I thought this was Share Your Opinion Thursday.

Narciso

So this is a poser, as the brits say a sloppy hanging or a very neat strangulation.

https://www.lawliberty.org/2019/08/14/the-battle-for-hong-kong/

Interesting account from a US professor in HK joining up with an es-student to march.

It reads a little like a Michael Yon piece as it's up close and personal.

"if china goes into the dumpster, what's the economic impact on us?"

It was argued yesterday, I forget who, that Trump had largely decoupled us from China, at least to the extent possible. However, Europe and others might suffer.

Is it Thursday already? Oh, it's after midnight. No, today is be polite to your neighbor Thursday. The other one is next week.

More seriously and on a personal note. I would like to thank everyone on the list for helping me to be mentally stronger than I used to be.

I've told you my history and being able to be open about it with you about it, with out being judged, has been enormously helpful.

The best thing I have done in recent years was to stop lurking and begin commenting.

Since then my PTSD is for most purposes gone. I've adapted beyond that. No doubt that in some ways my mind is permanently re-wired from that, but I am in charge again.

Last month I stepped down from 40mg of citalopram (Celexa), for depression, to 30mg, without noticing a difference. Monday, I stepped down to 20mg and we will see how that goes.

Selective Serotonin Re-uptake Inhibitors, like Celexa, have side effects. I was noticing them more than the depression. I began to wonder if my depression was permanent, or situational.

I mean earlier in the decade enough happened to me to depress anyone. I think that time is gone. I think it was situational depression more than anything else. If I'm right, my goal now is to go drug-free.

But it hasn't escaped my attention that the stress level on JOM has grown enormously recently.

I would humbly ask each of you to support one another as you have done for me over the years.

Pinandpuller

Before I jump back into the thread and read the actions, reactions and hot takes let me tell a story:

Once upon a time, I arrived over here looking for mr narciso who was deported from Patterico.

Right after I arrived GUS immediately started peppering me with questions kind of like a job interview. I actually knew of GUS from his driveby's at Patterico and I actually took to his style even though I didn't totally understand it. Eventually he would become one of my best friends in the world.

When I started posting I may have gotten a little overenthusiastic about copypasta. I know I did. That was before I mastered memes (imo). Frankly, I'm more of a one liner kind of guy anyway.

At a certain point Mr Threadkiller made a comment referring to me as "Pinandpagefiller."

Word play is sort of up my alley (imo). I was maybe a little offended but it's kind of something I might say myself so how could I really get mad? I actually thought about my style and tightened it up (imo).

Now I'm the kind of person who doesn't really like mushrooms but if there's a few on a pizza I might not really notice. If somebody puts a bowl in front of me I'm definitely not interested and I might get irritated.

So I understand how Mr Threadkiller might get crabby if all he sees on his breakfast tablet are mushrooms. I even understand that he might wish to give his opinion to the cook.

I think I have demonstrated that I will consider constructive criticism. If people wish to offer the opinion that my links are uninteresting or annoying that's fine. As it stands now though, you can't convince me that Mr Theadkiller didn't make his opinion sandwich out of unfilleted Nopales

I believe that the way he offered his opinion was designed to elicit a response, and it did. He's had a bad spell recently with his leg so maybe I should have let the whole thing slide, but I didn't.

That's about the state of things as I see them. I don't consciously want anyone who posts here to stop or go away. In the same light, I'm not going anywhere as far as I know, but I will try to be more mindful of Real Life and what might be going on there.

I might just give myself a self imposed time out and come back in the afternoon as is my habit.

I think, on first pass, that is correct. I think, always a dangerous process, that the US is least exposed to a failure of the Chinese economy.

Which countries businesses that have significant investments and profits in China would be impacted heavily.

Anyone who had loaned money anywhere in China would be impacted.

Uncertainty drives investors nuts. In the face of uncertainty you move to a safer thing.

I think that is why the US bond yield curve is inverted at the moment. In the past, that was a US issue, that indicated a likely recession, but with foreign money seeking a safe haven, it's more of an international flaw, than a signal of recession.

Demand in the US bond market has risen, not in the US so much, but primarily to foreign demand that can't figure out where else to invest safely.

jim nj

PIN,

I can accept that. I hope TK can also accept that.

You'll no doubt remember I told Gus to ease off on you and now you're best fiends.

So ease off TK.

All of us have been highly stressed by the latest BS.

I'm really surprised I'm trying to be a peacemaker. That was a normal behavior for me before 9/11. After that, most of what i felt was rage and anger. Maybe I'm back where I used to be. A diplomat.

