Vacationing Chris 'Fredo' Cuomo captured a news cycle by, well, threatening to throw it down some stairs.
It's August and this is SO much more fun than writing about Jeffrey Epstein, Orange Man Bad, mass shootings, gun laws, tariffs, Hong Kong protestors about to be massacred, or most news, actually. (I saw a tweet today: "Breaking News will continue until morale improves.")
The raging controversy - is "Fredo" an ethnic slur with specific anti-Italian connotations, or just an off-the-shelf insult suitable for any weak, underachieving sibling like Fredo Cuomo?
Not really a tough call - before dropping 25 f-bombs and REALLY leaning into his DeNiro/Pacino Mafia thug impression, Cuomo explained the offense:
CHRIS CUOMO: No, punk ass bitches from the right call me Fredo. My name is Chris Cuomo, I’m an anchor on CNN.
Fredo is from The Godfather. He was that weak brother. And they use it as an Italian aspersion. Any of you Italian?
Please. The idea that "Fredo" implies Italians are class-less Mafia thugs didn't seem to bother him. Although he probably hears "Fredo" a lot, both on-air and In Real Life, so he might be especially sensitive to it.
The Captain has more.
Donald Trump Jr.
@DonaldJTrumpJr
Hey @ChrisCuomo, take it from me, “Fredo” isn’t the N word for Italians, it just means you’re the dumb brother. 😉
This is the most epic tweet that Don Jr could possibly ever make, and is quite possibly the best tweet ever composed by a human. Don owes Fredo sooo many thanks for giving him this opportunity.
Posted by: hrtshpdbox | August 13, 2019 at 11:46 AM
Chris is butthurt because Fredo (Chris) is the incompetent and weak brother of the more powerful and connected Michael (Andrew). And they both owe their positions to their father, Vito (Mario).
Agree, hrt, that was classic. People have called Don Jr and Devin Nunes "Fredo" on CNN, even on Cuomo's own show.
Chris's own stupidity is going to hang the nickname on him forever.
Bonus! Yesterday was John Cazale's birthday.

John Cazale was a very fine actor. I'm not denigrating him, I'm just pointing out that this happened on the birthday of the actor who played Fredo.
Posted by: Porchlight | August 13, 2019 at 12:10 PM
Ok, he's the actor who portrayed Fred's.
My low pop culture IQ strikes again! :)
From IMDb
His final film, The Deer Hunter (1978), was filmed whilst he was ill with cancer. He was in a relationship with his co-star, Meryl Streep, whilst filming The Deer Hunter (1978), whom he met when they both appeared in the New York Public Theater's 1976 production of Shakespeare's Measure for Measure.
Controversy occurred during the filming. While the studio was unaware of his condition, the director, Michael Cimino, knew about it. As Cazale was evidently weak, he was forced to film his scenes first. When the studio discovered he was suffering from cancer, they wanted him removed from the film. His co-star and girlfriend, Meryl Streep, threatened to quit if he was fired. He died shortly after filming was completed.

Sorry, Jim, I shouldn't have been so facetious about it, as there is nothing to celebrate about Cazale's death. It's just such a perfect coincidence that the meltdown occurred on his birthday.

According to Rush, the guy who called Cuomo "Fredo" thought it was his real name. Apparently he heard all about him on Rush, and then ran into him at dinner. If you listen to the audio, he was pretty surprised at Fredo's response.
I assume the NY Gov now knows he will never lose that name. Oh and also Fredo has sat by quite contently as his guests on his show has called Trump that many times.

Cuomo was interviewed by Curtis Sliwa on his AM 970 radio show in January 2010 about whether his brother Andrew might seek the Democratic nomination for governor.
Sliwa said he dubbed the Cuomo family “la Cuomo Nostra.”
“There is a group of people — politicos — who always hint they might run, but not necessarily plunge all the way, and they are members of la Cuomo.”
“Who am I, then, Fredo?” Cuomo asked in response.
“Yes, exactly,” Sliwa said. “So you better be careful that your brother Andrew doesn’t kiss you on both cheeks and then all of a sudden they take you out on the middle of the lake and where’s Chris?”
“He kisses me plenty because he’s a great big brother,” Cuomo said.

Guide to Segregation in Federal Prisons See B.O.P. Program Statement 5270.07 on Inmate Discipline and Special Housing Units
There are two types of segregation outlined by the Bureau of Prisons: disciplinary and administrative detention.
Protective Custody The following categories of inmates may be considered as protection cases: 1) Victims of inmate assaults 2) Informants 3) Inmates who have received pressure to participate in sexual activity. 4) Inmates claiming to be former law enforcement officers, informants, or others in sensitive law enforcement positions, whether or not there is official information to verify the claim. 5) Former guards, dog caretakers, or others in similar positions in state or local correctional facilities. 6) Inmates who refuse to enter the general population because of alleged pressures from other unidentified inmates. 7) Inmates who will not provide the reason for refusal to return to general population. 8) Inmates who the staff has good reason to believe are in serious danger of bodily harm. Inmates must indicate on a placement for that they are requesting protection or are agreeing with the need for separation for protection reasons. Inmates who do not request or do not agree with their placement are to have their status reviewed by the warden or a designee within two working days of placement to determine if continued protective custody is necessary. A formal hearing is to be held within seven days of placement.

Mrs. hrt and I loved Goodfellas in the theater, but the couple we went with walked out because the profanity was too much for them - and then the people in front of us got up and walked out muttering that the movie was overlong!
I doubt I could watch it now, though, as the sight of De Niro sort of ruins my whole day.

Of course Althouse defends Fredo. Perhaps she was unaware of the history pointed out above. Not to mention that Fredo also lied about Nick Sandman. The great Laslo has the appropriate response in comments: "Althouse's disability to distinguish between Trump's Tweets and Cuomo's Tantrum is a strong example of why a liberal woman should never be elected President."
Note his use of "disability" rather than "inability."
Posted by: jimmyk | August 13, 2019 at 01:50 PM
Marlene, I have just about the same story - I (an Italian-American) wanted to name our first daughter Antonia, but Mrs. hrt did not like the idea of "Toni" being the likely nickname - and then, the Italian doctor who delivered her (in an Army hospital in Germany) chimed in with "No, no, no, Antonia is a terrible name". So my daughter Sara probably dodged a bullet there.

Trump has been playing around with saying he might support a red-flag law - and then in one single tweet, he just destroyed the entire basis for passing red flag laws. Cuomo made a public, documented, threat of violence. Under almost any Red Flag law contemplated, that will be grounds for having a swat team raid his house that night. Do libs still want to pass that law, knowing how it's going to be used?

Jane and anyone else who hasn't seen the movies: drop what you're doing and watch Godfather I and Godfather II (skip the execrable III).
Don't read any more of this thread or the internet in general until you've watched them - so you can avoid spoilers.
I'd say those films are two rare examples where the movie is better than the book. The books are kind of trashy and not that well-written, IIRC (but it's been awhile). The films are fantastic with a lot of subtlety I didn't notice in the books.
There isn't a better time. In fact I might take my own advice tonight.

Gritty (hate that word but not finding anything else appropriate) locales. Other than Mitchum, most of the actors are obscure. Criterion reissued it and it looks terrific. Mitchum is so good you totally forget you're watching Robert Mitchum, which isn't easy, for me anyway.

When Howie Carr tries to imitate Lurch, he does more of a bad Thurston Howell III, and refers to Tuhrayzuh as "Lovey". His Billy Bulger impression sounds like Dr. Smith from Lost in Space.
