That forsyth book was where a mifsud also came up who was also from malta, he figures in the soviet plot that was ripped from an earlier bond film

jim nj

Read the article and agree, and as Narciso points out the peak oil argument was still with us.

For over a century the price of oil, like diamonds, has been artificial. If producers didn't band together at an artificial price they competed to the point that no one profited.

First it was the "seven sisters" cartel, later it was the OPEC cartel.

Every time the oil price rose dramatically it caused recessions that resulted in less demand and more exploration.

You can only control oil prices for a short time before other factors weigh in and break the control.

this is a pretty good volume if you have a chance to pick it up narciso

Marciso,

Is Wilbur Smith the author who mixes history with fiction often in dynastic means who you mean? I think I have read some of his stuff.

Narciso79

He was prince bandars thesis adviaor at john hopkins i think i read that in emersons americam house of saud that was 1982.

So the question i ask in light of past events why not more security and countermeasures.

What I remember about oil as a weapon is that it was something of a bust.

The 1967 embargo was before I started driving, do I don't remember any effects from that. And I think that was more of a paper declaration than anything else. Most of the countries cheated and shipped as much oil as they could.

The 1973-4 was a little rougher, but mostly a media-hyped fantasy. The government didn't help with the imposition of odd-even day re-fueling.

I was working in a gas station at that time. We sold a normal days supply from opening to 11AM and then closed the pumps for the rest of the day and made more money from repairs than we normally did.

We ran a 75 ft. extension of the pump line into the service bay and anyone who needed repairs got their tank filled up. None of our established customers ever lacked for gas.

The truly odd thing about the whole thing was that prior to the embargo it wasn't unusual to pump 17-19 gallons into a gas tank. Once the embargo began the usual fill-up was 3-6 gallons of fuel. Because of the uncertainty drivers kept their gas tanks as full as possible. It was obvious to me that there was just as much gasoline in the US as ever before, but it wasn't being stored in oil company tank farms or underground gas station tanks. It was sitting in gas tanks parked in home driveways.

The media had great fun broadcasting long lines of drivers lined up to take on 3-6 gallons of fuel.

Narciso79

True, but remember the oil shock after four years of retrenchment after the esso spill, earth day and the like

Narciso79

Then there was the nationalization in libya thar upped the ante.

jim nj

https://www.cnn.com/2019/09/15/politics/trump-us-saudi-arabia-attack-iran-iraq/index.html

Several articles are suggesting the attack didn't come from the Houthis. This one suggests that the attacks, because of the damage done, came from the northwest.

"Pompeo did not provide evidence, but the official pointed to satellite imagery provided to CNN showing the oil facilities were struck from the northwest, suggesting an attack from Iraq or Iran, among other information."

Are the Houthis being used as cover by Iran? I don't know, but suspect so.

I expect we are pulling together all available intelligence. Looking at Saudi intel, maybe radar and satellite data, maybe Israeli intel and will know for sure what happened.

As I said the Israelis have already been going after Iran-backed militias in Iraq.

If those militias launched the attack and are serving as a land bridge from Iran to Syria then a lot of ME actors will target them.

I agreed with this until I came to this:

"Humiliating climbdowns aren’t exactly what Trump is known for, and he’s probably more likely to try and double down and escalate the conflict, without apparently having a plan for how to resolve his issues with Iran."

Idiot. He agrees that Iran was behind this and wants a "climbdown?"

i think price controls were pretty bad too. we can drill ourselves out of this easily with the work already done on the atlantic ocs and arctic ... it is a lack of will, bootleggers-and-baptists, and nimbyism. not that i think that that would solve our problems but it would be a good start.

the uniparty was hoping to pull off a coup, not only here, but in ksa because they wanted to ... shut off the valves of the lube for the modern economy.

it is odd though that in all the "russian troll" back-and-forth the one thing that is a lock is that the russian government funded extraordinary efforts in the anti-fracking movement, successfully, in many places. [most of the effort here was middle east funded and bootlegger-and-baptist backstabbing in my opinion, such as it is]

Yes, the attack on Aramco is our fault.

We should de-escalate.

I'm sorry, but if this is conclusively linked to Iran what we do about the attack should be proportional.

Warmongering here, but like in "Ghostbusters" Iran has named its own targets. Iranian refineries - all of them.