I, for one, am glad that you post here so often, jimnj. I am also so glad that the late daddy convinced you to come to that fateful March meet-up. The Lord works in mysterious ways as that whole traumatic process may have had a beneficial effect on you. As I mentioned on the JOM FB page, I have had a bad time on social media lately. It troubles me that the tone gets dark here, but your posts are incredibly informative and hope that you continue to do so.

Sen. Corey Booker needs to answer for this.

Personally, I think the removal of lead-based paint from homes is a scam.

Lead comes into most homes via the water supply. And decades of use of tetra-ethyl lead as an anti-knock component of gasoline. Those air-borne particulates landed on window sills in many urban environments.

As skeptical as I am, almost every safety regimen is manipulated with PR campaigns that obscure the truth.

There are homes in the US that can't be re-built economically because of lead paint and asbestos.

Peter,

Meeting you, jimmyk and daddy was definitely a high point in my life, it was like meeting life-long friends for the first time.

Pondering daddy's death was like re-visiting 9/11. As much as I would have liked to change the outcome of each event, I came to realize that neither was possible.

As saddened as I was at daddy's death it was cathartic for me. Nothing I could have done.

In a day and a half, daddy had more influence on me than any other for years before.

My PTSD was in remission before meeting daddy, but I didn't want to visit certain sites and touch off bad memories. Daddy understood.

I was in a funk for weeks after daddy died. I memorialized it with my travels with daddy commentary, And all that time I think he helped me get past the last of the PTSD.

9/11 and daddy. What could I do to change these things? Nothing.

After weeks of thinking about daddy, I think that's when I came to the end of my PTSD.

I stopped asking myself questions that had no answers.

MissMarple3

Henry,

My radio news had the Philly mayor on, going on and on about how we have to get guns out of the hands of criminals, etc. etc.

Meanwhile, the shooting outside of the VA in Chicago was done with a rifle stolen from a gun store in New Whiteland, a town about 10 miles south of Indy. Serial numbers were matched.

We do not have any verified source about those broken bones in Epstein's neck. Since the story surfaced in the Wahington Post, I am concerned that this is simply a way to get blame shifted to Barr.

The body has been claimed but no one says by whom. I remain cautious.

anonamom

pin, FTW at 2:23!
Let's hear it for adult behavior, and great graciousness today!

And jim nj definitely first runner up, for his 2:21.
Especially this:
I would humbly ask each of you to support one another as you have done for me over the years.

Let's try to do that. Everybody is here for a reason--some because they are deeply closeted in their offline lives--some can't even share what they share here with their spouses! (Yes, I canNOT get past that. My reaction to matt's post the other day about the woman asking him off the bat about his politics was "Good! Why waste your precious time with somebody whose values obviously are so different, or doesn't understand basic econ?
No offense intended to anyone's otherwise incredible spouse.)

anonamom

jim nj--I am SO HAPPY to read of your successful-to-date wean--and you obviously are in good hands, and know slow is the way to go--that you can get rebound symptoms that make you think you "need" the drugs.
You need good food, movement in the outdoors, social support, maybe even ritual. (You can sit in a pew even if there's a Marxist pope, even if you don't think Mary really was assumed bodily into Heaven. Yes, today is August 15, a Holy Day of Obligation! But the repetition of prayers you've know since childhood has a meditative, centering, calming, connecting, healing effect. And I don't think effects libido!)
(How do you think al those women dealt with eight, ten twelve kids without totally losing their minds??? DAILY MASS!)

Those drugs don't just have side effects--your remark a few months ago about libido almost made me post that those drugs aren't helping, likely causing--but WAY more scary than that--the long term use of them is one great big uncontrolled human brain experiment.

NOBODY has any idea what happens w long term use.
People are starting to notice early onset dementia in people in long term SSRI users. It may be true/true unrelated, but what if it's not? What if they CAUSE dementia???

Just yesterday I read an article about a study showing the Adderal class of drugs affects the volume of white matter in kiddos. There's another unproven -or-long-term-safety drug that is being given to all kinds of people for what I call "cultural" issues.
Montessori based schools don't expect kids to sit at a desk for even 20 minutes! The one my kids first went to had a door out from every classroom--the kids were EXPECTED to be outside during school time, as need.
But most standard ones want six year olds sitting for two or three hours, and if they can't--let's drug them? Really???

So it sounds like someone made a wish with Epstein's hyoid bone.

Not remotely on-topic, but I'm reminded of Shannan Gilbert, a Craigslist hooker who died wandering the brush along the ocean on Fire Island after running from a John's house. The search for her body led to the discovery of the "Gilgo Four", four other Craigslist hookers who had been strangled and left in the dunes by the side of the road. When they finally found Shannan some months later (official cause of death "undetermined"), she was missing her hyoid bone.

