FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
2019-184

Washington D.C., Sept. 23, 2019 —

The Securities and Exchange Commission today charged accounting firm PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP with improper professional conduct in connection with 19 engagements on behalf of 15 SEC-registered issuers and violating auditor independence rules in connection with engagements for one issuer where the firm performed prohibited non-audit services. The SEC also charged PwC partner Brandon Sprankle with causing the firm’s independence violations. Both respondents have agreed to settle the charges and PwC will pay over $7.9 million in monetary relief.

Well, back to work for a while.

I am pulling junk and unneeded clothing for donation to the Salvation Army. This is not fun because it involves lots of decision-making (how many turtlenecks do I need, should I keep all these picture frames, etc.) plus it reminds me how much money I spent on things I didn't really need.

However, it HAS to be done.

Ignatz Ratzkiwatzki

--They keep giving the Dems ideas.--

I think you have that backwards, henry.
The Dems have the ideas but the ChiComms have the power to implement them.

D

Finally caught up.
Spent Saturday with high school friends I have known for 55 years.
Wonderful day!
As for education,
My father left school in the 9th grade because of the depression and worked to help his family out.
Later worked as a railroad fireman then engineer.
Self taught intelligent man with loads of common sense and a keen interest in politics.
Never liked FDR.
However the comments about education I read were puzzling.
I don’t believe advanced degrees are to be dismissed so easily.
In today’s workplace, more knowledge is a good thing.
I don’t recall any posts here about a son or daughter taking a gap year.
Many of your children have gone on for advanced.
Education is the ONLY way out for inner city blacks or poor folks of any color.
Working with at risk kids trying to help them graduate from college and move onto community college was worthwhile.
As was the work to prepare them to enter the different trades.
I still take classes now.
It is what you do with your education that matters.

D

Should be graduate from high school.

henry

Maryrose, modern advanced degrees may have more to do with creating "activists" than increasing knowledge applicable to a workplace (or anywhere else).

rse

Red was telling me last weekend about two different college friends who borrowed money to get masters degrees in fields they thought would help them. One has discovered that the companies she thought would be interested in her do not recruit from the mba program she got her degree from.

The other has gotten an internship in the field she got her degree in, but the pay is so low and the hours are only 30 per week that it won't cover her debt plus living expenses.

Many graduate degrees these days only benefit the profs at the higher ed institution who get paid to deliver the credential. Another relative is working outside of her masters degree field for about what she made before going back to school and another friend has been unable to pass the bar after getting a degree from a newer program without realizing the risk.

Scammed all over.

D

Henry:
Couldn’t disagree more.
The PhD’s I know are pro-life and very conservative.
One is my brother-in-law and the other is a teaching colleague.
Generalizations are usually not accurate.
As far as Melania
being the best First Lady?
She has done a very good job but so has Laura Bush.
Reading and literacy are important.
Melania is accomplished, knowing 5 languages and she is a survivor.

Captain Hate

Attaining an MBA was more evidence of my ability to juggle work, family life including children and school than anything else.

rse

MR-if you are using your own personal experience to disagree with henry's point at 2:00 PM, you are quite wrong. Most of these undergrad and graduate programs are now grounded in competencies that expressly stipulate what they regard as the Knowledge, Skills, and Attributes (KSA) to be a cultural Change Agent.

Pretending that is not the case now because it wasn't the case in your own degree program leaves too many people unaware of why these degree programs are so worthless in terms of genuine knowledge.

https://responsibility.global/the-coming-consciousness-revolution-in-business-c033168d4383 is a recent example in business on the desired changes with the hype it is a vision that "changes who people are being, not only what they are doing."

Ignatz Ratzkiwatzki

--However the comments about education I read were puzzling.
I don’t believe advanced degrees are to be dismissed so easily.--

What were being dismissed were accomplishments that did not include advanced degrees.

--Generalizations are usually not accurate.--

maryrose, as I recall, someone used college and advanced degrees as a proxy for "accomplishment," and the responses were merely to point out that those degrees are neither necessary nor sufficient for accomplishment. No one is seriously disputing that education can help people accomplish more, but it doesn't guarantee it, and certainly isn't synonymous with accomplishment.

MissMarple2

Things I have found going through stuff:

My dad's second Bronze Star recommendation from WWII (in which the crappy officer said that a Legion of Merit was not considered appropriate since he was enlisted).

A copy of the junior high newspaper I edited when I was in the 9th grade. In those days we had to lay it all out and send it to an actual printer.

My daughter's Easter hat from when she was 4.

A stack of birthday cards my granddaughter left behind from the year she lived here.

A stack of risque playing cards my son left behind. (Those went in the trash.)

You can see why this is taking me a long time!

Jack is Back!

MR,

There is a study on university faculty political and cultural leanings including abortion. Engineering is like a ratio close to even but the more you move into the social sciences and liberal arts it escalates exponentially. Most of the faculty are PHd’s. I’ll try to find it for you. I imagine catsmeat and jimmyk can probably confirm from their experience.

