Anthony Watts and volunteers did a survey of existing weather reporting stations and found many of them to be compromised by encroachment of paving or AC exhaust units.

Beyond that many weather stations are located at airports with huge amounts of concrete and asphalt surrounding them, not to mention the exhaust of planes.

ABC/Washington Post Poll was the worst and most inaccurate poll of any taken prior to the 2016 Election. When my lawyers protested, they took a 12 point down and brought it to almost even by Election Day. It was a Fake Poll by two very bad and dangerous media outlets. Sad!

Particulate matter in the atmosphere is known to disperse the effect of the sun's rays.

It just makes sense, and it's the basis for these silly ideas of dispersing particulates into the atmosphere to mitigate against the sun's power over climate.

Yet we launched a war against particulates in the atmosphere over the US. We called it "smog" and we got rid of it.

How surprising is it that by getting rid of "smog" we might have allowed more sunlight to strike the earth?

Now scientists are suggesting artificial "smog" as a solution. Come on.

Reason #15,843 to hate the government: I just bought a new window A/C to replace one that had stopped working. The new models now are forced to default to the "money saver" mode when you turn them on, in order to comply with "Energy Star" requirements. Of course it took me a week to realize why the unit kept shutting off, having to get up in the middle of the night to change it to normal "cool" mode. I called the manufacturer and they said this is the case for all 2019 models, and there's no way to override.

Not the end of the world: I have to remember now to press two buttons to turn it on. But just another little annoyance. And we don't even have an EU bureaucracy to blame it on. We need Wexit.

jim nj

Climate scientist Roger Pielke, Sr, posited 3 causes for climate change
a) man-made
b) natural cycle
C) some combination of the above.

To my mind c) is probably the best choice. Man may have some impact on the environment, but I don't understand how we can have more of an effect than nature.

Nature with all its effects is much more powerful than we mere mortals could achieve.

Maybe the most important finding from today's Census Bureau report on Income. Yes, the middle class is disappearing but it's because they're moving up to higher income groups. The share of US households making $100K (2018 $$) has more than tripled since 1967, from 9% to 30.4%.

No, jim_nj, the second button is to change the mode from "money saver" to "cool." Two separate steps: Turn on the unit, then change the mode. Defeating the government would be to have an override, as with those removable flow restrictors in shower heads.

Reason #15,844, though this is NYC, not federal: I've been thinking about investing in NYC real estate (probably a mistake already, but the rate of return seems significantly higher than what I can get on a lot of other investments these days). Anyway, NYC just passed a law that forbids landlords from asking for more than one month security and the first month's rent. Who is hurt by this? Tenants with poor credit records, income below standard thresholds (I'm told 40 x rent), etc., who now won't be able to find an apartment.

I listened to a podcast some months ago in which a research scientist urgently warned people to be careful about microdosing.
In the old days, hippies would take a 250 or 300 microgram dose of LSD at most once a week, but microdosing is done several times a week.
I don't recall the bio/chem details but there is a chemical which binds with a receptor thus blocking the receptor from being used. If you wait a week, no problem, the situation will have healed itself. But if you microdose regularly the receptor is continuously blocked thus leading to a potential (heart?) problem.

A-mom, if you are interested I can try to go back and find the podcast ... and I'm not expecting the JOM community is likely to get into a microdose frenzy LOL ... but I wanted to put that warning out there.

This raises the eternal "stupid or evil?" question.

Do the people writing these laws not understand the very obvious consequences that logically follow, as jimmyk neatly lays out here, which means they're morons and unfit to hold public office?

Or do they understand perfectly well, and want the situation to get worse, which will give them an issue to run for reelection on, a boogeyman to attack, and a pretext for ever more laws and regulations?

Certainly true in Central Ahia.

Infrastructure going in for at least 3000 new home sites within a 2 mile radius.

Bad news is you are going to need more than a $100K income to swing the mortgage, so mostly 2 income families.

jimmyk,

That is a State law not NYC law. Although it affects the City big time since NYC is a renter's paradise. It also has a significant effect in The Hamptons. If we want to rent for more than one month we can only take a deposit of the first month. You are literally risking someone coming in in June (cheapest summer month) and not paying for July and August. Just daring you to evict them.

The rental business out east has been turned upside down.
