I've been trying to quantify how many missiles Iran has and not getting anywhere. Searches tell me about the type of missiles they have, their ranges and capacities, but not the absolute quantity.

Hezbollah is said to have 1000,000-150,000 rockets. Mostly short-range and unguided. With some better rockets/missiles snuck into the country recently.

From what I have read, and this may be wrong, Iran seems to be more interested in more capable missiles, and maybe not quantity.

I guess I'm baffled at the Iranian strategy. Like China, are they trying to get Trump to commit to what might be an unpopular action that might lead to a Democrat win next year?

And I'm not sure who is driving the Iranian strategy. The IRGC or the government? And the warnings coming out of Iran regarding military action are weird.

I don't foresee a ground invasion of Iran, unless it's commando forces. So I discount the IRGC and Army being involved in defending against a ground war.

Why would we even launch a ground war? So, I'm looking at Iran's offensive capabilities.

Their Air Force is a joke. I don't even think it's worth a pre-emptive strike against it. No need to crater runways or such. I don't even think their Air Force will risk coming into the air.

So we have air superiority already, subject to their air defense missile batteries. Which would make then high-priority targets.

Their Navy isn't really a threat and can be dealt with quickly. Their few submarines might take a little longer to neutralize.

So, no ground battle, no aerial attacks from the Air Force, and an easily punished Navy. What's left is missile attacks.

Which means the missiles are a high-priority targets.

Which, if I'm working as a targeteer, means that my primary concern is defensive ground-to-air missiles and offensive ground-to-ground missiles.

Next strike after that is the underground missile factories. There are about 3-6 of them.

And I haven't attacked a population center unless the missile factories are near them.

If I own the skies at that point I should be able to see any missiles being moved around and hit them.

While taking out some refineries might be more proportional, the missiles are more worrisome.

Anybody with a critique is welcome to respond.

If there really is a competent GCC commando force, I'd rather see a long sequence of Iranian accidents. Covert better than overt is my best thought.

Iran fury: Rouhani erupts at threat of foreign forces and warns west to 'stay away!'

War-mongering or fear?

MissMarple2

jim nj,

I am completely inadequate at assessing military strategy. What you wrote made sense to me.

The only thing I can think of to add to it is that they may be being pushed by either Russia or China, with the idea that Trump will cause an unpopular action and lose the election.

What I have seen over the last 3 years is that President Trump is way more patient than the press portrayed him as, and he is quite willing to let the Iranians flounder in financial trouble. They aren't going to get much help from China, I think, and Russia isn't doing so well, either.

MissMarple2

Speaking of having all of the angles covered, this popped up in my local news:

jim nj

Thank you, MM, I am proceeding with the assumption that a major factor in any war plan is to minimize the possible damage to Saudi Arabia.

The only threat to Saudi Arabia seems to be from missiles like the ARAMCO attack.

Were I Saudi Arabia I would be more concerned with what Iran could do to me, rather than what I could do to them.

That's why I am focusing on the missiles.

The Houthis are a side-show. After initially claiming responsibility for the ARAMCO attack they have told the UN they will no longer launch attacks against the Saudis. The Saudis bombed them even though they didn't think they were responsible for the attack. Now they are claiming that Iran plans another attack. IOW, if it happens again it wasn't us Houthis.

It's convenient being aligned with Iran, until it isn't.

Buckeye

jim nj

After the air defense missile batteries, I would start bunker busting the centrifuge sites.

The world needs another nuclear power like the NORKS like it needs a whole in the head.

jim nj

Does Iran, if attacked, expect Hezbollah to launch rockets against Israel as a side-show?

I'm not sure the interests of Hezbollah and Iran align that closely.

The Israeli army seems to be very good about knowing the phone numbers of people near targets.

"Yo, Mohamed, you know that Hezbollah rocket in your backyard? Yeah, that one. It's going to explode in 15 minutes, you better leave."

Captain Hate

We'd have been 100% screwed with President Mutt Rombley. He'd have only been a one termer and we'd now have The Beast in office.

jim nj

Buckeye,

Yes the nuclear facilities would be an eventual target if the war lasted long enough.

I wouldn't be surprised if the Israelis did a covert air flight amidst the confusion.

jim nj

I know I sometimes slip into a war-monger role, but I'm not interested in losing American Military lives. I'm not a war-time general, but an armchair analyst. I just like to try to figure out how things might happen.

rse

New report out today https://www.ellenmacarthurfoundation.org/our-work/activities/climate-change

Greenhouse gas emissions are not falling quickly enough to achieve climate targets and switching to renewable energy can only cut them by 55%
The remaining 45% of emissions come from how we make and use products, and how we produce food

Whilst the circular economy is underpinned by renewable energy, the paper concentrates on five key areas (cement, plastics, steel, aluminium, and food) to illustrate how designing out waste, keeping materials in use, and regenerating farmland can reduce these emissions.

Completing the Picture: How the Circular Economy Tackles Climate Change demonstrates how business leaders, policymakers, and investors can build a thriving and resilient economy while playing an essential role in reaching climate targets.

Another Bob

I dunno Jim, the ME is always wheels within wheels.

The only thing that seriously concerns me is the mullahs getting nukes and making themselves untouchable. I’m happy to let them waste their money playing with the tinker toys of development, so long as they never acquire certain bits or combinations of bits. I assume between us, Israel and Saudi, we have a fair handle on that status and would act if needed.

We keep hearing about the rank-and-file Iranians - who still have memories of living in a modern society - tiring of the mullahs. When do they act from within? Or are they like the supposedly honest FBI agents we keep waiting to hear from?

Another Bob

The real problem comes when/if the Saudis get nukes.
