I'm on tilt here.
OK, here we go: Ebola "cured-ish", if treatment is early. This is a BFD, and to whom do we owe thanks? The US taxpayer and, well, terrorism-inspired paranoia.
From the Times:
A Cure for Ebola? Two New Treatments Prove Highly Effective in Congo
The therapies saved roughly 90 percent of the patients who were newly infected, a turning point in the decades-long fight against the virus.
...
REGN-EB3 is made by Regeneron Pharmaceuticals of Tarrytown, N.Y., which also makes other antibody treatments. Dr. Fauci’s institute, which is part of the National Institutes of Health, developed mAb114 and licensed production last year to Ridgeback Biotherapeutics, a Miami company.
[LONG Skip and...]
Development of the new treatments was supported by the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority, a division of the Department of Health and Human Services concerned with fighting chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear threats, and pandemic diseases.
Your tax dollars at work! In partnership with two private companies, so something for everyone. Come 2021 President Bernie will be investigating these companies and fining or jailing them for not having finished this sooner, but let's focus on the now. Here is HHS announcing the new trial last year:

Don't run out and buy Regeneron (REGN) stock, however- no one is sure whether or how they will make money on this.
And the other winner, Ridgeback Biotherapeutics? As best I can tell it is owned and funded by a doctor and his wife, a health care investor, both of whom seem to have struck it rich as hedge fund heroes and are running this company to do good:
Headquartered in Miami, Florida, Ridgeback Biotherapeutics is a privately held, majority woman owned biotechnology company focused on orphan and infectious diseases. Life to date, all funding for Ridgeback Biotherapeutics has originated from Wayne and Wendy Holman; two science driven individuals who invest in technologies that they believe will make the world a better place. The team at Ridgeback is dedicated to working toward finding life-saving and life changing solutions for patients and diseases that need champions.
Yeah, take THAT, Bill and Melinda Gates!
OK, good for them, good for us, and thank you. (Now, Bernie, lock 'em up, amirite!)

Beginning in 2020, spray sprinklers will be required to be sold with a component that restricts the water flow to as close as possible to 30 pounds per square inch (PSI), the manufacturer-recommended level.
“California’s standard requires new spray sprinkler bodies to come with built-in pressure regulation, so that the water pressure reaching the sprinkler nozzle is always close to the manufacturer’s recommended operating pressure,” according to the NRDC.
The pressure regulating component will add about $3 to the sprinkler’s price tag, “but the cost is offset by water savings within the first year, making the technology highly cost-effective over the life of the product,” according to the NRDC.

Posted by: Porchlight | August 15, 2019 at 12:50 PM
Let's talk about my new washer, IRT to "savings." Had to replace the fifty plus year old one here at the lake last month.
Got the cheapest one Costco had on its 4th of July sale--a GE model that I thought was simple. Damn--it's electronic.
My current work around is to use "Deep Rinse" and the "Quick Wash settings--otherwise whatever the hell it does, it does for well over an hour, and tears up fabric. How can it rip a rag rug???
From reviews, of all kinds of models--very common.
So, whatever it saves in water, it's costing in electricity, my time, and wear and tear on fabric.

More news on daughter.
This was not a termination for cause. She got $3000 in severance but they will take her insurance out of that for a month or so.
Melinda sent me a listing for a position at IU Health, and I told her I would contact my friend who retired from the Indiana Cancer Registry. My youngest sister also has contacts at some of the hospitals, and a few blocks from us is a company that specializes in fire and water restoration amd which has a big sign up which says they are hiring (although most are for the trades, I am pretty sure).
She said her position started at $15/hour but she was making $19/hr due to raises so she thinks maybe this might have been cost-cutting.
I have her looking up how to file for unemployment and what to do before she files, so that should keep her busy this afternoon.
The severance made me feel better, as she should do fine as far as references and such.

Tom B, I'm sure Hillary had ties to the mob and cartels so sure, the swamp could have put a hit on him. And that's why I question giving him such a dangerous cellmate in the first place. If there's anything nefarious about this, it's at the top of MCC Manhattan and above that.
If they granted the lawyers request for Epstein to come off suicide watch, why didn't they also grant his request to be transferred to another facility? So he wanted out of that institution and what does the institution do? They put him right back into the same situation.
Right now I'm still thinking he did it, probably because he was scared to death...so to speak!

Rocco, Epstein certainly had reason to be terrified. I hear pedophiles don't do well in prison.
But I guess my real point was that we can't underestimate the swamp -- the corruption, the vastness, the reach, and sheer brazenness. And, sad to say, it has the full backing of the media. I'm thinking of Hillary lying her way through Benghazi hearings then getting all those press accolades for her "poise."
Posted by: Tom Bowler | August 15, 2019 at 02:40 PM
I wonder if the threat to Pedophiles in prisons isn't more common when their crimes involve young children and not teenage girls who look of age. Just saying--lots of conventional wisdom has buried caveats.

Lemme see now. Sacramento says that a sprinkler manufacturer has to design things such that the sprinkler operates at the "design pressure". Then Sacramento says that the "design pressure" must be lowered to some unicorn friendly pressure.
Before the unicorns came, my home sprinkler system used 8 sprinkler heads. Now that they have to operate on unicorn friendly pressure, I need 24 sprinkler heads. Both systems ultimately deliver the same amount of water to my lawns. No water is saved but I get to buy 3 times as many sprinkler heads, and each one of them costs $3 extra.
I'm dealing with this sort of Sacramento nonsense in my home kitchen (a complete remodel about 10 years ago). California and local codes said I had to remove the perfectly adequate fluorescent and incandescent light bulbs. I had to install the new "environmentally friendly" light bulbs--mainly halogen types. They were supposed to (a) save energy; and (b) have a 10 year service life. BS to that. They fail frequently--average life of a bulb is maybe 8 or 9 months. Then because the contents of the bulb are hazardous, they have to go to special recycling facility. The senile morons in Sacramento strike again!

My first two years I worked the midnight shift and one night, the superintendent (warden) pulled a 3am raid to catch the officers sleeping. He drove up to shack called checkpoint and let a guy out who told the officer, "don't touch the phone" and the guy stayed with him. Then the superintendent drove to the front door where he and another guy got out, ran into the building, leaving another guy in the front office who told the officer, "don't touch the phone." Then the superintendent ran up to the first tier where he found the sergeant sleeping. Then he ran up to the second tier, then the third. And when he got back down to the first tier, the sergeant was still sleeping.
At the sergeant's disciplinary hearing, he stated that he wasn't sleeping. He was fired and won his job back in arbitration. The moral of the story...some prison guards sleep at night.