Interest rates are higher in the US than in Japan and Europe. So if you can borrow at the low interest rates (in Yen and Euros), buy dollars and invest them at the higher US interest rates. It's easy money.

Easy money except for the 100% currency risk, which can easily offset your gains in the blink of an eye - laying off that risk costs money as well. The "problem" that roils the markets now, I think, is that rates are rock-bottom (or even negative) all around the world - no global easing can take place if economic doldrums were to be fought off.

Listening to the television chatter yesterday, where it's certain we must have a recession because the last five times the trader geeks put the 10-yr under the 2-yr a recession happened - it's silly, imo. That kind of "signal" always works until it doesn't, and five incidences is no kind of sample size.

hrtshpdbox

I'm really surprised I'm trying to be a peacemaker.

Yes, you got it wrong somewhere along the line, it's being a cheesemaker you wanted.

Pondering daddy's death was like re-visiting 9/11.

It had an effect on me. I had started "talking" to him a bit here for the first time, probably, since I've been here. I'd say something, he'd reply, or vice versa. In fact, in the last thread he posted on I had posted as well, there was some friendly exchange, I think. Then, as happens with me, something happened on the thread where I didn't want to read that thread anymore, and I didn't - I picked up with the next thread. And that's where I found out what happened, then watched everyone here be the group that they are, and which I'm not part of. So that leads to some reflection, of course, and thoughts. I didn't post for two months, and no one noticed. And it's been instructive to me, in a way.

Melinda

hrt-

It's not that Central bank rate cuts can protect the public from that, it's that the transmission of those cuts might not ever make it even part way to the general public. That it's become obvious in the last 12 years is the part that everyone has to price in.

hrtshpdbox

Melinda, I see an inversion as just an extreme example of the already foolish "flight to quality" phenomena which, long-term anyway, is always wrong. Just as a cause-effect, I can't see where rates that are pretty much flat across the board is something that augurs or causes a slow-down - there's just too many variables and trader noise in there, and too little logic, to draw conclusions about it.

hrtshpdbox

But, Melinda, yes I agree - a stimulus that doesn't yield results on the ground is futile.

And nobody - NOBODY - will suffer ANY consequences at all for this. Not the drug companies that pushed this crap. Not the school bureaucrats that encouraged/bullied parents into drugging their kids for the crime of being normal kids. Not the psychologists and psychiatrists who went along with it all and added their "expert" and "elite" endorsement to the whole thing.

NOBODY.

Jimnj, re. lead and asbestos, the thing is in most cases if you leave them alone they’re harmless. Obvious exceptions are things like kids eating old paint chips.

Flint’s problem wasn’t the lead pipes per se, but their move to a more acidic water source that stripped the oxidation and mineral buildup that kept the lead from dissolving into the water.

Mr. President, every male between 20 and 60 in north Philly has a long and dangerous criminal record.

I have a British friend who is a boxing fan who insisted on going to see Joe Frazier's former gym which is (as I recall) basically right where this happened yesterday - on Broad St, north of Temple (where two of my three kids went). The "Inversion Indicator" on the curve was a few basis points away from its tipping point, so a little "panic" would probably drive it over, at midnight, when it's such a thin market, a little bit of cash would be nothing to tip that domino over. That's the technical part.

What's been going on, in my eyes, has been a superb FusionGPS led effort to get the Fed to go with a 50bp cut that actually was only 25 bp. Someone, and I definitely have my ideas as to who it might be (not a household name at all), wanted, if not needed, that 50 bps and has been willing to spend A LOT of cash on PR to push "The US Economic Recession IS Here, NOW!!eleventy!!" to get the Fed to move. Been going on for months, since at least May. Idon't believe it to be entirely political, but that would be a nice bonus, to whomever wants it. Same phrases, same rationale, pointed out at multiple outlets that wouldn't ordinarily look that coordinated, but do when the same few keywords pop up all on the same day, all spontaneous like.

That's one angle.

The transmission of cuts is entirely another matter and my 180 page white paper on the subject is tied up in the compliance department.

Pin, you do deserve a better comment than I gave last night. I have never tuned myself to your type of posting style and, aside from the early pindandpagefiller comment, I have never interacted with you.

You are considered to be a member of the JOM community, and I respect others who enjoy your posts. I, as I stated, mostly scroll by and leave you alone.

Last night when you posted about the premature baby i thought that it was your daughter and grandchild. I was going to break my protocol and extend my heartfelt concern to a fellow JOMer and his family. That is how we care for each other.

I read it a second time and realized that it was a barely attributed cut and paste and it really bugged me. No details, no sourcing, no quotation marks, no italics. I had no idea what this person meant to you and my guess is that most of the other JOMers were even more clueless. I guessed that by the lack of response from a normally prayer filled group.

