Last week it was MoDo and now Tom Frideman joins the ranks of those worried that the Dems will lose the Presidential election by nominating a left-wing nutjob.
But it may not matter. Trump will run against The Squad regardless of the nominee. That means a moderate Dem will be taking (and returning!) fire from both flanks. Or embracing the love of The Squad. Tough either way, but this is the face the Dems picked so they can grin and wear it.
Bracing... yes I need to brace the storage shelves to hold all the popcorn and beer I need stowed in anticipation.

Teddy Roosevelt was a "Progressive", but even he would be considered a racist today
The Progressive movement that Roosevelt was part of had formally died out by the 1950s when the McCarthy era and "Red Scare" were going on. The Communists of the late 1940s/1950s started referring to themselves as "Progressives" to disguise their true nature. Over the decades they deceived people into thinking they were just a continuation of Roosevelt's original Progressive movement when in reality the official platforms of the two Progressive movements shared nothing in common except the name. It's Wikipedia but it covers the basics:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Progressive_Party_(United_States,_1948)
This is one reason I hate it when people refer to Progressives as "liberals". Traditional liberalism as espoused by our Founding Fathers has nothing to do with Leftism/Marxism/Communism/Socialism/Progressivism or whatever they want to call themselves. IMO the foundations of liberalism are a core part of the country so legit "liberals" can be just as patriotic as MAGA conservatives.
IMO making a distinction between legit liberals and Leftists is something that all MAGA supporters need to be doing if we want to win the ongoing culture war. To defeat the domestic enemy of the US we have to expose their true nature for everyone to see. Recruiting legit liberals into the MAGA movement is mandatory for its ultimate success and IMO something Trump is succeeding with so far.

The story about the black indentured servant sounds like a common theme in my paternal line.
They ended up in Tennessee as tobacco plantation owners after initially coming to Jamestown, some as indentured servants.
Unlike the Angolan, they didn't own slave, but had huge families instead. For example, my grandfather was oldest of 20, my grandmother oldest of 11.
Same with the generations from late 1700s and the 1800s except the survival rate was much lower.
Even though my grandparents moved North after my father was born, my dad and his younger brother spent most every summer as kids working on the farm, with lots of cousins, aunts and uncles.
The joke in Claiborne county is that every other mailbox has our last name on it.

The world's largest education publisher has taken the first step towards phasing out print books by making all its learning resources "digital first".
Pearson said students would only be able to rent physical textbooks from now on, and they would be updated much less frequently.
The British firm hopes the move will make more students buy its e-textbooks which are updated continually.

if the digital resource is experiential instead of textual, it is a misnomer to refer to it as a textbook at all. Parents don't necessarily recognize the difference especially if the experiential, virtual reality, learning resource, still misleadingly bills itself as an e-textbook.
It reminds me of something michael horn said at a gppf function that he probably would not have if he had appreciated quite how well I was listening to what he was actually saying.

Students won't like it. They hate the cost of textbooks but most don't like to use ebooks instead.

Posted by: fdcol63 🇺🇸 | July 17, 2019 at 01:13 PM
Porch-notice the reference is to "online learning resource". These are not just ebook versions of text and that is certainly not the long term plan as mr horn and others have confirmed.
When red was in college she noticed students complaining about the true e-textbooks and why they had so much more difficulty learning content from them vs actually printed books. I had explained the difference to her for anyone trying to react to words as a whole vs reading phonetically. She would then explain it to them with the comment "I have a very nerdy mom."
All learning is trying to go experiential because it has a different effect on the brain and it makes it more malleable.

They declare they want to move away from text and have completely redefined what the word 'Literacy' actually means.
Calling these e-textbooks keeps the pretend facade that this is simply another way of delivering academic content when it is not at all.
Look at the federally-funded Learning Registry. It exists so that educators can access experiences that have worked to create the desired changes in other students with comparable characteristics.
Horn of the clayton chrsitenson institute actually said he didn't want anyone thinking that online resources were simply a matter of the form of the text. Also remember that virtual reality can be made to work however the software designer wishes to produce the desired effects. SRI proved back in the 80s that the human body reacts just as strongly to virtual experiences. It was a key point Willis Harman made in his book Global Mind Change.

