I wonder how many Somalis we have here in Nashville. I’m in this pizza place that stays open till 5 AM waiting on some wings.

Schwarz Pete comes in with his knit cap, obviously a Mohammedan. Says asalamalekumn to the Uzbek guy at the counter. How much is Islam uniting these disparate people’s in my own back yard? Like Catholicism in Long Long Ago Europe.

Maybe they do have some good qualities though. Some scantily clad degenerate looking white girl walked in. It looks like she has a Mariachi tattooed on her left hamstring and a mermaid on the right.

Had dinner with an old sailing/flying buddy who retired from Boeing. He found this new article on the Max8:

Mantran, I interviewed a software engineering candidate from Boeing last week.

One of his stated reasons for wanting out was a lack of staff and other resources to get his team’s work done. I asked if it was due to Max-based cash conservation. He didn’t claim to know either way, but I thought he suspected that was the case.

Boeing sounds like a mess at the moment.

Dave (in MA)

Somehow a toilet paper ad on Twitter following a Joy Reid retweet also seemed appropriate.

What is the derivation of the civic organization called a Township? I only ever hear about them in PA and MI. Every 9th grader in WY used to have to learn about Township and Range but there must be a The Rest of the Story.

Pin,

We have townships in NJ also. Something about different forms of local rule. I think NJ passed more than one law for municipal incorporation.

I'll go take a look.

Townships, what’s the deal with them? Are they towns? Are they ships? What marketing genius came up with that one?

Pinandpuller

Around here towns are incorporated and unincorporated.

https://www.njlm.org/644/Forms-of-Municipal-Government---New-Jers

https://cgs.rutgers.edu/sites/cgs.rutgers.edu/files/documents/resources/rc_munichart_formsgovt_2011.pdf

Township was the first form of municipal organization allowed (1798). The others arose later near the end of the 19th century.

NJ has a history of fractured municipalities. The original townships were quite large. Localized factions often broke off to form new communities.

I think the height of that was what prompted the new state laws on forms of municipal organization.

Englewood, the city I was born in, once ran from the Hudson River to the Hackensack River. West Englewood is now a neighborhood in Teaneck. The eastern part of Englewood is now Englewood Cliffs.

So the date when an area was first settled doesn't always match the date it was established or organized. Some may have started with one form of government than adopted another.

Politics were usually the reason for incorporating or splitting off. Either to keep something under control, or gain control.

It got so weird at times that one municipality, South Hackensack, consists of three unconnected pieces of land.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/South_Hackensack,_New_Jersey

This is a blow up of the included map:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/South_Hackensack,_New_Jersey#/media/File:Census_Bureau_map_of_South_Hackensack,_New_Jersey.png

Teterboro, which sits between the pieces of South Hackensack, is another weird municipality. It's mostly the airport and warehouses with very few residents.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Teterboro,_New_Jersey

At one time it was said that every one who worked in Teterboro had a job in its government. Very low property taxes and a job if you wanted one.

Pinandpuller

Does anyone believe that California is 72% White? Juking the stats with White Hispanics.

jim nj

Pin,

NY has a lot of that incorporated, not incorporated stuff. Incorporated, surrounded by unincorporated.

No idea how that works. Sewers and septic tanks? I dunna know.

Whats wrong with Township as a name? Think of a partnership and the idea is the same - you're all in the same boat, for better or worse.

Think where we'd be today if they called them mantowns?

jim nj

Pin,

The idea that whites are going to be overrun in the US is just silly.

The Hispanics, like the Irish, poles, Italians and many other immigrant classes will identify as white in a generation or two and have the same values.

jim nj

Pin,

I think an incorporated municipality can't have any more of its land confiscated by some political interloper.

And you want to talk about weird municipalities? NYC is composed of both five boroughs and five counties.

Just another quick aside on the diet thing, my wife has Lupus. She had a blood transfusion right after she was born. I thought that was one of the possible causes.

She used to take Quinacrin all of the time, enough to go live in a shithole country and not get malaria. She doesn't any more. She still goes to a rheumatologist once a year or so.

My understanding of fat vs sugar is your body runs better on fat. Sugar is kind of like E15 gas. It eats thru all of your gaskets.

Worse case scenario you go live in one of Trump's concentration camps and you can lose up to 25 lbs in three weeks, guaranteed!

very good Clarice,

This caught my attention as well "interests in hiking, bird watching, and fishing in designated drug-smuggling corridors do not outweigh the harm to the public from halting the government’s efforts to construct barriers to stanch the flow of illegal narcotics across the southern border.”

It seems self-evident that recreational activities do not trump [pun intended] national security issues.

Were we to subscribe to such an argument the Korean DMZ would be illegal also. Obviously people have a right to hike, bird-watch and fish in the DMZ.

The lower courts are abysmal, with poor logic for even considering such arguments.

That the Sierra Club and the ACLU could even raise such an issue against national security is bizarre.

