Beto has re-booted his campaign and now I'm booting too:
The Daily 202: The newest purity test for Democrats is whether to mandate assault weapons buybacks
Oh, brother.
Former Texas congressman Beto O’Rourke unveiled a detailed gun-control proposal this morning that calls for a “mandatory buyback program for assault weapons and a voluntary buyback program for handguns.” Critics say this would amount to government confiscation of firearms that people have bought legally. O’Rourke proposes an increase in the excise tax on gun manufacturers and stiff fines on gun traffickers to enable the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives to purchase all the assault weapons he wants to ban. Individuals who fail to sell their assault rifles would then face fines.
O’Rourke is taking this hard line as he restarts his campaign nearly two weeks after 22 people were massacred at a Walmart in his hometown of El Paso, the deadliest attack against the Latino community in American history. The former congressman’s plan also calls for creating a nationwide gun licensing system. “If at this moment we do not wake up to this threat, then we, as a country, will die in our sleep,” O’Rourke said in an emotional half-hour speech yesterday.
Oh, brother brother.
First, as a matter of rhetoric I hate his speechwriter's decision to go with 'If we don't wake up to this threat, we will die in our sleep from gun violence'. Sure, sleep, wake, got it. But its a clash of imagery - what, I'm going to get shot while I'm asleep? How? During a home invasion? Why would I agree to disarm after having that idea put in my head?
And anyway, dying in one's sleep is an aspiration! What's the old folk wisdom? "I want to die in my sleep like my uncle, not screaming like terror like the passengers in his car".
As to the politics, this proposal ranks up their with open borders and free health café for undocumented future Democrats. Do Beto, Liz Warren and others think they can win the Presidency (and hold the House) by boosting their support in California, New York and Massachusetts while cratering it in Pennsylvania, Michigan and Wisconsin? Do they even remember the idea of "swing states" or are they moving left so fast they think they've already abolished the Electoral College?
The crazy is coming faster then ever in the Dem nominating process. And wait until a few of the moderates drop out and the rest (like Beto) reposition. Hang on!
First! How cool! Now I have to think of something smart to say...
Posted by: Jane | August 16, 2019 at 01:13 PM
Right. That’s real smart of them.

As for “dying in their sleep” — isn’t that how Dems get moar voters! The cemetery always votes D by wide margins.

Beto was "re-setting" his campaign. Unfortunately he didn't take his 1/3 horsepower brain into the shop for a rework and reset before he opened his mouth. Bye bye Beto. Don't let the screen door slap ya on the behind as you leave the race.

To me, the most under-rated links course in the world. The toughest opeing tee shot in golf.
When you played No. 9, the short par 4, did you notice the airport runway to your left? That is Campbelltown Airport now but back in the day it was a joint USAF and Royal Air Force Air base. That is where we flew the SR-71 Blackbird for a time.

MT = --I’m focused on the lack of guilt that most seem to hold. Suicide always seems to point to a hidden conscience that acknowledges fault. I really have a hard time believing that Epstein had that ‘flaw’.--
Psychos, socios, etc would never kill themselves over remorse or guilt.
Suicide is often connected to hopelessness or unremitting pain of some sort or both. Disordered people usually feel empty and are incredibly sensitive to even the slightest pain or slight the world inflicts, so I could see one offing himself after his facade comes crashing down, maybe in a final "F you!" gesture to the world that wounded and failed him so badly.

ALERTS TO THREATS IN EUROPE: BY JOHN CLEESE
The English are feeling the pinch in relation to recent events in Syria and have therefore raised their security level from "Miffed" to "Peeved." Soon, though, security levels may be raised yet again to "Irritated" or even "A Bit Cross."
The English have not been "A Bit Cross" since the blitz in 1940 when tea supplies nearly ran out.
Terrorists have been re-categorized from "Tiresome" to "A Bloody Nuisance." The last time the British issued a "Bloody Nuisance" warning level was in 1588, when threatened by the Spanish Armada.
The Scots have raised their threat level from "Pissed Off" to "Let's get the Bastards." They don't have any other levels. This is the reason they have been used on the front line of the British army for the last 300 years.
The French government announced yesterday that it has raised its terror alert level from "Run" to "Hide." The only two higher levels in France are "Collaborate" and "Surrender." The rise was precipitated by a recent fire that destroyed France 's white flag factory, effectively paralyzing the country's military capability.
Italy has increased the alert level from "Shout Loudly and Excitedly" to "Elaborate Military Posturing." Two more levels remain: "Ineffective Combat Operations" and "Change Sides."
The Germans have increased their alert state from "Disdainful Arrogance" to "Dress in Uniform and Sing Marching Songs." They also have two higher levels: "Invade a Neighbour" and "Lose."
Belgians, on the other hand, are all on holiday as usual; the only threat they are worried about is NATO pulling out of Brussels .
The Spanish are all excited to see their new submarines ready to deploy. These beautifully designed subs have glass bottoms so the new Spanish navy can get a really good look at the old Spanish navy.
Australia, meanwhile, has raised its security level from "No worries" to "She'll be alright, Mate." Two more escalation levels remain: "Crikey! I think we'll need to cancel the barbie this weekend!" and "The barbie is cancelled." So far no situation has ever warranted use of the last final escalation level.
A final thought - " Greece is collapsing, the Iranians are getting aggressive, and Rome is in disarray. Welcome back to 430 BC".

