Celery with pepanut butter (and sometimes raisins) were staples at my grade school cafeteria, because they got those huge, 5-pound cans of peanut butter from government surplus.
My dad used to get some of those cans at the end of the school year when the cafeteria managers were cleaning out storage. THAT was the peanut butter you had to stir, because the oil was at the top. It was really good, though.
Also great for a family with 5 kids. We occasionally got raisins, too. Those came in plastic bags within 12 x 12 cartons. That is why every woman in my family makes oatmeal-raisin cookies as her first choice when baking. LOL!
The only thing I don't like about the Kaus article is he ignores completely the critical role Mike Cernovich played in opening that can of worms back up after it had been successfully sent through the MSM cannery.
Our civilization is standing on the precipice of a cliff. One million species are facing extinction by the end of the century. Insect populations, upon which we depend for our food, are collapsing. Jane, my brother got a free switch to fly from Ft Myers instead of Miami tomorrow for his trip to Italy. I do remember tracking down a hotel room for him last time, next to the airport in Ft Myers (and a flight / hotel near Baltimore for mom).
Just like mickey kaus was the only one was initially following john edwards little chickadee. Cernovich revealed the duplicitous miss fields true agenda, and he had a grip on laufman as cabal player, but he wouldmt provide the rosetta,

I will note my mom’s building switched their generator from diesel to nat gas after the last storm. My brother added a nat gas generator. I hope FL nat gas supplies use gas for their pumps.
The nice thing about a nat gas genset is how quickly it converts to propane. I would keep the conversion kit handy and have a few bbq bottles or a 100# bottle just in case.
Thanks. Unfortunately, I was so busy prepping for Dorian and Mrs. JiB's return tomorrow I had completely forgot about the game. I like Luke Fickle but I'd prefer more discipline on the D and less emphasis on the O. Offense will not win against [The] Ohio State University next week but a good D could at least make the score more mangeable.
Victory Bell game coming up. Miami hasn't owned since 2005.
TK, the downside of propane: capacity. The last storm, you could not get diesel, gasoline, or propane (as filling stations didn’t have generators). Nat gas supply was not interrupted. People react and switch.... is there enough pipe for that?
If I move to FL (I’ve resisted arm twisting so far), I may want solar / wind as well. At least that doesn’t have a supply problem after the storm (yeah... it only extends the other backups).
Henry, I'm of the mindset I won't need a hotel room. We can see if I'm a fool. What I really can't imagine is a house without AC. It's been 95 every night for a week.
For anyone who remembers those three professors who hoaxed peer reviewed journals of "gender studies" with papers on canine rape culture and translating Mein Kampf into modern feminazi language this is what happened to one of them Portland State U Punishes Professor For Proving Gender Studies Is A Joke
Jane, the lack of AC is why mom left town and my brother went to a hotel on the last one. My view, if you weren’t flooded or blown away last time, all looks good this time (for FL west coast). The nat gas generator hint might help next time.
The brief describes a number of possible outcomes if gender-confused people seek plastic surgery and opposite-sex hormones rather than receive help through therapy:
Seeking to align one’s mind with reality has always been the preferred method for treating dysphorias, such as anorexia, xenomelia (the feeling that one or more limbs do not belong), or transdisability (believing one has a physical disability that does not actually exist). No one would ever address an anorexic person’s needs by providing a low-calorie diet, diet pills and stomach stapling. Moreover, one of the most comprehensive scientific studies tracking individuals who underwent sex-reassignment surgery revealed that (1) the rate of psychiatric hospitalization was approximately three times higher for postoperative individuals than a control group; (2) mortality rates and rates of criminal conviction also increased; (3) suicide attempts were almost five times more likely than before surgery; and (4) the likelihood of suicide following surgery was 19 times higher than the control group, adjusted for prior psychiatric illness.
It's football season and I had forgot about this game. The precursor to Arena Football? My grandfather told my Dad that the Bears used our Model J football, the same one that was used in the Ivy League starting in 1880.
Jane, agree w henry--a generator will give you great peace of mind, and if you can use existing gas lines--you are in high clover! They run around 8K for one that will run your A/C. Lots of my neighbors have been getting them, both at home and up here in great white north. (snow eight months a year, not skin color)
My neighbor's up here has given ME enormous peace of mind, as it means we have running water during outages. She lets us backfeed off her side yard faucet, so what more can you want in a power outage, besides being able to flush toilets? (Before, we were drawing water out of hte lake--26 steps down the bluff.) It stays light up here til ten most of the summer, I have a gas stove, flashlights, candles--it's like one step above camping. I can deal.
If it does get in the 90s and you have no AC, remember to keep hydrated and get enough salt, pull all your shades and draw your drapes during the day.
Jane, if you do the generator thing... talk to your neighbors. (HOAs ftw). My brother coordinated installs with his entire street. Saved a couple grand each. (Plus his resale value goes up).
TK "You have a point about searching for propane with the masses. The whole thing would have to be set up early."
Spent a good bit of "engineer noodling" time on that design for Nantucket. No Nat Gas so propane is the only option. Trick was to balance the generator size to maximize run time for critical loads in a major outage under the assumption I could not get the tank refilled during the outage. While I would have liked a large enough generator to handle the peak loads in the house, that size generator would burn through the fixed supply of propane too fast. So I settled on a buried 1000 gal tank and a 20kw generator because that would 1) heat the whole house and run the refrigerators and ice machines, or 2) cool the rooms I use and run the refrigerators and ice machines for a continuous period of 10 days. (longer if the outage happened right after the tanks had been filled, or if the outdoor temps did not require max heat or max coooling. And the internet of course...
As Jack said about storm shutters...now that I have the belts and suspenders, they are never needed.
I was assured the AOC tweet was real, but I don't see it on her page.
Jane, if the power fails and you're hot go rest up at a chik-fil-A or a movie theater.
I was hearing there are basically models the gfs and the european, the former would have slightly lower winds because it would atay off the coast, does that make sense.
Stay away from Drudge. Look at Maue and Cowan. Even the top Mets at Weather Channel are encouraged to exaggerate for ratings. Wait until Jim Cantore puts on his waders.