D

Jimmyk:
Thank you for the clarification.
In some cases you can’t move forward to accomplish something in your field without the degree or certification.
Are there any posters on this blog whose children did not pursue education beyond high school?
Some people are self made entrepreneurs.

MissMarple2

Maryrose,

My son went into the Marines but was discharged with bad knees. Started one semester at IU Indianapolis and simply couldn't stick it. He worked for a long time in landscaping, taught himself Spanish, and made pretty good money at it. However, he got skin cancer (he's blonde) and hadto quit.

He is now working two jobs waiting tables, one at a wings place and one at a high-price steakhouse in the evenings, where he makes pretty good money on tips.

He is very smart but is not the academic sort.

My daughter has a Masters in Library Science and an undergraduate degree in fine art. (Art was the only way I could get her to go to college.) She neither works in libraries nor in art. She is currently laid off from an insurance company and is looking for an office job.

Narciso79

By chtluthu what did canton do to deserve this?

jimmyk

JiB, I think someone posted something here a week or two showing a breakdown of party affiliation (or something like that) by field among professors. I'm sure the pattern you describe is accurate, though I'd add that within the social sciences, economics is a bit more balanced, perhaps not surprisingly. My impression, though, is that even that has shifted somewhat left, perhaps due to the influx of Europeans and South Americans into the US econ departments.

MissMarple2

How you know the colleges are into shifting kids leftward:

When my daughter wasin art school, she used to sit in her car in the parking lot and listen to GORDON LIDDY on the radio. She loved him!

Now she is pure liberal, with flashes of common sense. I wish I could get proof her father has been voting Democrat - I bet she would switch in a flash! HA!

Jack is Back!

jimmyk,

Yes that was it. Political affiliation but when you think about the same I posted😇

I believe catsmeat Hs already confirmed that in many of her posts.

--No both people without degrees and those with them were discussed.
Only the ones with a degree were diminished.--

MR,
I was there. I started the conversation by noting Melania's accomplishments and asking which recent first lady was as accomplished as her. Another Bob listed most of the recent ones and used master's degrees and law licenses to claim they were more accomplished than Melania. I and others disagreed.

--Norman coordinate? Iggy,
What are you talking about?--

In a Star Trek episode there was a planet with numerous humanoid robots who were controlled by the central robot Norman. Kirk and company flummoxed the robots by using logical paradox's like "everything I say is a lie". When the other robots' circuits started getting fried they asked Norman their controller to coordinate their ECUs, but Kirk polished him off with the above line.

Your phrase "Generalizations are usually not accurate" is a remarkably similar logical paradox in that it is a generalization about generalizations not being accurate which means your generalization wasn't accurate either which means they are generally accurate which means...

You messed it up slightly with your "usually" qualifier.

Robin, Schadenfreude Red lipstick

An Art Therapy Masters is now controversial?
How about a Special Ed degree?
Not all colleges are the same.
Not all students succumb to liberal bias.
Counseling degrees are pretty much the same from what I have obtained in knowledge from recent graduates.

Hi all! Barely ever caught up these days. Hi MR. I think the problem may be that too many people are acquiring these degrees. I know two people who have masters in Art Therapy but cannot find jobs in their fields. This is Ithaca of course, and they could potentially find a job elsewhere in the US.

I also know that a slew of folks with library science master degrees lost their jobs when NY State decided that a librarian could simply be someone with a masters in education. This was walked back by some school districts who found that having a librarian full time in the building was more effective for students, but not all districts could afford to fund that again. So many who are acquiring MLS degrees are unable to find jobs in their field. Social science advanced degrees don't always translate to well-paid jobs either.

Today, an education can be attained with a library card and an internet connection. My son is looking into an intensive Japanese language program that would have him in Japan for a year. (Anyone who has any experience with this - please chime in.) It is far more cost effective than school in the US and will allow him to study exactly what he wants to study, experience the culture, and hopefully position him for a job when he finishes. He's been working since he finished high school and saved a pile of money to fund this.

Kids are doing a cost/benefit analysis of college, as they should. The landscape is changing.

Ignatz Ratzkiwatzki

--Who had more influence? --

Is this a trick question? They're not even playing the same game let alone in the same league.

--Motown was the best.--

Actually Stax was, but to each his own.

Jack is Back!

Just from personal experience that in my line of work, from construction, to engineering management, to corporate management. I would have never got there without my MSc. Maryrose,

I posted the tales of both of my kids to show the dilemmas each face. My daughter is bogged down iwth student loans for that Masters, which she was talked into getting by her then sister-in-law who also talked her into borrowing for living expenses so that her brother could devote himself to his painting. (I knew nothing about this as they were living in Wisconsin.)

I do not count my son's 8 weeks in school as higher education. I gave a good faith answer and you decided to show me up. I will not make that mistake again.