The Maude Squad is a problem for the Dem's in exactly the opposite way it seems.
The Dem's biggest problem is their mainstream is now far, far left. These four cretinish bimbos make the mainstream nutters think they're normal.
Vanquishing the Squat and thinking loonies like Warren and Harris have appeal to the mainstream is a bigger problem than keeping the half pint harpies squawking on the sidelines, although neither is optimal.

Friedman says that any "sane, reasonable" Dem should be able to easily beat Trump. As if the Dems won't already have their hands full ousting a President who has brought good times, now they have to go out and find someone sane. Just seems too much to ask.
Changing gears, you'd think from the polls that Biden has a good shot at the nomination, but you wouldn't think that from surveying the British bookies where much of the world's political bets are placed. As of right now, and roughly as I peruse them, Trump is even money to be the next president - a dollar gets you two. Next, and all alone, is Kamala Harris at around 5 to 1. Next are the pair of Warren and Biden, who are each roughly 8 to 1. From there it's Buttigieg and Sanders, roughly 20 to 1. Corey Booker around 70 to 1, Beto 100 to 1.
I've always thought the fact that Harris checks off two woke boxes, while the best any of the others can manage is one (Booker would have two if he admitted he was gay) should be worth some kind of advantage.

Need clarification for what you are hinting at.
Here is the WAPO article: https://www.washingtonpost.com/investigations/76-billion-opioid-pills-newly-released-federal-data-unmasks-the-epidemic/2019/07/16/5f29fd62-a73e-11e9-86dd-d7f0e60391e9_story.html?_view=prod&utm_term=.c952eb47c7a7
Those 10 companies along with about a dozen others are now being sued in federal court in Cleveland by nearly 2,000 cities, towns and counties alleging that they conspired to flood the nation with opioids.
Are you insinuating Big Pharma was conspiring with the Progressives to add opioid coverage to Obamacare? Get low income voters addicted to opioids so they keep voting for Democrats in order to protect Obamacare? If so no argument from me.

Per the morning conversation on operating environments, when we started our little shop in 85, I spent about half of our startup cash on a Motorola box that ran UNIX with a couple used Sun terminals. By the late 90s that had evolved to a FreeBSD on generic 386 towers where my (still) best code guy finally relented and migrated to what Henry refers to as LAMPS. So we were doing all that without me knowing that was a thing. :)
We had one commercial product that was an OS2/DB2 database again running on a generic 386 tower. It saved the railroads many millions, but it violated every IT sense of invading their territory so they usually ended up in a closet somewhere where they couldn’t find it. Many ran quietly for decades without ever going off line, or needing a tweak.
Posted by: Manuel Transmission | July 17, 2019 at 03:46 PM
I believe what is referred to as a moderate Democrat is what we call the GOPe.
I’ll venture a guess that the reduction in opioid overdose deaths has more to do with just about every first responder in the country having narcan than a reduction in abuse or any other “war on drugs” effort.

MT, reminds me of when I used to support a local bank that did its own check imaging, and they in turn contracted with several other local and regional banks to do their imaging.
The check imager was this huge monstrosity with about 8 different ADFs and platens (I can't remember who made the thing), but it all ran on a small, generic 386 running OS2/DB2.

Porch-my point is that the purpose of the so-called e-textbook in K-12 is actually not to be an e-book. That is what parents are led to believe so they fail to recognize the kind of shift james and I were discussing this morning on the previous thread.
A textbook makes content transmission instead of developmental change the focus in the classroom and that's NOT where any of these reforms are going. Textbooks are still purchased, but not used or they exist as an online resource but they do not function as text. They create a simulation that students will believe and the creators of the simulations actually brag at forums like iSTE about all the cause and effect relationships students can be led to believe so that they feel there is a need for fundamental change.
A parent who thinks an "e-textbook" is simply an electronic text will not perceive the shift. But teachers complain about textbooks as much as they do lectures.
I don't want any parent broadsided by the nature of this shift, especially since the ultimate bullseye is neurological change for political purposes using theories straight out of the soviet union. I wish I was exaggerating about that.