How does one make it to adulthood without eating ants on a log?
For keto, it would be "ants on vacation" (no raisins).

Posted by: Ignatz Ratzkiwatzki | August 30, 2019 at 03:14 PM
Jane, the lack of AC is why mom left town and my brother went to a hotel on the last one. My view, if you weren’t flooded or blown away last time, all looks good this time (for FL west coast). The nat gas generator hint might help next time.
Posted by: henry | August 30, 2019 at 03:16 PM
Propane is a higher BTU gas for the same volume. The kit controls that volume so the genset doesn't run improperly.
You would add a tap and a pair of shutoffs right at the genset. Shut off the natural gas, replace the regulator componets, turn on the propane.
You have a point about searching for propane with the masses. The whole thing would have to be set up early.

Is AOC a parody of a human?
If the power is out for a week, how are your electric cars going to get charged, moron?
A gas station could run a generator and pump gas.

It's football season and I had forgot about this game. The precursor to Arena Football? My grandfather told my Dad that the Bears used our Model J football, the same one that was used in the Ivy League starting in 1880.

Ig, “used to be transgender “? What does that mean? It’s not as if genitalia were LEGO pieces you can swap back & forth.

Posted by: anonamom | August 30, 2019 at 03:32 PM
Jane, if you do the generator thing... talk to your neighbors. (HOAs ftw). My brother coordinated installs with his entire street. Saved a couple grand each. (Plus his resale value goes up).

Jane
Why worry?
If the storm is powerful enough to knock out the power, likely to be a breeze:)

Jane, if the power fails and you're hot go rest up at a chik-fil-A or a movie theater.

We gave up our generator to ocean salt corrosion. So, if I get an outage I will live with it. Mother Nature taketh and giveth.
Jane, why do think the SW coast is in peril?

Ig, I'd be curious to know when he left FBI, and as an assistant director, what knowledge he had of FBI malfeasance that he never blew the whistle on.
Odd how nobody actually in the FBI comes forward, isn't it?

An Air Force question: A flight of B-2s are in the UK, apparently doing a tour of sorts. I assume that UK tankers can refuel the B-2?
But I learned an RAF officer has been assigned to Whiteman flying the B-2. Why would that be done?