I don't understand how posts like that get placed here so randomly and I probably never will. But that is your style, and people here enjoy it.

To segue off of JimNJ, it isn't my cup of tea.

Just like donald schaeffer did some good in baltimore, which schmolke smoked up.

henry, was just reading about Rizzo, didn't realize he actually endorsed Nixon in '72! But look at the follow-up to Wilson Goode - the execrable Ed Rendell. Meanwhile, the burnt-out hulls of north Philly houses have sat there unchanged for 30 or 40 years.

But I thought Americans were paying for the tariffs and it was going to mean BAD things for retailers of Chinese goods?

hrt, people and communities are too complicated to understand. I recognize my shortcomings in recognizing shortcomings. :-)

I comment at JOM sometimes and often not at all. Take no special meaning from it.

In "relationships" one type of person has big needs in some areas and few needs in others.

On the other side of a relationship, I might be willing to give lots of attention in some areas and little in others.

- Big attention is not needed where few needs are.
- Little attention doesn't help where there are big needs.
- Big attention can help where there are big needs
- Little attention isn't a problem where there are few needs.

Relations work best when people recognize the matches and mismatches in needs and wants. It works best when people can be flexible, understanding, forgiving, and self-depreciating. I value the delightful examples I have seen here.

People here vary by day as to whether they are gracious or wound up. When they are wound up for a completely different reason, they might lash out here. A baseball player who struck out does not take it out on the Gatorade bucket because they are mad at Gatorade.

This community, warts and all, is a helluva community of which I am proud to be part.

Disclaimer: hrt, this lecture is not directed at you. You gave me the current opportunity to say what I have wanted to say for a while. I just happened to have the time now.

If you borrow billions of yen to trade commodities and "hedged" (read extra low margin requirements) cross border yield swaps, calling the loan might impact your future longevity in the biz.

That's the Carry Trade, in a nutshell. Where does it appear when it all goes Turtles?

Yen crosses (Yen vs other currencies, remember currencies always trade in pairs with another currency. Always. Forwards are just a variant, but more complicated and not worth explaining until we get into the nitty gritty of just how bad the PBOC screwed up.)

Narciso

Im just surprised the yen is showing signs of life, has abe been able to resucitate the overall japanese economy.

One of my younger daughter's ex squeezes, who I still stay in contact with despite her objections, lived in Philthy in some gentrified area in a place his developer father rehabbed. It's not for the faint of heart.

How far are you off 80, box?

Want to Write a Novel? You’ll Need a License for That. the simple act of typing at his dining room table would make him a criminal in his home town of Charlottesville, Virginia.

No, but it has kept their banks open.

When they shouldn't be.

I have my monitor back! I decided to crawl around under the desk and check the attachments to the tower one more time before buying a newish one, and somewhere in there was a loose wire!

I can't tell you how happy I am!

henry

Miss M, you discovered the secret of tech support (is it plugged in?)!

Another White Supremecist shooting in Philadelphia?

One of the high end audio dealers I got to know is a black guy who grew up in the worst part of Philly.

Yes, he is a total libtard, but otherwise pleasant and fun loving, so we get along.

He has done well for himself, and now lives in the rolling hills of Newtown Square.

He got about as far away in just about every respect possible to be able to say "I still live in Philly":)

It would show great weakness if Israel allowed Rep. Omar and Rep.Tlaib to visit. They hate Israel & all Jewish people, & there is nothing that can be said or done to change their minds. Minnesota and Michigan will have a hard time putting them back in office. They are a disgrace!

I like that, sbw.

How far are you off 80, box?

Looks like I'm about 65 miles south of it, Cap'n.

Bwahhahahahahah! Right! How is this dope still CEO:

henry,

A corollary to that tech support should probably be "Does a dog sleep under the desk?"

Narciso

She wanted special delivery, iywim.

Porchlight

hrtshpdbox, I've always considered you to be part of the community here. Some folks come and go a little bit more often, but they are always in the family, as I see it.

Jane

Henry,

I just started reading this post- Trumps's tweet:

"It would show great weakness if Israel allowed Rep. Omar and Rep.Tlaib to visit. They hate Israel & all Jewish people, & there is nothing that can be said or done to change their minds. Minnesota and Michigan will have a hard time putting them back in office. They are a disgrace!"

At the exact same second, and I mean EXACT, Stuart Varney started reading it on TV, at the exact same speed.

I think I need to hire him.

hrtshpdbox

Porch, you're right. I didn't want to make a thing of it, just sort of wanted to share my perspective about when Daddy passed, which I did brood about.