The logic is easy to follow. If it's OK for Iran to strike a Saud refinery. It's OK for Saud to strike an Iran refinery, or, preferably. all of them at once.

jim_nj: "The logic is easy to follow. If it's OK for Iran to strike a Saud refinery. It's OK for Saud to strike an Iran refinery, or, preferably. all of them at once"

a) very few deaths
b) Iran economy crippled
c) Iran funding to bad actors sharply reduced
d) price paid for oil by Iran customers (China, Europe) soars

I'm looking for a downside here and not really seeing one ...

jim nj

Jim S,

That's my thought in a nutshell on each point you mention.

I don't see a downside either. I'm hoping we are bold enough to use the justification.

I don't want to do the warmongering thing, but it's proportional.

Anyway, your mud-wrestle with Iggy really distresses me, because I think he's really the voice of reason here. A good man (Gundry) who has done marvelous things could be going down a lectin rabbit hole; God knows it's not the first time such a thing has happened.

Tonto, yes, that could be the case. You will note nowhere have I said Gundry IS right; I never recommend him to anyone who is not quite ill, with a " for your consideration, I know some people who do this and are much better." As I have said, and will say again--it is a VERY restrictive way of eating. And doubting it is NOT unreasonable either--even Gundry addresses that, in his title.
Even though I WANT IG TO READ HIS BOOK, I don't think he needs to spend money on it, because I do not see him using it. (Unless his sarcoid recurs.)
I am not being unreasonable in pointing out Ig's baseless dismissal of him, which happened more than once. I do it because I agree, Ig is typically a voice of reason, and I do not want his dismissal and harsh characterization of Gundry and his intents in writing the book and selling his supplements--which our resident miracle cure from food man ingests-- to discourage anyone from exploring what may be breakthrough treatment/management of autoimmune disorders--there are over 10, 000 FB members of a group which has as its number one requirement to read Plant Paradox. To cause someone to not consider that area of nutritional healing.

(The mild and totally reasonable "he could be like Linus Pauling " and "there are no verifying clinical studies " appeared only this weekend--they are NOT what Ig said about Gundry initially. As I said, if he had--none of this would have happened. Or had he read the book, probably.)

These people have HORRENDOUS lives, with almost no control over flares. They suffer enormously, physically, emotionally, socially. The typical autoimmune disease takes SIX YEARS to be diagnosed--and I can assure you, somewhere along that line "crazy" typically comes in to play. As in psychosomatic, but sadly, by that time, anxiety and depression are a part of and factor in these illnesses.
The Western med treatments have horrendous side effects. Like getting TB, lymphomas
So just not ever eating a legume again --even though the whole rest of the world does, and as "out there" as Ig thinks it is--is a very small price to pay for improved health.

I am also not being unreasonable in my my blanket "there are no healthy grains" statement. And I am factually correct. You could never ever ever eat any grains again and be the picture of health. There is NOTHING essential in grains--they do NOT supply one thing we can't get from animals or vegetables.

Is eating a serving going to kill you? Absolutely not.
Is eating a serving a day going to kill you? Unlikely.
Is eating a serving a meal going to kill you? I don't think so.

Are they enhancing your health? Optimizing it? No. (Well, except for the joy they add to life, because there is no denying they taste good!)

Do I eat them? Yes I do. As I write way too frequently here, there is no substitute for corn chips that I am willing to eat guacamole with. Nor is there for one Cointreau to make Margaritas with. And I am not going to lie--riced cauliflower is not a perfect substitute for white rice.

Do I serve them to my kids? Again, yes I do! They are a great source of calories to fuel them on days they bike, run and windsurf. There is bread in my kitchen when I have overnight guests, if they want toast for their breakfast or sandwiches at lunch time.

I make that statement, along with my reminder "carbs kill," somewhat facetiously. And as a shorthand reminder. And as an attempt to wipe out that FakeNews food pyramid that has caused this obesity epidemic.

jim nj

If attacking one country's refinery is legitimate then returning the favor is legitimate.

It's not an escalation, but a tit-for-tat. I realize I'm in war-mongering mode here, but it is eminently justifiable.

It would collapse the Iranian economy.

peter

Ric Ocasek of the Cars has passed away at the age of 75 of natural causes. I know GUS here is a big Cars fan. Condolences.

jim nj

Anonamom and IG,

Typically I cringe when posters are going after one another.

I wish you would both turn down the rhetoric, but I do understand the sense that authorities have badly botched nutritional science.

