FTC asks that the 147M people affected by the Equifax breach take free credit monitoring as only $31M of the $575M+ Equifax settlement is allocated to consumers

As part of the original [Equifax] settlement, the FTC stated that consumers would be able to net either a $125 cash payout or ten years of free credit reporting. Users were told they'd also be able to recoup up to $20,000 in compensation if they were able to prove that the leaked data (which included social security numbers) was used to steal their identity.

A new FTC statement and blog post proclaim that because of "overwhelming" and "unexpected" public interest in the offer, users may not get the $125 they were originally promised. The agency is now strongly urging users to take the free credit monitoring instead.

In short, the $125 originally promised by the agency could wind up being as little as $5, if you wind up getting anything at all.

Yeah, that's right up there with "to be honest" and "no, those horizontal neon stripes don't make your butt look big" in phrases conveying the opposite of what they're intended to.

MissMarple3

One thing that bugs me is that prison reform was necessary because of Bill Clinton's "Three Strikes and You're Out" bill which was done primarily to make him look tough on crime with little regard for how it would work in practice.

It ended up harming a lot of black families, but as we now have, seen they are cannon fodder as far as the democrats are concerned.

Why no one spotted this before President Trump, I cannot explain, but I am glad to see that he has stepped in to rectify it.

MissMarple3

Ignore that misplaced comma in the second paragraph above (right before "seen").

Narciso

Well it was based on the work of John giulio among others, who rather quickly disowned his own work, so it continued grinding on it's own, it was an overcompensation for 25 years of lenient behavior in criminology.

clarice - Don't you think the Rasmussen number may even be higher? I think just like the Trump supporters who fear retaliation for their support, many black voters might not speak out but silently applaud what he's trying to do for their communities. Overuse of the racial card is so over the top and obvious to anyone with any sense.

I met a Trump supporter in the oral surgeon's office this week. (My daughter had her impacted wisdom teeth and a failed root canal removed.) He was proudly wearing a Trump shirt so we began to talk. I wanted to ask him if he had any negative reaction to his shirt but did not. One surprising comment he made was that he watches the MSM every day to see what the "nut jobs" are up to. I don't know how he does it! He also said it was encouraging how many Trump supporters he meets just by wearing his shirt. "There's millions of us out here!" he said.

They're enamored of their Quinnipiac and pew polls

The other day before the second debate Fox showed results of Ohio in 2016 with Trump beating Hillary by 8 points. Then they showed the recent Quinnipiac poll showing Biden ahead of Trump in Ohio by 8 points. I wonder how much they had to oversample Democrats to come up with that result?

Narciso

Yes Powell is a skunk with a different set if stripes, Cheney was more a minimalist who thought along with Rumsfeld the Iraqis could run themselves, state with the ego of the foreign office they could pick the players hence bremer, eagleton and bodine lets recall where the Larry Miller to Saddam in the worst of the anfal the choices were not good and bad but bad and worst

WSJ: The Federal Reserve conducted a formal examination this spring of an Amazon.com Inc. facility in Virginia, the first of what is expected to be ongoing oversight of giant cloud providers that have become repositories of sensitive banking information, people familiar with the matter said.

Around the same time, prosecutors allege, a 33-year-old hacker in Seattle stole Capital One Financial Corp. COF -1.93% data from Amazon's cloud storage.

The federal examiners who visited Amazon in April are the same ones who regulate Capital One. It doesn't appear they were aware of the giant hack. A person familiar with the matter said the Fed was told last week, a few days before Paige A. Thompson was charged with stealing personal information of more than 100 million Capital One card customers and applicants.

The examiners were greeted warily at the Amazon offices. Chaperoned by an Amazon employee, they were allowed to review certain documents on Amazon laptops, but not allowed to take anything with them, some of the people said.

I thoroughly disliked Matt Taibbi back when Bush Jr was POTUS and he wrote for Rolling Stone. He created the impression he was a Progressive trying to undermine the GWOT effort in Afghanistan and Iraq. He appears to have had an epiphany and is dispensing a significant amount of red pills as well as excoriating the entire Left in this essay. It is long but well worth the read.

Within 48 hours, national consensus was completely reversed. It was breathtaking.

