Vacationing Chris 'Fredo' Cuomo captured a news cycle by, well, threatening to throw it down some stairs.
It's August and this is SO much more fun than writing about Jeffrey Epstein, Orange Man Bad, mass shootings, gun laws, tariffs, Hong Kong protestors about to be massacred, or most news, actually. (I saw a tweet today: "Breaking News will continue until morale improves.")
The raging controversy - is "Fredo" an ethnic slur with specific anti-Italian connotations, or just an off-the-shelf insult suitable for any weak, underachieving sibling like Fredo Cuomo?
Not really a tough call - before dropping 25 f-bombs and REALLY leaning into his DeNiro/Pacino Mafia thug impression, Cuomo explained the offense:
CHRIS CUOMO: No, punk ass bitches from the right call me Fredo. My name is Chris Cuomo, I’m an anchor on CNN.
Fredo is from The Godfather. He was that weak brother. And they use it as an Italian aspersion. Any of you Italian?
Please. The idea that "Fredo" implies Italians are class-less Mafia thugs didn't seem to bother him. Although he probably hears "Fredo" a lot, both on-air and In Real Life, so he might be especially sensitive to it.
The Captain has more.
So,
The autopsy shows Epstein's injuries are more common in homicides than suicides. Not unheard of in suicides, but many changes in that determination have happened after the autopsy.
The cop who left the cell was replaced 2 doors down. I wonder what time. Inmates heard Epstein screaming - except for the cop. The cop is accused of killing 4 other people - so what did he have to lose? And what did he have to gain?
Hmmmmmmmmm

That one hits close to home for me!
I don't see how on earth the city or county can possibly justify that, and I can't imagine how any sane court could uphold it.
But I'm sure a court will uphold it anyway.

Re: Epstein's autopsy: "A break to the hyoid bone (which sits in the front of the neck as opposed to being attached to the top of the spine) is more common in cases of strangulation than suicide by hanging. One medical study of suicidal hangings cited in the report found that the hyoid bone was broken in only 16 of 264 cases."

How far are you off 80, box?
Looks like I'm about 65 miles south of it, Cap'n.
Ok, are you closer to the turnpike? The point I'm trying to make is if you're not too far to the east, like beyond State College, I could probably meet up with you on a crisp fall day at some place for lunch and then go back home.

Porch,
I quit watching Brett Baier's show after that debate where she attempted to ambush President Trump.
Why?
He made a big deal the day before the debate talking about how they had been rehearsing all of their questions for days.
And the day after the debate he was PROUD of it. I therefore believe he was in on it, and I quit watching his program.

Jane, the plot thickens! But I still don't see a homicide...yet! There's no doubt in my mind that those cell doors were locked and secured on the midnight shift. For another con to kill Epstein, he would have had to pop his locked cell door open from the inside, and that's a possibility, it's been done where I worked. But then he'd have to pop Epstein's door open from the outside to get at him and I'm having doubts about that, but it is a possibility. With the guard sleeping, maybe. But with cameras covering all the common areas the killer would have known he was being recorded. Now if those cameras weren't working...

How about the guards were never even sleepy, so excited were they by the large sums of money Epstein had paid them for looking the other way, or which Clinton had paid them for looking the other way, or which the Royal Family had paid them for looking the other way. Any "investigation" that doesn't dive pretty darn deep into the personal lives of everyone stationed there that night is just a sham investigation.

From 2016.
One thing's for sure: Upset candidates can't console themselves by putting the dough toward a new yacht and sailing off to recuperate. The Federal Election Commission has strict rules about what federal candidates can and can't do with leftover campaign money, and the biggest directive is that they can't pocket it for personal use.

Meanwhile, people were lining up at dawn on Wed. for a Thu. night Trump rally in Manchester in an 11K capacity arena, and the police are going to have to close roads to deal with the spillover crowds.

The fake Indian was in Franconia,so there were probably many out of staters at her event. If the number of out of state cars that hubby saw at Baxter yesterday is any indiction, then the NH White Mountains must be full of tourists.
If you are familiar with Manchester,Elm St. is "Main St." The south end of Elm St. is probably blocked to traffic. There are already protesters near the venue. The NH DNC is encouraging people to "stand against hate" or something. *eyeroll*

SJW rule (against single sex organizations) tossed at Harvard (by a judge):
“It is certainly plausible that Harvard’s purported ideal of the ‘modern’ man or woman is informed by stereotypes about how men and women should act,” U.S. District Judge Nathaniel Gorton wrote in Friday’s opinion, citing the interview with Khurana (below). “Withholding benefits from students who fail to conform to such stereotypes violates Title IX.”

Well I still maintain the first mistake was giving him a cellmate. Everyone seems to think that's ok, it's not. Why would you put such a high profile inmate at risk of being assaulted by a cellmate? He should have been isolated in a single cell away from dangerous cons. I've read that his lawyers were trying to get him moved to another jail after the first attempt. I bet they know what was going on with him! To put him back in his old cell baffles me?
And I agree with hrt, investigate everything and everyone including the inmates financial accounts in that jail. They're usually allowed to keep a couple of hundred in their accounts to buy stuff from the prison store or canteen as we called it. It could be more for jail inmates awaiting trial. Check the cops account, was there a difference in the usual amount in his account?

One last point and I won't bore you anymore with my thoughts. I had a lot of experience dealing with high profile inmates. Some of the things the most notorious was accused of doing to toddlers, is too graphic for me to describe here. I should also state the I believe he's innocent, but we kept him alive while we had him and he never had a cellmate. It was policy. The other sex offenders all had cellmates in the PC Unit but not him. I can't believe they put him in with a cop accused of killing four, what were they thinking?

It doesn't look as if the rule was tossed, henry. From the article it looks as if Harvard's motion to dismiss was denied. Definitely a victory for the plaintiffs, but as Yogi Berra might say, until you've won at trial, you haven't won at trial.

Rocco, I'm sure you're correct about protocol, but IMO your mistake is to assume protocol was being followed.
It's a little like Andrew McCarthy talking about the FBI and DoJ after Spygate began to come to light. "It couldn't be X because that's not how the FBI operates."
The only question is how high up it goes.

So here's a question.
Why is pretrial detention, such as Epstein was in, such a shithole and treated as a punishment?
Granted that Epstein was unquestionably guilty, and I have no sympathy at all for him or his fate, but in the eyes of the law he - and everyone else in that jail - was still innocent of the charges against him until his trial and (presumed) conviction - what grounds are there for there for the government making their lives a living hell when they are not (yet) felons?