I'm not even sure that "nutritional science" is science. I would not feel confident in consulting a "nutritionist."

Fortunately, I've never needed one. I have never had a systemic problem, just wrist surgery for a broken wrist and a rhinoplasty for a broken nose.

But I do know many people who have struggled to find a diagnosis for what some call an idiopathic illness. Nobody knows what else to look for.

Medicine for me is not just a science, but an art or a craft, where learned experience allows for leaps in logic. Those "leaps" are often down-played for lack of scientific evidence, but intuition is also useful.

Iggy is correct in questioning what he is being told.

Anonamom is correct in transferring what she has learned and inferred.

Iggy, argue all you want, but do the underlying reading.

Anonamom, argue all you want, with the provision that I appreciate a doctor who can see beyond established medicine and can intuit the arts and crafts side of it.

I'm sure we can easily build an AI that can diagnose better than an intern, bur once we get into complexity I'd rather have a human involved.

Finally, if no one questions current medical practice we will no longer have advances.

jim nj

I think I may have burnt up some brain cells on that, but it's a long held belief, some doctors transcend medicine.

Those are the people I want working on me if I need it.

anonamom

Good news!
I am working today, and since I have no idea what my typepad password is and I do not take my laptop with me---
you all have a break from posters "going after one another," though of course, I would not characterize what went down as that.

But I really do not have a thing more to say, and until TK comes back and only if he decides to document Ig's first and second posts, what more IS there to say?
This is TOTALLY she says --he says at this point.
What he wants to call "reasonable skepticism"--and most definitely sounds like in how he expresses it now-- I saw as character assassination. Not once--twice.

I fully support reasonable skepticism, btw.
And I look forward to sharing a meal w Ig.

And as I am the 'late person', I stay til the last patient quits vomiting and rolls out the door (I know--so glamorous!) so we are talking 12 or more hours, typically.
Enjoy!

Need to depressurize and drop out all the non-crude first. Supposedly they have 12 or more stabilizer columns. If most survived and it’s utility and the NGL facility that is damaged it may not be as long.

Outside of Saquon Barkley, the talent at nearly every position is below average, or worse.

There's not a single player on defense who opposing teams need to fear, and probably only one or two who'd start on even a handful of other teams.

Their receivers are terrible. Their best WR has a concussion. The guy they signed to replace Odell Beckham is suspended for two more games. Everyone else is a cast-off or practice squad guy.

Eli Manning is about three years past Old Yeller time.

The coach is terrible at calling plays, and apparently at keeping control of the locker room, if the stories in today's NY papers are any indication. His career record is 15 wins and 36 losses, which kind of speaks for itself.

There's basically no reason for hope for this season, or for the forseeable future as long as the genuises who built this wretched roster are still in charge, which they probably will be for at least another year, and even when they are fired, it'll still be Mara Jr. in charge, and his track record on hiring good people is, well, nonexistent.

Things improving in Mexico is good for anti-corruption and security interests on both sides of the border. Let's hope it's for real this time. pic.twitter.com/vaP3NCYPFN

Are we ready to put Iran retaliation in the #TwoWeeks column?

Via Insty,

This is a great article on Lawfare, the group that has essentially taken over and is running this country into the ground.

Latest target (obviously) the Supreme Court.

Even Murdering Joe thinks the latest attacks on Kavanaugh are ridiculous. Low IQ Meeka thinks they're really really important; maybe that birdbrain should start child proofing any desk edges.

Jane

I highly recommend the lawfare article. They have been destroying republicans since the tea party/ If you want to know what we have to beat, that is it.

Jane-

That’s almost a complete rewrite of Harold Finch from over the weekend.

MM, you mentioned Obama and Netflix. The WSJ had a piece the other day pointing out the whitewash job of this new movie about a factory closing, a movie from Obama's production company Higher Ground.

It’s a fascinating and at times moving film. What’s interesting about it, though, is that it never once alludes to the part Mr. Obama played in diminishing the ability of Moraine’s laid off workers to transfer to other GM plants. The president’s role wasn’t indirect and isn’t a matter of dispute: His administration’s bailout deal for GM included a backroom exclusive agreement with the United Auto Workers.

Presumably behind the paywall, but here's the link:

Gaylord's production company should have a more appropriate title like Higher THC Content or Salted Ground.

LOL Captain, I was about to suggest "High as a Kite."

Captain Hate
