Nate Silver's 538 has polling indicating post-debate changes in polling position. Unsurprisingly, Biden lost support and Harris gained it. However, more Biden supporters moved to other candidates than to Harris.
Personally, I was delighted to see Kristen Gillibrand's net favorable rating decline, although probably not by a statistically significant margin. Boo 'er off!

They started out looking pretty rough & tough, and then I said something (wish I could remember what!) that cracked them up.

John Adams on how we should remember Independence Day. “I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated, by succeeding Generations, as the great anniversary Festival. It ought to be commemorated, as the Day of Deliverance by solemn Acts of Devotion to God Almighty.
It ought to be solemnized with Pomp and Parade, with Shews, Games, Sports, Guns, Bells, Bonfires and Illuminations from one End of this Continent to the other from this Time forward forever more. You will think me transported with Enthusiasm but I am not. -- I am well aware of the Toil and Blood and Treasure, that it will cost Us to maintain this Declaration, and support and defend these States.
Yet through all the Gloom I can see the Rays of ravishing Light and Glory. I can see that the End is more than worth all the Means. And that Posterity will tryumph in that Days Transaction.”

Dad died a year ago, two days before his 98th birthday ... on the Fourth of July. On Facebook, my brother just posted a picture of the flag draped on his casket. Members of his company, of the 222nd regiment of the 42nd “Rainbow” Division, helped liberate and entered Dachow.
... and people, purposefully ignorant of history, duped by demagoguery, presume offense to both the flag and the military that protects both it and our liberty?
They would have us stand down so they can steal the freedom we have so strenuously defended?
Seriously?

Kind of like that telephone tax put on in 1898 because of the Spanish-American War, that has had more lives than Wile E. Coyote.

Jane, JMH and Narciso. And all of my JOM friends.
Several months ago, just before I was hospitalized back then. I injured my left foot doing a 5k.
I kind of rolled the left foot. 2 small bones had stress fractures. I limped along until last Thursday. I was with my son and had to walk 3 miles in the pouring rain. My foot took the brunt, the bones fractured and I got a "fracture blood blister" on the side of my foot. I had an appt for Tuesday to see the DOC. He sent me to the E.R..
It was infected and I had surgery yesterday a.m.
Thank you so much for your concern. God love you Jane!!!

JiB, I stayed up last night watching the rerun of Gauff vs. Rybarikova. Gauff looks really good. Incredibly cool under pressure, big serve, great shot-making. She has a decent chance at beating Hercog in the 3rd round, though Hercog looked pretty good dismantling Keys. But then she'll face either Azarenka or Halep, and that will probably be it for her.

Jack "I am on the flight path for thousands of brown pelicans who fly by in squadrons of 20 to 40 or more."
And if you substitute "brown pelicans" with "Gulfstream Jets", you would be describing my house on Nantucket. I joke that as I lose track of the days of the week as summer goes on, I can reset my internal calendar knowing that on Fridays they are always arriving (left to right), on on Mondays they are always leaving (right to left). OL,
Back in the day I flew in there hundreds of times. Once I came over by ferry, got to about 1/2 mile away and they made us go back (2 hours) because of the storm. My friends said: "Go take a plane" -
So like an idiot I did. It was a 6 person plane and I was in the co-pilot's seat. Scary scary conditions. When we landed the pilot turned to me and said: "I bet you are happy".
Sheesh. But for some reason I loved flying those little planes. Probably a 20 minute flight.

I wish you all were sitting on the porch in the woods with us. It is so quiet and peaceful. Mom and my sister drove back to NH this morning. We took them to the pub last night and half the TV screens had a soccer game and the other half had tennis. Gauff is very impressive.
Posted by: Marlene | July 04, 2019 at 01:56 PM
Capt,
Kiwi is okay, but she doesn't go out much and has a pool (or 2) on the lanai and one in the house. I have a frozen mat she sits on when outside. Neither one of us is getting enough exercise these days. She has medication and I give her CBD oil (which I also give me).
Birds of a feather I guess.

Old Lurker:
"Gus, once again the root cause of most human suffering is exercising when you don't have to. Like a 5K."
My feeling exactly. Plus, have you ever seen anyone running who looks happy?
I prefer to dig stuff up in my garden. You bend, lift, twist etc. the time away, and when you're done, you've got something abfab to show for it. The idea of an exercise class leaves me positively overcome with ennui. Unfortunately I've recently developed a taste for home made Irish Soda Bread, which is one of your better vehicles for butter, so I'm going to have to go back to tramping around in the woods again, soon. If I'm taking photos it doesn't feel like exercise. If there were a squash court next door, I might bestir myself to play, but I'd probably wind up in the deck chair next to GUS if I did at this point.
In addition to my father's flag, I also have my grandfather's rocking chair from the porch at Marblehead, which is unbelievably comfortable, with nary a cushion in sight.

Actually, the tennis match was on in the late afternoon when we were at the pub. What do you tennis experts think of Gauff? She is so young. Will she became the next Serena Williams or Tiger Woods.
Today is the first day of summer here as far as the heat. Scout is exhausted from the company. Also, the property owner at the end of the road (on the Penobscot) is having a big party. Her family owns a huge chunk of land on the river and she's been renovating the very rustic cabin. Scout barks at every car because he thinks they're turning in our driveway.

Sharp eyes, Captain! That's the only picture that I substantively altered.
Jane:
That was true of the 1st local Tea Party I went to in Winston-Salem, too. Not a plastic straw left behind. I remember that in DC, even where the trash cans were overflowing, people neatly placed their trash beside them. I'm not fond of large crowds, but I never once felt nervous there, even in the middle of an occasional crush. There were a couple of counter protesters who wondered freely amongst us, as well. After an experience like that, it was all the more stunning to hear the smears that came after, especially from what had been my own party.
Posted by: JM Hanes | July 04, 2019 at 02:13 PM
Gus - My friend did a similar thing. She had a knee replacement and a few days later fell injuring the opposite foot. They did not realize it was broken for several weeks. It's been quite a complicated recovery for her as many of the things they wanted her to do for her knee therapy were not possible with her foot. She's much better now and walking around Disney this weekend.
I hope you are back up, out and about very soon! Let us know if you get "sprung" tomorrow. At least you can watch all of the festivities today.
Posted by: Momto2 | July 04, 2019 at 02:13 PM
What do you tennis experts think of Gauff? She is so young.
I gave my opinion above, Marlene. Very impressive. I like that her parents are there together and making sure that she keeps her head together (unlike the train wrecks that a lot of prodigy families seem to be). Still, so many of these upstarts flame out (mentally) it's hard to say anything for sure.

What's the old joke? I get my exercise as a pall-bearer for all my exercise-obsessed friends.
But I should talk, as I either play tennis or go to the gym probably 6 days/week. Played 90 minutes of tennis this morning in god-awful heat and humidity. Probably not smart, but I've been very healthy and injury-free.

Dr. Lucy is a real sharp seismologist. She pulled no punches and downplayed the severity since it is outside the San Andreas and if in the desert the seismic wave is not the same as a 6.4 on top of bedrock. More liquefaction than shake rattle and roll.