A little ducking around found me this GatewayPundit link: https://www.thegatewaypundit.com/2019/08/exclusive-grassley-letter-shows-hillarys-emails-were-copied-to-a-gmail-account-by-platte-river-employee-paul-combetta-whom-fbi-gave-immunity-where-are-these-emails-today/
They did a little sleuthing, and the story about Hilary's email going to a Chinese company is wrong. It was a dummy gmail account and the innocuous-sounding name they picked is similar to the generic-western name that this apparently legit Chinese company picked, but their email is totally different.
Anybody who is saying that we've found a smoking gun of exactly what happened to the emails is falling into the trap of looking like a wingnut conspiracy theorist. The whole point of the Hilary email crime is that the way she handled tens of thousands of emails anybody could have read them, and Lord only knows who read them. A classic prog diversionary tactic is to focus on dumb conservative claims that this or that person/organization had the emails, and suck us into an argument where we have to prove that -- and of course we can't, but we still end up losing that argument and looking dumb. (Another variation of this tactic is to put up the straw man that we are saying that ALL of the emails had classified info in them, and so a single yoga or ChelseaWedding or AmazonGoldBox email in the mix "discredits" us.)

They know people who are really good at doctoring photos, and about the time everyone is chasing her location out there there will be passport records and flight manifests and such placing her in Europe or something.
The Clintons always did stuff like that. I go all the way back to when they fired the travel office people and had a story about how those people were doing illegal stuff (which they weren't) but when people started complaining, they dragged out the false accusations and muddied the waters.

So they are changing the nature of the bar exam in order to better reflect who is now going to law school.
We have an exciting opportunity for you to participate in the National Conference of Bar Examiners (NCBE) Testing Task Force 2019 practice analysis survey—an essential component of the task force’s three-year study to ensure that the bar exam keeps pace with a changing legal profession.
The survey is open to attorneys nationwide and is focused on collecting information about the current job activities of newly licensed lawyers. The results, which will be published at the beginning of next year, will not only be used by NCBE to develop the next generation of the bar exam but will be informative to the profession as a whole.

Softball there, MM "...since you do not have any evidence affirming Podesta's innocence..."
Nor do you have any evidence affirming Trump's non obstruction of justice in the Mueller probe.

The fevered conspiracists are no different than those who believed the Russian conspiracy or Pizzagate against all reliable evidence and common sense.
You are making absolutely no sense whatsoever clarice.
On what basis do we believe what we are being told, v what we were told re "Russia, Russia, Russia."?
Exactly what "reliable evidence" are you referring to? "Common sense"???
(My "common sense" is that hyoid bones do NOT break in suicide attempts 75% of the time. You are CHOOSING to believe that his did.)
What makes you think any of these people are any more reliable than the Russia collusion story spinners?
How do you know what is correct?

I think clarice is referring to Comet Ping Pong and the Podestas' involvement specifically.
As to whether there are child/sex trafficking rings involving people at the very tippy top of social and political circles, no one now disputes that, in part because of Epstein himself. "Pizzagate" broadly speaking refers to those rings and the efforts to hide them and protect those involved (Epstein again, and his friends such as Bill Clinton).
Once upon a time, speculating about even the existence of such rings would get you branded as a fevered conspiracist.

Scaramucci is clearly a head case, not much different than Omarossa. Trump attracts and repels a diverse cast of loonies.

"The fevered conspiracists are no different than those who believed the Russian conspiracy or Pizzagate against all reliable evidence and common sense."
Now Clarice, that's just rude!!
There is little to no reliable evidence, and I suggest unless you are a liberal, common sense says otherwise.
Harrumph!