I really wish the Supreme Court would stop the judge-shopping going on in the district courts.

anonamom

jimmyk, I had lunch at Leo's Coney in DTW Metro just yesterday. I was downtown two springs ago, for my cousin's daughter's wedding. That "revival" is still in the store-by-store stage there. It's house-by-house elsewhere. Check out the neighborhood surrounding the DIA (which we so enjoyed the morning we spent here before the wedding.)

You know what would really help?

Moving an entire Federal Department--say Commerce--there. Just as moving the Department of Transportation to the Navy Yard in DC kick started that area's explosive growth.

The infrastructure is there, for sure.

Be prepared to set Grant aside if you start Stoner. We all read it cover-to-cover in less than a day once we started. I'd never seen that around here before.
Then, tell me why that happened! ;-)

I've long thought "compelling" was an overused word---but it's all I can come up with.

Enjoy your time with your parents. Royal Oak is where the "cool kids" hang out. And "Detroit pizza" is now a foodie thing. My favorite was Shield's when I trained, and it's still in existence, but another one is what has the buzz. We are getting a Detroit pizza place here next month!

I was thinking of going downtown to Eastern Market and. Some other spots down there that were no-go zones when I was a kid.

jim nj

Pin,

I'm sorry to hear that your wife suffers from Lupus.

My uncle had Lupus also. They kept trying to describe it as a tropical infection he acquired during WWII.

It took forever to diagnose it correctly.

Ruined his life with all the uncertainty. the correct diagnosis didn't help either as there was no treatment. He didn't blame his wife for divorcing him. He thought she was better off without him.

One of his daughters also had Lupus, which might indicate it's hereditary.

He took Quinine regularly, like you would to
treat Malaria.

There is no cure for Lupus, only management.

Just after midnight on September 12, a Senegalese migrant was walking along Santa Teresa St. in the town of Reus, Spain. Suddenly, the Muslim asylum seeker spotted a homeless man lying on the sidewalk with his loyal canine companion at his side. Amom: My husband's roommate, who married my roommate (isn't that sweet?)

Never really thought about it, but that’s how it worked out for us.

Townships: I know nothing about the old designation in the colonial areas, but when we started the expansion out west, someone with a near genius inspiration laid it all out brilliantly.

If you think about it, laying down squares on a sphere is kinda complicated. So, what they did was survey a very long east-west ‘baseline’ and every six miles, set a pin. Do that on parallel six mile lines and you end up with 36 square miles (sections) in a perfect grid. That’s a township. Two sections (I forget which two) were reserved for schools. Of course, one section contains 640 acres in regular sub groups: 40, 160, etc. That’s how the homesteads were parceled out. “40 acres and a mule.” If you’ve ever driven down county roads out on the plains, in particular, driving N-S, you’ll often come to a stop sign where you have to jog over 50-100 ft to continue on. That’s the corner of a township.

Melinda

Much the same here, except for that bonus “feature” that only IL can provide, townships are used as an extra bond issuer and taxing authority, and is where they hide all the electoral laws.

Melinda

The answer - the ONLY answer, since Sullivan v NYT is still the law of the land and courts will do NOTHING to rein in the abuses of the MSM - is to play by their rules.

Investigate the MSM figures - reporters, editors, executives. Make all their sins public. Doxx them, and their spouses and their children. Make sure they have no secrets, no privacy, no public dignity.

Maybe if it's done to enough of them, they'll back off a little bit.

Ignatz Ratzkiwatzki

The interesting thing is, at least with every property I have ever encountered no township or section is ever the same size nor ever with the same directional bearings. Sometimes at the boundaries of townships or ranges* substantial fudging is done to fit the requisite 36 sections into the "square", as MT noted with jogs in roads. I've seen some sections 50% or more larger or smaller than the standard 640 acres to make things fit in the real world of geography.

*Township lines are east-west running latitudinal lines while range lines are north-south longitudinal ones. The approximate squares resulting from this grid are townships.
In my neck of the woods properties are located in relation to the Mount Diablo Base and Meridian with properties located by description as being part of, for instance, Township 8 North, Range 12 east from the MDBM reference point.
And nobody cares so I'll stop.

MissMarple2

Ignatz,

I had to learn all that stuff when I was in 8th grade, since Indiana was part of the Northwest Territory and laid out by surveyors when we became a state.

The main north-south street in Indianapolis goes smack dab through the center of the county and is called Meridian Street because it runs along one of the prime meridians.

There are 9 townships in my county, 3 per row, and all square, like the county.

Manuel Transmission

Iggy, your problem was they never finished the plan to bulldoze the Sierras flat. :) Never had that problem out in Nebraska.

Ignatz Ratzkiwatzki

Theoretically that shouldn't matter, MT, since a grid is a two dimensional system. So whether you're laying it on mountains or plains shouldn't make a difference. But in reality when the actual work was done not by satellites but guys in the brush with chains and, if they were lucky theodolites, and if not compasses, it's probably surprising they're as uniform as they are.
I had one property that I could never figure out. It was 160 acres shaped like a T and all the corners were set by the USGS. But when I read the caps they didn't match the USGS topographic map.
Finally figured out the official US Gubmint topo map had incorrectly shifted every section line on that map a quarter section west. Made a huge difference in the amount of timber on the property.
