Being in Alaska calmed me down quite a bit. Even O'Hare and flying United didn't bug me as much as usual. There are still a few things I'm mulling over boring people with I encountered there, particularly the seamless interactions of aboriginal/indigenous people with relative outsiders. There was a piece in the Anchorage Museum of a tribal youth who accomplished a rite of passage by killing something and the SJW twitterstorm of ignorance he received. I think most of the locals have their priorities in order.
They got a sensible governor in Dunleavy, something they really haven't had in ten years, Parnell having turnout top man and Walker with a brainslug in him.
Re napoleon, from the winik sketch he was probably the most sensible figure that could emerge from the revolution
Capn, the natives in Alaska don't have a big enough footprint to be demogogued and made victims in the other 49 states.
Actually I think they do, GUS, but that's not how they roll. Many times after a pleasant encounter I'd wonder, much later because it didn't matter, what ethnicity they were.
There aren't enough people for any group to not have a footprint. Fairbanks reminded me of Canton in size and population.
Jane (at 1:05], we’re having a great time, sitting in the Old Course Hotel, looking over the 17th fairway of the Old Course, while watching Shane Lowry super-perform at Royal Portrush. And we'll be playing that course next Sunday!
Now off to the first dinner with our golf tour mates, with whom we’ll spend the next two weeks.
CH, I wonder if your calm comes from Alaska or from the benumbing effects of Proust! It's wonderful stuff, but it's such a mental workout it can be tiring--I've only done the first volume myself.
Catsmeat, maybe age and the thought of being a grandpa (best job in the world) has damped down his revolutionary fervor. Of course it could be reading Proust.
Probably both. Proust's writing, and the translation, is so dense that you ponder sentences (diagram that, sucker) for minutes just processing what he's saying. But the natural beauty of the state was likewise calming. On the two days that the skies were clear enough to see Denali, it was a constant looming presence that translated to me that all was well.
I ordered it after hearing an interview w a fellow who has written a book about how it has impacted his entire life since reading it---and everyone in our family has read it cover to cover in less than 24 from starting it.

The breach took place last weekend, on July 13, when a group of hackers going by the name of 0v1ru$ hacked into SyTech's Active Directory server from where they gained access to the company's entire IT network, including a JIRA instance.

Yesterday was the memorial service for Herb Meyer.
All in all, a splendid day for such a somber occasion. Friends who used to live up here flew in fairly early and we picked them up and had breakfast with another couple of pals who were attending the service.
The ceremony was at our local Catholic Cemetery across from the 'all the rest' out in the central valley on our rock pile. About 150 showed up including about a dozen immediate and extended family.
You might ask, why a Jew would be buried in a Catholic Cemetery? Well, Jill, his widow is Catholic and Herb had no problem having their kids raised Catholic, and Jill didn't want to have them buried across the street from each other, so that worked out.
One of my regular Friday lunch pals, Dan, who also is Jewish, gave a proper Jewish send off after the (red dot Indian) Priest gave the main one. Hey, it's a small island! Afterward, I learn that right after Dan and his wife moved onto the island, his wife, also Catholic, met Jill at church and quickly discovered they were near neighbors, so that turned out to create weekly dinners and Herb playing their piano, etc. etc. So, more than a few times, Dan and Herb are standing in the back of yet another church event as a couple of elders grinning at how they both ended up with Catholic families.
Afterward, we all repaired to our friend's place, the one that hosts the chamber music recitals, and had a chance to visit with the extended family. I had met, via email, Tom, Herb's son who helps run Ricochet (or did). He lives the farthest away in Quincy, and suffers, like us, with a very small circle of friends who you can talk openly about politics with. I filled him in on JOM, so he might choose to drop by.
Though seeing a-mom's post, maybe "Stoner" isn't a slog.
I did slog through all the volumes of Proust some 12 years ago. Best similes and metaphors ever. There was one I still remember on how a particular woman enters and moves around at a party, the metaphor being a ball on a pool table. As to getting more out of it, I found it helpful to read some commentaries and riffs off of it, such as Alain de Boton's "How Proust Can Change Your Life."
No disrespect to Herb, who was obviously a brilliant man, but being the only analyst to predict the collapse of the Soviet Union speaks volumes about the quality of the rest.
Good afternoon! We had thunderstorms most of the day,so I haven't gone online, knowing the rain would interfere with the sat internet. The storm brought in cooler air, yay! This morning I looked out the kitchen window and noticed the resident rabbit nibbling grass. I said to hubby,"I think something is wrong,he's not moving!" Hubby said,"put on your glasses, his ears are twitching!"
Yikes! It just so happens I have an eye doctor appointment tomorrow! :)
I was there on business in the early 80's and it was clear the entire enterprise was crumbling but the state dept functionaries who accompanied us couldn't see that, CH. Amazing.
Marlene, the weather people said that the front would move here and cause storms this afternoon, but so far we just have some clouds.
Daughter cut the front yard this morning and showered. Now she is off to Target for a particular brand of eye-liner.
I quit wearing most eye make-up except some shadow a couple of years ago. I can't see well enough to put it on without my glasses, and if I make the attempt and then put my glasses on, I discover how botched a job I have done, looking like Bette Davis's eyes in "What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?"
And there's an idiot at the Daily Beast who must be auditioning for the NYT. He's written a gutter piece slamming Mariano Rivera for his "far-right politics." Why? Mainly because he's a supporter of Israel, a Christian, and has served on a presidential council under Trump:
Beyond Rivera’s pro-Israel activism, even though he’s never publicly given his endorsement, the Hall of Famer’s actions make it clear his sympathies lie with the Trump administration, which has backed all manner of far-right policies when it comes to Israel. In 2018, Rivera was nominated for the President’s Council on Sports, Fitness, and Nutrition. A month later, Rivera appeared at the White House for a friendly photo op, and in March, he was part of the delegation sent to the opening of the Special Olympics.
There is footage from the original confrontation between the two, but that video hasn't been made available — yet. The police are investigating the matter, however, so perhaps we will end up seeing it soon enough. For now, Sparkes — who has seen the footage — says that, on it, you can clearly see that she comes up to him, and that she's berating him. In the end, he did call her a "lazy b-word," but he is open and honest about that.
In short, from the looks of it, it seems like we've got yet another hate-crime hoax going on here.
Will let you know whether the local station that was so eager to run this story and had the additional footage about mlk's birthplace is still covering it now that the lazy bitch has been shown to be the aggressor and a huge liar.
No disrespect to Herb, who was obviously a brilliant man, but being the only analyst to predict the collapse of the Soviet Union speaks volumes about the quality of the rest.
Which is exactly why the majority of the prognostications about what will happen with Iran should be taken with a grain of salt.
I doubt they have gotten better, more likely worse.
GUS, they try to disguise it by claiming that Netanyahu is "far-right," and their objection is to him, not to Israel. Of course what they want is some Israeli leader who surrenders unilaterally to Hamas and Iran.
There's a Youtube of Golda Meir 50 years ago, stating positions that are essentially identical to Netanyahu's today. Kind of like how JFK sounds like a Republican. It shows how far the whole world has shifted left over the years.
Jimmy, Golda Meir was from Milwaukee. The library at UW-MILWAUKEE, where my son attends is named for her.
The LEFT is GARBAGE. Each and every one of them.
I am convinced it is the result of a takeover of academia and the media. Hollywood followed along like lemmings.
I can remember when Sinatra, Peter Lawford, and the rest of the Rat Pack campaigned for JFK, and it was considered highly unusual for Hollywood to get involved in politics.
The old school TV guys had mostly been WWII correspondents, but that outlook went away after Vietnam.
The internet is driving them back a bit. I think that is why there was such hysteria with Trump's election.
That and the fact that a lot of them are guilty of crimes.

