The Federalist is pushing a communitarian vision just like templeton funds and david french pushes and actually so does Hillsdale's larry arnn if you actually read his books.

I have explained that the National Constitution Center in Philly has created a K-12 heroes curriculum that redefines freedom and liberty as communitarian concepts.

Did you guys know they have made a "Lady and the Tramp" remake using real dogs? The dog who plays Tramp came from a shelter in Phoenix.

All of the dogs (except possibly the cocker spaniel Lady) came from shelters and have now all been placed in permanent homes.

TLG mentions the Missouri Synod, and I know of the Wisconsin Evangelical Synod, the one my BIL is a pastor in.
The other large one is the Evangelical Synod, Wiki tells me, and there are 37 other denominations.

Anonamom, our Lutheran Church was part of the ELCA for several decades.

Our congregation was established in the 1950's by conservative ethnic Germans and Scandinavians in the 'burb that borders the OSU campus.

As the ELCA became more "progressive" the "powers that be" in the congregation pushed back. Because the church constitution required that we be a member of a Synod, they helped launch a new one:

https://thenalc.org/

I think a lot of congregations moved away from traditional Synods for similar reasons.

From the 11:40

What was Shaviv’s sin? He argues that the Sun is largely responsible for variations in the Earth’s global temperatures–on its face, a plausible view. But orthodoxy demands that we all pretend that carbon dioxide is a miraculous control knob that governs the Earth’s climate, to the exclusion of all other (often far more important) factors, despite ample evidence from the planet’s geological history. Forbes unfortunately knuckled under.

Forbes loses all credibility by caving on this.

MissMarple3

Buckeye,

I found one about 15 minutes from me which I think I will try this Sunday. It was founded by German immigrants in 1842 (although they now have a new building).

Here is an excerpt from the pastor's August message:

" Today we are told that truth is relative, up to each person to determine on their own. This is humanist nonsense, intended by Satan to destroy us by destroying the truth. Jesus didn’t just tell the truth, He is the truth. The truth is found in God’s Word; God’s incarnate Word. The truth revealed in the Bible is Jesus, the truth. Forgiveness, daily grace, life in heaven, are all results of the truth."

Rocco

Hi all, just want to thank everyone for your thoughts, prayers and advice. My MiL passed away yesterday afternoon. Hospice was great and yesterday morning the nurse listened patiently to my wife and her sister tell her how frustrated they were that they couldn't do more. The nurse assured them that their mother looked like she wasn't suffering and her intermittent breathing was normal. She'd stop breathing for 10-15 seconds and then start up again breathing hard to make up for the lost time when she stopped.

Both my wife and her sister are nurses and have been staying over nights to care for her. Two weeks ago my MiL wanted Kentucky Fried Chicken, so it was quicker than anyone expected.

I cancelled Forbes probably ten years ago for the same reason I dumped Business Week, Scientific American, and Popular Science. Already had dumped Time, Newsweek and US News. Kept WSJ for another five years then dumped it too.

This great falling away from the Catholic Church was prophesied by our Blessed Mother to a child named Lucia Dos Santos, at Fatima in 1917. Catholics don't have to believe in Private Revelation approved by the church, but may if they want to. Divine Revelation is inspired by Scripture and must be believed.

Although Fatima is approved by the church as Private Revelation, the church has never recognized the following passage. I believe it!

The work of the devil will infiltrate even into the Church in such a way that one will see cardinals opposing cardinals, bishops against bishops. The priests who venerate me will be scorned and opposed by their confreres … churches and altars sacked; the Church will be full of those who accept compromises and the demon will press many priests and consecrated souls to leave the service of the Lord.

I've decided to stay Catholic and fight for my church.

Indeed, rocco, its all spoken of in tevelatioms in 2 thessalonians, explicitly in other passages implicitly

I am so sorry for your loss. Glad you have your faith to help you through this.

My father said long ago that it is the message, not the messenger. We seem to be going through an especially crummy run of Catholic clergy of late. I most respect the nuns I work with. Smart, dedicated, passionate about the Word. Catholics don't necessarily church shop, but there are some priests who give great homilies that are worth traveling for.

Marlene - I'm glad your daughter is safely home. I chaperoned my daughter's choir trip to China several years ago and had much the same opinion. We went days without seeing the sun due to pollution. The children are adorable and well trained to behave in public. I was quite surprised at the conditions of the Bejing zoo. Their pandas were very dirty and didn't look healthy at all. The "American" hotel served strange selections for breakfast including green salads. Did she go to the Great Wall? We climbed the irregular steps for hours which led to a painful sacral flare-up that took weeks to heal. Wouldn't trade anything for the experiences. I know you will enjoy hearing all about it when she is rested!

I traveled to China roughly twice a year for over a decade, as we had quite a bit of business there. We did our part with balance of trade:)

I would stay an "American" hotels when possible because they would have eggs and bacon (kinda) and if I ate enough, I could survive whatever the rest of the day threw me.

However, one of the best breakfasts I had was picked up at a little roadside shack somewhere near Guangzhou. It was a bowl of broth and noodles with poached songbird eggs floating in the broth.

Actually was fantastic. Probably had some green leafy stuff in the broth too.

The Infamous Ignatz

Now, when you say poached...do you mean poached or poached or both. :)

Momto2

Buckeye - Songbird eggs - very interesting but that's probably illegal here. I ate all kinds of things that I had no idea what they were. When I was in Indonesia we had a British caterer named Wimpy's (not the old chain of diner's) and every breakfast was an Ulster Fry. You could also get porridge (oatmeal or cream of wheat) and pancakes but everyone chowed down on the Fry. It even had black Cork sausage. Best damn breakfast ever.

Lunch and dinner would always feature a "stodgy" pudding in lieu of pies or cakes. If you have never had a proper British pudding, you don't what you are missing:)

Speaking of mansions, the "East of Eden" mansion in Bar Harbor will be sold at auction on Sept.7. Contact Platinum Luxury Auctions with your bidder's fee of $250,000. The 1910 mansion has gone thru several owners and restorations. It is one of the few mansions that survived the 1947 fire and the demolitions of the 1960s and 1970s. The current owner is the Ruger family, the property having been owned by William Ruger,Jr. who died last year. (yes, that Ruger) It was first listed at $15M,then $12M so rather than adjust the price, the family decided on the auction.

Since I was young, I have always enjoyed reading a good almanac. (I have a feeling a few other JOMers here might share this quirk. They say Michael Barone read the Census when he was ten.) So I was excited to see in the new books section of my local library a new Almanac published by the National Geographic folks. It is such a collection of politically correct hooey, lots of sky dragon climate change bs and even too pages on human consumption of insects and how they can be made to appear more edible. It reads like a collection of Google doodles celebrating third world commie heroes bound together in a book. (I know the UN endorses this insect eating crap as well.) OL up thread posted how he had cancelled so many magazine subscriptions, as have I. Almost all the Hearst magazines, which includes Esquire and Popular Mechanics are Democrat propaganda rags, as is Smithsonian, Scientific American, National Geographic. I now go to the library and try to find books published before 1975 and read those for enjoyment.