#cleanbillofhealth IMO leading to a Trump landslide in 2020

Mueller’s legend was built without any of his hagiographers demanding to speak to the man. Virtually the whole of it was constructed on the word of confederates or anonymous sources. In the manner of priests everywhere since the beginning of time, these sources interpreted for us the secret beliefs, conclusions, and desires of the unavailable man above.

This applies to both sides. Leftwing politicians/media/pundits and pro-Trump politicians/media/pundits all resorted to creating narratives about Mueller based on half-truths, misinformation, outright lies, etc.

Saw this factoid the other day. The ball MLB uses is a different ball than what the minor leagues use with one exception. AAA uses the same ball as MLB uses. This allows for a great comparison. The homerun rate in MLB and AAA is skyrocketing to record levels.

https://www.foxsports.com/mlb/story/batters-on-pace-to-shatter-mlb-home-run-record-by-10-080119

Meanwhile in the minors AA and below, the homerun rate is significantly lower than MLB and AAA and closer to the historical rate. Pretty clear evidence the ball used in MLB and AAA is juiced compared to the ball used in AA and below.

On the neocon discussion late last night: I think the original neocons were old-school anti-Communist Dems like Kristol and Podhoretz from the 1970s, partly a backlash against the antiwar movement. So there was a bit of a bias toward interventionism, or at least activist nation-building foreign policy.

Once the Soviet empire had fallen some of that activist bias remained, even though there was less of an external threat to warrant it. Of course we had to respond to 9/11, so there was a rejuvenation of foreign policy activism, but now maybe more or realizing that we just need to defend ourselves and our borders, and not go around fixing other countries.

pro-Trump politicians/media/pundits all resorted to creating narratives about Mueller based on half-truths, misinformation, outright lies, etc.

What lies would those be? You realize that withholding information that would free wrongly convicted people is just as bad as falsely convicting them in the first place, right? I'm not sure why you give Mueller the benefit of the doubt compared to, say, Paul Manafort, but they're both deep state operatives. And Mueller's testimony probably revealed that when he and Trump met face to face, on which you've placed a huge amount of emphasis, Trump saw someone who was too mentally feeble to hurt him.

Tom R

You realize that withholding information that would free wrongly convicted people is just as bad as falsely convicting them in the first place, right?

This article? If so I'm not seeing anything that says Mueller stonewalled exculpatory data for the convicted people. The judge in the wrongful imprisonment case clearly says Mueller did nothing wrong and one of the lawyers for the framed defendants said so as well.

It's why I kept asking the question "Gohmert vs the Globe?". This is the very first sentence in the Gohmert oped Clarice linked:

Robert Mueller has a long and sordid history of illicitly targeting innocent people that is a stain upon the legacy of American jurisprudence.

Bulger also railed against former special counsel Robert Mueller. An assistant U.S. attorney in Boston in the 1980s, Mueller went on to lead the FBI at a time when it was grappling with a sensational scandal involving agents protecting mob leaders like Bulger.

"Sorry to hear Trump is being boxed in by so many," Bulger wrote last August.

"Trump is experiencing what Mueller and company can orchestrate," Bulger said in a different letter from September. "[Mueller] should observe biblical saying - 'Let he who is without sin cast the first stone.'"

One month later, Bulger was dead.

The 89-year-old was fatally bludgeoned with a lock stuffed inside a sock in late October 2018. He was killed within 12 hours of his arrival at the Hazelton federal penitentiary in Bruceton Mills, W.Va., according to prison records obtained by NBC News.

I'm not discussing this further with you, Tom. I was willing to cut Mueller slack if he'd promptly released a one page statement saying there was no collusion or obstruction but that's not what happened. I guess leaving the donks enough rope on impeachment to hang themselves has a certain strategic logic to it but it's a less serious strategy than I'd think Trump would willfully advance. Then again, I'm not him.

narc, Taibbi's always been a prick but he writes entertainingly. Hunter Thompson probably ruined journalism as much as colleges did with his drug fueled rants that people liked to read and a lot of people tried to be like him; which was a mistake because if you're a boring writer you'll just write boring rants that nobody wants to read.
