Increasingly, I find myself thinking about everything we teach in terms of skills. In our real-world learning approach (which includes projects, internships, entrepreneurship, and other out-of-school learning experiences), we teach students how to do stuff, whether that means working in teams, writing an argument, producing documentaries, or using a laser cutter. In the course of developing and using these skills, they build content knowledge. Too often in traditional schools, we assume it works in the opposite direction. Flipping that relationship does two things: It elevates skill development within the curriculum and it pushes us to think in much more flexible ways about what content students should learn.

It is one way to get to Equity in results.

"They’re the reason there are directions on a shampoo bottle, & we should ignore them." - classic Trump. I wish people would take his advice.

I m reminded of the tulip mania described by Kindelberger when thinking of the Democrats. It is a combination of dissociative thinking and mania that keeps them going. There simply is no logic or pretense of veracity.A little bit of Munchausen, a dab of the Emperor Norton, a large pinch of Cultural Revolution.

The House violates its own rules of decorum in order to condemn the President for his decorum. We'll be hitting the dog days soon enough. I think I'll be stocking up on popcorn because it will inevitably get sillier.

I don't even understand that, Iggy. ;)

fdcol63, I started the same path. We were Netware early on and it was the only decent answer available at the time. But it just got so complicated and unhelpful.

It was only later on that we could jump ship. We are fortunate we were able to do so sooner than you could.

So someone has rediscovered the concept of comparative advantage.

Unseen on Trump’s master plan to defeat his political opponents. I like to refer to it as “4D Chess” since that term is a complimentary description of Trump’s grandmaster level of strategic thinking.

sbwaters .... part of the problem is that I worked for an integrator that did a lot of work installing and supporting LANs and systems in law offices and state associations.

The larger firms really, really loved their WordPerfect and Lotus Notes, and squeezed every last drop they could from their earlier outlays before they'd spend another dime on upgrading.

The wonder of the WI veto:

However, Evers used his line-item veto to change the language so that it authorized per-pupil spending of “…$654 in the 2018−19 school year, by $679 in the subsequent school year, and by $704$63 in each school year thereafter.”

More on the admissions scandal. https://www.latimes.com/local/lanow/la-me-college-admissions-usc-20190716-story.html

Found it interesting that the G'town student is suing to be able to withdraw and keep his credits. Apparently these schools want to be able to label caught students as "Expelled" on their records.

Hard for me to relate since the diva did all of her applications herself and we did not even know where all she was applying until she gave the names to her dad so he would know who should be charging her credit card and why. I raised my children that it is tacky to toot your own horn and as a result I only know how the diva is doing by checking her linked in page occasionally or when some honor society sends a mailing to the house.

I think that is taking the advice to extremes.

Yesterday Mr Pin posted this fascinating snip (I did not check his source).

In Charleston, South Carolina in 1860, 125 free blacks owned slaves; six of them owning 10 or more. Of the $1.5 million in taxable property owned by free blacks in Charleston, more than $300,000 represented slave holdings. In North Carolina 69 free blacks were slave owners.

(Source: Black Masters: A Free Family of Color in the Old South, Michael P. Johnson and James L. Roak New York: Norton, 1984.)

Fact 5: In 1860 only a small minority of whites owned slaves. According to the US census report for that last year before the Civil War, there were nearly 27 million whites in the country. Some eight million of them lived in the slaveholding states.

The census also determined that there were fewer than 385,000 individuals who owned slaves. Even if all slaveholders had been white, that would amount to only 1.4 percent of whites in the country (or 4.8 percent of southern whites owning one or more slaves).

The figures show conclusively that, when free, blacks disproportionately became slave masters in pre-Civil War America. The statistics outlined above show that about 28 percent of free blacks owned slaves—as opposed to less than 4.8 percent of southern whites, and dramatically more than the 1.4 percent of all white Americans who owned slaves.

I passed along Mr Pin's snip and got this back today.
Clearly slavery in the US is way more nuanced than the Prog storyline.

Anthony Johnson (b. c. 1600 – d. 1670) was a black Angolan known for achieving freedom and wealth in the early 17th-century Colony of Virginia. He was one of the first Negro property owners and had his right to legally own a slave recognized by the Virginia courts. Held as an indentured servant in 1621, he earned his freedom after several years, and was granted land by the colony.[1]

He later became a successful tobacco farmer in Maryland. He attained great wealth after completing his term as an indentured servant, and has been referred to as "'the black patriarch' of the first community of Negro property owners in America".[1]

Jane

"At least I can finally put my underwear on without sitting down:)"

The story about the black indentured servant sounds like a common theme in my paternal line.

They ended up in Tennessee as tobacco plantation owners after initially coming to Jamestown, some as indentured servants.

Unlike the Angolan, they didn't own slave, but had huge families instead. For example, my grandfather was oldest of 20, my grandmother oldest of 11.

Same with the generations from late 1700s and the 1800s except the survival rate was much lower.

Even though my grandparents moved North after my father was born, my dad and his younger brother spent most every summer as kids working on the farm, with lots of cousins, aunts and uncles.

The joke in Claiborne county is that every other mailbox has our last name on it.

GUS

What a coincidence Buckeye. I'm originally from Maryland, and my Mama used to tell me that I was black because of my high cheek bones.