I believe President Trump has their number.
He has been a success throughout his life and doesn’t have patience for these good old boy clubs where everyone just likes to brag about how important they are.President Trump is interested in results and hard work is the only way to get there.
He won the election because he worked harder at it than Hillary.
He locked down Ohio quite early and then moved on to Michigan, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin.
Hillary was stupid.
Even after Bernie beat her in the primaries of Michigan and Wisconsin she still didn’t work to win those states. This time republicans hope to New Hampshire and possibly Minnesota.
That DB piece on Rivera originally depicted him standing on a mound made to look like a yarmulke, over an Israeli flag. They've since changed it, but LI caught the original.

That the local NBC unit was on hand for her "impromptu" little parking lot presser, which got blowed up real good, certainly makes one wonder if Stacy Abrams Advanced Marketing Team wasn't involved for the stagecraft. Any emails available prior to that event?

They got 500,000 pounds in legal aid from the British government. I wonder why.

Will let you know whether the local station that was so eager to run this story and had the additional footage about mlk's birthplace is still covering it now that the lazy bitch has been shown to be the aggressor and a huge liar.

rse,
The only way this will stop is if false accusers are made to pay. Lawsuits seem the easiest way.
I hope that not only is she sued, but so are various media outlets.

Supporting Israel is FAR RIGHT.
That's the game they are playing.
Supporting AMERICA HATERS OK. Supporting Israel is FAR RIGHT. It's the new game. They sit around a conference table and come up with lies.

Supporting Israel is FAR RIGHT.
Posted by: jimmyk | July 21, 2019 at 03:52 PM
Jimmy, Golda Meir was from Milwaukee. The library at UW-MILWAUKEE, where my son attends is named for her.
The LEFT is GARBAGE. Each and every one of them.
Posted by: GUS | July 21, 2019 at 03:57 PM
jimmyk,
I am convinced it is the result of a takeover of academia and the media.

In other words, they staged the crowd.

Congratulations to Bibi @Netanyahu on becoming the longest serving PM in the history of Israel. Under your leadership, Israel has become a technology powerhouse and a world class economy....
....Most importantly you have led Israel with a commitment to the values of democracy, freedom, and equal opportunity that both our nations cherish and share!

Theres an idiot...ni further statements needed, the officials trained at the Riga school as yergins put it, kennan bohlen et al were much more rigorous than the analysts in that era.

Durbrow and Dunn, substitute for bohlen the former was on the first envoys to south Vietnam instead of bankers like harriman or locklawed senators like lodge.

That the local NBC unit was on hand for her "impromptu" little parking lot presser, which got blowed up real good, certainly makes one wonder if Stacy Abrams Advanced Marketing Team wasn't involved for the stagecraft. Any emails available prior to that event?

Though I did get annoyed by the lady scientist getting all excited about "carbon" being consumed in the "benthos". I mean, it's an action movie. The carbon sequestration involved is negligible.
