate stint at GE where it was thoroughly overused and misused.

I’ll extend that to various flavors of software development process where I could go on and on.

Both are signs that you have a management who lack understanding of the work.

Exactly right AB. Deming came to Ginormous Research about 40 yrs ago and gave a lecture. I was impressed with his success in Japan. But when we started our own company and buyers of our unique products started imposing all that ISO crap, we pretty much blew it off. Either buy our shit or let your operation continue to suffer for the lack of quality without it. Kinda like a Catch-22 for them.

My favorite cartoon posted on my cork board was Dogbert hustling the pointy haired boss with some six sigma crap and the boss through squinty eyes asks “weren’t you here awhile ago selling TQM?” And Dogbert says “totally, totally different name.” Scott definitely had it figured out.

Looking back over my career, there was always a boss that considered every employee as interchangeable with some yet to be hired stiff. So all the TQM and 6-sigma was a way to make them interchangeable. Might work making cars or phones, but anytime the environment isn’t predictable to 6-sigma, it’s just monkey motion for useless MBA middle managers.

This state of mind is why self driving cars will be the crowning disaster of the 21st Century. The outside world is not predictable to 6-sigma.

6 sigma and financial ungineering makes for extremely long, and profitable management careers. Client success might’ve proved a bit elusive, in the meantime.

What all that “smoothing” provides is ample trading fun when it all comes unglued, like it has since Bernanke left the building. Draghi’s departure in October will go a long way to finish things, but it’s Kuroda that remains the final fly in the ointment.

Mortgage fraud as a laundry tool, for example, was a great example of one of the things that was going on in 2004-2006 since no one was actually looking at the paperwork. Laundry requires a transaction somewhere on a financial institution’s books.

These two comments are not entirely unrelated.

The Infamous Ignatz

--They went on to become an economic power that at, one time, threatened US manufacturing, until mis-investment in real estate brought them down for over two decades.

China is looking very similar. It exports some very fine products, but a lot of what they export is dreck that doesn't last long.--

The differences between them are more significant than the similarities.
The malinvestment in real estate was a symptom not a cause. Japan has a somewhat centralized economy that suffered a debt fueled universal bubble in the eighties. Their solution to that was to shovel more debt into the boiler and so for thirty plus years they have stagnated. They're still prosperous but the lost wealth that would have been created is cumulative and vast.

China has followed a similar road only on a much larger absolute and relative scale. There the similarities diverge.
China is run by murderous gangster totalitarians. It's gigantic debt fueled bubble is in service to their gangster ideology. Japan has at times had regional ambitions. China has as well. Now, with communism as their guiding light China suffers global ambitions.
But they suffer an inferiority complex and paranoia much greater than Japan does especially since at the same time China was devolving into the dungeon of Mao's dilapidated castle Japan was being forced to open up and grow up by practicing self governance for the first time.
A communist Chinese empire and gulag that has already conquered and subjugated their near neighbors and that has worldwide ambitions is a whole different kettle of fish than a relatively free Japan that can barely muster the political will to defend itself.

When IC chips are designed, designers need rules specifying the minimum size shapes or minimum allowable spacing between shapes that will ultimately be printed on the chips, resulting in wiring or transistor features, etc. These rules are partly determined by the tolerances associated with the various patterning and process steps in a given technology.

I was once responsible for generating these design rules for a major tech company and actually had to explain to a clueless upper manager why 6-sigma rules would result in less dense, larger, lower-yielding chips than what we were currently building, and therefore a giant step backwards in competitiveness.

As others have pointed out, simplistic 6-sigma thinking can be dangerous.

Another Bob

MT, if you were here, you’d get a solid bro-hug for your 9:51. Been saying that for years too.

I’ve imagined executives sitting around complaining at the salaries they have to pay for good software types, wondering how they can cut that cost: “If we could reduce this to a bunch of checklists to follow, we could get trained monkeys to do this”.

The whole entire enterprise of “software process” can be read as a grand search for the right checklists. That someone might still actually need to understand the problem they’re solving, and be creative, never occurs.

And it makes work for petty bureaucrats forever.

The Infamous Ignatz

--I always wanted to be a journalist but could never figure out how to make money at it.--

Speaking of Trump's virtues, here's something I didn't know about until this week (gee, I wonder why):

Back in early 2018, before Senator McCain passed away, the Secretary of the Navy officially added him as a namesake for the USS John S. McCain, originally named for his Father and Grandfather.

If you think the SECNAV did that without the President's concurrence, you're an abject idiot. That the Senator until his dying day and now his family *still* shits on him every chance they get is the height of petty classless ingratitude.

The Infamous Ignatz

Great Pieces, clarice.
It demonstrates just how bassackwards we now have the process.
Instead of a congress of adults investigating, impeaching and removing a president who could then be prosecuted, we now set up a petty mandarin to criminally investigate him, but with the knowledge the petty mandarin will not indict nor can impeach him. The end result is political chaos and chicanery without any satisfactory resolution.
And there is a fundamental and irresolvable conflict at the certain of the whole thing; if the AG or Deputy AG is in control of the investigation and exercises that control the investigation is as much a sham as if the AG were doing it himself. If he doesn't exercise control you have an extra-constitutional loose cannon with no real accountability.

It's like both parties decided to insert a provision in the constitution to plant a barely accountable mole in an administration. But as always only the Dems will take full advantage of maximum mole insertion...which is not to be confused with Richard Gere's policy of maximum gerbil insertion.

He puts on a good show, but in my opinion, his material was just a wee limited, and his band, which was just a trio, needed another vocalist. Toured with a drummer who did something that was truly visually astounding, which was that he threw his drumsticks up in the air and caught them in between each beat. I stared and stared and could not figure out how it was possible. I think that drummer was Mike Burch.

If I am not mistaken, Six Sigma, TQM, The New Paradigm et. al. are all the result of good companies, making good products but then going out and hiring Booz-Allen-Hamilton, McKinsey, Anderson. Mega-Engineering-Construction went through all of them but never replaced Steve, Jr's. simple objective for every project: CSQCS or Client Satisfaction, Quality, Cost & Schedule.

The problem is you hire a consultant for some unknown but everyone-is-doing-it rationale and pretty soon you are spending millions, involving the organization in these silly mapping sessions when they should be doing CSQCS. Pretty soon, there is the inevitable cost-cutting routine and the first program you jettison is the consultant and their sexy new thing.

McKinsey even scammed Ginormous Research sometime after I left. Not sure if any of the hustle stuck, but they did move steadily away from their core strength of having a bunch of small groups who were the best in the world at what they did and were clever at banding together to do bigger more complex jobs. Friday night I caught John Pizzarelli and his Trio, Phillip Bailey and his band pulled from the local pool, Ann Hampton Calloway backed by The Urban Knights, ending with Ramsey Lewis backed by The Urban Knights.

Spectacular show where I learned two things I should’ve known going in.

One, Maurice White was Ramsey’s drummer before founding that other group with Phillip, who was also part of Ramsey’s rhythm section.

Two, Phillip also wrote (and toured) with Phil Collins, since only one of the two could read or write music.
